Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's storied rivalry provided another chapter as Real Madrid and Barcelona battled again for La Liga supremacy in 2016-17. For the first time since 2012, it was Ronaldo's Madrid that lifted the league title as the Portuguese scored in a 2-0 win at Malaga to leave Zinedine Zidane with a LaLiga winners' medal after his first full season as head coach, while Los Blancos also have a Champions League final on the horizon. But it was Messi that came out on top individually as he took home the coveted "Pichichi" award for finishing as the league's top scorer - the fourth time he has done so compared to Ronaldo's three, although the Argentina star made five more league appearances. Using Opta stats, we take a look at how Messi and Ronaldo compared in terms of goals this season. 33 - Real Madrid have won their 33th La Liga title and the first one since 2011/12 with Jose Mourinho as manager. Zinedine Zidane hailed as best coach in the world by club president Florentino Perez. Zinedine Zidane stands on the brink of history as Real Madrid aim to become the first club to successfully defend the Champions League next month. And club president Florentino Perez believes the Frenchman's achievements since taking the reins in January 2016 make him in a standout in his field. The Frenchman lead Real to their first La Liga title in five years at the weekend and can make it a double with victory over Juventus in Cardiff on June 3. The club's president believes the impact made by the former world player of the year leaves him unrivalled among his peers. Speaking at Madrid's town hall during the title celebrations, he said: 'Thanks Zinedine for all you have given us, and all you keep giving us. 'You were the best player in the world, and now you are simply the best coach in the world. 'You, your assistants, and this squad have made history again with exciting football. Madrid scored in every game of the season, which shows our philosophy. 'This league title is a symbol of our values, it was achieved fighting until the last game, and respecting our opponents, who made it difficult for us. 'This team has given us something we had wished for a long time.' Real edged out arch-rivals Barcelona by three points on the final day of the season thanks to a 2-0 win away at Malaga on Sunday.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has obtained a warrant from a court to search all the apartments in Osborne Towers, where the N13.3 billion was discovered. According to sources in the commission, the EFCC at the weekend wrote to all the occupants of the building notifying them that its operatives will carry out a search of all the apartments. It was learnt that the reason for the search arose from the suspicion that there might be more cash hidden in another apartment at Osborne Towers, other than Flat 7B. A source revealed that the whistle blower who blew the lid on Apartment 7B, had also informed the commission that another apartment has cash stashed in it. The whistle blower, the source said, is believed to be a young graduate who works in the building. It was for this reason that the commission went to court to obtain a warrant to search all the apartments in the building. It was gathered that upon receiving the letter of the EFCC, several occupants of the building were very co- operative at the weekend and allowed the operatives to carry out a search of their flats. According to the source, about 21 flats in the building had already been searched by Monday, including the penthouse and three flats belonging to the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu. |
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has condemned the incessant harassment, arrest and illegal detention of their members in different prisons and secret cells across the country. IPOB head of media and publicity, Emma Powerful, in a statement on Monday, said “the illegal detention of Bright Chimezie Ishinwa in DSS secret cell without traces, those in Igweocha prisons and those in the state CID headquarters Igweocha languishing and others are becoming of much worry and concern”. IPOB said it expected the Nigerian Government and security agencies to do the needful either to release those arrested on bail or charge them to court without further delay “if they are still alive in their custody”. The statement added that: “The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on 6th February 2017 declared IPOB as a legal organization but the Nigerian Police and other security agencies who does not know the law are busy breaking the law by continuing targeting the peaceful members of IPOB. “On the 15th April 2017, the DPO of Umuebulu police station (Superintendent of police) SP Mary Iheanacho ordered the kidnapp of IPOB members who were doing evangelism for the restoration of ancient nation of Biafra in Umuebulu 1 Etche in Etche LGA of River state. “The peaceful evangelism of IPOB family members were held on the 2nd of April 2017 there was no arrest or kidnap until 15th April 2017 the DPO ordered for the kidnap of the IPOB members in the community. “The IPOB members in the community searched for the members who were kidnapped only could locate one Mr Victor Ogiebe under the custody of SP Mary Iheanacho while others were not seen since five days now. “Therefore, we are calling on international community the European Union EU, African Union AU, all the relevant Human Rights Organizations, Men and Women of good conscience around the globe to prevail upon the Nigeria government and security agencies to stop harassing, intimidating IPOB members and release those detained illegally in different prisons and secret cells across the country because they didn’t commit crime against Nigeria state or humanity.” |
Barcelona have another Champions League mountain to climb if they are to oust Italian champions Juventus to reach the semi-finals on Wednesday. Barca trail 3-0 from the first leg in Turin last week. However, the Catalans have shown that they are capable of the spectacular back home at Camp Nou in European competition through the years. Here, AFP Sports looks at five of Barca’s finest comebacks. 3-0 v Ipswich Town, UEFA CUP, 1977 Future Barca coach Bobby Robson’s Ipswich side looked to have this last 16 tie in the bag with a famous 3-0 first leg success at Portman Road. However, inspired by Johan Cruyff’s double and an 87th minute penalty from Carles Rexach, Barca levelled the scores on aggregate. After a goalless extra-time, the hosts prevailed 3-1 on penalties. 3-0 v Anderlecht, Cup Winners’ Cup, 1978 A year later, Barca produced another fightback to edge through on penalties on their way to winning the 1978/79 Cup Winners’ Cup. Johann Krankl, Juan Carlos Heredia and Rafael Zuviria got the goals in normal time before Dutch legend Johan Neeskens struck the decisive penalty in a 4-1 shootout win. 3-0 v IFK Gothenburg, European Cup, 1986 Arguably Barca’s finest comeback before their miraculous feat against PSG a month ago came in the semi-finals of the 1985/86 European Cup. Pichi Alonso’s hat-trick overturned a 3-0 first leg deficit against Swedish champions Gothenburg before Barca edged another penalty shootout 5-4. As another good omen for Barca, they also beat Juventus on route to the final that year. 4-0 v AC Milan, Champions League, 2013 Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has already suffered at first hand what a bruised Barca are capable off. In 2013, Allegri’s Milan side won the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie 2-0. However, Lionel Messi quickly cancelled out the Italians advantage with two sensational first-half strikes before David Villa and Jordi Alba completed the comeback. 6-1 v Paris Saint-Germain, Champions League 2017 Can lightning really strike twice? Barca looked down and out after a 4-0 thrashing in Paris on Valentines’ Day back in February. No side had ever overturned a 4-0 first leg deficit in Champions League history and even Neymar declared Barca had justa one percent chance. However, the Brazilian inspired a mad final 10 minute spell as Barca scored three times to progress. Luis Suarez, Layvin Kurzawa’s own goal and a Messi penalty brought Barca back into the tie before Edison Cavani’s away goal looked to have given PSG the breathing space they needed. However, Neymar’s brilliant free-kick and penalty set up a grandstand finish as his cross was then turned home by Sergio Roberto in the 95th minute to unprecedented scenes of celebration at the Camp Nou. |

The pilot of a charter plane that crashed in Colombia on Monday had been warned before taking off from an airport in Bolivia that he might not have enough fuel, a report says. An airport official raised the concern after checking the plane's flight plan, Bolivia's Deber newspaper said. Seventy-one people died in the crash, including members of a Brazilian football team. Six people survived. Bodies of the victims are due to be repatriated to Brazil. Colombian authorities have said evidence is growing that the British-made BAE 146 Avro RJ85 aircraft ran out of fuel as it tried to land at Medellin airport. Experts say it was flying at, or very near, its maximum range. In a leaked tape, the pilot, Miguel Quiroga, can be heard warning of a "total electric failure" and "lack of fuel".

A plane carrying 81 people, including a Brazilian football team, has crashed on its approach to the city of Medellin in Colombia, officials say. Details are unclear but some reports say there are survivors. The chartered plane, flying from Bolivia, was carrying members of the Chapecoense football team, airport officials said. The team was due to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Medellin team Atletico Nacional. The first leg of the final of the cup, South America's second most important club competition, was scheduled for Wednesday, but has now been suspended. The team, from the city of Chapeco, was promoted to Brazil's first division in 2014 and reached the final last week after a victory against Argentina's San Lorenzo. Reports say the plane, carrying 72 passengers and nine crew, crashed in a mountainous area outside the city shortly before midnight local time (05:00 GMT). Medellin's Mayor Federico Gutierrez described it as "a tragedy of huge proportions", but added it was possible there were survivors. The Jose Maria Cordova de Rionegro airport, which serves Medellin, posted on its Twitter account: "Confirmed, the aircraft licence number CP2933 was carrying the team @ChapecoenseReal. Apparently there are survivors."
