UMUAHIA—LEADER of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has said that the Federal government re-arresting him would quicken the actualization of the Republic of Biafra.

Kanu also said that nobody can restrict his movement in any part of the country and that he is free to go to any part of Nigeria, including Lagos, if he so wishes.

According to the IPOB leader who spoke in Umuahia, nobody can stop him from visiting Lagos State if he wants to visit there, saying he was not bothered by threats by some elements that his safety would not be guaranteed in Lagos.

If you arrest me, Biafra will come even quicker than we anticipate. I am not afraid of being arrested. I have been there before and if need be, I will also be there again.

“I will be very happy if they re-arrest me. If we are hoping for 90% compliance with the boycott of Anambra State Governorship election, my arrest will make the compliance 100 %.

“But why will I be re-arrested and nobody is going to arrest Tanko Yakassai or Ango Abdulahi because of what they have been saying? Is it because they are Fulani? They own Nigeria? They are immuned to arrest? Is arrest only meant for Biafrans and not for Fulani?

“I have friends with connections in Lagos, Fani Fayode is my friend and he is in Lagos. If I try to visit him in Yoruba land, then I must see him in Lagos”.

Kanu also denied promoting hate speech as being accused of by his critics, saying that condemnation of the injustices in Nigeria or the agitation for self- rule does not in any way amount to hate speech.

I completely disagree with them. They are the pioneers of hate speech. Go through the text of speeches made by Ango Abdulahim, Tanko Yakassia or the ones made by one Abubarkar. Are those ones not hate speeches? Unfortunately, I blame the deplorable state of education in Nigeria because they don’t know what hate speech is all about.

“Does asking for self determination amount to hate speech? Or asking for referendum hate speech? Where did they go to school? I think they need to invest more in education because self determination is no way equal to war or hate speech”, Kanu said.

Kanu’s call for referendum is in order — Cleric

The General Overseer of Mount Zion Faith Global Liberation Ministries Inc, aka By Fire By Fire, Nnewi, Anambra State, Bishop Abraham Chris Udeh has thrown his weight behind the call by IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu for a referendum or there would be no election in Anambra state.

Bishop Udeh, who spoke to newsmen yesterday at his Church auditorium, said Kanu’s call for the boycott of the election unless a referendum is conducted was in order and should be obeyed.

He said those who faulted Kanu on his insistence for referendum must have seen how the National Assembly threw away the issue of devolution of power or what some people call restructuring in its on-going constitutional amendment effort, adding that this alone has justified the call for referendum.

The cleric noted that there was no amount of pressure that would make the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to listen to the yearning of the people for restructuring.

According to him, “these are the reasons that made me give 100 percent support to the referendum being canvassed by Kanu and my argument is that if President Muhammadu Buhari’s government had a listening ear, it would not have toyed with the peoples demand to restructure Nigeria.”

The cleric insisted that for these reasons, all Nigerians should rise up to support referendum to be conducted, so that those who do not want to remain in Nigeria can easily transform to Biafra.

The Trafficking in Persons Report, released by the United States Department of State, shows that security officers have been indicted for sexually exploiting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in government-run camps.

The report said Nigeria has not met minimum requirements for the elimination of human trafficking though it agrees that the country is making efforts to reduce the scourge.

The report, presented by U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on Thursday, was set in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This year’s Trafficking in Persons Report sends a strong message to the world that global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and enduring discriminatory policies and practices, have a disproportionate effect on individuals already oppressed by other injustices,” Mr Blinken gave in his opening address at the launch of the report.

The report said that while the government of Nigeria does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, it has demonstrated improvement in its efforts despite COVID-19.

“These efforts included convicting more traffickers and sanctioning the majority of perpetrators with significant prison terms; prosecuting officials suspected of being complicit in trafficking crimes; improving intra-governmental coordination on anti-trafficking operations; launching nine new state task forces; and for the first time, the Ministry of Defence acknowledged service members sexually exploited internally displaced persons (IDPs),” the report read.

However, it notes the failure of the government to meet minimum standards, citing the abuse of two children at an IDP camp by officers of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Borno State and continuous reports of sex trafficking in government-run IDP camps. It also highlighted corruption in the judiciary and immigration services as a going concern.

The report covered prosecution, noting an increase in convictions, citing laws in effect such as the Trafficking in Persons Law Enforcement and Administration Act (TIPLEAA), as amended in 2015. It described the penalties for the crimes as “sufficiently stringent and, with regard to sex trafficking, commensurate with those prescribed for other serious crimes, such as kidnapping.”

Under protection, the report noted the government’s efforts to identify victims, in spite of poor welfare services provided for them.

“In total, the government – including NAPTIP, NPF, and ETAHT efforts – identified approximately 499 victims and 812 potential victims, according to official, NGO, and media reporting,” the document said.

The report recommends that the government hold complicit individuals criminally accountable for trafficking offenses, enhance coordination on law enforcement efforts and prosecute suspects while respecting the rights of the accused.

It also asks that the government increase awareness programmes to educate more

of the population on human trafficking indicators as well as implementing the country’s 2021-2025 draft anti-trafficking national action plan in coordination with CSOs partner governments, and the private sector.
