Firstly, let me state that your questionnaire was structured and easy to answer, I also love the topic, it is intelligent albeit futuristic for Nigeria. I completed the questionnaire even though i am in the States. I encourage everyone on this thread/ food section to complete the questionnaire irrespective of location.

It is imperative to note that issues bothered on food/health have severe cultural implications in Nigeria and Africa in extension, especially if commercialization of the product is possible. The bulk of the farmers that produce food crops that support the exploding population in Nigeria reside permanently in the rural areas. Their occupation is guided by cultural beliefs, If commercialization of genetically modified food crops is the goal, the funding agency would have to educate our farmers on the viability of this technology with hopes it is not contradictory to their cultural/ religious belief's.

Secondly, the process involves intensive local research which much be sustainably funded by the government/ private sector. we are not speaking 1-5 years research, we are speaking of 10 years worth of extensive research on "local" food crops.

Genetically modified cultivation of crops requires administrative discipline especially in maintaining stringent regulations that guide the process of modification, Sadly, our dear country is renowned for administrative lapses. Government would have to invest heavily on NAFDAC and other regulating agencies to ensure adherence. The possible effects of non compliance to regulations are devastating, ranging from poisoning, development of new diseases.

I believe the technology would be beneficial for Nigeria especially with well over 200 Million people to feed, however, we have to start now.

Thank you. Feeling quiet encouraged. A lot is going on in the country and I think people are still not aware that earlier than later these crops will be on our tables. We have to be informed and prepared. And be willing to make the choice between GMOs and non GMOs if need be. Most concerns can be attributed to our perspective on genetic modification. This I want to know from people's responses.
