Obi Mikel brought his renowned football career to a close on Tuesday and some of the biggest names in football have paid tribute to the former Nigeria captain.

The 35-year-old retires as one of Africa’s most decorated footballers, having won the Uefa Champions League, Europa League, Premier League and the Africa Cup of Nations, a feat only bettered by Samuel Eto’o - who is now the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation.

An Ikeja High Court on Tuesday sentenced the deposed Baale of Shangisha in the Magodo area of Lagos, Mutiu Ogundare to a 15-year jail term.


The traditional ruler was charged with faking his kidnapping and breaching of peace.

Recall that the former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on July 13, 2022, suspended the Baale over a kidnap incident.

After five years, Justice Hakeem Oshodi, on Tuesday, sentenced Ogundare, having convicted him of a two-count bordering on breach of peace in the state and fake kidnapping.

Also jailed for the same prison term was his brother, Opeyemi Mohammed.

The court, however, set his wife Abolanle, free, having earlier absolved her of the charges earlier leveled against her.

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Uche Secondus, has accepted his appointment as an adviser to presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar.


In his reaction, the former national chairman of the opposition expressed readiness to work with the former vice president.

“I have just received the news of my appointment as Technical Adviser to H.E @atiku Abubakar in his 2023 Presidential Campaign.

“The mission to Rescue Nigeria that was initiated in 2018 will come to a fulfillment by the Special Grace of Almighty God”, he tweeted.

On Monday, Atiku announced the names of some party stalwarts that will serve as his advisers for the 2023 election campaign.

They include ex-Senate Presidents, Bukola Saraki and Pius Anyim; Ibrahim Shekarau and Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Governors of Kano and Osun.

Secondus accepted the advisory role in spite of Governor Nyesom Wike who earlier warned him against doing so.

In late August, Wike, told a gathering at Omagwa in Ikwerre Local Government Area that he would crush anyone siding with his former ally.

“We will take every might we have, we will leave our enemy and finish you first. All of you going to Abuja to hold meetings with our enemies, I’m going to finish you to the last”, he vowed.

In reply, Secondus condemned the “disdainful threat” by the Rivers helmsman to crush party members supporting Atiku.

“Wike, you cannot crush anybody. I cannot fight or join issues with you, only God can crush”, said the former PDP leader.

Ronald Araujo will undergo surgery on Wednesday for the adductor longus tendon avulsion he has in his right thigh. The operation will be carried out by Dr. Lasse Lempainen, under the supervision of the Club’s medical staff, in Turku, Finland.

Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba has voiced his support for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, urging him to keep dancing following a racism row.

Drogba is the latest high-profile personality to show his solidarity with the 22-year-old Brazil international who hit the headlines after he was dragged into a racism controversy and was told to “stop playing the monkey” by a Spanish agent last week.

Twenty-four Nigerians have filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for “failing to give them and other seven million Nigerians adequate time and opportunity to complete their voter registration after they have carried out their registration online.”


The Plaintiffs, who are suing for themselves and on behalf of seven million other Nigerians, are seeking to “complete the registration process, so that they can obtain their permanent voter cards (PVCs), and exercise their right to vote.”

INEC had recently revealed that out of 10,487,972 Nigerians who carried out their pre-registration online, only 3,444,378 completed the process at a physical centre.

This represents just 32.8 percent of completed online registration.

But in the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1662/2022 filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, last Friday, the Plaintiffs are seeking “an order of mandamus to direct and compel INEC to re-activate its continuous voters registration exercise to allow the Plaintiffs to complete their registration and collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs).”

They are also arguing that, “The inability to complete our registration is entirely due to factors outside of our control.”

The twenty-four Nigerians include: Ayoola Opeyemi Ebenezer; Eche Onah Otakpa; Olatoye Clement Damilola; Adeeyo Bayo Wasiu; Kunat Tychius Amos; Emeghe Uchanma Grace; Ogunejiofor Raphael Emeka, Tagbo Philips Chidubem.

Others include: Emmanuel Promise Tochukwu; Emmanuel Ternajev, Adedotun Adegoke Babatunde, Nkemdilim Agbor Bassey, Joy Oluwadamilola Ige; Lawerence Ignatius; Agbede Kunle and Eze Daniel Ndubisi.

Others are: Omoike Iredia Oseine; Ndubuisi Anthony Ahanihu; Akande Akintunde O; Adamma Rhodes, Joshua Patrick Ogenekaro; Wisdom Emeka; Ukpe Victor Destiny and Abayomi Opeoluwa.

The suit was filed on behalf of the Plaintiffs by lawyers to Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare and Adelanke Aremo, partly read: “Closing the gates on eligible Nigerians cannot preserve trust in the electoral process.”
