(1) Okra soup (aka ila alasepo)

Okra soup is simply a stewed okra soup recipe. It is a very popular delicacy among the Yoruba ethnic group of western Nigeria. It is also known as Ila Alasepo by the Yorubas. This Nigerian Okra soup recipe can be replicated with or without Palm oil. It is also by far the cheapest soup one could prepare in the country.

N200 – Okro
N150 – Grounded Pepper
N200 – Palm Oil
N300 – Ponmo

Business / How To Link Your NIN, BVN To Your Bank Account by Great100000: 4:45pm On Mar 01
The Central Bank of Nigeria has instructed all bank customers to link their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number, BVN to their bank account (s).

The apex bank had in a circular on December 1st 2023, directed that banks should place restrictions on all Tier 1 bank accounts without BVN.

Tier 1 accounts are accounts that can be opened with a valid identity or proof of address.

While some banks indicated February 29, 2024, as the deadline, some banks were silent about any deadline.

The National Identification Number (NIN) consists of 11 non-intelligible numbers randomly chosen and assigned to an individual after completing enrollment into the National Identity Database (NIDB).

Bank Verification Number (BVN) is a biometric technology with secure unique identifier to analyze human characteristics as an enhanced form of authentication for real-time security processes.

To link your BVN or NIN to your bank account, you can use one of the following methods

Link BVN,NIN to bank account via SMS

Simply text BVN/NIN, your account number, and BVN/NIN number to the number/code provided by your service provider or bank.

Link BVN,NIN to bank account via Internet Banking.

“Accordingly, the CBN hereby issues an amendment to Section 1.5.3 of the Regulatory Framework for Bank Verification Number (BVN) Operations and Watch-List for the Nigerian Banking Industry (The Guidelines).

In this regard: It is mandatory for ALL Tier-1 bank accounts and wallets for individuals to have BVN and/or NIN
“It remains mandatory for Tiers 2 & 3 accounts and wallets for Individual accounts to have BVN and NIN;

Phones / SIM-NIN Linkage: NCC Rules Out Extension, Telcos Bar 12 Million Lines by Great100000: 5:41pm On Feb 29
The Nigerian Communications Commission has ruled out an extension of the February 28, 2024 deadline for the linkage of Subscriber Identity Module cards to National Identification Numbers.

As a result, telecommunication companies have been directed to bar 12 million lines which have not been linked to the owners’ NINs after the expiration of the deadline.

The Director of Public Affairs, NCC, Reuben Mouka, confirmed the development to The PUNCH on Wednesday.

Reaffirming the NCC’s stance, Mouka stated, “We already issued a public notice in this regard and all the information. If there was an extension, NCC would have communicated that. But as far as I know, there is no extension.”

In a December 2023 notice, the NCC had asked telcos to bar SIMs that had not been linked to their owners’ NINs by February 28, 2024.

It further asked the Global Satellite Mobile Communications firms to bar those whose NINs have been submitted but not verified by March 29, 2024; and interdict those who have less than five lines linked to an unverified NIN by April 15, 2024.

The Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, Gbenga Adebayo, confirmed to The PUNCH that telecom operators would comply with the NCC’s directive.

He said out of the 224 million active lines, about 12m lines risked deactivation.

Adebayo said, “About 12 million SIM cards may not have been linked to NIN. Some of these SIM cards work on modems and mifi devices. According to the regulatory directives, those numbers that are not properly linked to NIN will have services withdrawn to them by midnight today. We stand by that regulatory directive and we are going to comply,”

The ALTON chairman also dismissed speculations about a possible extension, stating that the deadline ought to have happened last year.

He declared, “No, the regulator has made it clear that there won’t be any further extension. Let us remember that this ought to have happened last year, but it was extended by the regulator till the 28th of February, 2024.”

Since the NCC first ordered the suspension of SIM cards without NIN on December 15, 2020, there had been a rapid increase in the number of people obtaining their NINs.

Between the period the order was given and the second deadline date, January 19, 2021, Nigerian mobile operators received 47.8m new submissions from active subscribers.

In 2021, about 21 million subscribers were yet to obtain their NIN, even as the deadline for registration approached

A high-ranking official at MTN Nigeria, who was not authorised to comment publicly on the matter, informed The PUNCH that the company planned to disconnect the defaulting subscribers in compliance with the directive.

According to the official, there has not been any counter-directives from the NCC.

Emphasising that it is a federal issue, the official pointed out that some lines had been disconnected earlier.

“Remember, this is not an issue with the telcos. It’s a Federal Government issue, and before now, some lines were being disconnected. If they wanted to extend the deadline, they would have issued another notice, but they aren’t as I speak to you,” the official stated.

In response to the situation, a Public Relations official at Airtel Nigeria, Sam Adeoye, mentioned that Airtel would release an official statement on the development.

However, Chineze Amanfo, Lead, Public Relations at 9Mobile, did not respond to calls when contacted by our correspondent.

Meanwhile, the Federal High Court in Lagos has restrained telecom operators from deactivating or barring any line or SIM not linked to their NINs.

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa restrained the telcos while ruling on an application filed by a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje.

Lewis-Allagoa made the order on February 22, 2024, while ruling on a motion for the restraining orders filed by Ogungbeje.

Ogungbeje, in a suit marked FHC/L/CS/667/23, sued the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, and Airtel Network Nigeria Limited before the court.

He asked the court for an injunction pending appeal, ‘’restraining all the respondents jointly or severally, whether, by themselves, their agents, outlets, agencies, privies, officials, servants, men, parastatals, units, organs, or anybody or person however so called, from taking any step or action capable of enforcing the judgment in anyway and from further outright barring, deactivating and or restricting any SIM cards or his phone Lines, or of any Nigerian Citizen, slated for February 28, 2024, or any other scheduled date, pending the hearing and determination of his appeal at the Court of Appeal, against the court’s judgment delivered on May 8, 2023, by Justice Lewis-Allagoa.’’

When quizzed about the NCC’s reaction to the court injunction, Mouka responded, “We are not aware of any court injunction stopping the NCC from barring lines that have not been linked with NIN.”

Earlier today, at the ongoing 45th Kaduna International Trade, the Executive Vice Chairman, National Communication Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, insisted that, as a matter of critical national security, telecom consumers must link their NIN to their SIM.

The EVC was represented by Mouka at the forum.

Maida reaffirmed that the February 28th deadline was given to telecom operators to bar subscribers who failed to link their NIN to their SIM stands.

“To this end, the National Communication Commission has directed all telecommunication operators to bar the phone lines of subscribers whose lines are not linked to their NINs on or before February 28, 2024,” he added.

In his reaction to Mouka’s statement that the NCC was not aware of his suit, Ogungbeje said the position of the commission is ‘’most ridiculous and shameful.’’

Ogungbeje stated that the Federal Government of Nigeria and the AGF were part of the suit, stressing that the NCC as an agency of the Federal Government must obey the court order restraining it from barring SIMs not linked to NINs.

He said, “The order specifically stated that both the Federal Government and its agencies are hereby restrained. A very good instance is the order of the Supreme Court in respect of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Godwin Emefiele’s policy on the new naira notes.

“That position by the NCC is most ridiculous and shameful. The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation are part of the suit.’’

“So in this instant case, the NCC is bound by the order of the court as the court restrained both the Federal Government and it agencies, including the telecom firms.”

Network glitches

On Wednesday, major operators across the country, including MTN, Airtel, and 9Mobile, grappled with a widespread network connection crisis.

Subscribers were unable to make calls due to glitches attributed to a fibre optic cable cut.

The chairman of ALTON, Adebayo, clarified that the telecom connection failure experienced by subscribers was unconnected to the NIN/SIM link deadline.

He attributed the connectivity issue to the significant fibre cuts made by road contractors employed by the Federal Government.

The ALTON chairman noted, “What you have seen today as difficulty in connection has nothing to do with the NIN/SIM link deadline.

“There have been significant fibre cuts across the country, and this has impacted connectivity today, but efforts are being made by affected telecom operators to rectify this situation.”

He assured the public that efforts were being made to salvage the situation as soon as practicable while emphasising the need to protect telecom infrastructure.

“Appropriate reports would be made to the right quarters. The cuts can be traced to the activities of the Federal Government by contractors doing road work. This is why it is imperative to safeguard telecom infrastructure, going by what we have seen today.

“If we have critical national infrastructure protection, maybe what happened today wouldn’t have happened. We put it on the doorstep of the government to ensure that road contractors do not continue to cause this type of damage.”

The incident left countless residents in communication limbo, sparking a digital uproar across social media platforms.

Users have taken to expressing their frustration, detailing their struggles with the sudden loss of connection on social media.

A WhatsApp user, Emekuku said, “It’s frustrating when network providers in Nigeria cite server or application issues as reasons for service problems, leaving customers unable to resolve their issues.

“It highlights the need for improved infrastructure and communication from the providers to address such issues promptly and transparently.”

Another user, Babatee, noted, ‘’MTN is trying so hard to compete with Glo for the award of the most useless network in Nigeria. Dear MTN, no matter how hard you try, Glo will always be miles ahead of you when it comes to uselessness. So stop playing, fam.’’

MTN network

Another subscriber said, “The poor MTN network knocked me out of an important meeting and kept me incommunicado for several hours.

“Even now, they have only restored data services, but still no call or SMS. Not that they can ever say, ‘Oh, sorry for the network failure, oya take free airtime and data.’ Lai-lai.”

An Airtel user wrote, “It appears that the frustration with network services in Nigeria is widespread. The lack of a reliable network service provider affects many users, and the absence of explanations from the providers regarding disruptions in data and call services raises concerns.

“The situation may not be trending because such issues might be common and not getting enough attention.

In a statement released by MTN, the telecom company acknowledged the existence of a connectivity problem and committed to resolving the issue promptly.

According to the telco, the problem started at about 1.39 on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

In its reaction via X, MTN Nigeria blamed the network issue on multiple fibre cuts, even as it assured customers that its engineers were working assiduously to restore normal services.

The statement read, “Dear Customer, you have been experiencing challenges connecting to the network due to a major service outage caused by multiple fibre cuts, affecting voice and data services.

“Our engineers are working hard to resolve this, with services gradually being restored in some areas.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and ask for your patience & understanding as the team works to restore full service as soon as possible.”

Business / NIN-Bank Linkage: 85.51 Million Bank Customers Risk Account Suspension by Great100000: 4:20pm On Feb 29
About 85.51 million bank customers may not to be able to withdraw from their bank accounts by March 1, 2024, due to their inability to link their National Identification Numbers (NINs) and/or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to their accounts, LEADERSHIP findings have revealed.

Recall that data from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) shows Nigeria has 146 million active bank customers (individual) as of December 2022. As of January 26, 2024, the BVN count on the NIBSS portal was 60.49 million. On NIN, about 104 million NINs have been issued as of December 2023.

And with about 24 hours to the March 1, 2024 deadline given by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for customers to link their Bank Verification Number (BVN) and/or National Identity Number (NIN) to their bank accounts and wallets, Nigerians have raised issues surrounding verifying their NIN with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)

The apex bank had asked banks to restrict transactions on accounts whose NIN and BVN have not been linked, starting on March 1, 2024. On December 1, 2023, the CBN declared that any bank accounts lacking NIN and a BVN will be designated as ‘Post no Debit.’

To this effect, the central bank delivered a circular to all deposit money banks that included the new directive.

The apex bank stated that having a BVN and/or NIN is required for all Tier-1 bank accounts and wallets for people, even as it added that having a BVN and NIN is still required for Tiers 2 and 3 accounts as well as wallets for individual accounts.

If the deadline stands, about 85.51 million bank customers will be unable to withdraw money from their accounts.

Reacting to this development,, the director-general of National Identification Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote disclosed to LEADERSHIP at the commission’s management retreat in Lagos that the commission saw numerous violations and unethical behaviour at NIN enrollment and modification procedures, hence, the reason it put a temporary stop to its NIN enrollment efforts for Front-End Partners (FEPs).

“My decision to direct the revalidation of all FEPs was not targeted at anyone or group. It was a step towards sanitising the system and processes while ensuring the integrity of data in the country’s identity database. Now that we have revalidated and re-issued licenses to about 96 FEPs, we believe NIN registration will be faster and secure,” she added.

She, however, posited that FEPs are crucial in fast tracking the NIN registration process.

“FEPs are the link between our citizens and the NIMC enrollment ecosystem. As you communicate with candidates, treat their information with care, accuracy, and thoroughness. Let us work together to protect our database from errors, fraud, and other threats to its integrity.

“While we welcome the expansion of our National Identity Database to over 104 million captured NINs, and targeting additional 20 to 25 million NINs registration by the end of 2024, we cannot rest on our laurels. Millions more are waiting to be enrolled. They include students, farmers, businesspeople, and the elderly. They are the heartbeat of our country.

“Let us reach out to all parts of Nigeria, from booming cities to isolated villages. Allow us to collaborate with schools, hospitals, and community leaders. Let us ensure that no one is left behind, including the vulnerable, people with disabilities, those living in remote locations, and so on. Let us make the NIN enrollment process accessible, fast, and inclusive.”

On NIN-SIM Linkage, the executive vice chairman/CEO Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Aminu Maida said NIN-SIM linkage is a process of connecting one’s NIN to his phone number to authenticate and protect his identity.

To link NIN to SIM, Maida urged telecom subscribers to submit their NIN to their respective Service Provider to complete the process of NIN-SIM linkage.

For subscribers who do not have the National Identification Number (NIN), they can obtain theirs from NIMC Enrolment Centres or their Service Providers Customer Care Centres.

“A subscriber can also link his/her NIN to his/her SIM by sending NIN- your 11 digit NIN to 996 or Dial *996* Your 11 Digit NIN# and follow the prompts. A telecoms subscriber can link his/her NIN to as many as 4 mobile phone numbers per Mobile Network.

“One major objective of linking subscribers’ NIN to SIM is to help improve and enhance national security in the country. As a matter of critical National security, telecom consumers must link their NIN to the SIM. To this end, the Commission has directed all telecommunication operators to bar phone lines of subscribers whose lines are not linked to their NINs on or before February 28, 2024,” she said.

Meanwhile, a customer of a tier one bank in the country said she had received a message from her bank that asked her to visit the branch to rectify her BVN, but had ignored the message thinking it was a phishing email.

The message sighted by LEADERSHIP read: “We noticed that there is no Biometric Verification Number (BVN) linked to your account. Kindly visit any FirstBank branch close to you with a valid means of Identification to update your account information with your BVN on or before 29 February 2024.

“Please note that Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through its circular: PSM/DIR/PUB/CIR/001/053 dated 01 December 2023, has directed that effective, 01 March 2024, all funded accounts without BVN shall be placed on ‘Post No Debit or Credit’ and no further transactions permitted.”

Opay, a mobile money operator in the country, had posted a message on all its social media handles reading: “this is to remind you that effective March 1, 2024, all accounts without NIN or BVN will be restricted from conducting transactions on the Opay app. This complies with the CBN directive. Kindly provide the required information to continue enjoying our services.”

Some customers said they were contemplating moving their funds from accounts that have BVN/NIN issues to accounts that do not have issues, whilst some are planning to withdraw their funds so as not to be stranded.

Sports / Osimhen Bags Hat-trick As Napoli Hit Six Past Sassuolo (Video) by Great100000: 10:39pm On Feb 28
Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted five between them as Napoli thumped Sassuolo 6-1 on Wednesday, harking back to the thrilling partnership which won last season’s Serie A title.

Clinical Osimhen scored a hat-trick before Kvaratskhelia bagged a brace of his own as Napoli come from behind to handily win their game in hand and reignite hopes of European football.

After Amir Rrahmani levelled just before the half-hour mark, Osimhen rattled in his treble across 16 minutes either side of half-time to take his tally since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations to five in three matches in all competitions.

And Kvaratskhelia, who rolled Osimhen in for his simple third, belted in two fabulous strikes in the 51st and 75th minutes against a dreadful Sassuolo.

Napoli are still ninth but four points behind Roma, who sit sixth and in the Europa Conference League spot, after just their third league win of 2024.

Francesco Calzona’s team are 26 points behind this season’s runaway leaders Inter Milan, who host Atalanta later on Wednesday, a sign of just how bad their league title defence has been.

And while Roma are in sight, eight points separate them from Bologna and the Champions League positions with a huge home fixture with fierce rivals Juventus coming at the weekend.

Sassuolo, playing for the first time under Emiliano Bigica following Alessio Dionisi’s sacking on Sunday, drop down into the relegation zone following a sixth defeat in seven matches.

Sports / Osimhen Would Have Saved My Job – Mazzarri by Great100000: 3:35pm On Feb 21
Former Napoli coach, Walter Mazzarri, has admitted that the impact of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen in the Napoli team could have bought him more time at the club before he was fired on Monday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Mazzarri became the second managerial casualty of the reigning Italian champions, just three months after taking over from Rudi Garcia.

Mazzarri, 62, was appointed as the Gli Azzurri boss in November after a poor start to the season under Garcia. At the time of his arrival, Osimhen was battling with a hamstring injury.

Osimhen’s injury, coupled with his absence during the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast however prevented him from being available to the manager, playing just eight games under Mazzarri.

In that time, Napoli struggled without their talisman, as they recorded just three wins from nine games, and since his return, he hasn’t played due to fitness.

In a report published by La Repubblica, the former Cagliari coach wished he had Osimhen to face Barcelona in Napoli’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie to buy him a bit of time.

“I was hoping to manage against Barcelona with Victor Osimhen on the pitch,” Mazzarri said to La Repubblica in quotes revealed by CN24.

Osimhen led Napoli’s first Scudetto charge in 33 years last season, scoring 25 goals and also won the Serie golden boot .

Slovakia’s Francesco Calzona has now been appointed as the head coach of the three-time Serie A champions, and will be in charge till the end of the season.

Sports / Thomas Tuchel To Leave Bayern Munich At End Of Season by Great100000: 11:37am On Feb 21
Manager Thomas Tuchel will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

The 50-year-old replaced Julian Nagelsmann at the German champions in March 2023 on a deal until June 2025.

But the former Chelsea boss will depart a year earlier than planned as part of "a sporting realignment" at Bayern.

He led Bayern to last season's Bundesliga title after taking over in the spring but they now sit eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen after back-to-back league defeats.

One of those was an emphatic 3-0 loss to Leverkusen - and they were also beaten 1-0 by Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said both parties agreed to "mutually end our collaboration" following "an open, good conversation".

"Our goal is to carry out a sporting realignment with a new coach for the 2024-25 season," he added.

"Until then, every individual in the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga.

"I also explicitly hold the team responsible. Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced after the defeat at Lazio we will advance to the quarter-finals with our fans behind us."

Tuchel, who has also managed Paris St-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, said: "We will leave after this season. Until then, my coaching team and I will continue to do everything we can to ensure maximum success."

The German, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, oversaw a quarter-final defeat at the hands of eventual winners Manchester City in Europe last season.

However, his Bayern side were able to pip Borussia Dortmund on the final day of the Bundesliga campaign - because their rivals drew 2-2 at home to Mainz - to seal an 11th straight German title.

England captain Harry Kane arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth an initial 100m euros (£86m) in the hope of securing domestic and European success.

But a damaging period has seen Bayern slip further behind Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen side in the Bundesliga and they also must overturn a first-leg deficit against Lazio in Europe.

Sunday's 3-2 defeat at Bochum was their third in a row in all competitions.

Sports / Serie A: Napoli Players Angry Over Special Treatment Accorded Osimhen by Great100000: 6:51pm On Feb 19
Napoli players are allegedly unhappy over the special treatment given to Victor Osimhen.

According to Corriere della Sera (via CN24), there is discontent in the Serie A champions’ dressing room due to the special privileges Osimhen gets from the club.

The players are reportedly not happy with the special treatment accorded to the Nigeria international despite his tantrums about a new deal and late return from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

They are also not happy with the fact that the forward has featured regularly for the side this season despite not being fully fit.

Napoli have struggled to replicate last season’s form this term.

The Partenopei currently occupy ninth position on the Serie A table.

Walter Mazzarri’s side will take on Barcelona in a UEFA Champions League Round of 16 contest on Wednesday.

Sports / PSG Target Osimhen As Mbappe Replacement by Great100000: 6:25pm On Feb 17
Victor Osimhen is considered one of the top candidates to replace Kylian Mbappe at PSG.

The 25-year-old is expected to leave the French champions on a free transfer at the conclusion of the season, after years of speculation about a move to Real Madrid.

Los Blancos remain the favourites to sign the France captain, despite reports that the two parties have yet to reach an agreement.

PSG is already thinking about the future, and according to The Athletic, Napoli forward Osimhen is one of the frontrunners to replace Mbappe at the Parc des Princes.

The Nigeria international, who helped the Super Eagles reach the Africa Cup of Nations final, is a frequent transfer target despite signing a contract extension until 2026 in December.

Osimhen, 25, reportedly has a £112 million release clause in his new contract, which PSG would be happy to activate if Mbappe’s high wage did not strain their resources.

The Napoli striker has developed into one of Europe’s most lethal strikers in recent years, following up on a tally of 26 goals in 32 Serie A appearances last season with seven in 13 this season.

Manchester City and Chelsea are both dealing with a flurry of injury concerns ahead of Saturday's blockbuster showdown.

The Citizens and Blues are at opposite ends of the Premier League's top ten but played out a thrilling 4-4 draw in November.

Pep Guardiola has recently had a clean bill of health to contend with after welcoming back star duo Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.

That has coincided with a run of 11 consecutive wins across all competitions that has left City just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool with a game in hand.

However, City were left to rue the cost of an otherwise routine 3-1 Champions League away win over Copenhagen that saw several key players forced off with injuries.

NYSC / Increase In ‘alawee’ Uncertain For Corps Members – Minister by Great100000: 12:33pm On Feb 05
The Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, has stated that there is uncertainty regarding a potential increase in the monthly allowance ‘Alawee’ for serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by the Federal Government.

In January 2020, the FG approved the payment of N33,000 (from N19,000) to corps members as monthly allowance, about a year after former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new minimum wage bill into law in April 2019.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels TV Sunday Politics, Bio-Ibrahim stated that the government will find innovative ways to cater for corps members’ welfare amid dwindling oil revenues.

Her words: We can’t say for sure; we all understand that resources are dwindling; even oil revenues are not as they used to be, but we will find innovative ways of ensuring that corps members’ welfare is well taken care of.”

“When it comes to remuneration and looking totally at the holistic funding of the NYSC, we have announced a reform of the NYSC scheme itself. So, we want the scheme to go beyond that social programme of government to be that revenue-generating scheme and agency.

“The reforms which transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and prepare the corps members for the job market and to be decently and gainfully employed or to be employers of labour through entrepreneurship and of course, perfect matching into primary assignment and all the support they need in that career path.”

Sports / Hazard Claims He Was Better Than Ronaldo And Neymar But Messi Is The Greatest by Great100000: 5:34pm On Feb 03
Eden Hazard claims he was better than Cristiano Ronaldo in ‘pure football’ terms - but admits Lionel Messi is ‘the greatest in history’

Eden Hazard has sensationally claimed that he was better than Cristiano Ronaldo, before admitting that Lionel Messi is "the greatest in history".

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Belgian made a big-money move from Chelsea to Real Madrid in June 2019 and was handed over the iconic No.7 shirt by president Florentino Perez. Hazard was viewed as the successor of Ronaldo, the greatest goalscorer in the club's history. However, he failed to realise his potential and fizzled out after just seven goals and 12 assists during his injury-ravaged spell in the Spanish capital.

WHAT HAZARD SAID

During an interview with L'Equipe, Hazard weighed on the debate between Messi and Ronaldo and said: "Individually, Messi is perhaps the only one. I loved watching the Barcelona player, less so at the end, but he's the greatest in history. It's impossible to take the ball away from him. Cristiano is a bigger player than me but, in terms of pure football, I honestly don't think so. Neymar, maybe. After that, he's no better than me, but at Real, you've got the best, also in terms of their careers: Benzema, Modric, they were the best, Kroos, Kev' (De Bruyne), they all exude football."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While both Messi and Ronaldo are going strong with Inter Miami and Al-Nassr respectively, Hazard announced his retirement from football at the age of 32 in October 2023. The winger took little care of himself during his stint in Madrid and was often accused of being overweight. Moreover, a recurring ankle injury troubled him which saw his skills wane on the pitch.

Politics / Operation Rescue NR: FG Considers Converting $30bn Domiciliary Deposits To Naira by Great100000: 7:28am On Feb 03
There are strong indications that the Federal Government is mulling a policy that will result in the conversion of foreign currencies in domiciliary accounts of citizens to naira to stabilise the national currency, which earlier this week recorded its worst performance in history.

If it goes ahead with the plan, the government will order the conversion of foreign currencies sitting idly in individuals’ and corporate organisations’ domiciliary accounts to naira at a rate to be determined by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to top Presidency sources, the move is meant to stabilise the naira, which recorded its biggest fall in the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market on Monday, depreciating by 24 per cent to close at N1,348 per dollar.

One of the Presidency sources told Saturday PUNCH that the problem of forex scarcity and the naira fall was an elite issue, adding that the Federal Government would not fold its arms and continue to watch some individuals hoarding foreign currencies at the expense of the naira.

The source said, “The problem of dollar scarcity is an elite problem. You will notice that this happens at the end and the beginning of a new month. That is when the exchange rate goes up. Invariably, that is when governors collect FAAC (Federal Account Allocation Committee) allocations. Whatever the connection, we don’t know.

“There is no country in the world where people open domiciliary accounts to keep dollars. It happens only in Nigeria. This must be addressed. This is not only a political issue, but it is also an economic issue that must be addressed. Genuine demands driven by economic activities can’t bring this huge pressure. By June, dollar demands are supposed to have gone down when Dangote Refinery must have started.

“Nobody should keep a domiciliary account if they do not have legitimate foreign currency earnings like salary or getting foreign exchange revenue, either as an individual or as a company. Even if you have foreign exchange inflow as a result of your work, immediately after the money lands in your account, the banks should automatically change it to the local currency and your local currency account will be credited with the equivalent value.

“In Nigeria today, there are over $30bn in domiciliary accounts of individuals. It is in the CBN account. The records are there. It is not right. These are issues we will have to deal with. In other countries, dollars are not meant to stay in peoples’ accounts.”

If implemented, this will be a major policy shift by the President Bola Tinubu administration, which said in September 2023 that it was looking to attract funds held in domiciliary accounts and those held by Nigerians abroad into massive investments in various sectors of the economy.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, had disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja.

According to him, Nigerians have huge funds in domiciliary accounts and hold large sums abroad, which can be deployed to rejuvenate the economy, adding that his team was working to provide the needed environment to attract such funds into the local economy.

Edun said Nigerians in the Diaspora were also expected to play a significant role in the fresh move to take the economy to a position of high growth through productivity and efficient management of resources.

The minister had said, “What we can see is that really, there are quite substantial sources of foreign exchange in Nigeria.

“There is a lot of cash outside the system, which if brought into the system, increases the money supply of dollars, increases in reserves and so forth.

“There are funds in domiciliary accounts, which if you give people the incentives they will utilise for investment in Nigeria.

“Nigerians in Nigeria have huge holdings of foreign currencies in banks and financial institutions abroad.

“We need to provide the environment that brings those funds home to choose to invest in the Nigerian economy rather than foreign economies, which is what they are doing right now.

“If you place money in a bank abroad, you’re investing in a foreign economy. Finally, we also have a huge source of funds from the Diaspora.

“Nigerians living and working abroad, who of course, have their families here and who are interested in keeping a presence here; we have to encourage them to be willing to save in Nigeria, perhaps by improving payment mechanisms; so we have to do a lot to aim at them.

“There is plenty of hope and it is our determination to put in place the kind of structures and incentive framework that brings Nigeria money abroad and even Nigeria money outside the system into the financial and economic system to work, to create jobs for Nigerians.”

However, a branch manager of a Tier-1 bank in Lagos, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, told Saturday PUNCH, “It’s too early to talk about compliance with the CBN directive by banks. Maybe we will have a clearer direction by next week when we should get the true picture. I don’t have information about my bank’s compliance at the moment; it’s our treasury people who will have the information, but at my branch today (Friday), customers came to deposit dollars into their domiciliary accounts unlike the situation before now.

“I personally think it will be tough for the government to put a lien on money in domiciliary accounts. At what rate will such funds be converted to naira? The exchange rate is gradually coming down as a result of the CBN directive.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun; Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede; and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, met in Abuja on Friday to discuss how to enhance the efficiency of the financial system and also stabilise the naira.

The official X of the Federal Ministry of Finance posted, “The meeting highlighted our continuous efforts in aligning monetary and fiscal policies, underscored by a commitment to the rule of law.”

The EFCC chairman was quoted to have “reaffirmed the commission’s support for these initiatives, emphasising his dedication to enhancing (the) integrity of financial regulations.”

Banks, fintech barred from IMTO services

The Central Bank of Nigeria has banned banks and fintechs from International Money Transfer Operations.

In its ‘Guidelines on International Money Transfer Services in Nigeria,’ the apex bank said, “All banks are prohibited from operating International Money Transfer services but can act as agents.

“Also, financial technology companies are not allowed to obtain approval for IMTO.

The new guidelines by the CBN are meant to guide the IMTOs in conducting money remittances in compliance with the regulatory framework established by the CBN.”

This new guideline has parked conversations about the fate of fintechs like Flutterwave, Interswitch, Paga, and others, which have IMTO licences from the CBN.

The apex bank also increased the minimum share capital requirement for IMTO operators to $1m. Listing requirement to be an operator the bank stated, “Any IMTO intending to operate in Nigeria shall submit its application to the Director, Trade and Exchange Department with the following documents: A non-refundable application fee of N10,000,000 or such other amount that the bank may specify from time to time; payable to the CBN through electronic transfer or bank draft.

“Approval to operate in other jurisdictions or agency agreements (for all IMTOs). Minimum share capital of $1m for foreign IMTOs and the equivalent for indigenous IMTOs.”

Naira begins recovery

Naira’s fall against the dollar has slowed in the past three days, with the national currency closing the week at N1,435.53/$ on Friday after falling to an all-time high of N1,482.57 /$ on Tuesday at the official window.

This is a 3.17 per cent appreciation for the naira, which started the week badly. On Monday, the naira began its worst week of trading on the official window at N1,348/$ following the review of exchange rates calculation by the FMDQ Security Exchange.

In a notice to the market, FMDQ noted, “This revision aims to address recent fluctuations and challenges encountered in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange (‘FX’) Market.”

It explained that the new measures would ensure that NAFEX and NAFEM rates accurately reflect market conditions, adding, “These revisions are focused on enhancing the accuracy and reliability of the NAFEX and NAFEM rates’ determination process, with a focus on data availability and integrity involving a rigorous data validation process, including tolerance checks, which shall be applied by FMDQ Exchange, subject to internal policies and procedures.”

Also, the CBN in the week asked authorised dealers in the financial market to be transparent.

It noted that “…deliberate attempts to create price distortions by reporting false transaction details amounts to market manipulation, which will not be tolerated and henceforth face sanctions.”

Since Monday, the gap between the official market and the parallel market has reduced drastically. On Friday, the naira was N1,420/$ at the parallel market with Bureau De Change operators noting that there was still demand for the dollar at the black market.

One operator, who did not want his name in print, said, “I will buy from you at N1,400/$ and sell to you at N1,420/$.”

Another operator in Abuja, Malam Ibrahim, explained while noting that his rate was around N1,470/$, that rich Nigerians were rushing to the market to buy dollars and hoard for profit.

He said, “If the government wants to help the masses in this country, it knows the right things to do. Even after the directive given to banks by the CBN to release more dollars, nothing has changed.

“The problem is that even if you go to any bank, you won’t get anything. If you ask for $10,000, you have to pay bribes before they will release it.

“I can tell you that the naira will still fall because people are still buying and hoarding more dollars. I bought a dollar today for N1,470, how much do you think I will sell it or do you think I will sell at a loss? I am very sure that by Monday or Tuesday, the naira will start crashing again.

“Remember that we are only frontiers for people who only give a portion of profit. Nobody produces dollars in the country; the only source is from the government through the CBN. I can tell you that our politicians and very important personalities also have their Bureau de Change operations so that they can keep their dollars away from the banks.”

He added, “It is only the rich who trade in dollars; where will a poor man get dollars to put in his account? These people know the business well. They follow the trends of the market even more than journalists. They come in their cars to buy $5,000 and then return in a few hours to sell it so that they can monitor the market. We also have those whose children school abroad as well as international travellers, who need dollars abroad.

“Yesterday (Thursday), the naira gained but people are still rushing here to buy dollars and keep today (Friday). So, how do you think the country will get better? Some people just prefer to do this in their selfish interest rather than for the overall gain of the country.”

However, the President of the Association of Bureau De Change of Nigeria, Aminu Gwadebe, said Nigerians had stopped buying dollars to hoard because of the CBN’s policy direction.

He told Saturday PUNCH, “It used to be the rational behaviour, but there has been some relaxation in the demand pressures. Before, people were buying because of a lack of confidence in the CBN.”

To boost liquidity in the foreign exchange market, the apex bank on Wednesday ordered Deposit Money Banks to sell their excess dollar stock by February 1, 2024. Some bank officials stated that the directive boosted dollar supply a bit in the foreign exchange market this week.

The CBN, which disclosed this in a new circular released on Wednesday, also warned lenders against hoarding excess foreign currencies for profit.

According to officials, the central bank believes some commercial banks hold long-term foreign exchange positions to enable them to profit from the volatile movements of exchange rates.

The new circular introduces a set of guidelines aimed at reducing the risks associated with these practices.

In the circular titled, ‘Harmonisation of Reporting Requirements on Foreign Currency Exposures of Banks’, the CBN raised concerns over the growing trend of banks holding large foreign currency positions.

The circular came barely 48 hours after the CBN released a circular warning banks and FX dealers against reporting false exchange rates, among others.

The federal government has announced initiatives to transform the prospects and opportunities for Nigerian youth.

The initiatives include a reform of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to focus more on ensuring that when young people finish school, they are ready to obtain good jobs or start their own businesses.

Additionally, the establishment of the NextGen Bank in April 2024 will assist young people with funding to start their own entrepreneurial projects.

Sports / AFCON: Ivorian Fan Apologises To Family After Caught Wooing Lady During Senegal by Great100000: 7:51pm On Feb 01
An Ivorian football fan, Anselme Santos, who was caught on camera in the stands trying to woo a young lady, has reportedly issued an apology to his wife and children.

The amorous moment happened in the heat of celebration of Ivory Coast’s Round of 16 victory over defending champions in Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro on Monday.

The determined effort of Santos to engage in conversation with his seatmate instead was captured on camera, swiftly transforming into instant meme material.

According to Actu Foot, Santos expressed remorse for any distress his actions could have caused to his wife and children.

“In the euphoria, I told him ‘give your number’. It wasn’t mean, but she didn’t want to. So I didn’t insist. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the lady, my wife, and my children,” he said via Actu Foot.

The host nation, Ivory Coast, had faced a perilous situation in the competition with a possibility of elimination from the tournament but only qualified into the knock stage as one of the third-best teams from the group stage.

Aftermath, the Ivorian FA dismissed manager, Jean-Louis Gasset, even before the knockout stage teams had been finalised.

Guided by interim coach Emerse Fae, the Elephants found themselves trailing Senegal from the fourth minute following Habib Diallo’s opening goal. However, they fought their way back into the match, leveling the score four minutes before regular time thanks to Franck Kessie’s successful penalty.
