European Union governments cannot pick and choose whether to execute arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against two Israeli leaders and a Hamas commander, the EU's foreign policy chief said on Saturday.

The ICC issued the warrants on Thursday against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defence minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leader Ibrahim Al-Masri, for alleged crimes against humanity.


All EU member states are signatories to the ICC's founding treaty, called the Rome Statute.
Several EU states have said they will meet their commitments under the statute if needed, but Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has invited Netanyahu to visit his country, assuring him he would face no risks if he did so.

The states that signed the Rome convention are obliged to implement the decision of the court. It's not optional," Josep Borrell, the EU's top diplomat, said during a visit to Cyprus for a workshop of Israeli and Palestinian peace activists.


Those same obligations were also binding on countries aspiring to join the EU, he said.
"It would be very funny that the newcomers have an obligation that current members don't fulfil," he told Reuters.


The United States rejected the ICC's decision and Israel said the ICC move was antisemitic.
"Every time someone disagrees with the policy of one Israeli government - (they are) being accused of antisemitism," said Borrell, whose term as EU foreign policy chief ends this month.

LONDON — Britain's armed forces would be ready to fight their Russian counterparts "tonight" if Vladimir Putin invades another Eastern European nation, a top U.K. military chief said Thursday.

"If the British Army was asked to fight tonight, it would fight tonight," Rob Magowan, the deputy chief of the British defense staff, told the House of Commons defense committee. "I don't think anybody in this room should be under any illusion that if the Russians invaded Eastern Europe tonight, then we would meet them in that fight."

The striking comments came as MPs asked Magowan Thursday how many British brigades could get to NATO's eastern flank in the event of a major escalation by Russia.

Eastern European NATO members including Latvia and Estonia have nervously eyed Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while Finland, which borders Russia to its east, just this week warned about sabotage of critical infrastructure. NATO rules on collective defence stipulate that an attack on one member is viewed as an attack on all.

Despite Magowan's tough talk, concerns remain about the U.K.'s military capability in the event of a European escalation.

Britain's land army is at its smallest size since the 1700s. Just last month, U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey told POLITICO that the state of the armed forces was “far worse than we thought” after his Labour Party entered government over the summer.

Healey announced Wednesday afternoon that the U.K. is axing five warships and a dozen military helicopters and drones as part of a cost-cutting program. The U.K. is currently conducting a Strategic Defense Review.

A Bauchi State resident, Muhammad Ibrahim, has cancelled his wedding ceremony after medical tests revealed he is not genetically compatible with his fiancée, Fatima Abdulqadir.

In a Facebook post shared on November 21, 2024, Ibrahim announced the decision to call off the wedding, which was scheduled for November 29, 2024.

He explained that both he and his fiancée were AS genotype carriers, posing a significant risk of having children with sickle cell disease.

Ibrahim, a Zoology graduate from Bauchi State University, disclosed that they discovered this only last month after undergoing tests at two separate hospitals to confirm the results.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the couple had been in a three-year relationship but had not prioritised genotype testing, assuming there would be no issues.

In the Facebook post, Ibrahim wrote, “Dear friends and family, it’s with an incredibly heavy heart that I regretfully announce the cancellation of my upcoming wedding.

“Due to unforeseen genetic compatibility issues, my partner and I have made the difficult decision to go our separate ways.”

He described the news as a “devastating shock”, adding that their inability to proceed with the wedding had left him heartbroken.

Speaking with our correspondent, Ibrahim said some family members encouraged him and his fiancée to proceed with their plans, but they declined.

He noted that the decision was made out of concern for potential health risks associated with having children who might inherit the sickle cell gene.

The ICC issued the warrants on Thursday, accusing Netanyahu and Gallant of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war in Gaza.


A warrant was also issued for Mohammed Deif, the military chief of the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas.

According to Turkish Newspaper, Daily Sabah, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that Italy would be obliged to arrest Netanyahu if he visited.

Speaking on RAI’s Porta a Porta program, Crosetto said he disagreed with equating Netanyahu and Gallant with Hamas but acknowledged Italy’s obligation as an ICC member to act on the warrants.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani echoed support for the ICC while emphasizing that its role must remain legal, not political. Tajani added that Italy would consult with allies on how to proceed.

This marks the first time a sitting leader from a major Western country has been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity by an international tribunal.

The ICC panel alleged Netanyahu and Gallant are responsible for war crimes, including starvation, and crimes against humanity such as murder, persecution, and inhumane acts.

Over 44,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been killed during the conflict, according to local health authorities.

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp confirmed that the Netherlands would arrest Netanyahu if he entered Dutch territory.
