CultureRe: Northerner Has Spoken by gmemdee(m): 12:45pm On Oct 03, 2007
I'm of the view that no post here has addressed ,sufficiently, the issues raised by Davidylan. As a digression, i'm bemused by the optimism and patriotism expressed in most posts, by Nigerians living abroad, about Nigeria. There might be a psychological basis for it.

For me, Davidylan puts forth the issues that we have shied away from as a nation. I'll not rehash his arguments. What befuddles me is why we are bent on towing a path that for 47 years has led us no where. I do hope that it would not require another 47 years, where we are grappling with the same issues that we faced at independence, for us to redefine the basis of our nationhood. Maybe i'm too sanguine. Perhaps we are doomed to a life of backwardness.
LiteratureRe: What Is Your Favourite John Grisham's Novel by gmemdee(m): 3:29pm On Jun 09, 2007
I would say The Partner. Let me add though that as much as i love Grisham's novels i
can't understand why they end with the protagonist somehow , how do i put it?em, well losing out. I was heartbroken after i read the Partner. Then i read the rainmaker, the firm, the street lawyer, King of torts,, etc and i noticed the pattern.
PoliticsRe: The Nigeria Army: Best In Land Troops Worldwide? by gmemdee(m): 2:25pm On Jun 09, 2007
@rubbermaid your posts are quite illuminating.Accept my praise for your logical analysis
of the issue.
A few words of mine:
We should note that the UN's rating is strictly based on performance during peacekeeping
missions. The UN is in no position to judge the fighting capability of national armies.

To make this debate scientific, and beyond our patriotic emotions, we would have to introduce measurable parameters by which to judge armies. Ofcourse it goes without saying that such a scientific treatment of the issue would be impossible in this forum.

In the interim, however, i feel that the issue of which army is the best or whatever else,
should not be the immediate concern of a backward nation like Nigeria. Japan has, for the last four decades, been a largely pacifist nation but i doubt that more than a few nations have their clout.

PoliticsRe: Obasanjo Is Nigeria's Must Corrupt President by gmemdee(m): 10:12am On May 25, 2007
I doubt that the assertion can be proved in a court of law.But this is'nt a law court.Since 1999 Obasanjo actions has made me willing to believe @monsieur P. I intend to catalogue his many questionable actions in a future post.
PoliticsRe: Wole Soyinka Talks Too Much - Should Be Brought To Order by gmemdee(m): 9:58am On May 25, 2007
So one needs to have "political relevance" before one can air one's view? How is political relevance defined? Am quite sure that if we allowed people to name those they feel have "political relevance" it would be a list of who is who in the the history of incompetence, corruption and mediocrity that is Nigeria.
As to the criticism that Soyinka says nothing negative on Atiku,my reply would be that they've missed the point of Soyinka's criticisms. And oh!Full disclosure:Soyinka is my idol.

@zhia2000,
am pained that you tarred dungar and I with the same brush. I do not see how my post can be referred to as ethnocentric.I just pointed out a fact.It is a painful fact, but it is what it is.No where, however, did I say any ethnic group or tribe is better than the other. But if you read dungar's post you see that he is implying,no, explicitly saying that people were selected not on merit but on the basis of their states of origin, and what is more, that if merit were to be the criteria those selected would not have the chance. Painfully there is no evidence to back his assertion. His geo-political zone?He stated that all by himself.
I also hope with you that a Nigeria without quota system becomes a reality, soonest. And may I congratulate you on your success.

dungar:
fellow landers, i congratulate those that were successful and pray 4 we that didnt make it.
BUT I HAVE NOTICED SOMETHING WITH THE WAY THEY SELECION WAS DONE.
THE SELECTION IS BASED ON QUATER SYSTEM NOT ON MERIT, THIS IS because WHEN I CALLED AND WAS TOLD I DIDNT MADE IT, I THEN PROCEED FURTHER TO ASK HOW MANY PER STATE WHERE SELECTED AND WAS TOLD THAT PRIORITY IS BEEN GIVEN TO THE SOUTH-SOUTH AND SOUTH -EAST CANDIDATE. THAT FOR THE OTHER STATES ITS 3persons PER STATE.
I WAS SHOCK AND I TOLD MY SELF THAT I AM PROUD TO BE A NOTHERNER, IF LNG WILL DISCRIMINATE ME GOD WILL NOT, SO MY PEOPLE THIER IS HOPE JUST KEEP PRAYING FOR BETTER OPPORTUNTIES.
THANKS.

This is the kind of "sour grapes" comments that should be beneath nairalanders. I would advise dungar to seek self improvement rather than attributing his inability to pass the test to a so-called quater system{sic}. His post is so riddled with grammatical errors that one wonders how he convinced himself that he could pass on merit.
As an aside,i find it amusing that a northerner should complain about the quota system now entrenched in Nigeria. Northerners not only brought the concept;they have benefitted the most.
PoliticsRe: New President Elect(fgn)what Do We Expect?(innovations, new Governace) by gmemdee(m): 8:41pm On Apr 24, 2007
Abdulrazak:
Yar'adua is the new president elected, taking into cognisance his administration as katsina state governor, his he a man of innovations, initiatives, credibility, convictions. Can he deliver for this great country, can he make better changes in our crippled economy, can he take us to the promised land?let's share views!
Oh really?!would you care to tell us where and how he exhibited this "innovations, " I doubt that we can use the adjectives above for any governor in Nigeria. If he is the angel of wisdom and probity that PDP (as if they know the meaning of these words) says he is, why did'nt PDP allow Nigerians the right to vote, why did they resort to the kind of tactics that was witnessed on saturday. For some of us to think that a credible and competent leader can come from the PDP, worse, that such a leader can emerge from a decidedly fraudulent process that was Nigeria's election ,is pure delusion.I am constrained to think that Nigeria is doomed to mediocre leadership.
PoliticsRe: Umaru Yar' Adua: by gmemdee(m): 8:22pm On Apr 24, 2007
olunifemi:
Under normal circumstances, all that should not matter but in Nigeria, nothing seems to operate normally and that makes me fear for Yar'adua (Mr. Gentility). Only good news for me is that his hands have not being soiled with corruption in the past and he was once a member of a communist/socialist group in ABU Zaria. But does he have the ruggedness to survive the terrain? He looks frail and fragile!

but Zik go university(lincoln university) .just dt Yaradua is the first that attended indigenous university.
Who voted for Buhari anyway? That sharia man?
No.it is'nt that Yaradua is the first that attended a Nigerian university,it is that Zik was never Nigeria's ruler. He was essentially, some would say unfortunately,a ceremonial head.
May i ask,how do you know whose hands have been soiled by corruption?a year ago Yaradua was not on Nigeria's raddar, much of what we know about him is largely PDP propaganda. His inadequacies,if there exist, would soon be served up for our consumption.
RomanceRe: Why Do Girls Dress To Kill? by gmemdee(m): 1:25pm On Apr 18, 2007
i think we have'nt considered that perhaps a girl's dress is strickly her concern;that she may "dress to kill" because she feels like it, that she does not do it for others but for herself.Morever like i learnt at ABU what some may call a "dress to kill", may be perfectly normal to others.its largely subjective.I would like to read views from babes on this.
PoliticsRe: No Adams Oshiomole, No Edo State by gmemdee(m): 1:13pm On Apr 18, 2007
Elections in Nigeria always leave a sour taste in the mouth;at least mine.
There is always the talk of "accepting defeat" ,seeking redress in court and a whole load of patronising rubbish. When you make a contest decidedly unfair, how do you expect people to accept defeat?PDP rigs elections( i have "experiential" evidence) and then says others are bad losers;then one comes to nairaland and hears talk about saving our "democracy". There is'nt any thing as democracy in Nigeria, not until a ruling party allows the electoral process to be free and devoid of manipulations of the kind we've witnessed in this country since its origin.
PoliticsRe: President Obasanjo And Atiku Indicted For Corruption by gmemdee(m): 10:21am On Mar 22, 2007
i wonder if we've stopped to consider the fact that all this hoopla is over just one agency.
what will we find when NNPC, and other such agencies have their operations investigated?
