The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,has arrested the duo of Garba Iliyasu and Umar Iliyasu who are alleged to be running a Ponzi Scheme in Kano under the name, MGB Global Market.

Their arrest was sequel to intelligence that the organisation had lured many citizens to 'invest' in the bogus scheme using irresistible promise of return on investment of up to 50 percent in two weeks as bait.

Upon receipt of the intelligence, the Commission stormed the office of MGB Global located at Sabo Bakin Zuwo Road, Opposite ConOil, Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State and arrested Garba Iliyasu and Umar Iliyasu alongside 16 other employees of the outfit. The employees were subsequently released.

During the operation, laptops, desktops, POS machines, Tokens and other documents were recovered.

Investigation revealed that one Mohammed Garba Iliyasu who is now on the run is the Managing Director of the Company. Two of his brothers, Abubakar Garba Iliyasu and Ibrahim Garba Iliyasu who are also part of the scheme, are equally on the run.

On September 5, 2019, operatives of the Commission executed a search on the family house of the suspects in Hotoro Area of Kano State and made startling discovery of prohibited firearms, live ammunition and several other incriminating documents. .

One of the suspects is allegedly building a 6-bedroom duplex at the same Hotoro with funds which are believed to be proceeds of the Ponzi Scheme.

The Commission once again, warn the general public to desist from patronizing get rich schemes like MGB Global.

A sixty-year-old man, Charles Jide-Oni, who claimed to be a professor and lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, was arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos State for allegedly obtaining money under false pretence and engaging in advance fee fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, arraigned the ‘Professor’ and 12 other internet fraud suspects before Justice Nicholas Oweibo, the Federal High Court vacation judge for the Southwest zone, on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.

Jide-Oni’s arraignment was sequel to the EFCC’s damning findings about the activities of an illegal financial outfit he floated through which he allegedly swindled his victims of several millions of naira.

Some of the victims had earlier written a petition to the Commission which led to the investigations that indicted him in the alleged fraudulent act.

Among other 12 suspects equally arraigned are Olaleye Kolapo, Madukife Ifeanyi Azuka, Fatanmi Yinka Sunday, Adebayo Bolaji Adeyinka, Adeleke Peter and Adebowale Fadairo.

Others are Oyewunmi Toulope Michael, Bello Ayoade Jalal Arikalam, Owolabi Toheeb Toluope, Abdullahi Abdulazeez Oluwatobi, Temitope Fatolu and Adesina Adewale.

Fatolu (aka Gold Crumb), however, opted for a plea bargain and pleaded guilty to a one-count amended charge of fraudulent impersonation when he was presented before the court on Wednesday.

He was subsequently sentenced to one year imprisonment with effect from June 20, 2019 when he was arrested.

'Gold Crumb' was also to restitue the sum of $500 (Five Hundred United States Dollars), through the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to his victim, and to equally forfeit his iPhone 6, Nokia 103 and Hp Laptop to the Federal government of Nigeria, being part of the benefit he derived from his fraudulent act.

A suspected rapist in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria, still got a bitter pill from the law, despite dolling out ‘settlement’ cash to the victim’s father. He has been remanded in the prison for rape.

In a bizarre case that left Nigerians in shock last week, Rufus Felix opted for cash compensation from Shedrack Ejinwa, who allegedly raped his 14-year-old daughter in a hospital in Port Harcourt.

Mr Felix said he preferred the cash to a police investigation and a possible jail term for Mr Ejinwa.

Mr Felix and the suspect, Mr Ejinwa, including witnesses, signed a document with ‘settlement terms’ which include the suspect paying N370,000 as compensation to Mr Felix, and also footing the victim’s medical bills for several months.

The meetings and the signing of the ‘agreement’ were done at the police station, encouraged by police officers overseeing the investigation, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.

“She’s my daughter, I have the right to decide what I want. My decision is also her decision,” Mr Felix told PREMIUM TIMES while defending his decision to receive the cash.

“They are exposing my daughter to the world. I am not happy with people who took the matter to Facebook. This is my daughter, not any other person’s daughter.”

Mr Felix’s daughter was allegedly raped inside a hospital facility, Kendox Medical Services Ltd, in Port Harcourt, by the suspect, Mr Ejinwa, who is said to be a former employee of an oil company.

Mr Ejinwa was a patient in Kendox at the time of the incident, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.

The girl said Mr Ejinwa bought plantain chips from her in a shop near the hospital and asked her to come over to his hospital room for the money.

“I went to his room, knocked at the door, he told me to come in. As I entered the room, he locked the door, pushed me to the bed and raped me,” she told medical officers at Doctors Without Borders who examined her.

Mr Ejinwa was arraigned by the police before a magistrate in Port Harcourt on Friday, according to a court paper seen by PREMIUM TIMES.

The court paper gives Mr Ejinwa’s age as 61, instead of 67 reported in the media.

“That you Shedrack Ejinwa on the 13th of August, 2019 at Kendox Medical Services, Elelenwo, Port Harcourt in the Port Harcourt Magisterial District did have unlawful carnal knowledge of (name withheld by PREMIUM TIMES) ‘F’ aged 14 by inserting your penis into her vagina and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 37 Vol. II Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999,” the charge sheet reads.

A civil society organisation in Nigeria, Behind Bars Initiative, campaigned for Mr Ejinwa’s arrest and eventual prosecution.

Some Nigerians who commented on the rape incident attributed poverty to Mr Felix’s action, while others said he may have been influenced by some corrupt police officers to go for the cash, instead of seeking punishment for the man who allegedly raped his daughter.

Another civil society organisation in Nigeria, Make A Difference Initiative, while reacting to the incident, warned the police against covering paedophiles.

“Paedophilia is a crime against the state. The duty of the police is to investigate and where it has evidence of the commission of that crime, it should be charged to court,” the spokesperson for the organization, Lemmy Ughegbe, had said in a statement.

Mr Felix did not respond to calls and text message from PREMIUM TIMES as at the time of filing this report.

Valuable items were allegedly looted from M&G, Affordable Boutique and other shops inside Shoprite Mall in Surulere, Lagos State, on Tuesday night by some suspected social miscreants.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had initially reported that some youths had staged a protest around Surulere Shoprite Mall, MTN and Multichoice companies.

It was meant to condemn the recent and latest attacks on some Nigerians and their properties by some South Africans in their country.

NAN reports that these companies’ parent companies are owned by South Africans.

NAN could not ascertain the monetary value of items stolen during the raid by the suspected hoodlums as at the time of filing this report.

It was reported that the youth had on Tuesday evening threatened to attack the Shoprite Mall, MTN and Multi -choices offices in the area but they were prevented by the police personnel from Surulere Police Station that was drafted there.

NAN had also reported that the management of some of the companies had closed early for the day when they received information that some hoodlums were planning to attack them.

The shop owners were not available to appeal to the miscreants while they were looting the shops.

A policeman who begged for anonymity told NAN that the looted shops belonged to Nigerians.

NAN, however, observed that the security personnel from the Surulere Police Division tried to quell the irate youths and maintain law and order but this later broke down hours later.

The angry mob capitalised on the handful of security personnel on the ground and broke into the mall to ultimately loot.

However, the security personnel called for reinforcement that dispersed the youth by spraying tear gas into the atmosphere.
