Phones / 152 Apps Removed From Google Play Store Due To SMS Scam by Gizmomachine: 2:09am On Nov 04, 2021
Google has removed a total of 152 apps from its play store for its involvement in an SMS scam. These 151 scam apps have been downloaded over 10.5 million times in more than 80 different countries. Avast discovered that once the apps are installed on a user's phone, the phone's location, International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), and phone number are checked to discover the area code and language to use. Then it will prompt the user to provide their phone number and sometimes their email address, too. This information is then used to subscribe the user to premium SMS services without them realizing. The charges are typically $40 or more a month and it can take weeks or months for a user to realize.

Once an UltimaSMS app has achieved its goal, it either stops working or offers more subscription options rather than the promised functionality it was downloaded for. The problem is, even if a user uninstalls the app at this point the premium subscriptions will continue to take money from their accounts.

Phones / Mediatek Become Smartphone Biggest Chipset Vendor In Q3 2020 by Gizmomachine: 1:40am On Dec 25, 2020
According to a recent report from Counterpoint, over 100 million smartphones were sold in Q3 2020. Of this, MediaTek got the most share. The report revealed that MediaTek grabs about 31% dethroning Qualcomm to become the biggest Smartphone chipset vendor in Q3 2020. Qualcomm comes second with 29%, while Apple, HiSilicon and Samsung’s share sit at 12% each, with UNISOC getting 4% of the market share.

While MediaTek leads in the number of chipset sold, Qualcomm was the biggest 5G vendor for Q3. According to the report, only 17% of the devices sold in Q3 were 5G and Qualcomm leads with about 39% market share.

The company’s growth has been as a result of producing chipset that powers both cheap and mid-range smartphones, which are mainly sold in India, China, Africa and the Middle East. Most devices running on MediaTek chips cost between $100-$250. Another reason for the growth, is the ban on Huawei which also increase the company sells in the Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

We see the introduction of HarmonyOS, Huawei’s own operating system last year. Since the introduction, we have been waiting on the OS will hit its smartphone division. It seems we may be seeing that soon as a report claims that Huawei is currently working on a smartphone which will be unveiled next year.

The rumor came from Richard Yu himself, the company’s CEO. According to him, a smartphone is already running the said, OS and will likely hit the market next year. This will be hitting the market along a number of new devices, including PCs, tablets, smart wearables and other IoT products.

There are reports that the first smartwatch running HarmonyOS is expected to debut at the end of this year. This will be followed by the company’s first phone with the in-house operating system, next year. This is not the first time we have heard rumors like this. Back in December 2019, there was a report of the company’s first smartphone running its own OS hitting the market as early as 2020.

Huawei’s own OS was introduced after the company was blacklisted by the US government during the trader war between the United State and the Chinese government. We have heard and seen a lot of buzz about the OS and we await what features will make it stand out against the likes of Android and iOS.

Phones / Google Search To Inform Users When Results Are Not Great by Gizmomachine: 6:12pm On Apr 25, 2020
If you have ever searched for something online and you get a different result, you know how frustrating it is. You make a search about one thing and done, Google delivers something different, sometimes results that are not even related to your search query. To help in these situations, a new Google update has arrived to change that.

The new update will now inform the user when the results are not great. That is, when it could not find good enough results for the particular search term(s). Google will inform you be displaying a message that reads; “It looks like there aren’t any great matches for your search”. This is to help users quickly know that their search term was not ideal, so that they can choose to not waste any more term surfing the results.

Users can still browse through the search results if they wish to and Google will provide some alternative searches as well as tips on how to better reformulate the query to find the information the user needs. Google is confident that this message won’t show up too often, with their search algorithm being so good. However, when it does happen, they hope it can save the user a bit of time.

Facebook has unveiled a new company logo, after it's launched 15 years. The new logo is part of re-branding to better differentiate the company from its other products and services. This was made known via a blog post shared on the company's Newsroom website. The new logo is designed specifically only for the company. Other services and product own by Facebook, still maintain their logos.

Facebook started as a single app. Now, 15 years later, we offer a suite of products that help people connect to their friends and family, find communities and grow businesses.

Today, we’re updating our company branding to be clearer about the products that come from Facebook. We’re introducing a new company logo and further distinguishing the Facebook company from the Facebook app, which will keep its own branding.

The new branding was designed for clarity, and uses custom typography and capitalization to create visual distinction between the company and app.

The re-brand will become visible across all products that the Facebook company offers, include the Facebook app, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Portal and Calibra. Phones / Harmonyos Will Rival Apple’s Ios In 2 Years Says Huawei CEO - Gizmolad by Gizmomachine: 6:28am On Oct 13, 2019
HarmonyOS or HongMeng as it is called in China has been announced and currently running on the company's Honor Vision TV. The OS, which has been in development since 2012, was announced after the US sanctions imposed on Huawei. While this may not be news, the real news is the comment made by the CEO of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei during an interview with Fortune Magazine.

According to the company's boss, the newly developed HarmonyOS, would be able to compete with top rivals like Apple’s iOS within a period of 2 years. He went further to say;

I think it will take less than two to three years. Since I'm part of the company's leadership, I need to be a bit more conservative when discussing timelines. Otherwise, I may end up putting too much pressure on our staffs.

HarmonyOS has been tested by some smartphone makers and according to claims, is faster than Android OS. The OS, which was designed to run on smart watches and speakers, will also run on smartphones and in vehicles.

Huawei's recent revenue took a dive because the company was unable to use Google’s products in Huawei’s smartphones. It's latest smartphone lineup, the Mate 30 series was launched with Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This means, the smartphones will not be supporting Google Play Service.

Ren Zhengfei revealed his company hopes to continue doing business with Google if the ban was ever lifted. According to him;

We still hope to continue to use Google's operating system, and we remain committed to a friendly cooperation with Google. We need to further improve in terms of software. we're somewhat weak when it comes to big software architecture.

The company seems very confident about its self developed operating system and we hope to see how things play out in the near further.

Phones / Google Ending Adsense Mobile Apps To Focus On Web App by Gizmomachine: 7:24am On Jul 16, 2019
Google AdSense is the most popular and to some, the best advertising platform on the market. The company generates millions annually from advertisting. It also allows publishers share from this revenue by joining the Adsense program and placing ads on their websites or blogs. With this, Adsense provided a way for site admin and website owners to easily check their earnings and other data. This was done by accessing an app created by the advertising platform for publishers. The mobile app is both available on Android and iOS platforms.

Now just like must come and gone apps and service from Google, it seems like the fate for AdSense Mobile Apps will be coming to an end. This is as shared by the company on its official blog. According to Google;

We will be focusing our investment on the AdSense mobile web interface and sunsetting the current iOS and Android apps. By investing in a common web application that supports all platforms, we will be able to deliver AdSense features optimized for mobile much faster than we can today.

What this means, is that AdSense Android and iOS apps will be deprecated in the coming months and will be discontinued and removed from the app stores by the end of 2019. It is unclear as to why Google chose to unpublish the apps altogether, but it was a long time coming. Both apps haven’t been updated since 2017.

AdSense Android and iOS apps allow publisher to easily and quickly check ad pageviews, clicks, impressions and revenue generated from the site. Of late, the apps didn’t let users access a lot of advanced features for account management and ad set up as they were always limited to the desktop version of the console.

Google said that about 70% of audiences consume content on mobile devices. Additionally, a third of site admins, uses AdSense from mobile devices. Google says that they’re ‘continuing to work on the mobile platform’ and that we can expect to see improvements to the AdSense mobile web interface ‘later this year’.

Phones / How Huawei Might Retaliate Against The US Ban With Patent Portfolio by Gizmomachine: 9:11pm On Jun 18, 2019
Huawei seems to be the major target in the trade war between the U.S. and China. The company was recently banned by the Trump lead government from doing business with companies in the US. Despite keeping its head afloat, the ban has resulted in the lost of millions in the part of the Chinese tech giant. From the look of things, the situation isn't showing any sign of improvements. Even with the launch of its 5G network, the US is pressuring its European allies to not use Huawei’s 5G equipment.

If the situation continues, there is a possibility that Huawei could retaliate, with some deadly weapons in its arsenal. If you are wondering how this will be possible, then read on. What most people don't know, is that Huawei owns a vast portfolio of patents on essential technology. According to reports from Anaqua’s AcclaimIP, Huawei owns 56,492 active patents on telecommunications, networking, and other inventions. In the year 2018, the company apparently received 1,680 US patents and its total collection of active patents and published applications stand at 102,911.

With the huge number of patents at its disposal, the company might decide to retaliate by putting its patents to good use. Whether or not the US or any country decides to use Huawei’s infrastructure, there are pretty high chances that they will still be using one of the technologies that Huawei has a patent on.

Huawei is currently in protracted licensing talks with phone-services provider Verizon Communications and is in a dispute with chip maker Qualcomm over the value of patents. The company has also lodged claims against Harris Corp. After the defense contractor sued it last year alleging infringement of patents for networking and cloud security.

Huawei is reportedly asking for over $1 billion in patent licensing fees for using around 320 of its networking equipment patents, even though Verizon isn’t directly using Huawei’s equipment. Verizon is the biggest smartphone carrier in the U.S. and the first telecom company in the country to roll out 5G networks. According to McGregor, “Huawei can say ‘whether you’re using our equipment or Ericsson’s equipment, you’re using our inventions and for that, you still have to take a license.’' Huawei could dash the US a big blow by deciding to charge US companies more money for the right to use its inventions.

Phones / Huawei Requesting Developers To Publish Apps On Its App Store by Gizmomachine: 11:56am On Jun 11, 2019
Huawei has been working on its own OS called Oak OS which is expected to be launched in September this year. The world’s second largest smartphone maker was focused into developing its own OS, after the Trump lead administrator banned US-based companies from doing business with the tech giant. Huawei has depended on Google’s Android operating system to power its smartphones. With the ban in place, this means the company will have to come up with a new solution, since it will no longer be having access to the Play Store for apps.

With the Oak OS soon to launch, report says Huawei now requesting developers to publish apps on its app store. The idea is to ensure that its devices have access to a flourishing app ecosystem. The company has reportedly reached out to developers of popular Play Store applications to get them to publish their apps on EMUI‘s pre-installed AppGallery app store.

This information was made known by an XDA-Developers, who shared an email sent to him by Huawei. The email invites developers to join AppGallery which is claimed to have “270 million monthly active users” on over “350m phones,” about half of which are sold outside of China.

The email promises that developers will be provided with “full support” to help them publish their app on AppGallery. However, the company has clarified exactly what kind of support will be provided to developers.

As per the reports, the Chinese company has been pitching app makers from last year to build software for a new Huawei app store outside China. The company had even talked with European wireless carriers about spreading this new app store even further.
