- At least 30 people have lost their lives after high tension electricity cable fell on the roof of a football viewing centre - A source claims that 80 people were in the hall when the cable came down Over 30 people have lost their lives at a football viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River state capital, after high tension electricity cable broke from its mooring and fell on the roof of the building. According to Channels TV, the football fans were said to have assembled at the centre to watch a UEFA Europa League quarter-final match between Manchester United and Anderlecht on satellite television, a game the host won 2-1 (3-2) on aggregate to advance to the semi-final. A survivor told The Punch that a transformer near the viewing centre located in the Iyang-Esu area of the Calabar Municipal local government area exploded during the match and this caused a high-tension cable to drop on the viewing centre. The survivor said amid sobs: “It happened during the match between Manchester United and Anderlecht. I heard a deafening bang. I rushed out to see what was happening. When I turned back to go inside the viewing centre, I saw a cable coming down on the centre and this killed the viewers in the hall. “It was a horrible sight to behold. I wish I didn’t come out to watch the match. Come to think of it, I have DStv at home but I enjoy watching matches at viewing centres. I could have been dead. I can’t believe that the people I was chatting and joking with a few minutes ago are all gone in a most anguishing way. This world is vain.” A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said more than eighty persons were in the hall when the cable came down. The resident said:“The whole thing happened within a minute or two. It happened about 9:48pm. Those that died have been taken to the mortuary. A few that survived have been taken to hospitals.” The Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River state Command, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident. However, She said the number of casualties would be confirmed on Friday, April 21 (today). https://sports.naij.com/1100547-breaking-over-30-football-viewers-die-calabar-manutds-game-anderlecht.html |

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated that candidates applying for JAMB Direct Entry will not be sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). However, Direct Entry Students will sit for an aptitude test in the university they selected as their choice. This was disclosed by the Head of Information, JAMB, Mr. Fabian Benjamin in a telephone interview with newsmen. He said, “Direct Entry candidates will attempt an aptitude test which is school-based. They are not sitting for the UTME. The test is from the universities. The new book: Last Days At Forcados High School, we introduced will be used by Direct Entry candidates for the aptitude tests that will be conducted by the universities." http://globallords..com/2017/04/jamb-direct-entry-candidates-to-write.html |
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board in a statement made available by the Head of Information of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin revealed why Cyber cafes were not allowed to register candidates. According to him, most problems associated with candidates’ registration such as wrong spellings of names, wrongful placement of passport photograph and others emanates from the business centres at registration points. “Don’t forget, it is virtually impossible to regulate the activities of these business centres as their mode of operations did not provide necessary details about them. “These problems created by cafes make information gathering, processing and administration of examination cumbersome as records and data of candidates are distorted. “The accreditation centres are on the board’s website for easy identification cohesion and smooth operation." "The accreditation centres are on the board’s website for easy identification cohesion and smooth operation," it explained. "Ours is an examination, so we cannot be guided by primordial consideration over quality and standard." he said. http://globallords..com/2017/04/jamb-2017-why-cyber-cafes-were-not.html |
This is one of the reasons i dislike owning a HTC or SAMSUNG smartphone. Most of them get hot when being used for a shorter period of time. Their batteries get drained faster and its durability get reduced. Anyone experiencing such here ![]() |

A woman and her son have done the unthinkable, they claim to have fallen in love with one another. And now they want to marry since the mom, Betty Mbereko from Mwenezi in Masvingo, is six months pregnant and expecting her son’s child. Mbereko, 40, who was widowed 12 years ago, has been cohabiting with her first child, Farai Mbereko (23). She confirms that she is six month pregnant and that she has decided it is better to “marry” her son because she does not want to marry her late husband’s young brothers, whom she says are coveting her. Betty stunned a village court last week when she said the affair with her son had begun three years earlier. She said after spending a lot of money sending Farai to school following the death of her husband, she felt she had a right to his money and no other woman was entitled to it.
