I just want to tell everyone Thankyou for all the advice you have given me. The good and the bad are both appreciated. You taught me a lot and have shown me a variety of different views of Nigeria. A lot of things I were already aware of through my own research on the country , most of which definitely goes on in America, which is why I said some of the things I did in the original post. No worries! I have to thank those who made my post front page. The outpoor of love and open "welcome homes" I've received is something I didn't expect because I didn't think so many people would see this. Makes me proud to see this unity for us over here. A lot of people don't realize the importance of us (Africans in the diaspora) and continental Africans connecting and locking hands. I'll be sure to update this forum as I continue my journey. we'll see how this goes... peace and love to you my naija family #letsbuildeachotherup

Hi, would love to be friends and meet you someday too. I'm a guy though. I've been to the states, enjoyed it, but i observed most of all that you mentioned in your post that made frontpage today:

1. The food: i was like "what is the american food", couldn't point to any. Couldnt eat most of the ones i found except the junks. I could see italian, chinese, vietnamese etc
2. The water: i kept using the bathrooms that i thought something was wrong with my bladder at some point
3. The silent discrimination: when i get on a train or bus, i would observe most of the whites usually avoid sitting with the blacks, someone tried to explain that they wanna give you privacy, but then, you observe them moving to sit together with the whites etc. Its like stereotyping, sometimes you'll feel like "this white guy is looking at me with some suspicion like i'm gonna steal from him or rob him or something"..
4. Weather: its really gets cold out there even in the fall season
5. Anti-social: the first thing i observed the first time i landed the US was "everyone keeping a straight face", everyone looks straight, nobody looks you in the eye, and they're all walking so fast. Sometimes i wanna say hi to someone but then i was afraid i could be charged for evasion of privacy or something..People are just too busy to socialize.
6. Hardwork: Americans keep working till the day they die. everyone lives on mortgage and many do not end up paying it all back, the taxes keep coming and you have to keep working. The work itself is not easy, you dont get to work sitting in the office, you keep working so fast like a robot with only 30 minutes of break, and everyone is doing it, old and young, even 60+ year old people are working like robots, awww! No mercy, you get lazy, you lose your job, or your home.
7. Relationship: You keep a lady waiting on a date? You lose her. You meet a lady today? She could get pregnant for you and care less about a relationship, you're simply asked to pay for child support, no strings. In Nigeria, before most ladies get pregnant for you, they're doing it to make you get married or settle down with them..

Anyway, it was fun, i would go visiting again soon. I love to see and hang out with Nigerians out there. Hope we can get to hang out sometime and get to know each other. I love heart to heart friendships, the kind you enjoy with a mom, knowing you're always welcome no matter how bad it gets, and you can always enjoy the good times together.

I'm so glad you posted this! As a people we lack understanding

Remember Wesley Snipes visited sometime around 2005 and so many others.

You have made a good decision.

Like I said @ the other thread, get acquainted with the country system, get someone to teach you and take you round in case you visit bit be careful with those you trust.

With this you'll do well.

Remember to invest, never forget this; it's very important.

I am a tech expert and I quickly ran a scan on your profile, your Facebook have been searched thousands of times within the last few hours. It's a good thing you switched your profile.

I know you've received lots of advice my dear but trust me, you need more than just that. It's when you think you know better that they end up outsmarting you.

Nigeria is a very good place with good people but just like every country, there are people who try to outsmart others.

I wish you the best when you come but take your time, have a definite plan. Don't be too excited, be ready to start up a business or something that will thrive. You need guidance and there are quite good people who could help. If you ever wanna work or start a business, then Lagos is the place to be as it's arguably the business hub of Africa as a whole and it's a safe place with good people.

If you just wanna leave for sometime and head back and forth, Calabar or Uyo is most peaceful.

For the housing, you already made wrong moves I noticed. First as a foreigner, building is the wrongest of moves, you should acquire or rent one for now. Get your acts together and get the govt backing before you could set out on building.

You have a lot to learn Hamas and I'm not sure I could be best in helping but I can do my bits. I'm not always on nairaland though. But I just mailed you here. You can mail me so we talk on whatsapp. Even as a Nigerian, I am scared of dropping my emails or contacts cos there are lots of wrong peeps out here. But I'd look out for this page if you ever respond so I see if I could be if help.

Ok thanks!

You're welcome. Everything will work itself out as long as you're willing to make that move. Be bold! Trust your instincts and never doubt your heart. Irrespective of your line of work, you will find companies or organization that need your skill set otherwise you can start a business of your own with less capital than you'll probably ever require in the States. If you're fortunate enough, you might land a position with a good company that will provide you a chauffeured company vehicle, with 1 month paid yearly vacation with other perks.

It's hard for the people here to understand when I tell them it's easier to make economic gains in Nigeria in comparison to the U.S where virtually every sector is somewhat saturated. You'd be shocked at the amount of white Americans making millions from Nigeria on the down-low in real estate and other sectors. Even that evil empire (Walmart) realized the huge potentials in Nigeria and are moving rapidly to stake their claims: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2011-08-11/billionaire-wiese-targets-nigeria-with-pepkor-as-he-expands-african-empire

In our experiences since we've been in the country, the positives far outweigh the negatives so we couldn't be happier.
Aside from the occasional stories of armed robberies, Nigeria is relatively peaceful if you move with the right crowd. Gun-violence is pretty much non-existent and the people are generally peaceful and easy going. Obviously, you'd have to be willing to adjust to some irregularities and inconveniences but so it is when migrating somewhere else. We'll be glad to offer any assistance we can to you.

,
Thankyou again very informative. I'm glad to hear from someone who actually lived here and moved there. you let me know both sides. I don't like when people just give you the bad like no share of country has its trouble. Through my own research I found that this would be the best thing for me and my daugter. Everyone has their own life to live. I really appreciate you reaching out to me with kindness and UNDERSTANDING

Glamrock, I specifically signed up on Nairaland after reading your post on "10 reasons why you're moving from America" and I showed your topic to my wife and informed her I would register on this forum just to encourage you. You have a family in us any day sis. You are making the right move sista, you can't go wrong.

A brief history of my background and why I was easily drawn to your posts and why we share similar experiences:

1. Born and raised in Lagos and moved to the U.S at a young age. I left Nigeria in October 1993 and never came back until January 2015! Yup, 21 straight years! I last resided in Florida after having lived in Atlanta and Boston. Coming back to Nigeria was interesting as I saw it through the eyes of a foreigner having been away for so long! I wowed in amazement seeing how developed Nigeria truly is although most of the locals are blind to this reality. They crave glitters while I crave understated beauty and simplicity. They crave excess, while I crave contentment. They praise the AmeriKKKan white man because they have no prolonged first time experience of how evil he is and how he's disagreeable to anyone of African ancestry.

2. I was single when I left for the U.S but came back with a wife and kids who had never ventured outside of America until this past January. They were born and raised in the U.S and attended charter schools but we pulled them for fear of ever rising racial prosecution. We couldn't stand to see our kids before looked upon as 2nd class citizens.

3. I relocated my entire family to Nigeria because it finally dawned on me that AmeriKKKa is the "land of the free AND home of the slaves". I feared for the lives of my kids especially my sons after watching the Ferguson Riots, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, etc. They are exterminating young black men irrespective of how young they are. There is definitely an agenda against teenage boys in AmeriKKKa and this genocide is on the rise daily.

4. I finally saw that Nigeria was not as bad as I thought it were 21 years ago. As the saying goes " the grass looks greener on the other side". Looking around now, I have come to respect my african heritage and have been trying to educate some of these ignorant average Nigerians that AmeriKKKa is a systematic racist place and it's impossible for any sense having black person to feel complete in that over-gloried country.

5. Since we relocated to Nigeria 2 months ago, we've felt peace like we never had in my 21 yrs in America. My kids are happier here and my wife love it too despite the little challenges. We complained about the lack of constant power supply at home but have since invested in multi battery inverters to give us 24 hours electricity. Despite all the little challenges we've experienced in Nigeria, nothing can make us leave again for the U.S. There is really nothing that we need from the U.S that we can't readily have in Nigeria.

6. Business opportunities abound in Nigeria and the current strength of the dollar is to your advantage. The locals here don't really see the opportunities starring them right in the eyes 'cause they're too busy trying to make instant millions when they could gradually build an empire.

7. 1 met 7 other returness from AmeriKKKa and we all came to the same conclusion that Nigeria is actually a better place to live and raise kids than AmeriKKKa. The simple minded will never understand that 'cause they're so wrapped up in materialism and glamorization of AmeriKKKa but those of us who have lived there for decades can easily tell the difference of how fake AmeriKKKa is as a nation and how the country can never truly be integrated.

8. Since we relocated, I have not experience any iota of racism and that in itself is peace to my soul.

9. I've been educating my African-American friends to come visit Africa and start reconnecting with their roots for a deeper cleansing and rebirth.

9. My family will gladly welcome you and 'cause we shared the same struggles with African-Americans and we can advise you of do and don'ts and how to live a balance life in Nigeria.

10. Lastly, my wife and I vowed never to step foot in America again knowing all we know now.

Keep in touch!

Wow very encouraging, Thankyou for sharing your inspiring story. You get it. Thank you for reaching out to me you really hit everything spot on in your post. Best one I've read today. Tell your wife I said hi. I will keep in touch

Calabar is a nice place. Very few problems.

Question for you, as a potential Nigerian, what is your opinion of the political situation in the country especially with the elections?

Hmm I'd rather not say, I've gotten enough backlash for one day

I read that all you know is that you are of an African decent, which means you haven't lived in Nigeria or have some relatives in Nigeria?....So the best advice I'll give to you, is try going to Nigeria first for maybe 6 months, in order to get a feel of how life in Nigeria could be for you and your daughter.
There you will know how to sort out where to settle in terms of( high) cost of living; employement/ business ventures and security....Remember, Nigeria isn't America where some of your rights can get you ahead. You will have to be VERY SMART on how and where to invest. Have it in mind that you trust no one but yourself.....Also, remember this isn't the same case as you relocating from one state to another ( in America)....You are relocating to a totally different continent, and a place where your to ought to put your head before your heart.
GoodLuck!

Thank you I appreciate all your info and will take it onto consideration . Great tips, thanks again

its entirely a different thing to live there though. it can be done, but it has to be done right.

you are definately an inspiration for those of us that have similar aspirations. the mind set of the avrage african/nigerian is that west is always best so many wont uderstand why you would want to leave america let alone live in nigeria. i feel better that you are heading to calabar and not lagos. places like calabar, akwa ibom, abuja and enugu are places to ease yourself in.

I'm aware it would be different living there. It would be a big cultural change no matter what country in the world I decided to go to. Adjustment, determination, faith. I'm not worried at all. Tis my destiny

No worries, sis. I know that call all home too well. There are quite a few who are thinking along the same lines, not all are even black either.

do you know what you would like to do in nigeria and where you want to live. Please consider a gradual exposure to africa, then a gradual relocation with both and entry and exit plan.

i have lots of future plans for the redressing of the slave trade.......there needs to be a bringing together, and healing/reconciliation process between africa and all her descendants.

Yes my plan is in motion and currently being put in to place. I'm looking to relocate In calabar. I have friends all over Nigeria, Africa in general who I've know for years who I've learned a lot from and has been very good to me. I come visit calabar this August. I Idk why so many are replying assuming I don't know anything or what's going on over there.

One thing I love about naija is the rate of making money is in geometrical progression unlike in the rest of the world were it is arithmetic progression legally I mean.

If you are rich in naija you can actually make your home Behind as jand.

Glamrock, please be very careful with making any financial commitments on the Internet to any contractor. There are a lot of fraudsters on the Internet looking for unwary people to swindle them of their hard earned cash. It's great u have such an ambition to relocate here but please you need to be very careful so your experience will be exciting as your dream, rather than regretting your move. Never make any financial commitments on the Internet. I will suggest you talk to established real estate companies about your intention to buy a house and please don't even reveal that you are currently based in US until at the point that you have actually visited Calabar and see things yourselves (it's a very lovely city and one of the most peaceful around here). Though, it may cost you more, but you will be rest assured you are not being swindled. In addition, even if you are talking to an established real estate company, NEVER NEVER make any financial commitment or send cash to anybody online. You will not get your money back. My suggestion will be to buy an already built house where you don't have to deal with a host of issues associated with buying a land, developing it and building a house, and please do this through an established real estate firm and a bank, NOT through an individual, not even on Nairaland. I wish you all the best.

I would never send money to anyone over the internet and was never my plan

Inspite of the challenges of everyday living here and the comfort, advanced technology in US some African Americans feel lost. Glamrock should be encouraged to relocate to Nigeria. I am a civil engineer, based in warri not calabar. I don't think i would be available to handle a project that far away. however since the cost of construction is relatively the same across the country i could make an informed guess on the cost. an average 3 bedroom should be around say 5million naira, thats aside development fee and building permit.

By the way you must refrain from announcing that you are american, you may attract the wrong people. Also do not make the mistake of sending money down to anyone(not even me) in the name of erecting a house for you, rather try and get a trusted friend or relative who is on ground and who has lived here for a good while.

People can only scam you If you let them. I have people I've know for years all over Nigeria and have found the builder I'm working with but thank you
