A Zambian Pastor, Brighton Samajomba has died from malnutrition after fasting for 20 days. He was 10 days away from completing his 30 days fast.

He was a Preacher at “Heaven Is My Home” church in Kazomba Township of Solwezi.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has obtained orders for the interim forfeiture of assets traced to a former Imo governor, Rochas Okorocha, and his wife.

The Head, Enugu Zonal Office of the commission, Mr Usman Imam, disclosed this on Wednesday in Enugu while briefing newsmen on the activities of the commission in the last eight months.

Imam said that the commission also obtained similar order on a property traced to a former aide to Okorocha, Mr Paschal Obi, and the former governor’s daughter.

He said that the commission had established prima facie cases against the suspects which they would answer to.

Imam said that the commission would like to know how the Rochas Foundation and other accomplices acquired and or converted some of the property for personal use.

He listed some of the property to include a 16-block cum 96 flats and an eight-bungalow multimillion naira estate, hotel, two schools, shopping plaza, supermarket, hospital and four vehicles.

The EFCC chief said that while the hospital was traced to Obi, the remaining property were traced to the former governor and his family, including his wife and daughter.

“We hope to get permanent forfeiture orders on the property in order to return them to the people of the state,” he said.

Imam said that all the facilities, including the schools, would remain functional as the commission would not like to shut them down for the sake of the students and other users.

“Other recoveries were made and are awaiting forfeiture, but for the court vacation. They include a twin three-storey building with a three bedroom bungalow and a duplex, both in Enugu.

“The property were recovered from cyber fraudsters,” he said.

Imam said that the commission, within the period, recovered N213.85 million and 10, 600 US dollars.

“In one of such recoveries, one Augustine Ejimokor, who defrauded his victim of the sum of 5,000 US dollars and used it to acquire a Mercedez Benz C300 was ordered to forfeit the vehicle.

“So far, the zone has arrested 88 suspected fraudsters since 2015, with 70 of them in 2019. This underscores the efforts of the present zonal head in conformity with the acting chairman’s directives,” he said.

Imam said that the zone also obtained 59 convictions out of whom were the 51 arrested and prosecuted in 2019.

There was palpable tension in Onitsha, Anambra State on Wednesday following alleged reprisal attack plot by angry youths on Shoprite Shopping Complex.

The Nation gathered that the irate youths had stormed the Shoprite facility and nearly gained access to the building but for immediate intervention of security operatives.

The irate youths had planned to register their displeasure against the xenophobic attacks of Nigerians in South Africa.

The video of the attacks, which went viral on the social media, had triggered the youths’ anger as they threatened to attack Shoprite and other South African owned business outfits in the commercial city.

The attention of the Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Anambra State Vigilante, AVS, were however drawn to the unusual movement of youths as they quickly cordoned off all the roads linking to the mall.

Consequently, authority of Shopping Complex, quickly directed staff to leave the mall to forestal any attack while residents and customers scampered for safety for fear of being caught in the crossfires.

When our correspondent visited the area, the ever busy shopping complex was a ghost of itself.

Human and vehicular movements were restricted by heavily armed and stern- looking Policemen.
Some of the youths were however sighted lurking around as they sought for the slightest opportunity to cause mayhem in the complex.

Efforts by reporters to take photographs of the closed shopping complex were rebuffed by the stern- looking security men who insisted no shots be taken.

There were however skeletal services at the two outlets of the MTN office in Awka, Anambra state capital.

Staff of the company were at the close of work on Tuesday instructed to operate from home following Monday xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

An officer, who spoke with The Nation on condition of anonymity, said: “We can’t toy with the safety of our staff and customers in view of the recent events in the Country.

Uche Ogbodo ignited the wrath of Ghanaians and Nigerians after she addressed Ghana as 'ordinary' in her rant against the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The mother of one had described the attacks as inhumane and also called for a retaliation. She further roped in "ordinary" Ghana into her rant of countries that spring up fights against Nigeria with no 'equal response'.

She wrote;

I hate South Africa just for this inhuman act. Who the hell do they think they are? And why are Nigerian so dull at retaliation? This is evil and highly condemnable. Very wicked! I weep for my country Nigeria. It is so sad that other people can just spring up fights against US and we still lay low and do nothing about it. Even ordinary Ghana. WHY? WHY? WHY? God will not come down from heaven to save us physically! We have to fight for ourselves. XENOPHOBIA IS EVIL and we need to RETALIATE! A pound for a pound. SAY NO TO XENOPHOBIA

Uche Ogbodo however got lampooned by Nigerians and South Africans, forcing her to delete the post and turn off her comment section on Instagram.

BOBRISKY’s story is not easy to tell. The first problem is deciding what pronoun to use. By the circumstances of his birth, ‘he’ is the right pronoun, but by what Bobrisky has chosen, ‘she’ is correct.

“Tani bro e? (Who is your bro?). I’m a fine babe,” Bobrisky once replied a commentator who referred to him as a man.

There is also no agreement on whether or not he is a transvestite or just a crossdresser.

Who is Bobrisky?

A primary school mate said he had always behaved like a woman trapped in a man’s body.

In a video, which was uploaded on YouTube on January 19, 2018, a dark man sporting a white bathrobe on a white t-shirt, is sitting on a brown sofa.

There is a gold chain around his neck and in his right hand is a wad of N1,000 notes and a glass of wine.

He pulls out note after note with his left hand and places it on the waist of a light-skinned dancer in a black tight-fitting trouser and crop top, shaking a slim bottom in his face.

The man kisses the tips of his left palm and touches the dancer’s waist excitedly before the video stops playing.

The video is titled ‘Bobrisky twerking for her sugar daddy’.

The dancer in the 11-second video is popular transvestite, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, his name on social media platform, Snap Chat.

Idris, from Ijebu Igbo in Ogun State, was born male on August 31, 1992 at Ebute Meta, Lagos Mainland.

He attended secondary school at the prestigious King’s College, Lagos, before bagging a BSc from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

He was a very good dancer, choreographer and make-up artist at the university. In May 2019, Bobrisky stated on his instagram profile that his pronouns are “she” and “her”.

Going viral

It is not clear when Idris became the cross-dressing Bobrisky, but he went viral in October 2016, when President Muhammadu Buhari’s social media aide, Bashir Ahmad, pulled out of appearing with him on a social media panel in Abuja.

“The organisers invited me to speak on the fact that people are talking about Bobrisky,” the then 25-year-old told AFP.

He added: “Withdrawing wasn’t nice. In Nigeria, the majority of people here judge you so fast.”

According to AFP, he often recounted online how his lifestyle was funded by a rich, mystery man he referred to only as “bae.

A few years earlier, a video surfaced of Bobrisky being stripped by the police of the female clothing he was wearing. Two sachets of water – pseudo breasts – were pulled out of the low neck gown.

Controversies

Bobrisky, who turned 28 on Saturday, fled his Lekki, Lagos neighbourhood to evade arrest following the deployment of policemen to scuttle his planned birthday celebrations.

He had planned a birthday bash at the Pearls Gardens in Lekki Phase 1 on Saturday and another at the Paradise Boat Club, Victoria Island on Sunday.

But Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu ordered the deployment of water-tight security to ensure the party did not hold and also arrest Bobrisky and other crossdressers or homosexuals who planned to attend.

The Nation gathered that five suspected members of Bobrisky’s club were arrested for breach of the public peace and indecency.

According to the police, the government would not allow continuous breach of existing laws, noting that allowing the public display of actions that could corrupt young people was inimical to national consciousness.

Earlier in the week, the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, threatened to go after Bobrisky and others like him, describing the cross-dresser as “a disgrace to the nation.” Bobrisky replied by saying Runsewe was a small fry.

The police had earlier in the year warned all homosexuals to flee the country or be dealt with in accordance with the Anti-Same Sex Marriage Law which prescribes a 14-year jail term for all persons involved in a homosexual relationship.

Former Public Relations Officer of the Zone 2 Police Command, Mrs Dolapo Badmos, had said: “If you are homosexually inclined, Nigeria is not a place for you. There is a law here that criminalises homosexual clubs, associations, and organisations with penalties of up to 14 years in jail.

“So, if you are a homosexual in nature, leave the country or face prosecution. But before you say, ‘does this matter?’ Kindly note that anything against the law of the land is criminal and all crimes will be punished accordingly no matter how small you think it is.”

What the law says

The law Badmos is referring to is the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2013. It says a person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies or organisations, directly or indirectly makes a public show of same-sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 10 years. Anyone convicted of entering into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union faces up to 14 years imprisonment.

Pronouns controversy

Following the police’s raid, Nigerians on social media were divided over the use of the pronoun he to refer to Bobrisky.

Bisi Alimi, a gay man and advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights cautioned that the right pronoun for Bobrisky is ‘she’ and ‘her’.

“Dear #Nigeria allies, the correct pronoun for #Bobrisky is “She/Her”. Using this will help reduce stigma and show that you really care. You can’t use a wrong pronoun and say you are an ally,” he tweeted.

“Just In: Bobrisky on the run as Police Storms. Shutdown venue if his 27th birthday celebration in Lekki, chase away everyone,” Iselaiye tweeted to which Ogunmuyiwa replied, “HER!!! Her pronouns are she/her!!! And this us transmisogynistic violence.”

Another user, @whoislateef, mockingly asked, “So which cell will they put Bobrisky Female cell: Naaaah Male cell: Honeymoon.”

What does the future hold for the like of Bobrisky?

A 2017 survey by NOI Polls compared attitudes towards LGBT people in Nigeria against a 2015 poll.

It found a seven per cent increase in acceptance of LGBT people, and a nine per cent rise to 39 per cent of those surveyed who think that LGBT people should be allowed equal access to public services, such as healthcare, education and housing.

However, the poll showed a four per cent increase to 90 per cent of Nigerians who support the criminalisation of same-sex relationships, and no change in the proportion of Nigerians who believe that the country would be a better place with no LGBT people, also 90 per cent.

Will Nigerian society ever accept cross-dressing and other LGBT lifestyles, such as Bobrisky’s? Only time will tell.

But, on the day of the event after we had taken our pictures, I was tricked to the office by my mentors and to my surprise my team and friends had planned a surprise reception party for us.

I have never been that surprised in my entire life. I was so shocked, that it took me hours to recover fully. One of the most heartwarming thing was that the team members who have moved on from the company, contributed towards the reception, as well.

Policemen from Badagry Police Station have been accused of causing the death of a 21-year-old man at the Badagry area of Lagos State.

According to witnesses, the deceased, Kenneth Akachukwu Ogbonna, died after policemen from Badagry station, stormed the community on Tuesday about 8p.m.

The policemen were alleged to have gone into the community to raid a popular bar, Pathfinder Bar, around Marina Badagry area, when the policemen entered the place. The bar is located by the sea side.

It was learnt that on sighting the policemen, all those in the bar, including the deceased, took to their heels. In the heat of the panic and confusion, Ogbonna fell into the sea.

According to witnesses, policemen stopped divers, who were willing to rescue Ogbonna, to leave him to drown.

The community is still protesting against the actions of the policemen. Ogbonna’s body has not been recovered as at the time of this report.

A TV host broke down in tears as she apologized for saying her black colleague looks like a gorilla live on air.

Alex Housden, during a TV show segment about a gorilla, commented about a gorilla at Oklahoma City’s zoo by telling black colleague Jason Hackett: "Kinda looks like you."

Her racist statement elicited a backlash as people called for her to be fired from KOCO-TV, and she was forced to apologise the following day.

She groveled as she said sorry to Jason Hackett on Oklahoma’s KOCO-TV last Thursday, August 22.

Breaking down in tears, Housden said: "I’m here this morning, because I want to apologize. Not only to my co-worker Jason, but to our entire community.



"I said something yesterday that was inconsiderate, it was inappropriate and I hurt people. And i want you to know I understand how much I hurt you out there."

She then faced Hackett and said: "I know how much I hurt you. I love you so much. You are one of my best friends for the last year and a half and I would never do anything on purpose to hurt you.

"And I love our community. And I want you to know that from the bottom of my heart I apologize for what I said. I know it was wrong and I am so sorry."

Hackett quickly forgave her. He said he "accepted and appreciated" Housden’s apology.

He added: "Alex is one of my best friends. What she said yesterday was wrong. It cut deep for me and a lot of you in the community.

"I want this to be a teachable moment… words matter, there’s no doubt about that."

Jackye in a chat with Ebuka after her eviction from the Big Brother Naija House, talked about Tacha and her alleged interest in Mike.

The evicted housemate affirmed that her relationship with Mike had no romance attached to it but was more of him playing a big brother role while she was still in the house. She also spoke against the stereotype of linking romance to a friendship between a married man and an unmarried lady.

Jackye further disclosed that living with people was her hardest part of staying in the Big Brother House. She revealed that she sees Tacha as a walking time bomb that any one can light up to explode. The evicted housemate also said she didn't see Tacha as someone she could have a conversation with, without it tilting to a negative side.

On Gedoni and Khafi having sex in the house, Jackye said it was not entirely true as she feels that Khafi sometimes lets out her guilt by confessing some parts of her affair to her.
