Education / LASU Vice Chancellor Receives Riot From Students As Birthday Gift (photos/video) by GidiParrot: 8:38pm On Oct 19, 2017
By Lasgidi Online

Lagos State University (LASU) students today gave their Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, riot as a birthday gift, a gift it will take time for him to forget in his lifetime.

According to Lasgidi Online source in the school, the Student Union Governemnt (SUG) election was supposed to hold yesterday but was postponed till today by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) commissioner due to bad internet connection as it is an online election.

Eventually, as the students tried voting today, almost 15 to 20% of students were rejected by the system saying they can't vote again as their matric number have been used to vote before.

That means, the election server was hacked and used for this illegal act behind the students back, the election organizers was just making fool of the students.

The students then marched to the VC's office which today happened to be his birthday, he came out and told them to come back by 4pm, the students came and noticed that he was not in the office.

The students then started protesting in the school, they locked the school gate so that the VC will not go out not knowing that he has left the school before 4pm.

The students eventually spoilt many things in the school and said they don't want e-voting again.

Yesterday, the Bayelsa State Environmental Sanitation Board began the demolition of illegal structures along the only highway that leads into the state capital.

According to the officials, the structures are not befitting of a state capital but the owners have been venting their anger and pleading for more time to move their wares. They also said the traders and other occupants of the structures had been given an order to vacate the area since January, but they did not obey it.

Chairman of the Sanitation Authority, Robert Enogha, “In January this year, we started marking (the structures). Then from April, we started giving abatement notices. Conscious of the fact that things are hard, (and) relocation is also very hard, we gave that grace and I think the grace is overwhelming us. This is September already we have entered the ‘ember months. Conscious of the fact that things are hard, (and) relocation is also very hard, we gave that grace and I think the grace is overwhelming us. This is September already we have entered the ‘ember months’ he said,

According to the demolition team, the structures are defacing the Bayelsa State capital and can as well be a hideout for criminals.

Politics / APC Governors, Ministers Want Buhari To Contest In 2019 - El-rufai by GidiParrot: 8:50pm On Sep 08, 2017
Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai has said governors and ministers under the All Progressives Congress (APC) want President Muhammadu Buhari to contest the 2019 presidential election.

El-Rufa’i said this while speaking with State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Buhari in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday.

He said the governors and ministers made the decision as members of the “Buharist Group”.

The reiterated that he was planning to contest the Presidency in 2019, as widely reported.

According to him, as a member of the “Buharist group’’ he has no presidential ambition.

“My name has continuously been mentioned as a Presidential aspirant s‎ince 2007 after my years in the FCT, there is nothing new about that.

“What I want to say here very, very clearly is that I have never been a Presidential aspirant, I have never even been a gubernatorial aspirant.

“I am governor today by the grace of God because President Buhari called me and said go and run for Governor of Kaduna state.

“As far as 2019 is concerned, my position is the President (Muhammadu Buhari) is looking very well, he is recuperating very fast. My hope and prayer is he will contest in 2019,’’ he said.

On the recent political comments attributed to the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan, El-Rufai said she was never in the Buhari camp.

“This has always been her position because from time she has never supported Buharism or what Buhari stands for.

“Being part of Buhari government is a different thing because government sets policies and if you are a minister you execute the policies. You can execute those policies while pursuing a different brand of politics,’’ he said.

He added, “Look, you can retain a person in the cabinet even if he doesn’t support you if he adds value to the country. Because this is a government, it is not a political group fighting for some political progress.

“If Jummai Alhassan is coming as Minister of Women Affairs and adding value to the government and the people of Nigeria it is the President’s prerogative to retain her in spite of her political views.

“But if she is not adding value in spite of her political views she can be dispensed with…… people shouldn’t get worried about it. I have worked closely with the President, I know him and I know how he thinks. He doesn’t take these things personally…. What is primary to him is Nigeria’s progress… that is what matters ultimately.”

Career / Benue Workers Embarks On One Week Warning Strike by GidiParrot: 1:56pm On Sep 07, 2017
Benue State Government workers on Tuesday commenced a one-week warning strike at the end of the notice given to the state government by the Nigeria Labour Congress, Benue State chapter over an alleged failure by the government to pay workers’ salaries.

The NLC Chairman, Godwin Anya; the Chairman, Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, Victor Philip; and Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Ordue Tartenger, directed workers to proceed on the strike on Tuesday.

The unions noted that the governor did not have any excuse not to pay the salaries of workers with the regular federal allocations, internally generated revenue, budget support funds, Paris Club loan refund and the stabilisation funds accruing to the state.

They appealed to the governor to pay all categories of workers in the state.

Anya expressed delight with the level of compliance on Tuesday in Makurdi, the state capital.

Anya said the doors of the union were still open for negotiation with the government.

When our correspondent visited some government ministries and offices, public schools and the state secretariat among other places in Makurdi, the offices were deserted.

Officials of the organised labour in the state were also seen monitoring and enforcing the strike.

Tartenger, the monitoring team leader, said the level of compliance was commendable, saying it “it is 95 per cent successful.”

The state workers are reportedly owed six-month salaries while local government workers are owed eight months.

Foreign Affairs / Hurricane Irma Destroyed 95% Of The Buildings On Barbuda Island by GidiParrot: 10:00am On Sep 07, 2017
About 24-hours ago, Hurricane IRMA made landfall in Puerto Rico with heavy rain and powerful winds leaving nearly 900,000 people without power as authorities struggled to get aid to small Caribbean islands.

Nearly every building on the island of Barbuda was damaged when the eye of the storm passed and about 60 percent of the island's roughly 1,400 people were left homeless,

Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne told The Associated Press. "Either they were totally demolished or they would have lost their roof. It is just really a horrendous situation."

He said roads and telecommunications systems were destroyed and recovery will take months, if not years. He also said a 2-year-old child was killed as a family tried to escape a damaged home during the storm.

The U.S. National Weather Service said Puerto Rico had not seen a hurricane of Irma's magnitude since Hurricane San Felipe in 1928, which killed a total of 2,748 people in Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico and Florida.

“We need to look at a realistic solution to this problem, the dredging of River Benue is very important in addressing this flood issue and we will do something about it,’’ the President said.

Buhari said government was not only concerned about this year’s flood disaster but the 2012 disaster too and would find permanent solution to Benue incessant flooding.

Earlier, Gov. Samuel Ortom, while welcoming the President, appealed to the Federal Government to assist the state in dredging the river and complete ongoing drainage system in the state.

Ortom also commended the President for his prompt response and provision of relief materials to the flood victims.

He said that the state had received eight-truck load of relief materials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), adding that five were on the way.

He said Nasarawa State Government also donated four trucks of relief materials.

Foreign Affairs / Expect ‘more Gift Packages’ – North Korea Warns US by GidiParrot: 11:10pm On Sep 05, 2017
North Korea on Tuesday said the country was ready to send “more gift packages’’ to the United States.

Han Song, North Korea ambassador to the UN, made the announcement in Geneva in his address at the UN-sponsored conference on Disarmament two days after his country detonated its sixth nuclear test explosion.

“I am proud of saying that just two days ago on September 3, Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) successfully carried out hydrogen bomb test for intercontinental ballistic rocket.

“The test was carried out under our plan for building a strategic nuclear force,” Han told the Geneva forum.

“The recent self-defence measures by DPRK, are a ‘gift package’ addressed to none other than the U.S.

“The U.S. will receive more ‘gift packages’ from my country as long as it relies on reckless provocations and futile attempts to put pressure on the DPRK.”

The diplomat said that military measures being taken by North Korea were “an exercise of restraint and justified self-defence right.”

He added that they were intended to counter “the ever-growing and decade-long U.S. nuclear threat and hostile policy aimed at isolating my country’’.

“Pressure or sanctions will never work on my country,” Han declared, adding, “DPRK will never under any circumstances put its nuclear deterrence on the negotiating table.”

U.S. disarmament ambassador Robert Wood said that North Korea had defied the international community once again with its test.

“We look forward to working with our partners in the Security Council with regard to a new resolution that will put some of the strongest sanctions possible on the DPRK.

“Advances in the regime are nuclear and missile programme are a threat to us all. Now is the time to say tests, threats and destabilising actions will no longer be tolerated.
