Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Port Harcourt Zonal Office have arrested five suspected fake Satellite Television Operators.

The suspects: Davidson Onuoha; Emeka Samuel; Eze Francis Sunny Amadi, Terkura Zungwem Verinica and Evangelist Alex Umanah were arrested in a simultaneous raid on their companies on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at three different locations in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Their arrest followed several weeks of intense intelligence on the suspects, their residences and operations by operatives of the EFCC.

The suspects were allegedly rebroadcasting content of the Digital Satellite Television( DSTV) illegally in their companies. The companies are CANTV at Aba Road, Port Harcourt, METROTV at Rivers State Television Complex, Eagle Avenue, Iriebe, Port Harcourt and Cable Trends Limited( CTL) at Eleme Junction, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Items recovered from the suspects include GOTV Decoders; Star times Decoders; DSTV Decoder; Free to Air Decoder (Strong), Consat Decoder and One Direct Decoder. Others are Encoder, Switches, Central Processing Units( CPU) and Monitors.

The suspects would be charged to court when investigations are concluded. Port Harcourt's Zonal Head of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa cautions the general public to be wary of the operations of illegal Satellite Operators stressing that there are rising cases of such activities across the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said he was shocked by the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. The President on Wednesday embarked on a three-day state visit to South Africa to engage President Cyril Ramaphosa regarding steps to resolve the crisis and other bilateral talks that would cement the relationship between the two countries. Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President Garba Shehu, in a statement said Buhari: “The President was shocked at the outbreak of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

He said: “The recent acts of xenophobic attacks on our compatriots and other Africans in South Africa are shocking to me, Nigerians and indeed Africa. “It was an embarrassment to the continent. Let me again use this medium to condole with the families of all those who lost their lives over the years in such tragic incidents.

May their souls rest in peace,’’ he added. President Buhari also commiserated with those who were injured, praying for their quick recovery, and sympathised with those who lost properties and other valuables. “As a government, we are quite disturbed by these very unfortunate events and have taken actions and measures to address this issue and prevent their reccurrence with the South African government.

“I had earlier directed the evacuation of Nigerians who do not feel safe to remain here. Over 500 have returned home and are being reintegrated into their communities. “At this juncture, I wish to express my profound gratitude to Chief Allen Onyeama, the Chairman of Air Peace Airlines, who showed compassion and patriotism by immediately offering to evacuate our Nigerian brothers and sisters who had been affected by these xenophobic attacks,” he said.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), says it has seized no fewer than 1,072 vehicles from suspected smugglers since the closure of Nigerian borders with neighbouring countries.

NCS Public Relations’ Officer, Mr Joseph Attah made the disclosure on Friday in Katsina during a sensitisation programme on the Border Drill Operation.

He said that the vehicles were seized while trying to cross into the country through illegal routes.

Attah said that over 19,000 bags of foreign rice and 4,765 jerry cans of petrol were also seized adding that two fuel tankers were also impounded.

The PRO revealed that thousands of ammunition were seized, while 317 suspects were arrested during the period.

He said that 131 bags of NPK fertilisers, which would have been used to make explosive device were seized, while 146 illegal immigrants without genuine travel documents were arrested.

He pointed out that the closure had helped in ensuring security for the citizens as well as improved the nation’s economy.

“Anytime you buy foreign rice, you have empowered foreign farmers, while our farmers are suffering in spite of government interventions like Anchor Borrower, which is aimed at boosting rice production.

“We are now like candles burning ourselves and lightening others,”he said.

He, however, justified why the government launched the ongoing Border Drill Operation to check the menace of smuggling and illegal immigrants into the country.

In his remarks, the State Coordinator, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Alhaji Armayau Rimaye, said that the country has potentials for self sufficiency in food production.

He said that such could only be achieved if Nigerians continue to support government policies like the Border Drill Operation

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian people on the celebration of the country’s 59th independence anniversary

The Ambassador of Venezuela to Nigeria, David Caraballo, stated this in a statement in Abuja.

According to him, Maduro congratulated the President and the people of Nigeria on all the achievements recorded by the country in the last 59 years.

The Venezuelan President commended the government in its fight against terrorism and the Nigerian people for their resilience.

He also praised the Nigerian government, labour movements and solidarity groups for their support to Venezuela in the solidarity protest against Trump’s illegal economic blockade on Venezuela.

He said Nigeria and Venezuela share great historical relationships which would be built on for stronger bilateral ties.

Sequel to breaking one of the house rules regarding violence on Friday, 27 September, Tacha, a Big Brother Naija housemate, was Friday night, disqualified from the show, while Mercy, a fellow housemate on whom the violence was perpetrated, received a double strike for provocation.

During their altercation earlier in the day, Big Brother had invited both housemates to the Diary Room, where he cautioned them.

However, in spite of his caution, the duo continued to exhibit violent behaviour, with Tacha acting out violently against Mercy, while Mercy visibly restrained herself and was also prevented from being physically violent.

A statement from the show organisers said MultiChoice and the show producers, are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all housemates in the Big Brother house at all times.

“We view incidents such as occurred with Tacha and Mercy in a very serious light and will continue to take necessary action against housemates who break the strict rules of Big Brother,” part of the statement reads.

Tacha becomes the first housemate to be disqualified from the Big Brother Naija Pepper Dem House.

This year’s edition will run into October 9th when a winner will be announced.

Nigerian billionaire, Femi Otedola has taken up the medical expenses of legendary reggae icon, Majek Fashek who is terribly sick and stranded at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in London.

Otedola's intervention came after Majek Fashek's manager, Uzoma Day Omenka, painted a pathetic picture of the dire situation the musician is in.

Confirming Otedola's magnanimity to LIB, Uzoma Day said, 'we really appreciate him for coming through and taking care of the hospital bills. Its a huge relief and we are grateful. We however still need more support from well meaning Nigerians to take care of other expenses.

According to him, Majek is recuperating and hopefully will be out of danger in no time.
