The Federal Government, throught the Ministry of Education, has scrapped Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME). A statement issued and signed by Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Mr Ben Goong quoted the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu as saying that the ban was with immediate effect. “Under no circumstance should any institution violate the directive. The responsibility for admission into public tertiary institutions lies solely with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and, under no circumstance, whatsoever, should anybody or institution take over that responsibility by proxy. “For the avoidance of doubt, any educational institution after secondary education is regarded as a tertiary institution. Therefore, all tertiary institutions, polytechnics, colleges of education, universities or by whatever name it is called after secondary education, must be subjected to admission through JAMB.’’ The statement said at the end of probationary admission by JAMB, candidates could be screened for final admission. It said any institution with a shortfall in admission could revert to JAMB for supplementary admission. The minister also said screening, in this case, entails only the verification of certificates of the candidates, JAMB scores, and any other physical examination to ensure that such candidates are not cultists. “After this, candidates are qualified for matriculation. Such screening should be at no cost to the parents or students and should be done upon resumption, in order to avoid unnecessary travels in search of admission,’’ the statement added. It said the clarification became necessary in order to erase doubts in some quarters regarding the real stance of the minister. “As far as I am concerned, if the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing, the universities should not be holding another examinations. “If the universities have any complaint against JAMB, let them bring it and then, we address it. But, if JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests and they have conducted the test, then, there will be no need to conduct another test for students to gain admission,’’ Adamu said in an earlier statement. The statement quoted the minister as saying that there had been no empirical evidence to show that since the inception of Post-UTME, universities had been having better quality students. The statement said the minister had directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) and appropriate departments in the ministry to communicate the directive to relevant agencies and institutions, to ensure strict compliance. “Those who have already advertised for the conduct of the post-UTME under any guise should stop the exercise immediately as any university caught conducting post-UTMNE will face appropriate sanctions. Meanwhile, former Vice Chancellor of Wesley University, Professor Tola Badejo, has advised the Federal Government to make post UTME optional. Speaking on a Channels Televsion programme, Sunrise Daily, Badejo maintained that authorities of various institutions should be allowed to decide how to accept candidates. “Why should you tell somebody not to organise screening when, before you leave any university, you have to be found competent in character and learning. “If I have to do that, why should someone tell me not to interview every candidate?” the don questioned. http://myschoolforum.com/p/319748/fg-formally-bans-post-utme |

Apostle Johnson Suleman has reacted to the backlash that trailed his proclamation that Biafra is dead and buried and agitators should suspend their quest. It was earlier reported that the fiery prophet in an interview with Encomium magazine during the weekend asked Igbos to forget the agitation as they can’t even rule themselves. “The Igbo cannot even rule themselves; they should go and sit down. “There is IPOB, MASSOB, you can see that they are already having division. You have not been able to rule yourselves and you want to rule a nation, it’s not possible. “They should forget this agenda and seek relevance and not creation of a nation. It’s now a mind-set. It’s not achievable because the real people who would have fought for Biafra are no longer in existence,” However the apostle has retracted his statement following series of backlash from pro-Biafra agitators. In a series of tweets, the religious cleric said he was not against Igbo people nor did he hate them. He said he has been calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and is not against Biafra. After Biafran Twitter expert presented the publication to him, He rushed and deleted the tweet. Is he truely a man of God? http://biafrasay.com/p/321371/

The management of the institution has been receiving disturbing complaints and news notifications that several fraudsters pose as management staff and admission agents of the school in order to sell admission forms to unsuspecting admission seekers. The school authorities will inform the entire public through its official website when the respective admission forms are out and on sale. But in the mean time, any person posing to be a member of staff or an admission agent of the university who wants to sell admission forms to candidates is a fraud. Any candidate that goes into business with such person does so at his or her own risk. http://myschoolforum.com/p/319721/

About one in five students failed the recent law school examination and will not be called to the bar, official results show. The results show that 23. 6 per cent of students who sat for the final examination conducted by the Nigerian Law School will not make it to the Nigerian Bar Association this June. The figure represents 720 candidates who sat for the examination held in April. Potential candidates to the bar must sit and pass the final examination by the Nigerian Law School, to be qualified for the call to bar, scheduled to take place on June 12. A statement from the Director General of the law school, Olanrewaju Anadeko, said 73 per cent of those who took part in the examination in April passed it. Out of 3,056 candidates who partook in the examination this year, 2, 232 candidates passed, while 104 of them had conditional passes, apart from the 720 candidates who failed the examination, the statement said. According to Section four of the Legal Practitioners Act, candidates must meet all other requirements to qualify for the call to bar. Section 4 (2) of the Act implies that the 104 candidates with conditional passes, representing 3.4 per cent of the total number of candidates, cannot rely solely on their kind of result to make it to bar. Information provided by the school states that after concluding their study at the Nigerian Law School, successful candidates are given their certificates from the council and then called to bar by the Body of Benchers, ‘subject to the provisions of the Legal Practitioners Act’. The Council of Legal Education is the regulatory body for the Nigeria Law School, which must be attended by persons willing to practice law in Nigeria. It also determines the steps to be taken by persons who have obtained a university degree in law from a foreign institution and are willing to practice as lawyers in Nigeria. The Nigerian law school and the Council of Legal Education were established in 1962, following the enactment of the Legal Education Act to ensure the study of the Nigerian customary law by prospective members of the bench. http://myschoolforum.com/p/319712/20-per-cent-fail-nigerian-law-school-examinations

The Federal Government has adopted the use of a local oil spill management product developed by a University of Ilorin Professor of Chemical Engineering, Sulyman Age AbdulKareem, in its renewed efforts to clean up the oil-soaked lands of the Niger Delta. Abdulkareem said that the product, for which he received a patent in 2005, is capable of saving the country substantial amount in foreign exchange. The scientist who was the winner of the Best Researcher of the Year award in 2005, commended the federal government for showing renewed commitment towards tackling oil spillage in the country through the use of local resources. He disclosed that he made the product from disposed water sachets, and that “the material has the property of selectively picking up oil and organics and leaving water intact.” “When I got that product, I related it to what I was doing in the United States because in the US, we were buying fresh polymers to make a material that was used for oil spill management in the West. But immediately I was able to get this product from the disposed water sachets, and investigated the properties, I was actually excited that it could be the same thing that a whole unit was set up to do in the US and that was what started it.” http://myschoolforum.com/p/319709/fg-adopts-unilorin-don-s-oil-spill-clean-up-tool

The Lagos State University has suspended a second year Computer Science undergraduate, (name withheld), for being in possession of a substance suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp). The suspension is contained in the university’s bulletin made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos. The bulletin said the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, suspended the student in line with the powers conferred on him by Section 28 of the Law establishing the institution. According to the bulletin, the suspension will subsist until he appears before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee of the university to defend himself. It said the institution’s security men apprehended him on May 3, 2016, with the suspected substance. The bulletin said that possession of such hard drugs contravened the rules and regulations governing the university. “In view of this development, the student is not expected to participate in the academic activities of the university until the suspension is lifted.’’ http://myschoolforum.com/p/319704/news-lasu-suspends-indian-hemp-smoking-computer-science-unde

Hope of ending the industrial action embarked upon by health workers at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, University of Uyo Teaching hospital branch of the Association of Resident Doctors and health workers at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yenagoa, Bayelsa State dimmed yesterday as the unions vowed to continue with the strike. At LUTH, the nurses and midwives under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) yesterday said the indefinite strike was to press home their demands. They also said the protest was against what they called stagnation, non-payment of salary and inadequate facilities. The state Chairman of NANNM, Mr. Olurotimi Awojide, told journalists in Lagos that the association had given the management a seven-day ultimatum which expired on June 9. Other demands are the outstanding 2015 promotion results of 71 nurses, non-payment of nurses employed in 2015, lack of consumables, inadequate manpower and irregular water and power supply. He said: “We have been having series of problems with LUTH management for a while now which we have made effort to resolve but all to no avail. We have written series of letters to them on pressing issues, they are not responding and that is why we are taking this action. “For quite some time now nurses work at night without light, leaving them with no choice of using torchlight and phones to attend to patients. “This is a teaching hospital and infection control should be our priority and when there are no consumables, water, people impro-vise to attend to patients.” The Chairman of NANNM, LUTH chapter, Mrs. Oluyemisi Adelaja, said inadequate equipment had affected the nurses’ care for patients in the hospital. Adelaja said the strike was meant to call on the management and the Federal Ministry of Health to apply the same measures in LUTH as being done in other 52 federal health institutions. “We want them to do the needful by giving our members their promotion as and when due and applying the same measures being applied to other health institutions to us.” Contacted, the Public Relations Officer of LUTH, Mr. Kelechi Otuneme, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the management had not reacted yet on the development. NAN also reports that few nurses were seen attending to some patients, while others joined the protest. At UNIUYO, the doctors said they were embarking on the strike to protest against “incomplete salaries.” President of the association, Dr. Christian Adeneye, said in an interview with NAN in Uyo yesterday, that the doctors in the hospital had been receiving incomplete salaries since 2014, saying all efforts to make government see reason on the mater had failed. “We are embarking on an indefinite strike from today. The problem is about the incomplete salaries that we have been receiving for two years now. Advertisement “We have been mandated nationally that all centres that are yet to comply with the implementation of the payment of our full salaries should embark on an indefinite strike.” He said that the strike had not been postponed as was speculated by a section of the media. The unionist confirmed, however, that there was a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, where it was agreed that medical centres that were already enjoying full salaries should not join the strike. The president said the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital was not in the list of teaching hospitals enjoying full salaries, so doctors there had to embark on strike. Meanwhile, moves to resolve the ongoing strike by health workers at the FMC Yenagoa dimmed yesterday as a meeting between labour leaders and the hospital’s management ended in a stalemate. The National Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) FMC Yenagoa chapter had on May 11 commenced an indefinite strike over pay cuts in the salaries of staff at the hospital since January. The strike had paralysed the out-patients and laboratory services as well as the physiotherapy, radiotherapy and records departments of the hospital since May 11. It was gathered that a meeting with the management team led by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Dennis Allagoa, ended in a stalemate as the workers representatives staged a walk out. Chairman of NUAHP, Mr. Oginike Lante, said the labour leaders walked out of the meeting in disappointment following the hard stance posture of management which did not meeting the minimum expectation of workers. “There was nothing new that management offered apart from the promises we have been hearing since January, and the threat that we should accept the promise ‘now or never’ and that was unacceptable to workers,” Lante said. He said they were compelled to commence the indefinite strike after giving the mandatory 28 notice following many unfulfilled promises and vowed that workers will not to return to work until they get full salaries and arrears. However, Allagoa in a reaction explained that the problem was as a result of budgetary shortfall in the hospital, noting that the health workers were being paid 53.7 percent of their salaries with available funds. Sources at the hospital had disclosed that out of about N 240 million wage bill of the hospital, it received less than N180 million. Allagoa said the hospital management had informed the Federal Ministry of Health of the development and remained hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon. “From January this year, we saw that our budget was N173 million and that amount was insufficient to pay both for new employment and the old ones. We reached out to the government and they asked us to pay whatever we have. “They promised that they will give us a supplementary budget, and the striking workers can verify this. Therefore, the money came to 53.7 per cent,” he said. http://myschoolforum.com/p/319695/tension-as-luth-uuth-begin-indefinite-strike

Tears flowed freely on Friday at the Ikoyi Cemetary, Lagos, as the remains of Adesola Ogunmefun and Olufunmilayo Odusina, two University of Lagos post-graduate students who drowned and died during one of their friend’s birthday party at a private beach in the Lekki area of the city on June 6, 2016, were finally laid to rest. An emotional tribute service which started as early as 11:00am, saw family members, friends and well wishers of the departed young women pour out in droves to bid them farewell. In glowing words, mourners at the event paid tributes to the victims who many described as very charming and promising. Sunmibola Ogunmefun, a sibling to the late Adesola, said even though the family is in mourning, they are consoled by the good life she lived and impact she made during her sojourn on earth. “Very simplistic, you’ve never been the kind to take things too seriously and your smile is from ear to ear. Keeping malice with you was futile, you’d always find a way to break the ice…never one to hold grudge. “Sola, in your short years on earth, you’ve connected us with so many people and your death has brought reconciliation…you are indeed a special one,” she said while paying homage to her late sister. Modupe Mujota, a boss to the late Adesola, described her as not only a workaholic but also a young lady with a warm heart. In her tribute, she said, “Desola took care of me. She would wake me up daily at 6am and like a child I would often beg her for 15 more minutes. As many times as I asked, she would oblige me, she was that caring. “Desola, our loss is heaven’s gain, light it up as always with your brilliant smiles. We love you dearly.” Born on April 12, 1989, Adesola attended the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria Staff School Ikeja, Lagos, Home Science Association of Nigeria Secondary School and Covenant University before proceeding to the University of Lagos for a Masters degree in International Law. Until her painful demise, she worked as Personal Assistant to the Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Ogun State. Odusina equally described as an easy-going and lovable young woman, was born on February 13, 1991. http://myschoolforum.com/p/319690/drowned-unilag-students-buried-amid-tears

MEND YOUR CRIMINAL DAYS ARE OVER. We appeal to the general public and all sane minds on the activities of Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) to disregards all purported statements and misplaced threat emanating from disbanded criminal elements like the so-called MEND (Movement For the Emancipation of The Niger Delta) that are political sidekicks and desperations from Gov. Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state, Mr. Timipre Silva and their political paymasters to hold their political party to the jugular of the affairs of the Niger Delta Region. That our struggle is focused on the liberation of the People of Niger Delta from decades of divisive rule and exclusion. We are watching keenly their regretful efforts at rebranding and regrouping criminal elements in the region for their short political gains and territories. The NDA is unperturbed, we have mandate that is clearly a departure of those old tactics of the defunct so-called MEND that was indulged in kidnapping, hostage taking, Sea piracy, illegal oil bunkering, bank robberies and social crimes, the likes of Boyloafs, Ateke Toms, were associated to in their days in the name struggle. The wind of change in the Niger Delta struggle has come, we are are young, smart, and focused Niger deltans. Our mandate is to liberate the Niger Delta people; we don’t run after pipeline contracts. Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, Borno NSCDC Commandant stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The commandant said that some patriotic citizens alerted the command on the circulation of the adulterated commodity. “We have been receiving distress calls from the public. “A man from Maduganari reported that his house was almost gutted by fire because he used adulterated kerosene. “We are surprised how they mixed kerosene and petrol, We don’t know whether it is another ploy by Boko Haram to cause havoc,’’ he said.
