Facts have emerged that Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue State and some top government functionaries have diverted huge sums of state funds for personal enrichment, in a conspiracy also involving leaders of the legislature and judiciary in the state. Over N20 billion has been siphoned mostly from the N28 billion bailout loan, the N10 billion commercial bank loan, as well as the statutory monthly allocations from the federation account.

At his inauguration, Ortom had stated he inheriting a salary arrears from his predecessor of N12 billion, and has since then collected loans totalling over N50 billion to clear the arrears, yet to no avail, in his 8months in office, he owns salary arrears of four mouths with a surprising upsurging of wage bill from N2-4billion in according to the governor last month. This is despite huge sums expended on staff verification for both state and local governments.

In June 2015 he collected N10 billion from a commercial and paid salaries for the months of May and June, 2015, but included the same months in the request for the N28 billion bailout loan and when it came he diverted the monies for those two months totalling N6.4 billion. On receipt of the N28 billion bailout, Ortom had directed his Special Adviser on Local Govt. and Chieftaincy Affairs, Titus Zam, to do a staff verification which in the end dispossessed thousands of workers of their wages running into over N10 billion. This plot, it is said, had the connivance of state Assembly Speaker, Terkimbi Ikyange, who initiated his own staff audit and took over N200 million for it, and also collected close to N500 million to supply SUVs to his colleagues. Wth a perceptible over-reliance on loans to pay even regular salaries, Ortom has largely been silent on accounting for the monthly FAAC allocations running into tens of billions of naira.

Zebra Reporters investigations reveal that with over N20 billion diverted the governor embarked on purchase of landed assets, including a vast stretch of land for his proposed Oracle University in Makurdi,

Governor Ortom’s newly acquired land for Oracle University, Adaka Community, Makurdi
and also deployed billions of naira to facilitate victory for himself at the tribunal, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, in the petition against his election by PDP’s Terhemen Tarzoor, during which he had boasted openly that he had the money to buy the judgement.

It is also revealed that Ortom has been settling his godfather, Senator George Akume with billions of naira and also used billions to pay off monies he allegedly embezzled while serving as Supervising Minister of Aviation during the Jonathan era. Others, including Speaker Ikyange,

Targema Takema, Local Govt. & Chieftaincy Affairs Adviser, Titus Zam, are also revealed to have, from the loot, purchased choice landed properties in the state and in Abuja. Takema is said to have bought a gigantic uncompleted hotel structure in Makurdi from an Aide to Jolly Nyame while he was governor of Taraba State, and also bought other choice properties in the state and in Abuja.

Speaker Ikyange is said to be building a massive shopping mall and a palatial private residence all in Makurdi, while he is also said to have paid deposit of over N100 million to buy a hotel in Abuja owned by a retired Army officer of Tiv origins who served a single tenure as Senator.

Adviser Zam on his part is said to have bought a number of choice landed properties in Makurdi, some of which have become embroiled in dispute, while he also purchased a multi-million naira private residence in Abuja. Chief of Staff, Terwase Orbunde, an Elder and Deacon of Living Faith Church, is also said to have quickly expanded his Makurdi residence and also acquired more properties in the state, while Media Adviser, Tahav Agerzua, is said to have built a posh hotel complex and choice residences in Makurdi and Gboko.

This property was put out for sale, with his appointment six months ago work is 95% completed.

Other functionaries of government, including Agriculture & Food Security Adviser, Abua Yajir, are also said to be acquiring landed properties within and outside the state at a frenzied pace. But at the same time Gov. Ortom is owing workers salaries and there are virtually no development projects to show after close to a year of his administration, while corruption is deepening and the living conditions of ordinary people in the state getting worse, the government appointees have with the last 8 months have spent so much money with such a reckless fashion to suggest there is a boom and no sign of lack within their spending clique. It is disheartening to suggest that a government installed on a premise of change could be so reckless with public funds with a public display when families are daily crying for basic means of livelihood.

Talking with our investigator recently in Makurdi the Benue State capital, a civil servant with the name Ruth who refused to disclose her last name, said the governor had promised to clear the four months arrears left behind by the Suswam government only to do worse than Suswam. She continued, at least Suswam spent 8years and left 4 months arrears, Ortom has spent 8months and owed 4 months after collecting bailout, and other loans from commercial banks. she said the name of Governor Ortom is synonymous with “loan” now.

Celebrities / Open Letter To The Okoye's (P Square) By Chimezie Peters Ozofor by GidiParrot: 5:54am On Feb 19, 2016
This would be the second letter I'm officially writing to group of individuals. My first was that of JIN Awards for shifting an event venue few minutes the real event was about to commence. Read Here: Open Letter To Jin Awards - Shifting Of Venue Few Minutes The Event Was About To Comence. I really don't care what the world would think about this, call it attention seeking or whatever, but the truth remains, I really don't care.

I'm really pained seeing something like this happening to the Okoye's family. Back then in Jos everything you guys are today began in St. Murumba secondary school Jos, that small Catholic school that has made you all big today. Peter, Jude and Paul I still remember vividly well when you all joined the music and dancing school, how everyone loved you guys, how united and hardworking you all were until God placed you guys at the top today.

I thought when people grow older and richer, more sense and way of doing things emerge too. But your own case is different. I'm not siding anybody on this because I'm really disappointed in you all. Only God knows how your late mom would be feeling on the shit you guys are painting the family with. You have many fans and people looking up to you guys and this is what they get in return. What a shame!!!

This is a family issue and should be talked about within the family circle. Taking it down to social media is the dumbest and most childish thing I have ever seen. Checkout billions of fans world wide who already know your mess, exposing each other on the Internet. Honestly that's a very stupid act. Are you guys telling it to the world for settlement or you guys are just been naive?

Listen, this is exactly what many people want to happen between your family, they have been praying for years for it to happen, and here you are giving it to them. What a shame to the Okoye's. Now your conflicts is trending all over the internet, different blogs and news platform having it too. Making it possible for more audience to know whats going on.

I am not here to analyse who is or not at fault like I mentioned above, all I just want from you guys is to stop been childish and talk things out within yourself and stop exposing yourselves for the general public to laugh at.

Firstly, I noticed some people supporting Paul, that he is more matured than Peter and others supporting Peter that he is more cool and friendly than Paul. WTF!!! They are just increasing the fire. Stop all this social media childs play and find a better solution to your current situation.

Even though some would think it's none of my business but I must admit it really is because I can't seat and watch people whom I know from day one to tarnish their image just because they lack inspiration.

Thank you!!!

Nairaland / General / Lagos Light Rail Will Be Functional By December - Ambode by GidiParrot: 6:37pm On Feb 18, 2016
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday restated his administration’s commitment to ensure that the Blue Line of the Light Rail Project is up and running by December 2016.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at the 5th Lagos Corporate Assembly, a forum for public-private sector engagement held at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House, Ikeja, while responding to questions from captains of industries and members of the Organised Private Sector (OPS), debunked claims that work had stopped on the first phase of the project connecting Mile 2 to CMS, saying the allegation was totally untrue.

“The truth is, you might not see the contractors but they are actually working on the waters for now and by December this year, the project will start running. So, work is seriously ongoing,” Governor Ambode assured.

He said that government was also about concluding on the channelization of the waterways in Lagos to improve on water transportation so as to encourage investors and reduce the pressure on the road networks in the state.

He assured members of the OPS as well as would-be investors that the state is more than willing and ready to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive with the overall aim of improving on the socio-economic wellbeing of the citizens.

The Governor said as a government, he was ready to partner with existing and would-be investors for industrial growth so far such investors are bringing value to the state.

While responding to issues raised by captains of industry and members of the organized private sector at the forum tagged “A+ Meets Business”, Governor Ambode said as part of measures aimed at encouraging investment, his administration created the N25 billion Employment Trust Fund to give soft loans to entrepreneurs just at three percent, while the Office of Overseas Affairs and Investments otherwise known as Lagos Global, the Office of Civic Engagement, as well as the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment Generation were equally established, all in a bid to promote investment opportunities.

He said as part of measures to further improve on the creation of enabling environment for businesses to thrive, his administration was also in the process of establishing Lagos Micro Finance Bank, which would go a long way in providing succor for business owners.

He said: “As we speak, we are in talks with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on this and very soon we shall come up with the Lagos Micro Finance Bank and this is another effort geared towards the economic wellbeing of our people.”

Governor Ambode said that the government was also in the process of transforming the Kuramo beach into a World Trade Convention Centre, assuring that he was very much committed to showcasing the economic potentials of the state to the rest of the world.

Speaking on the strategy to drastically reduce traffic in Apapa and make life comfortable for people and businesses in the axis, Governor Ambode recalled the security tour he recently embarked upon to Ishawo and Oke-Oko creek in the suburb of Ikorodu where he met with military personnel carrying out the “Operation Awatse”, a joint military operation of all the security agencies to tackle the menace of pipeline vandalism in the Arepo axis.

“The idea is that when we open up the area and construct the Ishawo-Oke-Oko creek road to connect the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway from there, we would have greatly reduced the traffic gridlock on the expressway and then finally put a stop to the activities of pipeline vandals so that we can begin to directly pump petroleum products from Atlas Cove in Apapa to Mosimi, and then the tankers will have no business to come to Lagos to lift product,” Governor Ambode said.

The Governor, who spoke on several issues affecting businesses in the state, assured that he would work on perfecting a methodology for collection of rates, and that he would soon come up with a grand plan to permanently tackle the menace of touts.

On power, Governor Ambode said between now and 2017, he had an agenda to create clusters of Independent Power Projects (IPPs) across the state to improve on power generation and ensure 24hours power supply in Lagos.

Earlier, Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Prince Rotimi Ogunleye, said the forum was a vehicle for government and private sector to interact and discuss issues that are germane to the industrial growth of the state.

He assured the private sector that the Ambode-led government was poised to assist the industrial sector to maximize its potentials for greater contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the state.

In her presentation, President of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Mrs. Nike Akande commended Governor Ambode for programmes aimed at securing lives and property and encouraging economic growth, but urged the Governor to expedite action on the issuance of land titles, and also prevail on the Federal Government to fix the rail system in Apapa and relocate Tank Farms in the axis.

Also, Chairman of Apapa Branch of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Folaranmi Odunayo commended Governor Ambode on the Light Up Lagos initiative, and sought the inclusion of industrial areas in the project.

He also advocated collaboration between the Federal Government, Lagos and Ogun States in addressing the traffic gridlock and establishment of Building Code to control erection of structures especially along the expressway.

There were also presentations from the National Association of Small Scale Industries, DFID, representatives of Dangote Refineries, Nigeria-America Chamber of Commerce, Franco-Nigeria Chamber of Commerce, African Women Entrepreneurship Programme, among others.

Health / Dr. Paul Orhii Leaves NAFDAC In An Emotional Ceremony (photos by GidiParrot: 11:58am On Feb 18, 2016
Following the directive by Nigeria's Central Government for Heads of over 20 Federal Agencies to handover, former Director General of the country's Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control or NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Botwev Orhii handed over Wednesday in an emotional ceremony.
King James Yiye who was at the Agency's Headquarters in Abuja reports...

Dr. Paul Orhii who arrived Abuja from Lagos this morning immediately went in to brief
NAFDAC's Director of Administration and Human Resources Mrs. Yetunde Oni, whom he later handed over to in acting capacity.

Shortly after the briefing, Dr. Orhii came down to meet the rest of NAFDAC's staff waiting outside in spite of the scorching sun to hear from him for the last time as their Director General.

In his short and touching speech, Dr. Orhii said he was very grateful to the leadership of Nigeria and Nigerians for giving him the unique opportunity to serve his country for 7 years. "Not just the opportunity to serve but to help me make great achievements that are recognized not only within the country but internationally, there is no country you go to and when you mention NAFDAC that somebody will turn their head to look"

He said having served his country under 3 Presidents who have had confidence in him, he was indeed very grateful.
Dr. Orhii paid tribute to Presidents Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhamadu Buhari for keeping him on the "very complicated job and very sensitive position" for such a long time.

While trying to illustrate how big the opportunity he has been given was, Dr. Orhii said, out of the over 180 million Nigerians who think they can be better DGs of NAFDAC, if each person was given just a day, that will take 180,000,000 days but he alone was given over 7 years by different leadership to serve on the same position.

"I'm happy I served my country meritoriously and we achieved great results, that's what kept me working...for those of you who were here, it sounds like yesterday, this is the same suit I was wearing, if you can go and watch that video, I decided to wear it today while searching through my wardrobe in Lagos this morning..."
The sad faces missing their boss were relieved and they laughed and applauded Dr. Orhii who naturally is talented to make even those mourning to laugh.

The Future
Like a parting gift, Dr. Paul Orhii advised the staff to take NAFDAC as their main life and build institutions that should outlive them.
"Let nobody tell you that any other person can not do better than me, with your support, they can. If they are standing on our shoulders, they should be able to look further, so they can build on what we have put in place at NAFDAC and should be able to do better, that's the kind of Agency that I want to leave behind, and see in the future...".

The Acting Director General Mrs. Yetunde Oni promised Dr. Orhii that they won't disappoint him, "the assurance you are getting from us all is that, the legacy that you have left behind in terms of all the strategies that you have put in place such that the Agency has continued to record successes, we will build upon, we can not do it on our own, we will continue to solicit your support and your guidance so that together, we will continue to work passionately and rub-off positively on the health of all the Nigerians whose health has been entrusted in our hands".

Practical Results

Former Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances at NAFDAC Hashim Ubale Yusufu said when Dr. Paul Orhii assumed duty as the Director General of NAFDAC in January 2009, the World Health Organization report released that same year for Nigeria showed the level of counterfeit or failed products at over 40%, but now that Dr. Paul Orhii is leaving NAFDAC, he said, the WHO study on anti malaria shows the level of counterfeit at 3%.

Looking Back

What was different about Dr. Paul Botwev Orhii as the Directorc General of NAFDAC?

Hashim Ubale Yusufu tells me in a full interview which will be published soon. But from what appeared to be first of its kind in Nigeria, Dr. Orhii handed over his staff identification card and all official car keys to Mrs. Oni and later drove away in a black Volkswagen mini van.

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, on Wednesday charged boat operators in the state to observe strict safety standards in their operations, to avoid sea accidents and needless loss of lives.

She gave the charge at Aiyetoro, Epe, during the distribution of over 700 life jackets to select schools in Epe Local Government, by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) in partnership with Total Nigeria Limited.

Mrs. Ambode who said that safety was too important to be compromised in any human activity, urged the operators to streamline their operations according to international best practice.

According to her, “There had been unpleasant incidents of boat mishaps in the past, some involving school pupils, commuting across the lagoon to their various schools. Users of water transportation face the uncertainty of safe arrival everyday.

“These circumstances have informed the great initiative of the Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, and Total Nigeria Limited, in donating life jackets, for the use of some pupils, schooling around the riverine areas of Epe Local Government”.

She added that the government had continuously introduced measures to improve water transportation in the state, including the construction of modern jetties for riverine communities and enforcement of safety rules among boat operators.
Mrs. Ambode who called for strict enforcement of “No life jackets, no water travel” campaign, urged boat operators to shun overloading, night travels and boat cruising by untrained persons.

While noting that safety on water must be collectively enforced, she called on parents, teachers school managements and regulatory authorities, to step up safety advocacy among users of water transportation in Lagos State.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director of LASWA, Ms Abisola Kamson, said that it was part of the resolve of the current administration to safe guard the water-ways, stressing that every child or adult embarking on water journey must make use of life jacket.

In his own address, the Executive Secretary of Epe Local Government, Hon. Ahmed Seriki, said the initiative was first of its kind in Epe community.

He urged residents to be safety conscious, while advising them to always call the toll free numbers-767 and 112 in case of an emergency.

Highlights of the programme include the presentation of life jackets to pupils of various schools and a demonstration of the administration of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to adults and children.

Sports / Lagos City Marathon Has Come To Stay - Governor Ambode by GidiParrot: 4:18pm On Feb 06, 2016
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Saturday said the 2016 Lagos City Marathon has come to stay, just as he assured that the state government will work towards making the competition the best of its kind in the world.

The Governor who spoke at the finish point of the Marathon at the Eko Atlantic City, expressed delight in the massive turn out of international and local athletes for the Marathon, saying that Lagos was proud to join major cities in the world to promote the Marathon.

“Lagos State is glad to host athletes from different parts of the world today as we flag off the Lagos City Marathon. The last time this event held was 30 years ago. I stand here to tell you today that this event is here to stay. We are committed to sustaining this event and ensuring consistent improvement to make it one of the best marathons in the world,” he said.

Governor Ambode said his administration remains determined to make the state the hub of sports in Africa adding that it will embrace other international sports, while Lagos will bid to host Continental and International sports tournaments going forward.

Speaking to journalists shortly after presenting awards to the winners, Governor Ambode said government with the Marathon, combined entertainment, sports and hospitality to create jobs for the people and allow the youths to engage themselves positively.

“We are proving it, this is just the beginning. We would double the scale of it next year and then we would make it more interesting than ever before. This is a world class event and Lagos is back on the map of the world as a choice destination for tourist and investment, as a sports centre and as an entertainment hub and that is what we are committed to doing”, he said.

Also speaking at the event, Vice President of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), Col. Hamad Malboum thanked the organisers for putting up a sterling show and assured that the IAAF will partner with the state to make the Marathon the most remarkable athletics event in Africa and in the world.

In the same vein, Minister of Sports, Hon. Solomon Dalung, expressed appreciation to Governor Ambode, saying that the Governor by his actions is trying to repossess the lost glory of the state.

He recalled that during the yuletide period, the Governor spent a whole night at a fiesta held in Lagos, which according to him has launched the state to take the lead in the entertainment industry.

“I believe this is not an accident, but rather a part of the concerted efforts of the Lagos state government to play a major role in leading sports. The turnout and registration for this event attests to the fact that Nigerians love sports and that all Nigerians need is an enabling environment to express their potentials.” The minister said.

On his part, the Managing Director of Access Bank, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, whose organisation is the major sponsor of the Lagos City Marathon, said they were proud of the opportunity to collaborate with the state government to empower the people with a sense of history.

He said his organisation will continue to collaborate with the state government to make the tournament bigger and better, adding that next year’s edition will take place on the 11th of February 2017.

Some of the athletes also commended the organisers of the Marathon for making adequate logistics to ensure a hitch free and successful tournament.

One of the athletes, Lekan Taiwo, said, “I am really impressed with the Lagos State Government. From the take off point, it was obvious that a lot has been put into the planning of this event. I saw ambulances, traffic control officers at strategic locations and even street sweepers were on ground to clear the waste generated from the participants. We had people coming out to cheer us up. This is commendable”.
