Cruise missiles are among a growing collection of North Korean weapons designed to overwhelm regional missile defences. They supplement the North’s vast arsenal of ballistic missiles, including intercontinental variants, which are said to be aimed at the continental United States. Analysts say anti-aircraft missile technology is an area where North Korea could benefit from its deepening military cooperation with Russia, as the two countries align in the face of their separate, intensifying confrontations with the US. The US and South Korea have accused the North of providing artillery shells and other equipment to Russia to help extend its warfighting ability in Ukraine. |

Some suspected Yoruba Nation agitators, on Saturday, invaded the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi in Ibadan, the state capital. Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Online that the masked men were stationed at different locations within the area. This situation, according to investigation, sent panic to the residents and road users along the routes. Businesses and residents around Bodija, Ikolaba, and Awolowo were said to have quickly locked their shops and doors as some who were about to open for the day’s business turned back. It was further learnt that the security operatives on duty at the secretariat were shocked as they were unable to disperse the agitators until the arrival of policemen from the state command and other anti-crime agencies in conjunction with members of the Nigerian Army, 2 Division, who demobilised them. Operatives of the state security network codenamed Amotekun were also said to have been on the ground. Motorists plying the route were said to have been making a detour as many other road users scampered to safety. Road users en route Secretariat were diverted along Customs Junction as the Secretariat-Queen Elizabeth Road had been cut off traffic. It was gathered that the efforts of the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (retd.), to calm the situation were futile, as the agitators insisted on hoisting their flag within the Secretariat. As of the time of this report, efforts to get the State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso’s reaction, were unsuccessful as his mobile number was not reachable. https://punchng.com/suspected-yoruba-nation-agitators-invade-oyo-govs-office/?amp

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State says local government chairmen disrespecting him will fall into the pit they have dug. He said this while inaugurating the Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Centre in Ndoni, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of the state, on Thursday. Upon sighting the Chairman of ONELGA at the event, the governor expressed surprise, saying LGA chairmen have formed the habit of staying away from state functions. Nyesom Wike, Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who is having a cold war with the governor, is believed to be in control of local government structure in the state. While inaugurating the centre, the governor said, “I’m surprised that I saw the chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government here. I’m very surprised because before now, any event that had to do with the state government, all the local government chairmen, as it were, didn’t participate. "I hope when you leave here, they are not going to sack you because I know you are not loyal to me. Or when you leave here, you will grant a press interview that it was not you, but your shadow? "But let me say it here. Every one of you who thinks you are disrespecting me, you have already dug your pit. You will fall inside it. That is the truth. Our minds are very open. We do not wish anyone bad, but we expect you to know and do what is right. For those of you who have chosen to take the part that you think is that way that leads to your salvation, safe journey.” Away from politics, Fubara said when he assume office in May, over 340 primary healthcare centres across the state were in deplorable condition. He commended Dr Peter Odili-owned PAMO Educational Foundation, which built ONELGA healthcare centre, for the project. On his part, Odili said he was motivated to undertake the project because two years ago, when floods ravaged Ndoni town, the health centre in the community was destroyed, leaving people within 50km radius without immediate healthcare services. Odili, who endorsed the governor as the political leader of the state, urged him to continue in his strides of people-oriented projects execution, touching the lives of the people directly with his governance. He stated, “Let me congratulate you for winning the hearts of Rivers people by standing up to your oaths of office to defend the interest of all Rivers people in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we are proud of you,” “Politics is over and it’s now time for governance and you have hit the ground running, you have touched the critical sectors such as education, health, and others in less than one year in office.” https://dailytrust.com/youve-dug-your-pit-fubara-bombs-lg-chairmen-loyal-to-wike/?utm_source=beloud.com&utm_medium=beloud.com

By Dayo Johnson, Akure The former National Chairman South West of the People’s Democratic Party, Dr Eddy Olafeso, has said that the party would bounce back in 2027. Olafeso said this in Akure, at a One – Day seminar for Media Aides of the party’s governorship aspirants in the state. He said that “With the future we have shared together in Peoples Democratic Party, no matter the challenges we are facing at this moment, we are very sure and confident that the future will be better and that PDP will take back power and connect to do what it did in the past to develop Nigeria. ” I am very confident that we will return. "Part of what we are doing this moment started with an internal process of communication with ourselves and once we get that one right, once we understand our history, once we understand the fact that we need one another and that if we are not united, there will be problem ahead of us. "We are sure that the future will take care of itself and we are very resolute and beside that, the future of Nigeria, especially the current situation that Nigerians are facing under APC can’t continue forever. “There’s no middle class anymore, there is poverty in the Land, there is insecurity. "Then what else can we hope for but for the support of the people that will make the PDP’s dream of creating prosperity for this country happen as quickly as possible. Earlier, the state party chairman Hon Tola Alabere, asked the media aides to be good ambassador of the party. Alabere said that “The main reason for this programme is to tell you that PDP is the party in Ondo State. I must tell you that I don’t see PDP as opposition party in the state because we’re supposed to be in government. “It is PDP itself that usually worked against the party when it comes to election. We will divide ourselves after the primary and do other sought of things. Tha chairman expressed worries over the attacks of aspirants by the media aides of the aspirants. Alabere said that “The roles all of you are playing today is not geared towards bringing the aspirants together. What you write on social media platforms are not geared towards strengthening the party. ”If aspirant “A” should win the primary, he will need the support and cooporation of aspirants. But, the moment you come in between your principal and other aspirants, will they be ready to support him when he wins? So, you have a major role to play in uniting the party. “I want to advise you to conserve the energy you are putting to bring down co-aspirants with your principal for APC. You didn’t see anything wrong in what APC is doing in Ondo State? The state party chairman said that ” The major reason any political party is contesting an election is to win and this is the best opportunity for us in this state. We are more than APC in Ondo State. I want to plead with you to see this project as your project. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/04/pdp-ll-bounce-back-in-2027-olafeso/amp/

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has said that Nigeria has nothing to do with poverty "if political leaders, including my humble self, had decided to serve the country faithfully." Obi added that the only way to address permanently the effects of poverty and insecurity in Northern Nigeria was through agriculture and industrial revolution. Calling on everyone to join hand with the government to address the current economic situation, Obi explained that present socio-economic instability in the country required leaders and citizens to close ranks. According to Guardian, the former Anambra State Governor, spoke during a visit to the Emir of Zazzau in Kaduna State, Nuhu Bamali, as part of his ongoing tour of the North. Lamenting that most of the vast arable lands in the North were uncultivated, the Labour Party chieftain, regretted that most of the industries in the region had gone moribond like in other parts of the country because of lack of political will and inconsistent government policies. He was quoted to have said: “The way things are in our country today requires that all of us must get involved in one way or another. Nigeria has nothing to do with poverty, if political leaders, including my humble self, had decided to serve the country faithfully. "If we do, Nigeria will have nothing to do with poverty. I will always say this anytime I have the opportunity because Nigeria is one of the countries in the world that is blessed with everything that is required." He added: “Looking at the North, we can make more money from agriculture than we are making from oil. We have vast uncultivated land in the North, which can help pull people out of poverty, provide food for Nigeria, provide raw materials for industrialisation, and support export. "We need to invest in the North. Insecurity is driven by poverty. The more you pull people out of poverty, the more you reduce insecurity.” https://saharareporters.com/2024/04/09/if-political-leaders-including-me-had-served-nigeria-faithfully-we-would-not-be-poverty

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has protested against the Federal Inland Revenue Service’s (FIRS’) recent Easter message bearing “Jesus paid your debt, not your taxes” as insensitive and derogatory. This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by CAN’s Director, National Issues and Social Welfare, Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (Rtd). Commodore Ayuba said that as a nation that prided itself on religious harmony and peaceful coexistence, CAN was deeply concerned by the recurrence of provocative messages around religious holidays. The statement reads in part: “This year, a public institution which should be the bastion of exemplary conduct has been implicated in disseminating content that is widely regarded as offensive and derogatory to the Christian faith. FG to speed up work on Ekiti roads – Umahi FG calls for Ramadan Reflection, advocates unity community empowerment “The analogy drawn by the FIRS between the pivotal Christian doctrine of redemption and the civic duty of tax payment has been received with distress and indignation by the Christian community.” He noted that the association recognised that the intended message might have been to creatively engage taxpayers; but that the execution regrettably crossed the bounds of cultural and religious decorum. He said while the FIRS’s intent might not have been to show irreverence, the impact of the message could not be ignored, and that it was imperative to remember that the use of religious symbols and narratives should be handled with the highest degree of sensitivity, especially when intersecting with secular matters. In a swift reaction, Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser Media to the FIRS chairman, yesterday apologised to CAN and Christians who felt offended at the unintended consequence of its message on Easter Sunday. He said as a responsible agency of government, “we would like to say we did not put out the flier purposely to denigrate Jesus Christ or detract from the huge sacrifice He made for humanity. “The message was our way of uniquely engaging taxpayers and to remind them of the need to prioritise payment of their taxes as a civic obligation. "FIRS, as a responsible agency, has no religion and will not bring down any religion or offend the sensibilities of adherents of various faiths in the country. Our goal is to assess, collect and account for revenue for the wellbeing of the Federation.” https://dailytrust.com/can-protests-firs-jesus-debt-easter-message/

By John Owen Nwachukwu The Chairman, Igbo Community Assembly, Apo in Abuja, Ositadinma Patrick Nwoye, has asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, to apologize over alleged derogatory comments he made against the Igbos during the demolition of a housing estate belonging to Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu. The group gave Wike a seven-day ultimatum to issue a public apology to the Igbos or face the wrath of all Igbos and the gods of Igbo land. Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, Nwoye pointed out that Wike allegedly said ‘Why should an Igbo man be given such massive land there?’ and that he has dealt with Igbos in Port Harcourt, that he will do same here in Abuja. He stressed that such negative comments was not in the best interest of the country where there is an urgent need for peace and unity. “It has come to our notice about the alleged derogatory statement of Hon. Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Ezenwo Wike when he went to demolish the property of one of our illustrious sons in person of Hon. Evangelist Prince Nicholas Chukwujekwu Ukachukwu. “Such derogatory statement is totally uncalled for and should not be swept under the carpet. Because we the Igbos are not commoners in this country Nigeria and the world at large. Which is why we have to address this world Press Conference to keep the records straight. "Wike should apologise to the Igbos for using the alleged derogatory language. “That ‘why should an Igbo man be given such massive land and there?’ and that he has dealt with Igbos in Port Harcourt that he will do same here in Abuja. "We want to remind him that Abuja is not Port Harcourt,” Nwoye said. Nwoye said that there was a court order stopping the demolition which the FCT Minister had violated. “We also want to ask Nyesom Ezenwo Wike other fundamental questions on the said Asokoro land matter. “Question No. 1. Was there a court order restraining the demolition? Question No. 2 If there was, why was it not obeyed?” Nwoye presented copies of ministerial approvals for the Asokoro Estate as well as copies of the court order preventing the demolition of the estate. “He told Nigerians that their was no ministerial approval for the said Asokoro land but with me here is a copy of the ministerial approval. “He (Wike) is lying. We also have copies of the court orders. We also have copies of proof of service to show that he was duly served.” The group described Wike’s action as mere intimidation, hatred and envy for the Igbos and called on President Bola Tinubu to call the minister to order. https://dailypost.ng/2024/04/03/alleged-insult-on-igbos-apologise-within-7-days-or-face-our-gods-group-warns-wike/

By Seun Opejobi Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on Saturday, reacted to reports that the group is funded through sports betting and crowd-funding. He described such claims as false and laughable. The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, had revealed that global crowdfunding, online transactions, and sports betting fund terrorist organizations in Nigeria like Boko Haram, ISWAP, IPOB, bandits, and other such groups. In its newsletter, NFIU revealed how IPOB and Eastern Security Network, ESN, received funds through affiliates in 22 countries that have registered at least 27 entities under the group’s name. The financial unit said seven of the registrations were made in the United States, while six were in the United Kingdom. It added that over $160,000 raised by IPOB through crowd-funding was funneled to transmission, media, and broadcasting companies in Bulgaria, South Africa, and the UK. Condemning the report, Ejimakor said somebody was fishing in troubled waters. Posting on X, he wrote: “It’s incredible to claim that the IPOB (which is LEGAL globally) is funded through sports-betting & crowd-funding. The sports-betting part is false & laughable. “The crowd-funding part sounds like #GoFundMe which has never happened. Atiku also advised him to ensure that his election would not only be beneficial to the people of Senegal but should also be an inspiration to the rest of the people of the West African subregion. ormer Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, Atiku Abubakar has congratulated the Senegal’s President-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye for a well deserved victory. Atiku also advised him to ensure that his election would not only be beneficial to the people of Senegal but should also be an inspiration to the rest of the people of the West African subregion. Atiku, who stated this in statement on Friday, reiterated his call for opposition parties to forge a coalition that would be formidable enough to oust the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC), if the salvaging of Nigeria was to stand any chance. "Against the backdrop of recent military interventions in the West African subregion, the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as Senegal’s President-elect in the election of March 24, 2024 gives hope to the future of constitutional democracy in the region," the former Vice President explained. Atiku, however, noted that there was a huge lesson for Nigerians and elsewhere to learn from the Senegal experience. "It is an affirmation that democracy, which is anchored on the supremacy of the ballot, represents the best form of government. "It is also possible for the electoral umpire to run an election on the basis of the law and its own guidelines that give confidence to all parties and the voters." He said that Nigeria's experiences in both 2019 and 2023 show clearly that INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) performed below this expectation. "Whereas in Senegal, the responses of the major actors and the citizens are a validation of the process of the election that voted for President-elect Bassirou Diomaye. "It is important to note that last Sunday's election in Senegal follows the trend of that in Nigeria in 2015 that the opposition can indeed be victorious in an election conducted by the ruling party. "And for the opposition parties, the lessons are in agreement with my persistent call for our opposition parties to forge a coalition that is formidable enough to oust the ruling party if the salvaging of Nigeria is to stand any chance. "Congratulations, President-elect Faye. It is my hope and prayer that your election will not only be hugely beneficial to the people of Senegal but also an inspiration to the rest of us in the West African subregion," the statement partly read. https://saharareporters.com/2024/03/29/we-can-learn-senegal-form-strong-coalition-and-send-tinubu-apc-packing-atiku-tells

By Ignatius Igwe More reactions keep trailing the list of alleged terrorism financiers released by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) as well as the tragic murder of 17 military personnel in Delta State on March 14, 2024. While the military says investigations are ongoing, a former Commander of Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State, Major General Henry Ayoola (retd), described it as an assault on the Nigerian state. He was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme during the week. Excerpts: Give us a sense of what happened in Okuama community and within the security circle. There are a lot of talk about the implications, what could have led to the attack and the dynamics of this. For someone like you who has led troops in similar terrain, what came to your mind when you heard the story? Thank you very much. I will start by commiserating with the families of these gallant officers and soldiers who were gruesomely murdered in a very unusual way in a tragedy. It’s anathema. It’s a terrible thing that shouldn’t have happened at all. I just joined all members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and including those of us who are outside the service to commiserate with the families of the deceased personnel. We pray and trust that God will comfort the bereaved ones and that this kind of thing should never happen to us as a nation again. I also like to correct the numbers that are being bandied around. The actual number is 17 in total – the commanding officer who is a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain and 13 soldiers, making 17. The issue of human lives cannot be something we will be approximating so we need to be correct about it; it is 17 precious lives. What comes readily to my mind is: it is a sad load for me, for us, for our country to be in this state. I mean, as somebody who has seen the nation and been around the military sector for over 50 years, I asked myself: How did we get here? You know, how did we get here as a nation? When I was commanding Operation Safe Haven, we have had near such disasters before because what has happened over time is that our nation has lost touch with values, with ethics, with character. What we are seeing is a harvest of long-time failure of parental responsibilities, societal responsibility, of nurturing and upbringing. It’s a case that has gone through a cycle where you had parents who perhaps were not properly brought up and now become parents themselves. It’s sure to happen that way because the law of sowing and reaping applies in all situations, nobody beats it. What is done more greatly in one generation will be done in excess in the next. That’s how it works and that’s what we’re seeing. It’s a sorry state for us to be but I think it’s a clarion call for all of us to wake up and begin to address the real issues. We’ve done a lot of palliatives, dodging the issues and tolerating things that should have been decisively dealt with over the years. It’s not just something that is happening. What we’ve seen is a habit of several years of negligence, several years of padding things that should have been frontally dealt with. And that’s what we’re seeing now, where you have a situation that the level of civil disobedience has escalated to news not even being deterred by the fact that these are uniformed men and should be respected. It’s an assault on the state, it’s an assault on our collective psyche. It’s something that should outrage everyone of us and nobody should make any attempt to play down on it at all. It’s a wakeup call, we should all wake up and smell the coffee and say: ‘This cycle should end here.’ This cycle of bloodletting, this vicious circle of lawlessness at its peak should come to an end here and everybody should come into this fight. It is so sad, the brazen attack and the killing of men in uniform. The situation, according to those who know, says it’s a matter of a land dispute and you wonder the role of the military in this kind of situation. Has this been the procedure for the military to be called into this kind of civil engagement or what do you think could have been? Is it a normal procedure for the officers to be involved in this kind of situation at night? What could have gone wrong with this? Let’s look at it realistically, the truth of it is that our nation is not in the normal state. I mean, the fact that virtually every state in the country today has one military operation or the other tells you that we are not in a normal state. If not, then, why do we have operation this, operation that in all the states? It means we have crossed that threshold of what the normal civil enforcement agencies can handle. That’s what it means. We have been the same people putting so much pressure on the Armed Forces and say, even for non-kinetic measures, the soft-power options and all of that. Of course, the commanding officer would have thought to nip an obviously boiling issue before it escalates. There can be a thousand and one argument as to whether there was a tactical error or not. It doesn’t matter if a mistake was made. That a set of youths somewhere will have the audacity and the recklessness not to even spare people in uniform who have laid down their lives for the benefit of the rest of us? That level of temerity should not be tolerated. That’s my take on it. One can only imagine if this is not properly managed, a kind of aggression and a kind of reaction that could have come naturally if it’s not well–managed from the military. When I was on Operation Safe Haven, we held peace palace almost every week because it was clear that this was not just purely a security challenge. And so there was a need to engage different groups of people, different age groups, different ethnic groups, and different religious groups, all in an attempt to find a solution. In Yoruba, there is a proverb that when something is lost, you search for it anyhow. When you are trying to find a solution to very abnormal situations, you cross several lines, you bend backwards, you lower yourself to even, more or less becoming a preacher even though you are in uniform, you do everything because you want a solution. And if the solution is going to come by the softpower method, by the peace approach, why not? we have been too long in this state as a nation. If you imagine the amount of money that have been spent for the various operations that have been on in the country for over 20 years, those kinds of money will have been used to develop our infrastructure. So the military officers are aware of these things. They are not happy being out there doing what ordinarily should have been police work, nobody is happy with that. That’s the reality on the ground. Let me take you to the terrorism financiers’ list that was released by the authorities which listed about 15 persons and firms alleged to be involved in terror financing and are being listed for sanctions. What do you make of this? Nigeria has been battling to kill terrorism for over 20 years now from the northeast region. And now we’re seeing some active roles of these terror gangs within the northwest region of the country in the name of banditry. Now, one of those persons is facing a trial over alleged link to the train attack in Kaduna. Tukur Mamu in this particular situation. What comes to mind when you heard that the Buhari government had said it would release the list of terror financiers but for eight years that never happened. I think this is one place that we should give a pat on the back to the current government (the Bola Tinubu administration). I was on the edge severally during the last regime. There was lack of national will to deal with this situation at the time. It is good to see a government that is showing a stronger will to deal with these situations. I have said it again and again, that what we have is a political strategic problem masquerading as security challenges. I’ve said that 1001 times. In my analysis of insurgency and terrorism, I’ve talked about eight essays and indeed, one of the essays is what is coming out now – sponsors – because out of the eight essays, all the approaches we have applied in trying to solve the insurgency and terrorism in the country are just about two components of those eight. So adding this third one to it will go a long way because it’s like we’ve been dodging the issue. It’s like we’ve been dodging naming the enemy, naming the adversaries behind this problem. Are we saying that the gates of hell were open suddenly and Nigeria is just having these all-around security challenges coming? Is it that aliens were sent from some abyss to come and attack Nigeria all at the same time? https://www.channelstv.com/2024/03/24/buhari-lacked-political-will-tinubu-should-be-commended-for-naming-terror-financiers-major-general-ayoola/

By Afeez Hanafi The abducted Kuriga schoolchildren in Kaduna State have been released by their abductors after about 16 days in captivity. The state governor, Senator Uba Sani, announced their release on his verified Facebook page in the early hours of Sunday. The governor did not go into details of their release, but commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Nigerian Army. He wrote, “In the name of Allah the Beneficient, the Most Merciful, I wish to announce that our Kuriga school children have been released. "Our special appreciation goes to our dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for prioritizing the safety and security of Nigerians and particularly ensuring that the abducted Kuriga school children are released unharmed. While the school children were in captivity, I spoke with Mr. President several times. He shared our pains, comforted us and worked round the clock with us to ensure the safe return of the children. "Special mention must also be made of our dear brother, the National Security Adviser, Mal. Nuhu Ribadu for his exemplary leadership. I spent sleepless nights with Mal. Ribadu finetuning strategies and coordinating the operations of the security agencies, which eventually resulted in this successful outcome. “The Nigerian Army also deserves special commendation for showing that with courage, determination and commitment, criminal elements can be degraded and security restored in our communities. "We also thank all Nigerians who prayed fervently for the safe return of the school children. This is indeed a day of joy. We give Almighty Allah all the glory.” Bandits had invaded LEA Primary School Kuriga and Junior Secondary School, Kuriga town, in Chikun Local Government Area of the state around 8am on March 7 and abducted students including a principal, Abubakar Isah. Although it was initially reported that 287 schoolchildren were abducted, official sources told Daily Trust the actual number was 138 and one of the victims died in captivity. It was learnt that the remaining 137 victims released by bandits had been taken to hospitals for medical attention. The abduction, which happened immediately after the assembly briefing, caused uproar across the country. The abductors were reported to have demanding N1bn from the family to release the children, but both the state and federal governments insisted that no ransom would be paid. President Tinubu had urged the military and other security agencies to do whatever it takes to rescue the children. Daily Trust cannot immediately ascertain if a ransom was eventually paid or not. https://dailytrust.com/breaking-abducted-kuriga-schoolchildren-released/ |
