Devout Muslims in cities across the Middle East carried out a ritual of self-flagellation to mark the death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.
They mark Husayn's death at the Battle of Karbala, fought between Husayn and Yazid I on October 10 680AD to determine who should succeed the prophet as the leader of Islam.
Yazid is considered a tyrant by some Muslims, and Husayn's death is considered by the Shia community to be a symbol of humanity's struggle against injustice, tyranny, and oppression.
The act of lacerating themselves is seen as a way of cleaning themselves against sins they may have committed.
Pictures show men wincing in agony as they slice open the tops of their heads with knives and swords as blood streams down their white gowns.
In one picture from Iraq's southern city of Nasiriyah, a medic is seen tending to a man in a makeshift clinic.
The ritual, which is sometimes carried out on children, is controversial within the Muslim world, with some research suggesting it can cause lasting psychological damage.
Children in Lebanon were captured with blood on their foreheads after they were cut with a razor.
Another image shows a parent holding their child still as a man taps the razor on the little boy's forehead.
The anniversary is a national holiday in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Pakistan, and typically involves public expressions of mourning.
Many clerics also consider it to be self-harm, which is "haram" - forbidden - in Islam.
Worshippers are instead encouraged to donate blood, with some communities organising donation drives with organisations like the Red Cross.
Other rituals carried on Ashura include mourning processions, recitations of mournful poetry, and services in which the history of the Battle of Karbala is retold.
Last year the festival had notably fewer pilgrims than other years as the United Nations and authorities in Iraq and other Shia-majority countries urged people to celebrate the holiday at home due to the pandemic.
CHILLING CRIES: DESPERATE Afghan women screamed "the Taliban are coming" as they begged troops to save them through the fence at Kabul airport.
Women were filmed reaching their hands through iron railings towards American troops while screaming for help as Afghans face a new horror reality under the ruthless rule of the Taliban.
Taliban gunmen have now surrounded the airport - the only route out of the war-torn country for thousands of refugees and foreign nationals stranded in the capital and nearby provinces.
The militants have reportedly been funnelling people towards a gate on the south side of the airport and demanding documents before civilians can pass.
Shocking video footage also showed crowds pushed up against concrete walls on the airport's north side with shots being fired over the heads of men, women and children to keep them back.
General Sir Nick Carter, the UK's chief of the defence staff, said they are working with the Taliban to ensure people can leave - but he warned there are "a lot of challenges on the ground".
Last night, Taliban thugs reportedly attacked women and children with whips and sticks before firing their guns amid chaos at the airport.

AFGHAN RESETTLEMENT
It comes as around 20,000 Afghans will be flown to Britain to escape the Taliban in one of the biggest resettlements in our history.
The PM will vow to rescue women and girls in particular from the clutches of the fanatics.
He will vow to honour the "debt" the country owes the Afghan people by rescuing the most vulnerable.
The programme — one of the biggest of its kind in British history — will focus on giving asylum to women, girls and religious minorities fleeing persecution. It will run for five years, with 5,000 Afghans offered asylum this year alone.

Meanwhile, a Taliban leader declared their victory a "proud moment for the nation" yesterday and vowed to impose Sharia law on Afghanistan.
Zabihullah Mujahid appeared in public for the first time after 20 years in the shadows after the fanatics' stunning success in defeating the government.
Mujahid said the Taliban "are committed to the rights of women" - but added that would be "under the system of Sharia".
Many had doubted he even existed but in an extraordinary moment he took to the stage to say "after 20 years of struggle we have emancipated our country and expelled foreigners".

The hasty evacuation in Kabul came just months after the president promised the US would leave Afghanistan in a "safe and orderly way".
Media outlets in both the US and UK condemned Biden's address to the American people.
The Wall Street Journal described Biden’s speech as “one of the most shameful in history by a commander in chief”.
The outlet claimed a smaller US presence in the country could’ve “prevented the rout”.
The Sun said: “There has to be a better way to exit than this shambolic headlong retreat that sold millions of ordinary Afghans down the river and will haunt the West for decades, if not centuries, to come.”
Fox News presenter Will Cain called for Biden to resign as he described the address as a "masterclass in doublespeak".
Democratic Rep. and former Air Force veteran Chrissy Houlahan told CNN: "These past few days have been difficult to process, and not because the Taliban's progress was surprising.
"In fact, the opposite. We sounded the alarm, and our dire warnings fell on deaf ears."
Lawmakers accused Biden of trying to "blame others" as the president explained the decision to withdraw troops stemmed from a deal Trump negotiated with the Taliban.
Biden claimed he had two options - either to honor the agreement or to deploy American soldiers.
Rep. Elise Stefanik quipped: “Joe Biden tries to pass the buck. The American people will see him for what he is.
“A weak, feckless leader UNFIT to serve as the President of the United States.”
The Republican congresswoman called for Biden’s “speech-writers” to be fired.
Senator Lindsey Graham said: “The Biden speech was a pathetic attempt to shift blame and an unnerving analysis of the situation he – and he alone created."
Meanwhile, Ted Cruz said: “Joe Biden’s address was beyond disappointing. Instead of blaming others, Joe Biden owes the American people a real explanation of what went so wrong so fast in Afghanistan.”
The backlash came after Biden admitted that he was surprised by the speed of the Afghan government’s collapse.
He told Americans that “he stands squarely” behind his decision to withdraw troops and has no regrets.
Biden told the nation: “After 20 years, I've learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw US forces. We will end America's longest war after 20 long years of bloodshed.”
He blamed the outgoing Afghan administration, accusing leaders of “giving up without a fight”.
The president reiterated that American troops shouldn’t be fighting in a war “that Afghan forces are not willing to fight themselves”.
'BLAME GAME'
It comes as the president was accused of being "oblivious" to the terrorist threats the Taliban poses to the US.
Senator Graham told Newsweek: “It’s only a matter of time until al-Qaeda re-emerges in Afghanistan and presents a threat to the American homeland and western world.”

Former President Donald Trump called on Biden to "resign in disgrace" following the Taliban's advances as they took control of Afghanistan.
In a statement, he said: “It is time for Joe Biden to resign in disgrace for what he allowed to happen in Afghanistan, along with the tremendous surge in Covid, the border catastrophe, the destruction of energy independence, and our crippled economy."
Boris Johnson appeared to blame the US for the advancement of the Taliban in the country.
He said the "difficult" situation had been exacerbated by Biden's decision to withdraw troops from the war-torn country.
Thousands of people desperately stormed planes Monday in a bid to flee Taliban rule.
Video footage appears to show two people "falling to their deaths" after being thrown from a C-17 aircraft that had just taken off from Kabul airport.

Did Naftali Bennett just threaten to cancel the Messiah?
Israel’s Prime Minister called for all Israelis to get vaccinated but implicit in his words was a message that non-vaccination would postpone the Messiah.
At Sunday’s cabinet meeting Naftali Bennett discussed the current spike in the pandemic. He threatened a new shutdown, saying, “If we get vaccinated in Elul, we can hear the shofar in Tishrei.”
The Hebrew month of Elul began this week, marking a period of intensified repentance in preparation for the Jewish high holiday period in the month of Tishrei when the shofar (ram’s horn) is blown on Rosh Hashanna.
Bennett’s intention was clearly a warning that if there was not an increase in vaccinations, there would be a shutdown during the upcoming Jewish holidays. This threat is proving contentious as political and social pressure led the government to issue an exemption to synagogues under the newly instated Green Pass restrictions. The new restrictions that kicked in on Sunday limited gatherings of any size, indoors and out, to those who have been vaccinated, recovered from the virus, or who present a negative COVID test. While the plan originally included synagogues and other houses of worship, these were eventually exempted in prayer services with fewer than 50 participants. Many politicians were angered by the exemption.
Shofar of Messiah
Though Bennett probably did not make his statement with prophetic implications in mind, coming together to hear the shofar is not only the symbol of the Jewish New Year. The shofar also is an essential element of the final redemption of Israel, as stated explicitly by Isaiah as signaling the pre-Messiah ingathering of the exiles.
WALL OF FLAMES: THOUSANDS of people have been evacuated as "out of control" wildfires engulfed homes in the suburbs of Athens.
More than 500 firefighters were battling through the night as residents reportedly became trapped between walls of flames sparked by Greece's worst heatwave for 30 years.
Chaotic pictures show numerous cars and homes scorched as reports have emerged that some people have become trapped.
The main towns of Varympopi, Adames and Thrakomakedones have been the worst affected as authorities have grappled with a total of 81 forest fires.
Civil Protection chief Nikos Hardalias said the fires in the north of Athens was very dangerous and had been exacerbated by the heatwave - considered Greece’s worst in 30 years.
So far no severe injuries were reported as authorities confirmed several buildings had been damaged.
"We continue to fight hour by hour, with our top priority being to save human lives, Hardalias said. We will do so all night."
500 firefighters have battled the blaze and have been assisted by nine helicopters, seven aircraft and 305 police in the densely vegetated area, Reuters report.
They are currently believed to aiding a rescue mission amid reports residents, firefighters and policemen were trapped between two fronts in the worst affected areas.
The 100 emergency line has received at least 14 calls by residents asking for help.
As the wind dropped later on Tuesday, the regional governor for greater Athens, Giorgos Patoulis, said this could allow the fire to be tamed after water-dropping aircraft resume operations at first light Wednesday.
"If the winds don't grow it can be brought under control by the early morning so the planes can provide the final solution," he told state ERT TV.
Seven people have reportedly been taken to hospital with breathing problems.
Earlier, a total of 80 children were evacuated from a summer camp as residents fled local villages in towns while others stayed onto defend their houses with garden hoses.
The fire was so bad that equestrian clubs even let their horses loose to flee the fire.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has now visited a fire brigade operations centre coordinating efforts to contain the blaze and other fires.
"All available means and resources have been deployed in the fight on multiple fronts," his office said in a statement.
"In these difficult times, the priority is to protect human lives."
Meanwhile, a power grid operator in Athens said the fire had damaged parts of the grid, posing a major risk to the electricity supply in parts of the metropolitan region.
They issued several warnings as the fire also disrupted train services and forced authorities to seal off part of a national motorway.
The Greek Fire Service confirmed that it will now maintain an alert for most of the country throughout Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures continue to soar.
HELL ON EARTH : TOURISTS have been airlifted to safety and rescued by boat from popular Brit resorts near Marmaris as wildfires ravage Turkey - killing at least six people.
Frantic photos and videos reveal boats and helicopters rescuing people from beaches in the harrowing scenes as flames raged across the hillside.
The infernos come after a severe heatwave has blasted southern Europe - with temperatures rising above 40C.
Wildfires have also broken out in nearby Greece and Italy, but Turkey has been hit hard with nearly 235,000 acres burned.
More than 330 people have received medical treatment as the flames were worsened by strong winds.
Roads have also been cut off by flames as residents have had to be either airlifted to safety or picked up by boat from the beaches.
Turkey has deployed two navy landing craft to evacuate people from Turunc.
Videos show helicopters appearing to collect evacuees as smoke billowed over the hills near Marmaris.
Other clips showed almost unbelievable scenes as people standing on the coast were left hemmed in by wildfires as they tried to flee.
Incredible photos have shown fires in the hills around popular tourist resorts as the infernos threatened even more devastation.
And another video showed residents waiting on a beach, the skies orange and full of smoke, as they were loaded onto waiting inflatable ribs to escape the flames.
While yesterday a heart stopping clip emerged showing a group of friends in a car being hemmed in by flames as they desperately tried to escape.
Three five star hotels in the city of Bodrum were evacuated by the Turkish Coastguard - along with help from private boats and yachts.
Dozens of villages were also evacuated as the fires entered their fifth day.
Four people have died and more than 180 injured as thousands of firefighters battled huge blazes spreading across the Mediterranean resort regions of Turkey's southern coast.
Officials also launched an investigation into suspicions that the fires that broke out Wednesday in four locations to the east of the tourist hotspot Antalya were the result of arson.
The fires first emerged across a sparsely populated region about 45 miles east of Antalya - a resort especially popular with Russian and other eastern European tourists.
But they are now creeping closer to sandy beaches dotted with hotels and resorts.
Images on social media and Turkish TV showed residents jumping out of their cars and running for their lives through smoke-filled streets lit up by orange flames.
The heavy clouds of smoke turned the sky dark orange over a beachfront hotel complex in the town of Manavgat.

They rescued 10 people on Thursday who were stranded on a boat in a lake that was surrounded by burning forest.
'All of the state's means have been mobilised,' Environment Minister Murat Kurum said. 'All our teams are in the field.'
Harrowing footage captured in northern India shows the moment when a landslide sent deadly boulders crashing down onto an iron bridge, killing nine tourists and injuring many more.
The disastrous incident happened in Batseri, a village in the Sangla valley of Himachal Pradesh state on Sunday. A landslide on one of the valley’s slopes sent massive, car-sized boulders tumbling down onto a bridge spanning a river below.
Video recorded by one witness shows the landslide rushing down the opposite slope of the valley. Several people can be heard whistling and shouting words of warning as the dusty disaster comes surging down the hill over the course of a few seconds.
Boulders come tumbling down the slope at the head of the landslide, crashing over a sharp cliff and smashing into buildings, cars and the bridge below. One particularly large boulder hits an outcrop and flies through the air before taking out the corner of a building.
The person filming the video watches from inside a building as the dust sweeps over the opposite shore, obscuring the damage caused by the boulders. A large boulder flies out of the cloud at one point and strikes near the centre of the bridge, breaking it in two and dropping it into the river.
Nine Indian tourists were killed in the landslide when a boulder struck their vehicle, local authorities said. The bodies have since been recovered, Kinnaur police Supt. Sarju Ram Rana told the Hindustan Times.

Christopher Harley, professor of zoology at the University of British Columbia, discovered thousands of dead mussels, clams, sea stars and snails along the Salish Sea coastline and calculated that there are likely millions more across the country.
Temperatures in western Canada soared to record highs in late June and early July, sparking wildfires and killing hundreds of people, primarily in British Columbia.
Harley’s team recorded temperatures above 50C at certain points amid the animals’ habitats along the coast using infrared cameras, which proved disastrous for the creatures.
The team, made up of student researchers, canvassed multiple coastlines including those in West Vancouver and on the Sunshine Coast, helping Harley to calculate the scale of the wipe out.
(CNN) There are some new faces on "Sesame Street" and they're bringing a new layer of diversity to the decades-old children's show.
The show dropped its Family Day episode Thursday on HBO Max (which, like CNN, is owned by WarnerMedia) and YouTube. The episode featured a family with two gay dads.
On the episode, Nina introduces her brother and his husband, played by Chris Costa and Alex Weisman, as well as their daughter, played by Olivia Perez, to Elmo and his friends as they celebrate Family Day.
The milestone for the show comes during Pride Month, which Alan Muraoka, known as Alan on "Sesame Street," acknowledged in a Facebook post.
"Sesame Street has always been a welcoming place of diversity and inclusion. So I'm so excited to introduce Nina's Brother Dave, his husband Frank, and their daughter Mia to our sunny street," Muraoka, who co-directed the episode, wrote. "Love is love, and we are so happy to add this special family to our Sesame family."
LGBTQ advocates celebrated the inclusion.
"The 'Family Day' episode of Sesame Street sends the simple and important message that families come in all forms and that love and acceptance are always the most important ingredients in a family," GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis tweeted.
"Sesame Street" has throughout the years introduced diverse characters and tackled issues such as hunger and addiction.

UFOs Repeatedly 'Took Offline' US Nuclear Capabilities, Ex-Chief of Pentagon Secret Unit Says
Unidentified flying objects (UFO) have repeatedly meddled with US nuclear technology, forcing some facilities to go offline, ex-head of Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, Luis Elizondo, told The Washington Post.
The revelation comes ahead of the release of an unclassified report on unidentified aerial phenomenons (UAPs) observed by US Navy pilots, which is expected to be submitted to Congress later in June.
"Now in this country we’ve had incidents where these UAPs have interfered and actually brought offline our nuclear capabilities," Elizondo said in an interview.
While some may deem the incidents to be "something that is peaceful," there is data suggesting that UFOs have meddled with other countries' nuclear technology and "actually turned them on, put them online," the expert said.
"I think that there is certainly at this point enough data to demonstrate there is an interest in our nuclear technology, a potential to even interfere with that nuclear technology," Elizondo said, noting there is nothing surprising about a possible increased interest in US capabilities related to its nuclear technology.
Commenting on the upcoming report, the expert said that it "definitively stated once and for all" that UAPs were not US technology, neither was it Russian or Chinese technology.

Armed assailants killed around 100 civilians in an overnight attack on a village in northern Burkina Faso, the government said on Saturday.
The attackers struck during the night on Friday, killing residents of the village of Solhan in Yagha province bordering Niger. They also burned homes and the market, the government said in a statement.
The government described the attackers as terrorists but no group claimed responsibility.
Attacks by jihadists linked to al Qaeda and the Islamic State in West Africa's Sahel region have risen sharply since the start of the year, particularly in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, with civilians bearing the brunt. The government declared a 72-hour period of national mourning. It said the provisional toll put the number of people killed at around 100.
The violence in Burkina Faso has displaced more than 1.14 million people in just over two years, while the poor arid country is also hosting some 20,000 refugees from neighboring Mali who are seeking safety from jihadist attacks.
