Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi has raised the alarm over plots to fund a smear campaign of calumny and lies against him.

Amaechi, in a statement yesterday, described the plot as “deceitful and misleading”.

The statement, by his media office, reads: “We know that attempts are being made to peddle all sorts of fictitious, misleading and concocted stories, distorted and manipulated documents that would smudge the image and cast aspersions on the character, integrity and high morals of Amaechi, an astute and accomplished public servant.

“The deceitful plot and plan, and executors of the ominously-funded campaign, is to tarnish the towering status and do as much damage as possible to the character and reputation of Amaechi in the hearts, minds and eyes of the public, using both traditional and new media.

“One aspect of the reprehensible conspiracy is to unscrupulously drag the name of Amaechi and a member of his family into the internal affairs and operations of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in a manner that is designed and intended to bring disrepute and opprobrium to his character and reputation. There are other aspects and dimensions to the plot to rubbish Amaechi’s image.

“In respect to the NDDC, the defamation campaigners intend to create, make and push to the public space all sorts of speculative and baseless allegations against Amaechi; from the ridiculous, to the puerile and completely bizarre stories, backed with distorted, phony and fake documents. For clarity, we state emphatically, that Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is not involved in any way, in the management and operations of the NDDC.”

Amaechi said he decided to alert the public of the hawking presence and devious plots of the operation destroy Amaechi campaigners.

The former governor notified and pleaded with traditional and social media practitioners to be wary of the insidious shenanigans of the purveyors of fake news that was solely intended to deceive the public and destroy his sterling record of many years of meritorious public service.

Osogbo The leadership of the Oodua Peoples Congress in Osun State, on Wednesday, narrated how its men in Ikire, headquarters of the Irewole Local Government Area of the state, smashed a gang of four robbers terrorising residents of the town and commuters on the Ile-Ife-Ibadan Expressway.

According to the OPC, the suspected robbers were arrested behind the Ikire High Court, off the expressway, after they had allegedly robbed some residents of the area. Speaking to our correspondent on the incident, the state Coordinator of the OPC, Adedeji Aladesawe, explained that a member of the group in Ikire, Akinlade Oke, led the operation that culminated in the arrest of three members of the gang and a cleric said to be providing spiritual support for the gang.

Aladesawe said one of the suspected robbers was arrested while trying to escape from the scene of a robbery, adding that he later led members of the OPC to their hideout. Giving details of how the feat was achieved, the OPC member, who effected the arrest of the first suspect, Oke, said he received a distress call from one of his neighbours, Toyin Ilori, around 2am on Monday.

He stated, “I received a call from a neighbour, whose house was attacked. Our area is situated at the back of the Ikire High Court. Before those robbers got to her house, they had attacked two other houses. They were armed with guns, cutlasses and charms. I pleaded with one of my elder brothers, who was at home, to join me. We immediately proceeded to the scene.

“Two members of the gang had gained entrance into Ilori’s house, while one of them was outside monitoring the area. Immediately the one outside saw us approaching, he alerted the others and they took to their heels. “We chased after them and I was able to apprehend one of them. We both fell into a ditch but I held on to him. I tied him up and interrogated him.

He told me where the other members were hiding. At that point, some members of the vigilante group in Ikire had arrived and they joined me. Together, we went to the house where the other gang members were hiding. “Two of them hid in the ceiling but their spiritualist could not run, because one of his leg is bad.

We arrested all of them and handed them over to the police. They were moved to the Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo on Tuesday.”

Fresh reports now indicate that the man who was picked up by a helicopter in the middle of a huge traffic jam along the Benin-Ore road was someone who had suffered a stroke.

Contrary to earlier reports that the helicopter had landed on the highway to pick up a billionaire who had been stuck in a four-hour long traffic jam, the helicopter operator says it is normal to respond to emergency calls.

Femi Adeniji from Tropical Arctic Logistics told the BBC that he didn't understand why the video had caused such a fuss. He said it was normal for their company to respond to emergency situations, as there is no such public emergency service available - and they had done so six times in the last two months.

According to him, there was no truth in the speculation that the helicopter was called by a billionaire who wanted to escape the huge traffic jam. Instead he said that the man had been suffering from high blood pressure and his driver had panicked. A doctor who was also stuck in the traffic was helping the man and the helicopter was called.

A man stabbed to death in north London, on Tuesday, has been named as Nigerian father-of-two, David Bello-Monerville.

Six years ago, his brother, Joseph, was shot in the head in a car, in 1994, another of his siblings, Trevor, 26, died after being stabbed in Hackney.

David, 38, was stabbed to death when two groups attacked each other with blades, chains and broom handles during a street battle close to his family home in Barnet.

His mother Linda Burke-Monerville rushed to the scene sobbing and shouting: “Not another son!”, according to neighbours. .

Six years ago, David was in a car with his 19-year-old twin brothers Joseph and Jonathan Burke-Monerville when a gunman fired three times. None of the brothers’ killers have so far been brought to justice.

The set of twins had returned to Britain just six months before the murder, to start a degree in forensic science at London Metropolitan University. They had gone to Nigeria to study because of their parents’ fears over youth violence in north London.

Joseph and Jonathan were the youngest of seven children – Joseph was the last born. Superintendent Tim Alexander said: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this very difficult time. This is such a tragic loss of life and we urge anyone with information to come forward.

Oladapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’banj, or more fondly – Kokomaster – is largely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most talented entertainers owing to his energy and eye-catching outfits.

Since popping onto the big scene in the early 2000s, the Ogun State-born musician has not looked back, reinventing his craft all the time to meet the demands of present reality.

Speaking with Saturday Beats earlier in the week, the 39-year-old gave insights into some of the things he does to stay relevant in the industry and keep his respect intact.

He said, “In trying to stay relevant in the industry, I try to understand what I am doing.

“It is like footballers, when you see them; they may look like regular people in the club but when they are in their jerseys on the field, it is a different thing.

“I have been able to understand that entertaining people is a part of me; when I wear my costume as D’banj, I get to entertain people.

“I surely have my privacy and if you check it properly and even in the last one decade; even though I am out there; I keep my private life private.

“In a weird way, if you know how to strike a balance and God blesses you with the right wife like mine that can understand, it is easy.”

The entertainer, who has also joined the list of celebrities to have an active YouTube channel, maintained that he has been able to stay relevant due to his ability to keep in touch with his roots.

He continued, “I have managed to stay relevant in the music industry by being true to myself and original.

“I always touch base with my foundation; I try to understand my calling and it has helped me a lot. It has been an interesting ride.”

Speaking on his new YouTube platform, D’banj said, “My YouTube channel is about my adventures as Kokomaster; that is why the first season is called ‘Tag Along’; an acronym for the avant-garde. It means breaking barriers.

“One major thing that has affected us as Africans is that we’ve not documented our stories properly and it has not helped to inspire the new generation.

“Growing up, we could see what Michael Jackson was doing; so we could imagine and hope to be like that.

“I have documented mine and it is going to be about my life. I will be answering questions that people have wanted to know over the years.

“I would also use that to answer my own questions; for example, some people don’t know what Afrobeat is; they think a song like ‘Oliver Twist’ is called Afrobeat, but I’ll call it Afro-pop.

“I want to answer all these questions. It is a whole new adventure; I would be documenting the good and the not so good.”

Three notorious kidnappers were among 122 suspected criminals paraded at the Bompai Police headquarters for various crimes ranging from armed robbery, car theft, burglary, scamming, drug peddling, theft, conspiracy and banditry.

Addressing Reporters on Friday, Kano state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Iliyasu said the suspected kidnappers were arrested at Falgore Forest.

He explained that the kidnappers waylaid newly married couple on the road and kidnapped bride, and vanished into Falgore Forest.

Upon receiving information, a team of policemen were deployed into the Falgore Forest where 20 teenage suspects were apprehended and the woman rescued.

When they were paraded, the victim was able to identify three of them, while 17 others were released.

He said police will soon charge them to court for prosecution.

According to him, “on June 20, 2019, the police in Kano with the help of technical intelligence at their disposal, arrested seven suspects in possession of various types of dangerous weapons and house breaking implements.

“They specialized in armed robbery, extortion, house breaking and theft. They have been terrorizing Sabon Gari area of the state. Suspects confessed to the offence and they will be charged to court after investigation.”

Iliyasu said that during a raid carried out on criminal hideouts within the period, 80 hoodlums popularly known as Y’andaba were arrested, adding that seven suspects were equally arrested in possession of 53 different belts used by police, army and the Immigration service.

Upon investigation, it was discovered that two bags filled with uniform of police, army, and Customs officers were found in their possession.

He said items recovered from them include 14 black berets cap, six jack-knives, eight pistol holders, adding that one suspect was arrested in possession of a pump action rifle and 15 rounds of live cartridges.

Other items recovered from the suspected criminals include 115 live ammunition of 7.62x39mm of AK47 rifle, 53 bags of powder suspected to be cocaine, nine cartons of expired Bio-Vein injection used for insemination and hallucination.

Other items include 43 knives, 10 handsets, one laptop computer, three stolen vehicles, 58 clubs, 20 dangerous weapons and breaking implements and large quantity of laptops.

Iliyasu said in line with the Inspector-General of police mission on Puff Adder operation, the Kano Police Command will continue the raid throughout the state until all criminal-minded persons will either repent, relocate and leave the state completely or are arrested and brought before the law.

Akinde Abdul Moyosore, a 100-level Biochemistry student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, has died after he slumped during an exercise at the school’s sports complex.

The student slumped while jogging at the weekend and died while being rushed to the health centre.
