The parents of Raphael Ogunwole and Godwin Mbachu, who were allegedly kidnapped in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos, have condemned the refusal of the police to rescue them two weeks after the incident.

The victims’ parents said despite the arrest of some suspects, not much had been done by the police.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Raphael and Godwin were kidnapped in front of their parents’ residence on Oluwakemi Street, Ilasamaja, on August 14.

It was gathered that the boys, who were playing in front of the house, were abducted when their parents went inside.

The fathers of the victim, who condemned the police disposition towards the matter, urged the state Commissioner of Police to intervene in the case.

Godwin’s father, Christian, who noted that losing his child was a gap that could not be filled, urged all the security agencies to join hands with the police to rescue the children.

The 47-year-old printer, who noted that the information at his disposal was given to the police, urged them to act accordingly.

He stated, “When my wife realised that she could no longer hear the voices of the children playing outside, she sent my eldest son to check them outside and he came back to tell her that they were not there.

“A search party was raised and we reported at the police stations around us. This incident happened when Raphael’s mother went inside to serve her husband his meal. Someone must have been watching the kids and waited for the right time to strike.

“After waiting for five days and the Ilasamaja Police Station did not do anything and the pressure we mounted on them was too much, the case was transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Surulere; but to be sincere, the police have done nothing on the case.

“Up till now, the police have not come up with any reasonable explanation despite the information provided to them. We want the police to do their work because we know that if they want to, they can do it; and at the same time, we are appealing to Nigerians that anybody who sees these children should contact the police, their parents or the media, because I’m sure they are still in this country and someone will see them.

“Losing a child is something you cannot describe, it’s an everlasting gap until the child is found; the feeling is unbearable because you can’t eat and sleep; all your thoughts are with the child. It’s the worst feeling someone can ever have.

“I want the police to work with the information given to them. Three days after my child went missing, someone was caught taking away another child in the same Ilasamaja and he was arrested.

“When he was handed over to the police, he answered all questions asked him, but the following day, he started behaving like a mad person and when he was brought to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the cops there said he was insane and I asked who certified him a lunatic, but I was told to pick the hospital bill to ascertain if he was mad.

“We are appealing to the Lagos State Government and the good people of the country to intervene and beg the police to do their job.”

Raphael’s father, Oluwaseun, urged the police to interrogate the suspects arrested, alleging that one of the suspects knew the whereabouts of the children.

He said, “We learnt that six suspects have been arrested and one of them is a barber, who has a barbershop on our street. We noticed that he travelled the day after the boys went missing.

“Someone told us that he saw someone taking the children towards Abimbola Way in Isolo and that the person was usually at the barbershop, but when we called the barber to ask him about the person, he said he did not know him, but the next day when we went to his house, we were told that he vacated the building about a month ago and when I called him, he said he was on his way to his village because his father wanted to see all his children. That is why we are taking him as the prime suspect.

“Someone told me that before the barber was arrested, he went to the bank to collect money. I want the police to trace the money and see where it came from or it went to. We call on Nigerians to help us; we don’t know what to do again.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, stated that the police were working on reuniting the children with their parents.

“Investigation is ongoing; it is a case of missing children and not kidnapping, because nobody has called for any ransom or establish contact with the families at the moment. We are investigating and our team is working so hard on this matter to get to the root of it and reunite the children with their parents,” he said.

CrimeWhy I Collected N370k Settlement From My Daughter’s HIV+ Rapist - Dad by GistMore4(op): 10:33am On Aug 29, 2019
The police in Rivers State have released a 75-year-old man, Shedrack Ejinwo, arrested last week for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl at Kendox Medical Services, where he received treatment as an HIV patient.

A Delta-based human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, who confirmed the release of the suspect in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said Ejinwo entered into an out-of-court settlement with the father of the victim, Rufus Felix, to pay N370,000 monthly until February 2020.

Gwamnishu, who is the Director-General, Behind Bars Rights Foundation, claimed the victim was persuaded by the wife of the medical director of the clinic, where she worked as a salesgirl, to keep the rape a secret and placed on treatment.

He said, “When that (rape) happened, they placed the girl on drugs for prevention of the virus. So, they opened a card for the girl at the hospital. The man has been released from custody based on a settlement agreement.”

A copy of the settlement seen by our correspondent showed that the signatories included Ejinwo, counsel for the suspect, Amaechi Enere, counsel for the victim, Ibe Ukagha, State PRO, Behind Bars Initiative, Mr Emmanuel Wokoma, Mr Ogbonna Asonye and the victim’s father.

It read in part, “That Chief Shedrack N. Ejinwo will be totally responsible for cost of all medical treatment of Miss Gift Felix from now till February 10, 2020, when there will be a final check on her.

“That upon the final check of Miss Gift Felix on February 10, 2020, if/and having been certified medically fit, Miss Gift and her family will withdraw the petition against Chief Shedrack Ejinwo.”

Gwamnishu told our correspondent that upon Ejinwo’s arrest, he returned to Delta and assigned Ukagha to follow up on the case and make sure the suspect was charged.

The activist said, “He (Ukagha) called me two days ago and said the people wanted to settle the matter. I said, ‘No settlement, please. Take this suspect to court. I will foot the medical bills of the girl.’ We got a place for the girl through the Doctors without Borders in Port Harcourt.

“I was surprised to see the agreement signed by the person I told to monitor the process and make sure the suspect is charged to court.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nnamdi Omoni, did not respond to calls or a text message.

CrimeFlood Destroys 300 Houses In Buhari’s Hometown by GistMore4(op): 7:00pm On Aug 28, 2019
Flood has destroyed more than 300 houses in Daura and environs in Katsina State, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports.

A NAN correspondent, who visited the town, reports that some of the houses have been totally brought down while water had submerged several others.

NAN found that some residents had since fled the submerged houses while some were seeing trying to rescue some domestic items.

Some Daura residents, who spoke with NAN, said that the flood followed several days of rainfall with the mass of still water bringing down some houses on Wednesday.

A source blamed the incessant flood on the lack of drainage system in Daura, and urged the local, state and federal governments to “do something urgently to check the trend”.

Abba Mato, the Acting Chairman of Daura Local Government Area, who spoke on the flood disaster, described this year’s destruction as “one of the worst ever witnessed in the area”.

He listed areas worst hit to include Kusugu, Sabongari, Sarkin Yara and Mazoji areas of Daura metropolis.

“The floods followed rain showers that lasted for about 24 hours, beginning from Tuesday night to Wednesday,” he told NAN.

Mr Mato said the floods had affected houses, shops and farmlands, adding, however, that most of the affected buildings were erected on flood-prone areas.

Meanwhile, some of the families that were displaced by the floods have appealed to the Federal Government and the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency to assist them so as to minimise the effect of the disaster on their families.

They also appealed to the Katsina State Government to construct drainage in areas that were prone to flooding.

CrimeNigerian Police Arrests 57 Men For Homosexuality In Lagos (Photos) by GistMore4(op): 11:34am On Aug 27, 2019
The Nigerian police have been accused of having cold feet in prosecuting the 57 men they arrested in Egbeda area of Lagos, over an alleged homosexuality.

Oludare Falana, the lawyer representing the men accused of engaging in homsexuality alleged that the case is yet to proceed because the police is yet to file their proof of evidence before the court.

“If you’re going to charge people to court, you must give us the proof of evidence,” Mr Falana said at press conference on Monday August 26.

“The proof of evidence is everything you were able to gather together during your investigation which informed your decision to charge them to court.

“From my understanding and my interaction with some of these boys, they were in a party, so how do you prove to the whole world that they were engaged in same-sex? We have 57 boys, who is having sex with the other? How were they doing it?

“It’s been exactly one year that these boys have been arrested and detained, and I can tell you, as at the last time we were in court, not a single charge has been preferred against them.

“I was in court personally myself on the last adjourned date and I tried to move the magistrate to strike out the case because as far as I’m concerned, there is no case before the court because there is no charge. But in her wisdom, she said no, that she is going to adjourn.

“Counsel to the police mentioned that they are trying to put heads together and charge them before a federal high court, that it was a federal offence.”

Admitting that he is aware of Nigeria's anti-gay law which criminalises same-sex relationships and also has a conviction of up to 14 years in prison, Falana maintained that it is subservient to the Nigerian Constitution. Premium Times reported that he also lashed out at the Police for parading the young men before the media and then stalling their trial in court.

“The question here is this, if the Constitution has guaranteed their freedom of association, freedom to assemble together, that fundamentally-guaranteed freedom cannot be taken away at the whims and caprice of anybody including the state.

“Anybody can gather, that is what the Constitution says, the Constitution never mentioned that boys must not stay together or girls must not assemble" he said.

“These boys have been shown to the whole world as homosexuals, as criminals. At the end of the day, if the state cannot prefer a charge against them in one year, it tells a lot about whatever is wrong with their investigation.

“Secondly, how are you going to make up for this stigmatisation? Are you going to take them back on air and say we are sorry these boys are not whom we thought they are? How do you ameliorate their pains in terms of re-creating the wrong impression you have given the whole world?” he added.

Also lamenting over the demonization of the young men by friends and family after being arrested over homosexuality by the Police, Xeenarh Mohammed, the executive director of The Initiative for Equal Rights stated that the men have not had the chance to clear their names thereafter.

“The reason we are here today is because of the miscarriage of justice that has been done here in Lagos State both by the police and the entire legal system,” said Ms Mohammed.

“Today is exactly a year since the people at a birthday party were arrested, detained for days, maltreated and they’ve still not seen justice. They’ve been branded as criminals, displayed to the rest of the world and they have not had a chance to clear their names.”

Recall we reported that upon being arrested on August 26, 2018, Lagos state's former commissioner of police Imohimi Edgal accused the "suspects" of performing gay initiation rites for newly recruited members. However when arraigned before a Yaba chief magistrate court on three counts of conspiracy, belonging to a secret cult, and unlawful gathering the men claimed they were attending a birthday party.

CrimeMan Accuses Father-in-law Of Kidnapping His Children (photos) by GistMore4(op): 7:31am On Aug 27, 2019
A retired naval Captain, Diamond Onoberhie, has accused his father-in-law, Rear Admiral John Kpokpogri, of kidnapping his four children and relocating them to Canada, where they live with their mother, Ms Rena Kpokpogri.

The four children are Demien, Erhuvwu, Whitney (17) and Dominic Onoberhie (12).

Diamond said upon the dissolution of his marriage to Rena, the children were shared between them.

He added that he was surprised that his father-in-law was still interested in having custody of the only child with him, Dominic.

In a petition by Diamond to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, he alleged that Kpokpogri did this to portray him as a childless man, adding that the admiral had also been threatening his life.

According to him, Kpokpogri took all the major and conflicting decisions to truncate his marriage to his daughter in line with his alleged promise to render him useless.

He said, “All these happened because I disagreed with his family about leading my life the way I was brought up in the Christian way. They wanted us to live fake lives. Often times, my mother-in-law was on my neck to live my life like her husband’s. Each time she said this, I always objected to it, asking her to allow me lead my own life.

“It was along the line that I got to know that they lead a pretentious lifestyle, which is contrary to the way I was brought up with a core value of the Christian faith; it is not at this age that I should change that.”

He added that two persons, Eliagu Abel, 25, and Emmanuel Dibia, 48, had been arraigned before the Magistrates’ Court, Yaba, Lagos, for aiding in the kidnap of Dominic.

The retired naval captain said Dibia, a lawyer, was instructed by Rena to abduct Dominic, while Abel was a gateman in Diamond’s residence.

The suspects, who were arraigned on three counts bordering on conspiracy to kidnap, total disregard for court order and unlawful possession of Dominic, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

It was alleged that Dibia employed the services of Abel to get Dominic from his father’s residence and took him to his mother in Abuja.

It was gathered that an Ogun State High Court, presided over by Justice A. A. Bakre, in May 2018, granted Diamond the custody of Dominic.

The prosecutor, G. A. Okhliku, said the defendants conspired among themselves to commit the offences and disobeyed an order of the court.

He stated that their conduct was likely to cause the breach of peace contrary to Section 412 of the Criminal Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2015.

According to him, Stella Maris Schools Limited, which Dominic attended, through its lawyer, asked Diamond to withdraw his son from the school owing to the frequent troubles Rena was allegedly fomenting.

The school’s letter to Diamond, which was made available to our correspondent, read in part, “While it is not in our client’s nature to dabble in the matrimonial issues of the parents of our pupils, our attention was drawn to the matrimonial issue between you and your ex-wife resulting in a petition for the dissolution of the marriage with your ex-wife.

“The High Court of Justice sitting in Ogun State granted an order for the dissolution of your marriage; the judge stated thus: ‘I have no problem in holding that the petitioner shall continue to have custody of the third child of the marriage.

“This third child is Whitney Onoberhie, while the respondent also shall continue to have the custody of the fourth child, Dominic Onoberhie, who is presently with him, until both are of age and they can decide for themselves.

“Despite the order of the honourable court, your ex-wife had incessantly fomented uncivilised acts both on the premises of our client and also with our client’s staff.

“While the order of the court only allowed access to Dominic Onoberhie during vacations and public holidays, your ex-wife has consecutively during two visiting days barged in on the school premises, disrupted the school’s activities and demanded to see Master Dominic Onoberhie, causing untold pandemonium on the school’s premises.

“In the light of the above, we wish to advise that you withdraw your child from the school as the actions of Ms Ovi Rena are unacceptable to our client and pose immense threat to the welfare, peace and general safety of the staff and students of our client.”

When contacted, Kpokpogri told our correspondent that he was in the United States of America for his annual vacation alongside his wife.

Kpokpogri, who described Diamond as an ingrate, asked, “How can I, an admiral and his father-in-law kidnap his children? Is it not funny?

“I gave him my daughter to marry and later turned around to kidnap the children. Is it not funny? It is difficult to imagine the scenario.”

He asked Diamond to go to court if he was sure that he kidnapped his children.

Kpokpogri said, “I’m really embarrassed. What he is saying now amounts to defamation of character and false information. He knows that he cannot go to court and that is why he is trying to rubbish himself. He served as a captain in the Nigerian Navy. So, nothing like that happened.

“Their marriage was dissolved by the court and the children were shared between them. The children all decided right from the court premises to be with their mother, none wanted to go with him. So, how do I come in there?

“The first two children are university graduates, who have done their youth service; and by the constitution, they have the right to decide who they want to live with. The court gave the custody of the other two children to him, but, the two children said they were not going to live with their father but with their mother and they went with their mother."

He noted that Diamond wanted to embarrass him, adding that he would come up with a detailed response on the matter so that the world would know the facts of the case.

CrimeHerdsmen Rape, Kill Woman In Enugu by GistMore4(op): 5:09am On Aug 23, 2019
The sleepy Ndiuno community of Nchatacha in Enugu East Council of Enugu State was yesterday thrown into mourning as the lifeless body of a 67-year old woman, Mrs. Regina Mba reportedly abducted from her farmland on Wednesday, was found in a nearby bush.

Villagers said several machete cuts were found on the lifeless body of the woman suggesting that she must have been raped and killed by her abductors.

One of the daughters of the deceased, Amuche Aneke, who spoke amid tears, said that her mother had gone to the farm on Wednesday but she did not return in the evening hours like she usually did.

‘’A search team was constituted immediately and when they got to her farm that Wednesday evening, she was not found’’.

The body of the deceased was however found yesterday morning after an expanded search and it was discovered that she was raped and killed.

Angered by the gruesome murder of Mba, Youths from the community protested along the Enugu-Abakaliki highway, carrying the body of the deceased, burning tyres and preventing vehicular movement in the process.

The protest attracted a large number of security personnel, including the army, police, and Nigerian Air Force, who immediately embarked on air surveillance until the crowd was dispersed and movement resumed.

The deputy governor of the state, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo who visited the family of the deceased on receipt of the information, promised that efforts will be made to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book.

When asked whom he thought the suspects were, President General of Nchatancha-Nike community, Mr. Kingsley Anike said “It is obvious that they are Fulani herdsmen’’.

“She is an old woman and it could not have been any other person that can perpetuate that type of act from the same community. So, we are sure it is the Fulani and that is the obvious fact there’’.

When contacted the Enugu State Police Command, through its spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu said the police received report of the sad incidence and that the Commissioner of Police, Suleiman Balarabe has given directive for full investigation into the murder.

‘’The command advises members of the public to continue to be law abiding and avoid any thing that will truncate the existing peace and security in the state as security operatives will leave no stone unturned towards unmasking those behind the dastardly act’’ he said.

Amaraizu said the corpse of the deceased woman has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary of the Annunciation Hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Government has condemned in its entirely the murder and charged security agencies to commence a full-scale investigation into the unfortunate incident.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simon Ortuanaya, while condoling with the family of the deceased assured that those behind the act would soon be fished out and prosecuted.
