It is impossible to be Good without God: if you remove 'God' from 'Good' you end up with zero; that's nothing! |
OP, you need to understand that during National Youth Service, medical corps members are working as fully qualified medical practitioners (doctors). Their medical curriculum allows them to attain professional status whilst studying for their bachelor's degree (MBBS - Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery). Same applies to lawyers, who go to Law School and are called to Bar before undergoing the National Youth Service scheme. Consequently, both medical and law corps members are entitled to their full professional titles, 'Dr' and 'Bar' respectively, during NYSC. Meanwhile, the situation is different for engineering corps members, who are just fresh university graduates, and are not yet professional engineers. In Nigeria, you need your B.Eng degree plus additional four years of post-NYSC engineering experience for you to be eligible for registration as a professional engineer. In other parts of the world, like the UK for example, engineering graduates require advanced degrees such as a M.Eng or MSc in Engineering plus some years of relevant industry experience before they can become chartered engineers. It's tough enough to be an engineering graduate; yet, it's even tougher for one to become a professional or chartered engineer. The world over, there are so many graduate engineers, but very few professional (chartered) engineers. Based on my assertions above, it can be easily seen that the medical corps members are earning what they deserve. They come to NYSC with clinical experience, which enables them to immediately hit the ground running. Whereas, engineering graduates are teaching Physics in secondary schools and are adequately remunerated as 'teachers', not as 'professional engineers'. So, you shouldn't expect the government to treat you like they do to doctors; corps members from both disciplines are rendering different levels of services to the government during National Youth Service. Do not expect this to change immediately, because Nigeria is not a technology creating nation yet. As long as we remain a technology consuming (instead of technology creating) nation, our young engineering graduates would continue to teach during national youth service. The government cannot afford to place all engineering corps members in engineering companies, as such companies do not exist in the first place. The only way forward is for the government to provide the right environment and legislation to deliberately attract manufacturing companies and private sector's participation in the technological development of the nation. No nation can develop or succeed in the present world without developing its engineering or technological capacities. There is the popular saying that, "You are what you eat." Same way, a nation is what its engineering or technology is. So, you can easily see the reason why Nigeria is like this. You also need to know that engineers can't be appreciated like their counterparts in the medical and legal professions (doctors and lawyers). The reason is simple: engineers don't deal directly with people in the society, meanwhile doctors treat their patients one-on-one; and lawyers attend to their clients one-on-one, so they are able to win the admiration of the public and are appreciated accordingly. Imagine a doctor coming to the rescue of a dying man, he would never forget how a doctor 'saved' his life and therefore, he would highly esteem medicine. Same applies to an innocent man who was erroneously sentenced to death, but his lawyers were able to prove his innocence and got him acquitted at last. Such a man would be so excited about lawyers that he would even want all his children to study law, if possible (lol). Engineering is akin to the 'man behind the orchestra'. He conducts and dictates the melodious symphony of the orchestra. He doesn't play any instruments and so, doesn't get noticed. However, without him, there would be no orchestra and the performance would be a total fiasco and in disarray. The engineer stays in the design office thinking of how to make the world a better place for all. Engineering is the singular profession that has impacted our world the most; by using the almighty power of mathematics, engineering has completely changed our world for good. All professions look up to engineering for their own development (medicine and law inclusive). If you take engineering/technology away from medicine, doctors would become mere herbalists or native doctors - without syringes, stethoscope and all medical devices, there would be no modern day medicine. Medicine is what it is today; thanks to engineering. If you take engineering/technology away from legal practice, lawyers would become mere hearsayers as there would be no credible means of evidence to support their cases. Take technology away from banking, transportation, tourism, agriculture, business, entertainment, etc., and the world would become dark, void and shapeless again, as it were in the beginning according to the scriptures. Engineering holds all other professions together. Engineering is what makes a nation 'developed' or 'under-developed'. No nation can be great because of medicine, if the nation's engineering is poor. Nations can only be great because of its advanced engineering and technology. The major achievements of the world are all engineering achievements: things like putting man on the moon; a robot on Mars; the international space station, the airplane; the internet; rocket, submarines, etc. Engineers don't compete with anyone because they are so unique. So my friend, be proud that you're an engineer. Don't allow the 19k 'allowee' cause you to despair. Do your best to develop the right skills as an engineer, by the time you arrive, you would put those doctors on your payroll as your personal or family doctors. I earned 8k during my youth service and taught Physics too in a secondary school, but today it's a completely different story. Whilst our medical friends are scampering for jobs in federal health institutions, we are touring the world, having fun as engineers. I love doctors because they save lives directly. For this reason, medicine will always be the most noble profession in the world. Whether you like it or not, you have to accept it, my friend. Nigeria is a technology consuming nation and so cannot appreciate engineering properly. Technologically developed nations respect and honour engineering and engineers. Hopefully, we will get there someday. Engineering rules the world! |
This is ridiculous! A 10MW dual fuel power station won't costs more than N800m. Even at N1b, it's still insane. What's the way forward Nigerians? We cannot continue like this. No nation succeeds this way. The outrageous cost apart, why generate a paltry 10MW? Sustainability can never be achieved nationally by building 10MW stations everywhere. It's like using keke Napep instead of luxurious buses for commuting passengers from Lagos to Onitsha. Maintenance cost would soar, reliability would fall, environmental pollution and noise would skyrocket. Overall, losses would increase, while efficiency would be nothing to write home about. Nevertheless, I commend the effort of the Lagos State Government for this initiative, but it's not the way forward if we genuinely want to solve our electricity problems. Give me N3.2b, and I would deliver a dual fuel power station with 40MW capacity comfortably to you. It doesn't require rocket science at all. It is well with us, Nigerians! |
Wow! This is lovely! I think I've listened to this song before, but I didn't know the video was out also. Thanks Yourangel for posting! ![]() |
I studied Mechanical Engineering and now work as a CFD engineer. I use numerical modelling and simulations to test, design and optimise mechanical power systems; fluid flows, combustion processes, fluid mixing and reaction processes, etc. I don't hear a lot about CFD in this part of the world. What companies do you know in the country that use CFD in their designs and operations? What are the job prospects for CFD engineers here in Nigeria? I'm just curious to know how this powerful tool is being used in Nigeria. CFD is extensively used in engineering design, product development, research & development and in academic research. CFD finds applications in virtually all engineering disciplines; be it mechanical (aeronautical, aerospace, automobile, power plants, etc.), electrical/electronics (electrical power systems and design of silicon chips heat dissipation system), civil (hydrodynamics, fluid structure interaction between dam and water), chemical (reaction kinetics, process systems, etc.), petroleum (flow of oil and gas), biomedical engineering (flow dynamics of blood in human body), etc. What is your experience with the use of CFD? Let's share our experiences here. |
Joke of the year? This got me cracked up! Lol ![]() Dani Alves' ex-wife Dinorah, who got her FIFA players' agent licence in March, is since then the new agent of the Brazilian right back. [md] |
While sports director Zubizarretta wants to sign Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels (24), Vilanova prefers PSG player Thiago Silva (28). [md] |
ebdib: This is just sad.The CB of choice? Thiago Silva Santos forward Neymar (21) and PSG centre back Thiago Silva (28) are Barcelona's first main transfer targets for the summer. [sport] |
So, na fear dey catch Bayern like this? Lol Because of superstition, Bayern Munich aren't staying in the same hotel in Barcelona as in 2009, when they lost 4-0 at the Camp Nou. [md] (@barcastuff) |
I hope this is true! ![]() "Puyol, recovering from knee surgery, will certainly be back for the return leg of the CL semis and hopes to be at the first leg too." [marca] With Puyol and Messi back, Bayern go hear ween! ![]() |

AjanleKoko: Messi taken off. Weird. I hope he didn't get a knock. The Andalusians have been all over him this evening. logica: Oh no...not all all. Eyes on Liga match this weekend. Abeg the game was already wrapped up.Messi asked to be subbed off out of precuation because he had groin muscle discomfort #fcblive [md] Roura (assistant coach): "Messi? In principle it's nothing bad, overstretched some thigh muscle, subbed off out of precaution." #fcblive I hope it isn't serious o!? There's el clasico on Wednesday next week |
George_D: funny enough, none in spain voted for himThe Media Representative from Spain voted him in 2nd position. Ronaldo was voted 3rd. So, someone voted for Messi in Spain

Jarus: Everybody that got nomination(by coaches, captains and journalists, even if one nomination) was among the initial long list released by FIFA way back November. The FIFA/FIFPro World XI voting system is different from that of the Ballon d'Or. All professional footballers in the world (more than 55,000 of them) are involved in the Fifa World XI voting. Each professional footballer in the world (from Africa, Europe, America, Asia, etc) selects an ideal team of 11 players (1 goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 3 midfielders and 3 attackers). The goalkeeper with the highest vote (selection) becomes the fifa world xi goalkeeper. Same applies to the remaining 10 players. Here's an excerpt from wikipedia Each year FIFPro invites all professional footballers in the world to compose their best team of the year. FIFPro has organized the vote for the World XI since 2005. Every year the world players' union, with the help from all of its associations, distributes more than 55,000 ballots all over the world. One ballot for each professional footballer, regardless where he is playing: Australia, Brazil, China, South Africa, Spain or the United States of America. Every player is requested to pick one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three strikers. The result of this immense election is the FIFPro World XI. In 2009 the world players' union joined hands with FIFA. The team name has changed into the FIFA FIFPro World XI. Each year the eleven players from this elite squad will receive their awards during the FIFA World Player Gala. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFPro#FIFA_FIFPro_World_XI |
Neymar (Santos): "Messi is the best, he's an example, the mirror in which one looks." [tv3] |
Del Bosque (coach ESP): "Messi is very normal, good-natured. He's such a great player, they should make another trophy for the rest." [ser] Lol at bolded |
Congratulations Leo Messi! The new debate now is: who is better? Cristiano or Iniesta? The initial debate between Messi and Cristiano was completely laid to rest last night in Zurich. Messi now stands taller than anyone from his generation. The whole world (in Zurich) gave him a standing ovation as a testament to that fact last night. Four Ballons no be moi moi! |
Congrats Leo! So, Cristiano Ronaldo could condescend to the level of relinguishing his national team captaincy to Bruno Alves, just because of Ballon d'Or vote? Na wa for this girl o!
