Career / Re: What Is The Basic Salary For An ACA Holder ? by gokuu(m): 9:30pm On Oct 27, 2012
GentleFrank: Considering the fact that ICAN exams are tough and costly to take, i will like to know the expected salary payments after passing the exams finally as an ACA. Experienced people in the house should pls help out. I want to take a quick decision now.
If you think ICAN is tough, try CIMA! That's tough!
If you think ICAN is expensive, try ACCA! That's expensive!
Don't expect a huge salary for just holding an ICAN certificate because ICAN is such a common thing now, everybody is now 'chartered'. What i think really matters if your work experience, your degree course, your class of degree, e.t.c.

Hmmn.....this is yet another feat in that University. 88 out of 1389! Is it just me or is it really high? I'm sure they wouldn't be good enough for a 3rd class in AKOKA. Many of my lecturers TEACH there and they tell us they teach them highly simplified things. All the same, 'congrats' to them.

UNILAG has some alumni there, including the senate Majority leader, Victor Ndoma-egba. Education / NIMASA Budgets N1bn For Maritime Institute At UNILAG by gokuu(m): 12:39am On May 06, 2012
With an initial take off grant of N1billion naira, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is set to establish an Institute for Maritime Studies at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Yaba, Lagos.
NIMASA Director- General, Mr. Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi, disclosed this when members of the Unilag’s Committee for Sourcing of Financial Assistance from Public and Private Organisations led by its Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Hussaini, paid him a courtesy visit.
According to Akpobolokemi :“The University of Lagos was selected as a beneficiary of one of these institutes for obvious reasons. It is located in the commercial nerve centre of the country. It is also situated in a coastal state and has had a long and impressive history in the development of human capacity in Nigeria. We have therefore decided to partner the University of Lagos to further develop manpower especially in the maritime sector”.

The NIMASA boss noted that the partnership was part of the transformation agenda of the present administration to reposition the maritime sector and make it a hub in Africa.
He informed the committee that allocation has been made in the 2012 budget to cater for the establishment of the institute and that NIMASA would soon liaise with the university to work out modalities for the take-off.
Thanking the members of the committee for their visit, Akpobolokemi stressed that NIMASA will continue to partner UNILAG in the area of human capacity building which is a key component of the Agency’s four point agenda.

Earlier in his address, Hussaini said that UNILAG was desirous of partnering with NIMASA for the provision of a maritime vocational centre, a modern jetty and five ferry boats, among other demands.

Hussain,i who stated that the institution has adequate professionals that can collaborate with the agency in the areas of technical and human capacity development, also solicited assistance towards the institution’s 50th anniversary, which is expected to take place later this year.
NIMASA has proposed the establishement of Institutes of Maritime Studies in four universities in the country, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State; Niger Delta University, Amasoma, Bayelsa State; University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State; and the University of Lagos.

Politics / Again, YES-O Cadets Protest Non-payment Of Allowance by gokuu(m): 7:05am On Apr 24, 2012

FOR the second time in two months, cadets of the Youth Empowerment Scheme of Oyo State (YES-O), on Monday, staged a peaceful protest over the non-payment of their monthly allowance.

Speaking with newsmen at the Secretariat, where the protest was held, the cadets decried the replacement of their names by ghost names and those who never participated in the induction training held in February.

The protesters, who did not want their names in print, said the state government, which was supposed to pay them four month allowance arrears of N10,000 each, pleaded with them for understanding and agreed to pay from last month, instead of backdating the payment to December, when they were engaged by the government.

More shocking for the YES-O participants, who were mostly deployed in the Environmental and Solid Waste, was that on getting to the bank where the one month allowance was said to have been paid, their names were replaced with those who did not participate in the scheme.

The leader of the protesters alleged that one official in the Ministry of Environment told him that the “YES-O participants nominated by commissioners and politicians could not wait for others to be deployed before they would be allotted slots in the scheme.”

Reacting to the allegation, one of the coordinators of the scheme and Deputy Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr Abimbola Adekanmbi, said all the posted cadets had been fully paid, though there was an initial hiccup arising as a result of ways of writing their names.

On the alleged substitution of names, Adekanmbi said government would investigate the matter and get to its root, adding that Governor Abiola Ajimobi had never handed down any list of cadets to the coordinating unit of the scheme, let alone any of his commissioners.
Politics / Food Vendors Protest In Osun Over Unfulfilled Promise by gokuu(m): 7:03am On Apr 24, 2012

FOOD vendors of Osun State government school feeding programme, on Monday, protested over the failure of the government to fulfill the promise made to them by Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The food vendors, numbering about 100, stormed the state secretariat in Abere, saying that they decided to stage a protest to register their displeasure over the inability of the state government to release funds it had promised them.

The protesters said the government promised each of them a loan of N200,000 after a seminar organised for them, adding that up till now, the government did not say anything on the matter.

According to one of them, “we have waited endlessly for the state government to fulfill its promise to increase our standard of living and improve our production, but we are tired of waiting endlessly. ”

After a meeting Governor Aregbesola had with delegates of the food vendors, they said the governor appealed to them to exercise patience till the loan will be made available.

The food vendors expressed their dissatisfaction over failure of the delegates to present their case properly before the governor, adding that they only discussed issues that affected them in their various local government areas.

^I'm starting to doubt the gokuu fellow is indeed from unilag or if he's in lagos at all.

He sounds quite bush, local and unlike anyone who ever passed though a secondary school let alone university.

There's also a huge difference between the way he posts and other unilag students/alumni.

I guess the op should find out which school he attends (in his village) and join him there.

I do hope unilag doesnt produce illiterates like gokuu.

Would be very unfortunate.

Education / Ibrahim Adewale Ogundeko: Ignored At Home, Celebrated Abroad! by gokuu(m): 1:45pm On Mar 05, 2012
He is one of the graduands in UNILAG 2012 convocation ceremony. Ogundeko studied Mechanical Engineering and won the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) beating the rest of the world. He was the only West African students that scaled the international hurdles with bulk of the contestants from top class institutions in the United State of America.

The project was on the manufacture of solar powered refrigerator with solar tracking incorporated for optimal power generation. It emerged the winner in the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) zonal conference in Ibadan but failed to shine at the national level in Calabar. Ogundeko was disappointed; he said “I felt cheated because no reason was given for the decision to drop me from the national finalists”. But today, “my case is that of a prophet without honor in his own house. After all, it was the same project that got me the ASHRAE award”

It takes a dreamer to go a step further having faced national rejection. Logically, to be rejected nationally could imply not good enough for international competition but believing in the quality of your work and taking another step again despite the first denial was instrumental to emerging ASHRAE winner.

Have you been rejected before, told not good, smart or intelligent enough by some experts? Let the story of Ibrahim Adewale Ogundeko challenge you to try again and fortune might smile on you!

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has donated the sum of N100million (Hundred Million Naira) to the University of Lagos for the construction of the JP Clark Centre at the Faculty of Arts of the University.

The donation was in fulfillment of the promise made by the Governor at the Special Distinguished Lecture to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the Faculty of Arts held on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the Afe Babalola Auditorium. Governor Uduaghan was the Guest Lecturer at the occasion.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe received the cheque in his office on behalf of the University on Thursday, February 9, 2012.

The Vice-Chancellor in his letter of appreciation expressed gratitude to Governor Uduaghan on behalf of the entire staff and students of the University. He assured the Governor that actual construction of the JP Clark Centre would commence as soon as possible.

His words, “Indeed the entire staff and students of our great University and especially the Faculty of Arts will forever remain grateful to you for this kind gesture in honour of a most deserving son of Delta State, Emeritus Professor J.P. Clark. While I pray that God Almighty will continue to strengthen and support you in your endeavours, please accept sir, the assurances of my highest regard”.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Duro Oni also joined the Vice-Chancellor to thank the Delta State Governor. He noted that the JP Clark Centre, when completed, would go a long way to ease the current difficulties with regard to lecture and other facilities in the Faculty.

Born on April 6, 1935, Professor John Pepper Clark Bekederemo is one of Nigeria’s foremost Anglophone dramatists and poets. He served for several years as a Professor of English at the University of Lagos, a position from which he retired in 1980. His wife, Professor Ebun Clark was a former Director of the Centre for Cultural Studies at the University of Lagos.

I have met quite a handful and they were not bad at all. They also have a very good mechanical and petroleum engineering department, a colleague at work studied mechanical at futo and he pulls his own weight.
At the end of the day education in naija is boils down to how hard you want to work to improve yourself but all factors should be considered in choosing a school. Something is def wrong in unilag if they churn out first class the way they do every year.
something is definitely wrong with your brain(if you have one).

Getting into western schools if you are not from the west is not easy at all, when you say best of the best I dont think that is right. True Unilag might have some very vintage departments but in my short journey of the real engineering world I barely see these engineering students. Where are they at?
Arrant nonsense. Once you perform VERY well, you'll be admitted into UNILAG. Its when people fail that they begin to give unnecessary excuses. UNILAG attracts the best set of students from the best secondary schools in Nigeria and its faculty of engineering is the STRONGEST in Nigeria. So stop all this your eastern/futo hullabaloo.
