Good morning house!
I bet you'd rather people feed you with false hopes than prepare you for the worst. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I know it's quite frustrating being home when others from different schools are wearing the uniform. But dispel the notion that your destiny hinges on mobilisation for the next batch. We, and by we I mean Nigerians, are apt and eager to digest and embrace good news however implausible and with questionable logic. Information, whether good or bad, enlighten, prepare and strengthen us for any impending outcome. I sincerely pray November will bring good news for us OAU peeps but we need as much information as we can get. I was at DSA yesterday and a staff told me in no uncertain terms what to expect and to pray for, which I tried to convey. I understand your frustration with the whole saga but your destiny isn't in their hands. At least I know mine isn't. Let's just continue to pray. That's the least we can do.
NYSCRe: NYSC 2013 Batch C Corp Members House by Graham123: 10:44am On Aug 14, 2013
For OAU peeps, of which I am included, the ONLY prayer is for ASUU to call off the strike as soon as possible. Bar that, there's no chance of mobilisation for batch C, unless of course your results have been approved by the senate. Heard this from good authority. And the strike has to be called off before at most two weeks time to allow the DSA and senate to sort out the proper documents required for nysc mobilisation in time to meet up with nysc timetable. It's not 50-50 to be honest. I wouldn't place a percentage on it but the chances are gloomy. I don't mean to dampen your moods but to rather prepare you. However, there is still every chance of making November. Prayers are needed.

Oh! My results have been approved since last year. In fact, my name was in the convocation list last year. I however paid for JAMB reg no around May as I came in through pre-degree. Department's Zoology. Thanks

Any news from OAU, Great Ife?

imperiouxx: Saw this late. First of all, you id reminds me of my sec. sch chem about Graham's Law of diffusion and effusion which states that the rate of diffusion or effusion for a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of the molar mass of the gas r ∝ 1/(M)½

Back to the issue. It would be better if you write the department stating your low CGPA as directed by others. Though, I doubt if sciences will welcome such request but who are we to confidently say it's impossible? No hope is lost, so writing them can open your eyes to what you don't know exists.

PS: Don't think about high ranked schools or the like of VIU. Consider some privates but know fully well that you're going to pay much to achieve your dreams.

Best of luck!
Thanks, will do.

FutureDon: In addition to Profs Ojap & GboyegaD's words. I would advise that you engage in a serious ''moment of truth'' and make up your mind on what you really want to do, since you mentioned that you intend changing from Zoology to any other science-oriented course.

You also mentioned that you are preparing for GRE and would like to make a switch to Nursing, I don't see any correlation here. I would like to think that you are not looking at MSc Nursing programs (pardon me). If you really want to switch to Nursing, I think the better way to go about it is through undergraduate route. However, in my honest opinion, it is difficult to get into a DECENT MS program with your GPA but not impossible. GPA is just one component of admission requirement.

A lady on this forum (many pages back) highlighted how someone with a 3rd class took some undergraduate courses (to make up for his deficient GPA) before proceeding to MS at the same Uni in America. You can also look into this route; however you will have to contact each university of choice to ask if possibility abounds for such 'route' at that particular institution.

My 4 naira sir.
Thanks so much. I'm on it.

[quote author=imperiouxx]Hi Imperiouxx, you seem to be in-the-know and quite conversant with most things relating to this thread. Please, can you address my question if you have a little knowledge of that situation?

babsharon: is like Ojap was trying to pin point certain fact to you likewise GboyegaD?
Yeah, they were actually but I reckon they are a bit busy now or currently unavailable. Perhaps someone online presently can address my issue hence the reason why I had to post the question again.

Please, I'll like to know if I can get a post graduate program admission in any college in the US with a third class honors degree equivalent of below 2.5CGPA (precisely 2.32 in my case, pathetic I know). My degree program was in Zoology (OAU). I'd like to know my chances, if any. I want honest answers however discouraging they may be, so far it is the truth. Not replies to stroke my ego or console my situation as that won't help. What are my available altervatives to study a graduate course in the US. UK is out of the question due to their relatively expensive tuition and living costs. Looking forward to replies from you guys.

GboyegaD: You could read through some of the earlier pages and you would read the experience of at least one person.
That's a damn lot...I'm on it tho'
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by Graham123: 9:12am On Jul 19, 2013
GboyegaD: Most schools will give you that option. Just write to them and they sure will respond and tell you how to go about it.
Sounds good. Just that I wouldn't want to be on a wild goose chase is why I asked if you know someone who has been through that before.

GboyegaD: Your chances of getting directly into a Masters program is very slim however, some schools might give you an option to take some undergraduate hours to meet up for the Masters program which I can tell you isn't a bad idea.
Thanks Gboyega, any idea of such schools that offer the option you mentioned above and do you know anybody in similar situation as mine that has gone through that route? Google isn't helping really; a freaking lot of skewed search results. Nairaland have been a breath of fresh air by the way. More suggestions needed from people please.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by Graham123: 10:12pm On Jul 18, 2013
OjaP: We can always discuss it here so others can learn from it too. I am open to talking privately too only if you have some private info you don't want to disclose in public. You know where and how to find me.
Okay then, you made a good point. Any suggestion about schools where I have a shot? I'm studying intensely for the GRE so I can ace it, maybe it will strengthen my application, yes?
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by Graham123: 9:59pm On Jul 18, 2013
OjaP: Don't stress it, you will get an admission. First, send your transcript to WES for conversion. You should still be able to get a WES GPA within the range of 2.4 - 2.5. There are schools that will give you a "conditional" admission with that. If you have good grades in your senior years or 300-400L, then you should have a 2.5 GPA when converted. Most of the classes you take in your 100 and 200L carry lesser credit units.

Again, what field are you switching to? Answer this and we will go from there.
Sounds good, thanks. I'm thinking of Nursing actually but I'm still open to further options. With a bit more research and advice, I will make a decision soon.
Perhaps you can be of more help if we move this discussion to a private quarter, only if you are willing to.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by Graham123: 9:36pm On Jul 18, 2013
OjaP: @ Graham

I have two questions for you.

- How do you know your third class is less than 2.5 US GPA?

- Are you coming here for MS in Zoology or planning to change field?

I won't advise you to come here and study Zoology unless you want to go further to PhD and be a professor. You may want to change your field entirely to what you think can sell in the US. That said, be warned that you may not get any scholarship or funding except a campus job if you are lucky.
Thanks, you have been really helpful to start with. I stated earlier that my CGPA is 2.3 but I haven't converted through WES to the US equivalent although I strongly doubt if it will be above US 2.5 CGPA.
I actually intend changing to a better, more lucrative program if permitted but having a career as a professor wouldn't be entirely discarded either.
I just want to know my chances of getting an admission with the third class. Funding and scholarship shouldn't be a problem as I have adequate provision for expenses. Suggestions of likely colleges, if any, to accept me will be appreciated.

You guys have been really helpful so far. I'm not exactly looking for an Ivy league school, neither would I go for those colleges that are barely accredited. Although I'm quite aware beggars can't be choosers, but I'd much rather prefer an accredited college even if of lower rank. I intend to pursue an M.Sc in zoology or other related courses such as evironmental biology. Any idea of such state/public colleges with that slim shot of admission with my CGPA?
