No... , dividends paid out of profits exempted from income tax are not subject to withholding tax, and if you check WAPCO 2022 audited report on page 65 you will see that company income tax is 0.

Audited one of these listed companies some years ago and I just shook my head in pity for retail investors. The main shareholder would have cashed out like 20 - 30% of profits before declaring dividends. In that particular audit, N350m was paid as consultancy fees to the ultimate parent while N1b was declared as dividend that year The corporate governance culture in our listed companies is still very poor. Just check the professional and consultancy fees section of the latest financial statements of some of these listed companies and see how overbloated they are - Thats the cash out line for them.

Impact would definitely be positive but not far-reaching.

That said, exiting FIDELITY @ N6 ought to have been a logical thing to do.
As I said then; inherent risk didn't leave much room for feasible reward in view of how the coys FVE relates to it's pricing. (RRM/MiS in view)... so exchanging Fidelity for the duo of UBA and STERLING wouldn't be a bad idea.

Fidelity has already did well to deliver above 200% return to those who keyed in @ </=N2.
The banks Q1 and by extension H1, 2023 will help give more clue going forward.

Increasing dividends show confidence about the future by management.

Some of us doubt the earnings of some of the companies, we only believe the dividends.


But investors should investigate the source of the dividend payments.


Dividend should not be more than the free cash flow, in that case the dividend safety and sustainability is a suspect.

The free cash flow of one of the cement makers is N45 billion but total dividend is almost N100 billion. The company will have to get bank loans in order to pay the dividend. Management can do crazy things in order to defend their stock price, like the way Emefiele tried to defend Naira


I am of the opinion that dividend declared should not be more than 80% of the Free cash flow
