Politics › Oduah To Appear Before Senate Committee Dec. 5 by gratiaeo(op): 5:06am On Nov 28, 2013
BY SUNDAY ABORISADE
Mrs. Stella Oduah The Senate Committee on Aviation on Wednesday formally  invited the embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, to appear before it on Thursday, December 5, by noon. A letter of invitation signed by the Clerk of the committee,  Mr. Victor Aborisade, and obtained by our correspondent explained that Oduah and the chief executive officers of agencies under her ministry would brief members at the Senate New wing. The Chairman, Aviation Committee in the Senate, Senator Hope Uzodinma,  could not be reached for comments but a member of the committee,  who pleaded anonymity,  confirmed to our correspondent that the minister would appear next week Thursday. The source said, “The matter has not been swept under the carpet. The minister will definitely be here next week Thursday. She has been duly invited alongside heads of agencies under her supervision.” The Senate had two weeks ago, rescinded its resolution to summon Oduah, to brief its members on the state of the aviation sector. The senators consequently resolved that Oduah and the chief executive officers of agencies under her ministry should now appear before the committee on aviation over the issue. The Senate leader, Senator Victor Ndoma – Egba,  who moved the motion, said the action was based on the Senate standing order 53 (6) which empowered it to reverse its decision. He also added that the decision to invite Oduah was taken at the executive committee meeting of the Senate last week. Senator Ganiyu Solomon, who seconded the motion, confirmed that “indeed, at the executive session last week, the senators were unanimous in the decision that the resolution should be rescinded and that the minister should rather face the aviation committee.”

Politics › Joining APC Is To Protect Rivers People –amaechi by gratiaeo(op): 5:31pm On Nov 27, 2013
The Rivers State Governor and Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has said he joined the All Progressives Congress in order to protect the people of the state. Amaechi also said the state had suffered neglect under the Goodluck Jonathan administration, adding that one of the reasons he joined the APC was because the issues raised by the seven aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party were not resolved by the President and the PDP. The governor, who spoke with newsmen at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Tuesday, described the decision to join the opposition party as good for the country’s democracy. He explained that the PDP had given the impression that they (G-7 governors) were begging to come back to the ruling party, maintaining that the issues that led to the crisis in the PDP were not resolved. “Yes, we have joined APC after the meeting we had with Buhari, Tinubu and the interim Chairman of APC. The governors met on Monday and decided that we must meet with the APC leadership. “When we met with the APC leadership, it was important we took a position and the position we took is for the good of our democracy and ensure that Nigeria moves forward. “Rivers State must know that for me to have taken that decision, I had looked at the general interests of Rivers people. I was not elected to lead Nigeria; I was elected to lead Rivers State and I had looked at the interests of Rivers people and have seen that these interests were not protected in PDP.”

Politics › Defection Of G7 Govs: Hope Has Been Rekindled – Peterside, Others by gratiaeo(op): 9:19am On Nov 27, 2013
YESTERDAY’S decamping of most G-7 governors and members of the new Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP)  to the All Peoples Congress (APC) elicited mixed reactions in the polity. Lagos-based lawyer, Professor Itse Sagay, said the movement of the G-7 governors to APC is not a loss to the PDP, adding that the movement of the rebel governors who are nursing a personal agenda, into APC may amount to inviting trouble into the APC. Sagay also berated the northern governors, saying while the APC was preoccupied with salvaging Nigeria from years of misrule, the motive of the northern governors is principally for power to return to the north. “Concerning the Northern governors decamping to the APC, I really don’t think it is a loss to the PDP. If you look at these rebel governors, with the exclusion of Rotimi Amaechi, you will find out that their agenda is a very narrow agenda, a very personal one. And that agenda is for the North to produce the president so that a Northerner can control the Niger Delta oil and Lagos State VAT and so on. Some of the faces at the merger includes Ogbonaya Onu, nPDP chairman, Kawu Baraje, Senator Bukola Saraki, Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu, chair of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, In his own reaction, Bamidele Aturu said the primary motive of the gladiators in the present arrangement is to feather their nests and not to advance the cause of Nigerians. The human rights activist said the movement of the rebel governors to the APC had proved to Nigerians that there is no clear-cut difference between the political parties in Nigeria. They’ve taken a gamble – Babatope Former Minister of Transport, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, wished the defectors luck, saying: “Now that they have announced it, I wish those from the PDP going to join the APC the very best of luck. They have taken a gamble and I hope they are ready to face the consequences of that gamble. No rebellion of any group within an established political party has ever succeeded either in Nigeria or even abroad. “But in their case, well, they have taken a gamble and like I said they must face the consequence of that gamble. We have no fear about the APC because the APC is not yet a party. But we will remain with the Nigerian people, PDP will never desert the Nigerian people. So, we shall meet on the political battle field, that is why I said we wish them the best of luck.” Merger took Oni by surprise For former governor of EkitiState, Segun Oni, who was with the nPDP, Vanguard gathered that the news of the merger came to him as a surprise. A source close to him told Vanguard that “as it stands now, he got the news like every other person. He is studying the situation as events unfold and he will have to consult with his supporters at home before taking any decision. It’s better we know our enemies —Doherty Coordinator of the PDP in the South-West, Mr Deji Doherty, said the defectors took an honourable decision. In a telephone chat with Vanguard, he said:  “It is better we know our enemies than our enemies being in the same party with us. It is an honourable decision and I believe we still have more people in the PDP that are APC at night and PDP during the day. It will be honourable for them to come out and choose a party that they can be loyal to. So, if Olagunsoye Oyinlola believes that he can be more loyal to the APC, it is his fundamental human right to choose whichever political party he wants to be.” Their exit should be celebrated — Maeba In his submission, former Senator representing Rivers South East in the National Assembly, Hon Lee Maeba said PDP members worldwide should celebrate the exit of the blacklegs. According to him, “INEC should declare their seats vacant since the constitution says you can only decamp to another party if the party that brought you to power is factional.” ’The court had declared PDP not factional, so fresh elections should be conducted in the affected states.” Hope has been rekindled — Peterside A member of the House of Representatives and Chairman House Committee on Oil and Gas, (Downstream), Hon Dakuku Peterside, in his submission said the development is a watershed in the country’s democratic journey and hope has been rekindled. “The beneficiaries of this merger are the Nigerian people, democracy and democratic culture. The political and democratic institutions can never be the same again and our democratic institution will be strengthened by implication. Never again will we the people be taken for granted,”.he said. PDP should go to Court — Opara Commenting on the move, former deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Austin Opara, advised the PDP to go to court over the merger. “On the defection of the PDP governors to the APC, this is democracy and membership of a party is a voluntary affair, you don’t force anybody to remain in any party but the implication for our democracy is what I am concerned about. The National Assembly members that defected to the APC, their seat should be declared vacant according to the position of the Constitution. For the PDP governors that also defected to the APC, I think the PDP should also go to Court to challenge it because of future occurrence. We should all remember the Amaechi saga in RiversState when the Supreme Court declared that it is the party that contests elections not individuals. So if the party that contests election and you abandon the same party by which you contested election, you have no basis to be governor. So I urge the PDP to challenge the defections to further entrench our democracy.” It’s good for our democracy—Ogunlewe A former Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, said the merger will afford Nigerians opportunity to choose from the best. Ogunlewe said: “It is in two parts: the first one is that it is good for our democracy because there will be a very strong opposition now to the PDP. It will afford people to choose. What is good now for the two political parties is to bring out their manifesto, let the people assess them and then, let us see the one people will choose. Secondly, it is for those decamping governors to hold on to their supporters because their supporters will have to compete with the people they have known to be in the opposition. They may get there and their host may be hostile to them after they decamp because you can never out smart the people you are meeting there. They may not accept them because they also want to survive. Some of the governors cannot contest again because they are outgoing governors and so, in another six months, they will be irrelevant. The third aspect is for the PDP itself to re-arrange and order their priorities, know what the people want and do a lot for the people so that when elections come, they will be the favourite. It is also a freedom of choice, if it is going to bring out the best of Nigeria, then let it be.”

I have been saying and singing this like a song or a broken record: Ayatollah Alhaji Aregbesola is not only a boko haram-wannabe, but a religious bigot who is intent on turning Osun into the 13th sharia state in the South by his islamization policies in Osun such as mixing a Boys Christian Baptist school with hijab-wearing islamic girls. This boko haram governor should also send skimpy dressing non-moslem girls to islamic aljimiri schools in Osun. Will Aregbesola allow mini skirt-wearing non-moslem girls in his mosque as a sign of religious tolorence?
what business does a masquerade looking girl have in a Baptist school, Aregbesola should start building almajiri schools for them. Yorubaland has never had religious tension until APC came along. A stitch in time saves 9. From the day I saw Tinubu come out and openly to campaign for boko haram amnesty I knew that there is something evil about APC. Yorubas should learn from what Egyptians have done to their Islamist party, out-rightly banned. Boko haram are hardcore supporters of Buhari, very soon hardcore supporters of Aregbesola will emerge in Osun.[/b]
Politics › Police Quiz Vice Principal, Student Over Osun School Attack by gratiaeo(op): 6:02am On Nov 27, 2013
BY FEMI MAKINDE
Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Dorothy Gimba Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mrs. Dorothy Gimba, on Tuesday interrogated the Vice Principal of Baptist High School, Ejigbo, and a female student of the school over Monday’s attack by some Muslim youths. Some youths had attacked the school on Monday and injured the Principal, Mr. Layi Oguntola, based on the allegation that the principal turned back some Muslim female students of the school for wearing hijab on their uniforms. A police source told journalists that the CP invited the female student and the VP of the school to the state police headquarters, Osogbo, on Tuesday afternoon. The source said that the CP interrogated the two and were allowed to go after the session. The source said, “The female student who was said to have been sent away from the school for wearing hijab was invited. The Vice Principal of the school also came and some religious leaders came with their lawyer. “The girl and the vice principal were asked some questions and after that they were allowed to go.” The source added that one person had also been arrested in connection with the attack. Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has appealed to the people of the state not to read any religious meaning to the school reclassification embarked upon by his administration. Osun State  Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Wale Bolorunduro, who spoke in an interview with our correspondent on the development, said that the governor was not happy with the incident. He said, “All parties affected in this matter should be tolerant. That is the bottom line. We are one in the state and we should not allow anything to divide us. “The governor means well with the reclassification. It was aimed at reforming the education sector, which was in rot before he assumed office. There was no religious undertone to it as some are claiming.”

Sports › Manchester City To Sign Kelechi Iheanacho by gratiaeo(op): 2:54pm On Nov 26, 2013
Nigerian wonderkid Kelechi Iheanacho will sign a deal with Manchester City, according to the player's father. Iheanacho was named the best player at November's Under-17s World Cup after scoring six goals, including one in the final, as his country triumphed in the United Arab Emirates. MAN CITY LATEST 9/1Manchester City are 9/1 with PaddyPower to beat Viktoria Plzen 4-0 He has since been linked in his homeland with moves to Porto and Chelsea but his father, James, claims that the Etihad Stadium will be his next destination. "As I am talking to you, I have chosen in my mind that Kelechi is going to Manchester United," he told SuperSport's 'Monday Night Football', before appearing to correct himself by saying: "I have told you that he is going to Manchester City." Iheanacho senior later confirmed to MTNFootball.com that the player's family made a joint decision on where he would go in a meeting on Monday night. "We prayed [on Monday] and, after due consultations with family members, we came up with Manchester City, believing he has a future there," he explained. "That is where he will be uplifted." The young striker had been declared missing by his father on Friday after he had left his home in Owerri without alerting his family but returned early on Monday morning before a decision on his future was made. James has been integral in his son's fledgling career, with rumours that he had valued the starlet at €1 million (£840,000), though he denied those claims, declaring: "No, those people are my enemies. I never said that."
