After the statement from Buhari on Al
jazeera that he won’t tolerate the biafrian
movement in Nigeria, calling the ipob
demonstration a joke, well that has
stirred more aggravations in ipob camp.
The Organisation of Emerging African
States (OEAS) has planned the biggest
international conference to discuss the
way forward on the ongoing agitations for
an independent Biafra State tagged the
All-Biafran Conference (ABC), the
organizers said that all pro- Biafra groups
will be invited to the confab.
In a letter to the Indigenous Peoples of
Biafra (IPOB), the OEAS said that the All-
Biafra Conference 2016 would be held
soon at a location it will provide.
The organization said that the failure to
unite is promoting and supporting the lie
and calumny of tribalism in the struggle
for the Biafra State.
The group called for the creation and
implementation of a Biafra United Front
(BUF) to use necessary means to achieve
the desired goals. The group made the call
after accusing the Federal Government of
Nigeria of total neglect of its demands on
the issue of Biafra.
The OEAS’ letter was endorsed by Dr.
Ebenezer Derek Mbongo Akwanga Jnr, the
group’s Secretary General and Jonathan
Levy, Solicitor, Chief Administrative
Officer of OEAS.
They accused the Federal Government of
neglecting its initial demand to among
other things; release from jail the leaders
and supporters of pro-Biafra movements
like the Biafra Zionist Movement, the
Movement for the Actualisation of the
Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and
the IPOB.
The group said that it asked the
government to order the military and
police forces to stand down and return to
their barracks and to organise a snap
referendum on Biafran self-
determination to be held within 90 days.
The African group lamented that Nigeria
not only ignored these demands, but
arrested more pro-Biafran agitators using
the military to attack unarmed protesters,
adding that “it is regrettable that the
Nigerian government has dismissed the
idea of a referendum on Biafra.”
The African group said: “The OEAS offers
its good offices to put out a call for the
creation of a united front and organizing
meeting of all groups in greater Biafra
land and its environs including the
Annang, Efik, Kalabari, Ibibio, Idoma,
Igala, Igbo, Ijaw, Itsekiri, Ogoni and
Urhobo communities.
“All involved groups and organisations
must put aside their internal differences,
personality issues, tribal and regional
differences to achieve the desired goal,”
the group said.

Mosquitoes carrying Zika virus exist in
Nigeria —Health Minister

THE Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac
Adewole, has said that the mosquitoes
carrying Zika virus are in Nigeria and
urged Nigerians to protect themselves by
using mosquito nets. He also called on Nigerians to remain calm, be vigilant and report any suspected case of an acute febrile illness in pregnant
women, in particular, to any nearest
health facility. Adewole made this disclosure at a press
briefing, yesterday, in Abuja, where he
explained that the mosquitoes were
active and flying, adding that they bite
during the day and early morning.
He said: “Nigerian scientists working in
Western Nigeria in 1954 discovered Zika
virus in Nigeria. Further studies in the
years 1975 to 1979 showed that 40 per
cent of Nigeria adults and 25 per cent of
Nigerian children have antibodies to Zika
virus, meaning they are protected against this virus.

“Despite the fact that some Nigerians are
immune to the Zika virus infection as
demonstrated by previous studies, it is
important and advisable that Nigerians
should be careful and protect themselves from mosquito bites.
“There is no vaccine for Zika virus, and no cure other than rest, plenty of fluids and perhaps over-the-counter medication to reduce fevers, aches and pains as previously mentioned. This, therefore, means that prevention is most effective

means of preventing transmission.
“I advise all Nigerians, particularly
pregnant women, to avoid travelling to
countries infected by this virus in these
periods. If however, you are to visit any
country where Zika virus is now being
actively transmitted, you are advised to
protect yourselves from mosquito bites.

“Pregnant women considering travel to
affected areas may wish to consult their
health-care provider prior to travel and
after return. They should also practice
personal and household steps to prevent
mosquito, including putting mosquito
repellant on their clothes and skin, wear
long sleeves and pants, and sleep
underneath mosquito nets at night, where possible.”
