The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented a Certificates of Return to the Bayelsa State Governor-Elect, Chief David Lyon.

Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated 44 candidates including the 7 Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Douye Diri, to win a keenly contested election.

The commission also presented a Certificate of Return to a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly representing Brass Constituency 1, Charles Daniel, whose supplementary election was concluded on November 16.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Pastor Monday Udoh, in his welcome address, said the election conducted by INEC was adjudged right in the eyes of the world.

He said the process, which started in May 2019, came with a lot of apprehension following fears of violence hinged on the outcome of previous elections in the state that were marred by violence and killings.

But he noted that through various engagements with stakeholders, civil society groups, alternative dispute mechanism and security agencies, the election was free, fair and credible.

He said despite pockets of skirmishes in some areas, no life was lost in the election.

It was a busy Wednesday for Malaysian Immigration Department officials after they raided and arrested 1,000 Chinese nationals believed to be part of the largest online scam syndicate operating in the country.

Taking to their Facebook account to share the details of the bust, officials say that the group was operating out of an office in the university-slash-tech town of Cyberjaya, just outside of the Malaysian capital.

A press conference on the raid is expected later today, but videos have been widely shared across Facebook over the last 24 hours.

In one clip, an individual appears to be evading police by jumping out of an office block window. (He gets up afterwards, but definitely looks a little worse for wear.)

Another clip taken from a nearby building appears to show scores of people running from the raid, fleeing down the city’s wide streets.

Another video shows an officer grabbing and wrestling back one of the individuals attempting to escape.

Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the incident noting that, the inferno occurred at about 3:50 Am of Saturday.

“Reports from our team in the field observed that over 20 stalls containing different quantities of bags of potash were burned down.

“Potash is one industry that is key in employment and has been supporting households across Gashua and a key business in Yobe State”, SEMA said.

According to the agency, Governor Mai Mala Buni has given it a green light to respond within the shortest possible time and bring succor to the affected individuals.

“We commiserate with the victims of Gashua Fire Disaster.

“SEMA as Directed by His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni, will respond accordingly”, it said.

Gashua is the hometown of the incumbent Senate President Ahmed Lawal and is one of the densely populated local government areas in Yobe state.

Rev. Fr Edmund Nwagbala has lost his life in a fire incident at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Nnewi-Ichi Uruagu, Anambra State.
.
The fire started at the parish house at about 3a.m, today and the Anambra State Fire Service was deployed to the scene. However, the priest had already died before the fire could be put out.
