Health / Lagos State Mobile Cancer Centre Set To Be Established by GidiParrot: 6:56am On May 13, 2016

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode accepted the offer to raise funds toward the establishment of Mobile Cancer Centre for treatment of people who require such treatment, just as he expressed absolute commitment to providing efficient health care service delivery to all residents of the State.

Governor Ambode, who said the major driving philosophy of his administration is to selflessly serve humanity especially by lifting people from their challenges, expressed the optimism that the establishment of the Cancer Centre in Lagos would be to the greater benefit of the people.

The Governor spoke at the Lagos House, Ikeja on Thursday, May 12, when he played host to the Board of Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) led by its Convener and first female Chief Executive Officer of a publicly quoted company in Nigeria, Mrs. Adetutu Adeleke.

While lauding the initiative, Governor Ambode said his personal philosophy and personality was all about making life meaningful to the people and make positive impact in the society.

The CECP is co-promoted by the core bodies of the Organized Private Sector (OPS) and its main aim is to compliment the development effort of government by promoting the practice of collective philanthropy.
The CECP has also been at the vanguard of galvanizing individuals and corporate organizations toward donating for the building of Mobile Cancer Centres across the country.

Governor Ambode, who described the initiative of the group as very laudable and selfless considering the focus on the health sector, assured of his readiness and commitment to support the course which the CECP has decided to take on, especially in raising funds towards the building of a Mobile Cancer Centre in Lagos.

"It is so heartwarming that ordinarily the course which you decided to pursue is in sync with my personal philosophy and even my personality. What is important here is that you have decided to take on something that is selfless and it is coming from a passion to give back to humanity and that is the philosophy of this administration.

"What we have been practicing in this administration that came on board with change mantra is to be able to make a difference to the people and also to touch them as much as possible and ensure a government of inclusion in which nobody is left behind.

"It is on that note that I like to let you know that our administration is committed fully to providing efficient health service delivery to our people. The initiative which you have taken especially on the health sector is laudable and I have no other reason than to compliment, support and also practically do everything to touch our people positively.

"You will recall that just recently, we were able to sign up a project that would give us a world class Medical Park in Ikoyi and we are also strongly supporting those with bone marrow issues and the essence of all is to ensure that we lift our people away their challenges," he said.

Earlier, Adeleke thanked Governor Ambode for his good works in the State, and urged him to support the group in its drive to either totally eradicate or reduce cancer to a barest minimum.

She specifically invited Governor Ambode to be the first Governor in Nigeria to be inaugurated as the Patron of the CECP and use his birthday on June 14, 2016 to raise funds for the Mobile Cancer Unit, a request which was granted by the Governor.

While granting the request, Governor Ambode said: "I humbly accept your offer of being the patron of this group and also accept to lead the fight against cancer. With my humble self and my friends and supporters of this government, I know that we will have a successful event."

Other notable Nigerians, who accompanied Adeleke on the courtesy visit to the Governor, are Publisher of the Guardian Newspapers, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru; Southwest Women Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Kemi Nelson; Executive Secretary of CECP, Dr. (Mrs.) Abia Nzelu, among others.

Nairaland / General / Appeal Court Affirms 25 Years Jail For Boko Haram Convicts by GidiParrot: 6:58am On May 09, 2016
The Court of Appeal in Lagos on Friday affirmed the judgment of a Federal High Court in Lagos convicting and sentencing three members of dreaded terror group, Boko Haram to 25 years imprisonment each.

The Appeal Court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Y.B Nimpar, rejected the appeal filed by the convicts and upheld the judgment of the court below.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos, had on September 30, 2014, handed down the verdict after the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Justice, successfully prosecuted the terrorists before the court.

The State Government had filed charges against four accused persons for conspiracy to commit a felony to wit: acts of terrorism, concealing information about acts of terrorism and having possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition contrary to various sections of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the Firearms Act, Cap F.28 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Out of the four persons charged, three were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each, while the fourth accused was discharged and acquitted.

Those convicted and sentenced are Ali Mohammed Modu, Adamu Ali Karumi and Ibrahim Usman Ali.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, the convicts through their lawyer, had approached the Appeal Court in Lagos asking that the verdict be upturned on the grounds that they were charged under inapplicable laws, and that the 25 years terms of imprisonment were excessive.

One of the convicts, Ibrahim Usman Ali, had specifically argued that he was inadvertently convicted and sentenced for a count with which he was not charged.

While the Court of Appeal agreed that one of the convicts was wrongly convicted under a count with which he was not charged, the Court however affirmed the judgment of Justice Buba which convicted and sentenced the three terrorists to 25 years imprisonment each.

Travel / Top 4 Signs That Shows You Are A True Lagosian by GidiParrot: 6:23am On Apr 30, 2016
Lagos is, without a doubt, the most popular city in Nigeria and possibly Africa. Not only is it cosmopolitan and all-encompassing, it offers countless opportunities to its inhabitants as well as visitors. The city literally adopts thousands of new residents each year and so it has become a daunting task identifying who the real Lagosians are.

Let’s face it, while you may need to have spent a reasonable time living in Lagos, you do not have to be an indigene of the state to be considered a proper Lagosian. There are certain signs that generally suggest that you have shed your “newbie” status and you are officially a true “son of the soil”.

Here are four of these signs.

1) You do not refer to the state as “Lagos”

Real Lagosians do not refer to the city as ‘Lagos’, a majority use the term “Eko” while the young and trendy use the term “Lasgidi”. If you hear any real Lagosian make reference to “Lagos”, they are most likely talking about the Victoria Island part of the State.

2) You are always vigilant and in a hurry

Real Lagosians understand the need to always stay sharp and move fast, and it has become second nature to them. You will never catch a true Lagosian keeping his or her things carelessly in public places or walking sluggishly on the streets, especially crowded streets.

3) The term “owambe” brings you joy

Lagosians love to party and so they find opportunities to make merry. Weekends are basically set aside for owambes…even if Friday nights are spent in one of the many nightclubs and lounges around the city.

4) You can walk, eat, talk on the phone and hop on a bus, all at the same time

This happens all the time in Lagos. Every true Lagosian operates with the mantra ‘time waits for no man’, so they have learnt tricks and ways to juggle different activities at the same time.

I was really wrong to have married her, I wish I had known you earlier. See you soon honey!". The hubby then walked out of the room.

In tears and very upset, the woman got up from under the bed and decided to go and read what the hubby wrote on the letter. It reads: "Madam April fool, I COULD see your feet under d bed, I am going to buy bread. Stand up & fry egg 4 me, abeg stop dis your silly games and go prepare me a meal joor"!

Politics / Governor Ambode Orders Repair Of Lagos-badagry Expressway by GidiParrot: 6:53am On Apr 01, 2016
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has ordered the State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) to immediately embark on extensive repair on the ever busy Lagos-Badagry expressway so as to improve the driving experience of motorists in the area.

Special Adviser to the Governor/C.E.O, Public Works, Engr. Ayotunde Sodeinde, told journalists on Thursday that the Corporation has already mobilised its workers to commence work immediately on several sections of the road.

“Immediately His Excellency, Governor Ambode, gave us the directive, we have moved into the area to commence extensive work on the roads. We have been here since Tuesday and work has commenced in earnest,” he said.

He said the repair works will include covering all potholes on the road while the drainage systems will also be given a face-lift.

Sodeinde listed the roads earmarked for repairs to include Iyana Ishasi – Ribamu Bus Stop (both sides), Ketu Bus Stop – Cele Nica, FGC Ijanikan – Iyana Era, ACOED Pedestrian Bridge – Alafia Bus Stop, Former Toll Gate – Ibiye/Morogbo and Pure Water Bus Stop – Magbon (both sides).

Other roads expected to get a facelift include, Ile-Epo Bus Stop – Oko Afo Outward Badagry, Mowo Bus Stop – Elijah Araromi Bridge (both sides), Limca Bus Stop – Mosafejo (both sides), French Village – Low Cost Housing Scheme and Ibereko (both sides).

According to Sodeinde, the repair works on the Lagos-Badagry expressway was in line with the mandate of the present administration to ensure zero tolerance against potholes.

He expressed optimism that when rehabilitation works are completed, it will to a large extent reduce the traffic congestion, assuring that the Public Works gangs will work day and night to on the roads.

“The Governor has said it times without number that he wants all the roads in Lagos to be motorable and free of potholes. He wants the hard life that Lagosians are going through to be alleviated. He cannot stand Lagosians going through hardship due to bad roads.

“You know when the roads are good, it means economic growth, people will be able to move from one part of the state to another, transport their goods without stress, you will notice that even the activities of hoodlums and pickpockets thrive when there is gridlock, as far as gridlock that is being caused by potholes are concerned, we are on our feet to ensure that we put the road in order to reduce the traffic,” Sodeinde said.

Nairaland / General / Lekki Killing: Government White Paper To Be Released Soon by GidiParrot: 9:33am On Mar 26, 2016
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday said the Government White Paper on the civil disturbances that occurred at the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) on October 12, 2015 which led to the killing of Alhaji Tajudeen Disu, Managing Director of Lekki Worldwide Investment Company, would soon be released.

Governor Ambode, who spoke while commissioning electrification project in 67 communities in Ibeju-Lekki area of the state, said no meaningful development can thrive in atmosphere devoid of peace, and as such the people should shun all acts that can lead to break down of law and order.

The late Disu was said to have been shot by assailants during an official visit to one of the villages within the zone.

Specifically, Disu was said to be resolving a land dispute between members of Okunraye community and some private companies embarking on various massive projects within the LFTZ.

Governor Ambode, it would be recalled, had set up a five-man Panel of Inquiry chaired by a retired judge of the Lagos State High Court, Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi, to look into the remote causes of the civil disturbances, and recommend steps to be taken to permanently resolve the issues connected to the clash.

Justice Olateru-Olagbegi, while submitting the report of the panel to Governor Ambode, had said members looked into the remote and immediate causes of disturbances which claimed the life of Disu.

He said that the tribunal also considered ways and means to be adopted to prevent a recurrence.

Olateru-Olagbegi said that the tribunal received 22 memoranda and had 33 witnesses, while 24 recommendations were made.

According to him, the LFTZ has vast potentials to transform the economic landscape of the state in terms of job creation and revenue generation, among others.

Speaking on the planned release of government white paper, Governor Ambode appealed to residents of the state to continue to live together in peace and avoid any act that may result in loss of lives and wanton destruction of lives and property.

He said: “I also make a special appeal to you all especially our community leaders for your cooperation to allow development to come to your communities.

“The disturbances we have had at the Lekki Free Trade Zone are not acceptable as we must join hands together to allow peace to reign.

“A government white paper into the panel of inquiry into the recent civil disturbances will soon be released,” Governor Ambode disclosed.

The Governor also said himself and his team would soon commence a tour of all the Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in May to inspect and commission projects.

Governor Ambode assured that he would also utilize the opportunity of the tour to listen to community leaders, adding that his administration remained committed to run an all-inclusive government.

Celebrities / Ibinabo Could Bag A Second Jail Term - Emeka Ike by GidiParrot: 8:33am On Mar 26, 2016

Following the ruling by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos which removed Ibinabo Fiberesima’s as president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria , Emeka Ike-led executive remains the only authentic and lawful leadership of AGN.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, the actor said that although he has nothing to do with Ibinabo’s predicament, the actress could bag another jail term because of contempt of court.
He said,

“My victory at the court has nothing to do with Ibinabo’s predicament. This case is different and if Ibinabo is going to go to jail for my own case, they should come and beg me. Instead of them to come and beg me, they are still going to the press to say all sorts of rubbish about me. There is still a second jail term for Ibinabo. It is called contempt of court and it would also include Segun Arinze. People have threatened to kill me but I am not scared of them. I am waiting for them and I would look them in the face and tell them that they are evil and I am righteous.

I did not take the issue to the police but straight to the court and I am happy that justice has been served. Anyone that ties Ibinabo’s plight to my victory is only trying to blackmail me and I know they would not stop blackmailing me. How can anyone say that I sent Ibinabo to jail? Am I the Giwa family or the government?”

The actor said he feels bad about Ibinabo’s situation but it could have been prevented if the actress was more remorseful over the death of Dr. Giwa, the young man who was knocked down by the actress over a decade ago. Ike said it was unfortunate that the actress surrounded herself with sycophants who led her to jail.

“How can I be happy that Ibinabo has been sentenced to jail? I feel very bad. The people saying that I am happy about the sentence are actually Ibinabo’s enemies. This is a lady that was used because of the powers she could garner and control. Some people were using her and now that they have messed her up, they are still using her in prison. Ibinabo would never say that Emeka Ike sent her to jail, it is impossible because she knows why she is there. What I was only telling Nigerians is that people of Ibinabo’s status do not contest for any public office. Should we stop telling the truth? She had a criminal issue in court.

Let’s leave sentiments, we have to be realistic. I cannot be happy about her predicament because it is rather unfortunate that she is surrounded by the wrong people and advisers; she was surrounded by sycophants. Instead of them to tell her how to solve her problem, they were pushing her to jail and now that she is in jail, they will not leave her alone. Why did they not advise her to form a team and go to Giwa’s family house and roll on the floor for forgiveness? They could have sent her away for days but they would not send her away forever. We are a cultural people, I am sure that after going repeatedly, an elder in the family would plead on her behalf and say something like, ‘our son is dead and nothing can bring him back, let us just forgive her.’ She should have been very remorseful but she wasn’t. We told Nigerians that some of us would not agree but they began to call us names because we took the matter to court,” he said.
