Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have allegedly killed an Ogun-based transporter, Agbomofuegbe Odion, while hunting for suspected kidnappers in Ijebu-Ode area of the State.

The father of three was returning from a trip to Benin, Edo State, where he had delivered a consignment of frozen turkey when the tragic incident occurred on Thursday.


He was returning in company with his partners when they were intercepted by some vigilance men at Ijebu Ode end of the Benin- Ore highway.

According to witnesses, the vigilance men were carrying out a stop and search on vehicles on the road after some pastors of the Redeemed Christina Church of God (RCCG) were abducted by suspected kidnappers.

It was while the search for the victims was ongoing that the late Odion’s vehicle ran into some local vigilance men who allegedly manhandled him and others in the vehicle.

Witnesses said Odion was shot by policemen who rushed to the scene while the late transporter was fleeing.

A witness said: ‘’ We were returning from Benin, when on getting to a place immediately after J4 axis of the Benin-Ore highway the vigilance men who were in mufti stopped us and order us out of the vehicle.

‘’They were armed with cutlass and jarred bottles. They started manhandling us unjustly. They beat us mercilessly even when we asked them to tell us what we had done. It was when the brutality became unbearable that Odion fled and the next thing I heard were gunshots from SARS operatives, which killed Odion on the spot.

‘’One of the policemen ordered another officer to shoot our legs and I shouted that we only used our vehicle to convey frozen turkey to Benin.When the the Divisional Police Officer of Ogbere Division visited the scene of the incident,I described to him two of the officers attached to the squad that fired the shots that killed Odion.

‘’The DPO later asked that Odion’s body be taken to the mortuary, while our vehicle was moved to their station. As at the time I was invited to the police station; the DPO and his men were still inside the nearby bush where Odion fell down in a pool of his blood after he was shot by the policemen.’’

However, Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) on Friday said the late transporter was hit by bullets when policemen engaged suspected kidnappers who abducted five pastors of the Redeemed Christian Church of God(RCCG) along the highway.

‘’ There was a case of abduction of five pastors of RCCG who were coming to Lagos from Abia State. The man was hit by bullets when policemen engaged the kidnappers in a shootout. Even the commissioner of police and operatives are still combing the forest to free those abducted from the kidnappers.’’

Ikorodu residents squared up to some operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) over an alleged illegal arrest in the neighborhood.

The SARS officers were reportedly in the Lagos community to arrest a young man they accused of being a yahoo boy (internet fraudster). They were however stopped and quickly drove out after residents of the area trooped out shouting 'ole' (thief).

The Police appeared to be working to expectations over the menace of cult activities in Lagos following the arrested of 26 cult members causing violence in some areas in the State.

Source reports that following the violent clash between members of two rival cult groups in Bariga and Oworonshoki areas on 21st July, 2019, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Zubairu Muazu, ordered the immediate deployment of operatives of ‘Operation Crush’ to the two communities to restore peace in the areas.
It was learnt that the Police boss gave mandate to the officers to identify, isolate and apprehend the leaders and members of the gangs and cult groups disturbing the peace of the area.
The operation paid off; the suspects were raided, arrested and are now in Police custody.

This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who also revealed that assorted weapons were recovered from the suspects as exhibits and kept at the Command.
DSP Elkana said that the success was achieved based on credible intelligence; the 26 suspects were arrested within 5days and assorted weapons were recovered from them in different areas. He said that the suspects will all be charged to Court to face the full weight of the law.

The spokesman expressed the determination of the Police Command to curtail the activities of cultists and said that the onslaught was ongoing until they are totally defeated.

Source investigation revealed that the residents of Bariga and Oworonshoki had not known peace over the activities of the various cult groups terrorising and causing violence, which led to clashes among the groups before the Police moved in and made some arrest while some of their members fled and were said to be at large.

At least five shops and a relaxation joint were demolished by the Oyo State Government officials on Thursday, August 1st 2019.

A filing station was also sealed during the operation. The owners of the affected ventures allegedly violated the environmental law on building regulations as well as the failure to carry out the weekly sanitation exercise.

The filling station, located at Orita Challenge, Ibadan, was sealed for accommodating a filthy drainage lane which environmental officers found out to be exposing residents to varying degrees of environmental hazards.

According to the Director of Engineering and Beautification, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Moshood Adeola, who led the enforcement team during the weekly environmental sanitation exercise at Orita Challenge in Ibadan, the government would not relent in enforcing the best environmental culture among the people for the sake of good living.

“The disobedience of the shop owners to vacate the premises, being a setback for the road, led to this demolition. Despite the abatement notices served on them for more than six months to vacate the premises as the continued existence of the illegal structures constituted an environmental nuisance, they did not yield and we have to come and pull the structures down.

“Their offences range from noise and air pollution, evidence of open defecation, accommodating illicit drug users within the environment; that is why those shops were pulled down.

“Despite the effort of Oyo State Government in maintaining a suitable and sustainable environment for all and sundry, some people still went ahead in engaging in street trading and non-adherence to environmental laws.

“It is on record that this administration has restated that it will not renounce its stance of zero tolerance on environmental disorderliness.”

The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Elder Simon Achuba, has cried out his life is under threat.

In an interview with pressmen on Thursday at his official residence in Lokoja, the embattled deputy governor alleged Governor Yahaya Bello has detailed gunmen to kill him.

He alleged the gunmen, on the instruction of the governor, were out to kill him, adding the plans were no longer a secret.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari and security agencies to save him.

There was also a plate of chicken wings delivered to her.

@mztholu tweeted: "My boyfriend had money and food delivered to me... I'm not crying".

Attached to the package containing money is a note that reads: "If you're going to eat my money, then at least use a plate."

A Nigerian man, identified as Omofuma Christian, has died after slumping, today, in Damansara, Malaysia.

According to reports, he was just taking a walk when he suddenly slumped. He was later confirmed dead by paramedics.

The Gombe Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, July 29, 2019, secured the conviction of a visa fraudster, Malam Lauwali Usman, before Justice Abubakar Jauro, of the Gombe State High Court, on a one count charge bordering on fraud.

Usman was convicted after pleading guilty to the one count charge.

His journey to jail started before the 2019 general elections when he invited some people asking them to submit their international passports for the lesser Hajj to Saudi Arabia.

The purpose for the lesser Hajj, according to him, was to take them to Saudi Arabia to offer prayers in favour of a political party and its candidates on contractual basis. .

Some of his victims, however, submitted their international passports to him while seven of them that have no international passports pay the sum of N23, 000, (Twenty Three Thousand Naira) each to procure one.

The victims explained that after collecting the money, the convict called them few days after and told them that the person conveying their passports to Kano State for visa processing was involved in ghastly motor accident and that all the passports were burnt, adding that they were going to pay another N23, 000 (Twenty Three Thousand Naira), each for the replacement.

Sensing foul play, the petitioners contacted the EFCC and the convict was arrested on January 2019, at Tashan Bauchi area, within the Gombe Metropolitan City. He was arrested at the point of collecting money from one of the victims.

A search warrant executed in the suspect’s house showed all the international passports of the victims and other incriminating items in his possession, which were recovered from him by the EFCC operatives. .

A commercial driver, Taiye Musa, has been arraigned at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly driving in a dangerous manner and causing the death of a one-year-old baby.

Musa, 25, pleaded not guilty to the charge of dangerous driving and manslaughter.

Prosecuting Inspector Ingobo Emby said Musa committed the offence on July 9 at Elf bus stop, on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

He alleged that the defendant drove his commercial bus marked APP 584 XX in a dangerous manner and caused the death of Baby Chimbu Uligwe.

“The deceased’s mother, Mrs. Tochukwu Uligwe, sustained injuries in the accident, as she was carrying her child at the bus stop,” Emby said.

He said the defendant drove without a licence.

Magistrate K. K. Awoyinka granted the defendant N300, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

She said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

One of the sureties, she added, must be a civil servant.

The case continues on August 23.
