Sports / City Of Leverkusen Grants Victor Boniface, Tella Honorary Citizenship by Great100000: 9:04am On Apr 17 |
The town hall of the city of Leverkusen has granted honorary citizenship to Victor Boniface, Nathan Tella and the rest of the historic Bundesliga champions. On Sunday, Bayer Leverkusen won their first-ever Bundesliga championship after they dismantled Werder Bremen 5-0 with Victor Boniface scoring the opening goal and also making an assist. Victor Boniface carries a Nigerian passport, while Tella besides his green passport also has a British passport as he was born to Nigerian parents in England. The city is also exploring the possibilities of naming a street after coach Xabi Alonso. This was after a joke by the supporters Sunday when they came up with “Xabi-Alonso-Alle” to one of the roads leading to the BayArena. However, there is a standing rule that streets in the city are not named after people. https://scorenigeria.com.ng/city-of-leverkusen-grants-victor-boniface-tella-honorary-citizenship/

Sports / Nicky Salapu: The Keeper Who Conceded 31 Goals In A Game by Great100000: 9:48am On Apr 16 |
Listen to American Samoa goalkeeper Nicky Salapu's interview for the Sporting Witness podcast on BBC Sounds. Imagine your worst day at work and then multiply it by 31. You may get close to what Nicky Salapu experienced on 11 April 2001. That was the day the American Samoa goalkeeper was on the losing side during the heaviest loss in international football history. Salapu told the Sporting Witness podcast that strangers still approach him to ask about the extraordinary contest. The occasion was a World Cup qualifier with Australia. Fielding a hastily cobbled together team full of teenagers, American Samoa went on to ship 31 goals without reply. Salapu, now 43, says he had to hide tears from his team-mates in the 31-0 defeat. "I was trying to keep all that emotion in to wait until the game is over," he says. There were plenty of mitigating factors in such a heavy loss. For a start, American Samoa's population at the time was only 58,000, compared to Australia's 19 million. The minnows had been admitted entry to Fifa only three years earlier. On top of that, before qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup, Fifa stipulated that only players with an American passport would be allowed to represent the Pacific Island nation. Out of a squad of 20 players, Salapu was the only one who was eligible. What followed was a desperate scramble to assemble a squad. "We had to find anyone in two weeks," he explains. "We ended up selecting kids from high school." With three 15-year-olds in their side and an average age of just 18, 20-year-old Salapu was a relative veteran. Unsurprisingly, the team of novices got off to a bad start in their qualifying campaign, following up a 13-0 loss to Fiji with an 8-0 loss to Samoa. When they lost by a meagre 5-0 to Tonga in their third group game, it must have felt like a relative success. Meanwhile, having narrowly missed out on qualification for the 1998 World Cup, Australia had a point to prove. The Socceroos came into their final group game against American Samoa having just punished Tonga 22-0. Salapu says his primary ambition before the match was to "not pass the 22-0" mark. It took eight minutes for Con Boutsianis to score Australia's first goal. Three minutes later Archie Thompson netted. By 27 minutes the 22-year-old, who had made two other appearances for his country, had scored a hat-trick. At the 75-minute mark he had notched up 13. David Zdrilic helped himself to eight goals, while Boutsianis scored a hat-trick. Salapu says he spent the match urging his team-mates "to go forward" rather than "bundling" in front of him, because he found it hard to see the ball at times. American Samoa's one and only attack of the match occurred in the 86th minute, when they forced Australia goalkeeper Michael Petkovic to make a save. Salapu says he thinks the Socceroos' approach was unsporting. "How many goals do you need to have the differential?" he asks. If he were coaching Australia that day, he says he would have told his team to "keep possession until the game is over" when they had scored 20 times. Salapu had to wait 10 years before he could in any way expunge the memory of that humiliation. By this stage, American Samoa had racked up 38 consecutive defeats and a goal difference of minus 217. They were placed 204 in the Fifa rankings, sharing bottom spot with Andorra, Montserrat, Samoa and San Marino. However, the team had just appointed Dutchman Thomas Rongen as manager and Salapu felt confident enough in the project to come out of retirement. One of Rongen's innovations was to change formation from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1, providing better defensive cover. On 23 November 2011 American Samoa faced Tonga in their first qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup. Salapu says: "Our whole team was positive that we were going to win." Just before half-time Tonga keeper Shalom Luanio bundled a shot from Ramin Ott into his own net. In the 74th minute Kaneti Falela lobbed the ball over Luanio and scored American Samoa's second. "I was so happy and I was like, 'I have to keep that emotion in because I have to focus in the game'," remembers Salapu. Tonga got one back in the 87th minute, but it was not enough. The game finished 2-1 and American Samoa could finally enjoy their first Fifa-recognised victory. A decade after that humiliation against Australia, Salapu had his redemptive moment. "That was the first time I ever cried in soccer since 2001 against Australia," he says. Rongen's achievement with American Samoa is chronicled in a 2023 Taika Waititi film Next Goal Wins, where the coach is played by Michael Fassbender. Salapu still plays for the national side and son Dylan plays for the Under-17s as a midfielder. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68761702

Sports / Victor Osimhen Told Me I Will Win The Bundesliga – Declares Victor Boniface by Great100000: 11:27pm On Apr 15 |
Victor Boniface opened the scoring in a 5-nil victory against Werder Bremen which crowned Bayer Leverkusen the 2023-24 Bundesliga winners German Bundesliga champion, Victor Boniface, has revealed that his compatriot, Victor Osimhen, told him he was going to win the league, Soccernet.ng reports. Osimhen, under the guidance of Luciano Spalletti, helped Napoli secure the Serie A league title after 33 years, sparking celebrations all over the world, especially in Nigeria, who were proud of their Nigerian player. Having won the Italian Serie A, Boniface revealed to Soccernet.ng that his countryman foresaw him leading a title-winning campaign with his team, which eventually became true. Leverkusen, after their thrashing of Werder Bremen, thanks to goals from Boniface, Granit Xhaka, and a hat trick from Florian Witz, sealed their first Bundesliga trophy for the Bay Arena outfit. Meanwhile, Leverkusen had finished as Bundesliga runners-up on five occasions in the past, with the most famous of their failures coming during the 2001/02 season when, odds on to win the title, they took just one win from their final four games and saw Bayern Munich steam in to claim the trophy by a point. “Like I said, it’s really good, you know. From the start of the season, we knew what we wanted and we were determined. [And] if you see when we [are] leading 3-0, we still fight to score more. So, I feel proud, I feel blessed to achieve this. “Bayern [Munich] everybody knows they’ve been a top club for a [very] long time. But, they have something missing, but we got this from them. So I am really excited,” says Boniface to Soccernet.ng Managing Editor, Lolade Adewuyi. Alonso’s troops have just won one out of the three titles they are aiming for as they are in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League and the final of the DFB Pokal. Boniface, in further conversation with Soccernet’s Adewuyi, revealed that this treble title challenge is still a sole aim for the team, and the celebration is not stopping yet as they aim bigger for the season end. “Of course, we have two [more] important trophies we are aiming at. We are in the DFB-Pokal Cup final, and we are also in the [UEFA] Europa League quarter-finals. So it doesn’t stop here. So we have to push hard. We know we won the league, it’s a big achievement for us. But we also have two things [trophies] we are aiming at. So if we can have the perfect three, of course we will celebrate more,” he continued. Boniface was among the players who called in to celebrate Osimhen following his Scudetto Victory, not knowing his own would be coming so soon. “Shout out to [Victor] Osimhen because I remember when they [Napoli] won the league. He told me next year will be your turn and it’s happening now. Senior man respect,” he concluded with Soccernet.ng. The Nigerian attacker made an assist and scored a goal in today’s game against Werder Bremen, and will be hoping to continue from where he left off in their Europa League quarter-final second-leg clash against West Ham in Germany. https://soccernet.ng/2024/04/victor-osimhen-told-me-i-will-win-the-bundesliga-declares-victor-boniface.html

Sports / Chelsea Miss Out On Victor Osimhen As PSG Near Agreement To Sign Him For €120m by Great100000: 1:59pm On Apr 11 |
Chelsea miss out on Victor Osimhen as PSG near agreement to sign €120m Napoli sensation. In a blow to Chelsea's transfer plans, Napoli's Victor Osimhen is reportedly close to joining Paris Saint-Germain for €120 million (£103m/$129m). WHAT HAPPENED? Osimhen has been on the radar of several top clubs across Europe since his pivotal role in Napoli's Serie A triumph last season. Despite a slight dip in form in recent months, Osimhen remains highly regarded as one of the premier strikers in world football. THE BIGGER PICTURE According to reports from Italian outlet Il Mattino, negotiations between Napoli and PSG are reaching an advanced stage, indicating Osimhen's imminent transfer to the French capital. PSG are reportedly eager to secure his services swiftly, aiming to outmanoeuvre competitors like Chelsea in the race for his signature. The French side are ready to meet Osimhen's €120m release clause and offer him an enticing four-year contract worth €13m (£11m/$14m) per season. DISAPPOINTMENT FOR CHELSEA For Chelsea, Osimhen was the primary target to bolster their attacking lineup. However, their financial constraints and the urgent need to comply with the Premier League's Profit & Sustainability Regulations (PSR) forced them to pull out of the race. WHAT NEXT? In light of the likely setback in their pursuit of Osimhen, Chelsea must turn their attention to alternative targets to address their need for a world-class number nine. Among the names being considered are RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, Brentford's Ivan Toney, Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface, and Sporting CP hitman Viktor Gyokeres. With Christopher Nkunku still struggling with fitness issues and Nicolas Jackson yet to discover his goalscoring prowess, the Blues have grown adamant about signing a forward to solve their problems in front of goal. https://www.goal.com/en-ng/lists/chelsea-miss-victor-osimhen-psg-near-agreement-eur120m-napoli/blt4068c626b2a5c969#cs4809099925c123fc 1 Like 1 Share

Sports / Super Falcons Qualify For Olympics — First Time In 16 Years by Great100000: 9:10pm On Apr 09 |
Super Falcons of Nigeria tonight broke a 16-year jinx to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics at the expense of a spirited South Africa in Pretoria. The Falcons held their hosts to a goalless draw to go through 1-0 on aggregate having won the first leg 1-0 in Abuja last week. It will be the first time Nigeria will qualify for the Olympics since 2008. In France, they are drawn in a tough-looking first round group that has world champions Spain, Japan and Brazil. Tonight was a game of two halves – Nigeria controlled the first period, while the home team were a lot more dangerous after the break as they chased for a go-ahead goal. The physicality of the Nigerians was a huge challenge for the reigning African champions, who struggled to get their passing game going. Nigeria kicked off this second leg and it was not long before striker Chinwendu Ihezuo header connected a cross from Ajibade only for South Africa goalkeeper Kylan Swart to hold firmly. Chiamaka Nnadozie of the Super Falcons was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the second half as she kept out the spirited South Africans time and again. Substitute Toni Payne brought a new energy to Nigeria with her drives through the midfield. In the closing minutes, Asisat Oshoala came on for the hard-running Ihezuo. Politics / Economy: Nigerians No Longer Accommodate Relatives As Cost Of Living Soars by Great100000: 11:16am On Apr 01 |
The era where people take in young relatives, raising them along with their children is gradually coming to an end. The limited purchasing power of every Nigerian at the moment fuels that. It has reduced living standards and Nigerians are becoming conscious of how they spend their money. As a result, Nigerians have been sourcing ways to cut the cost of feeding. Economy and lifestyle discovered that one of such new ways is turning down the adoption or accommodation of close relatives or returning those who had been under their care. Before now, Nigerians take turns assisting various family members, particularly those with low economic power. But today, an average family of five can hardly fend for themselves, let alone, adding a relative. Therefore, an additional member to them is like committing suicide. Mrs. Amanda Odudu, a fashion designer, complained bitterly about how her niece had returned her daughter, who had stayed with them for six years. “Last month, my niece called, saying that my daughter, who had stayed with them for six years, would be returning home. “I thought she was joking, not until I saw her at my doorstep the next day. “My niece’s action was based on her husband’s request who complained bitterly about the state of the economy. “She noted that she had no job to support her husband which could have made her keep my daughter. “She had to succumb.” On her part, Mr Onokoya Samson, a businessman, said his son was returned to him after spending three years with his brother. “It is still like a dream. I have a family of six. “My brother was the one who requested I allow my son to live with him so that he can reduce my responsibility. “My brother just brought my son to the house without informing me. “He said that he and his family are travelling abroad for greener pastures and have sold all they have to acquire their Visa and flight tickets. “He has two children and a wife. “I didn’t blame him but was grateful that he even helped me for three years. “Now I am faced with an extra responsibility. “Business is not profiting anymore. But my hope is in God. I believe he will save Nigerians from this horrible situation we have found ourselves in.” Mrs. Sarah Okwudili, a baker and a widow, lamented how she will now be faced with catering for three children. According to her, “ After the demise of my husband, his sisters volunteered to take care of two of my kids. “I agreed. They were taken good care of and attended good schools. If they were with me I won’t be able to afford the fees. “But as we all know, the country is not smiling at anyone. “ Recently, they returned my children with the complaint of a bad economy. “Reasons like increased school fees, rent and low income were given as reasons for returning them. “I was very sad but had to thank them because it is not easy to take care of children in this economy. “ People can only allow relatives that are working to stay with them because they won’t have any burden to bear. “Now I am saddled with the responsibility of taking care of three children. “I just believe God will surprise me.” Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/04/economy-nigerians-no-longer-accommodate-relatives-as-cost-of-living-soars/
