Health / China Busts 35 Restaurants For Seasoning Food With A Drug Opium Poppy by greenhope(m): 5:38pm On Jan 22, 2016
(CNN)Dozens of restaurants in China have been busted for serving noodles, hotpot, grilled fish and fried chicken seasoned with possibly addictive opium poppies.

The China Food and Drug Administration said in a statement this week that a total of 35 restaurants were under investigation and five of those had already been prosecuted.

The regulator said the poppy derivatives it detected included morphine and codeine and called on local authorities to step up their monitoring efforts. The additive has been banned since 2013.

Cooks sprinkling powdered poppy on their dishes isn't uncommon in China although it's unclear whether it can make a restaurant's food genuinely addictive.

In 2014, a noodle vendor was detained for 10 days after admitting adding powdered poppy plant to his dishes to keep customers coming back.

The case only came to light after police stopped a vehicle driven by a 26-year-old man and tested him for drugs not long after he had consumed a bowl of the noodles.

Health / Having More Children Slows Down Cellular Aging Process - Study by greenhope(m): 7:56am On Jan 12, 2016
The secret to anti-ageing? Have more kids!

SCIENTISTS believe they’ve discovered the secret to slowing down the ageing process - and it involves your offspring.

A study by Simon Fraser University researchers indicates that the number of children born to a woman influences the rate at which her body ages.

The study led by health sciences professor Pablo Nepomnaschy and postdoctoral researcher Cindy Barha found that women who give birth to more surviving children exhibited longer telomeres. Telomeres are the protective tips found at the end of each DNA strand and are indicative of cellular aging. Longer telomeres are integral to cell replication and are associated with longevity.

The study assessed the number of children born to 75 women from two neighbouring indigenous rural Guatemalan communities and their telomere lengths. The participants’ telomere lengths were measured at two time points 13 years apart, through salivary specimens and buccal swabs. This is the first study to examine the direct association between the number of children and telomere shortening in humans over time.

According to Nepomnaschy, the study findings contradicts life history theory which predicts that producing a higher number of offspring accelerates the pace of biological aging. “The slower pace of telomere shortening found in the study participants who have more children however, may be attributed to the dramatic increase in estrogen, a hormone produced during pregnancy,” says Nepomnaschy who also spearheads the Maternal and Child Health Laboratory at the SFU Faculty of Health Sciences. “Estrogen functions as a potent antioxidant that protects cells against telomere shortening.”

The social environment that the study participants live in may also influence the relationship between their reproductive efforts and the pace of aging. “The women we followed over the course of the study were from natural fertility populations where mothers who bear numerous children receive more social support from their relatives and friends,” explains Nepomnaschy. “Greater support leads to an increase in the amount of metabolic energy that can be allocated to tissue maintenance, thereby slowing down the process of aging.”

However the researchers emphasize that aging is a very complex process about which we still have much to learn.

Business / Why It’s Time To Start Digging A Grave For Blackberry 10 by greenhope(m): 5:03pm On Jan 08, 2016
We all knew this day would come but now it seems it’s finally here. BlackBerry CEO John Chen said at CES 2016 this week that his company is going to release at least one new Android phone in 2016 while also saying that it doesn’t plan to release any phones based on its own BlackBerry 10 operating system this year. Chen did say he would still like to release a BlackBerry 10-based handset in the future but he wouldn’t commit to anything — rather, he’s waiting to see whether the company’s Android phones can make its smartphone hardware business profitable again.

What this means is that BlackBerry is going to go at least two consecutive years without releasing a phone based on BlackBerry 10. While Chen can hold out hope that the company will eventually release a future device that runs its own platform, the writing is on the wall. It costs BlackBerry a lot less money and manpower to develop Android phones since it doesn’t have to develop and maintain its own native OS. This also means BlackBerry doesn’t need to sell them in gigantic numbers to make at least some money on them.

And speaking of sales, BlackBerry 10 was simply going nowhere as a platform. In its last quarterly earnings report, BlackBerry revealed that it only sold 700,000 smartphones over the previous three months and a good chunk of those phones were likely of the Android-based BlackBerry Priv. BlackBerry 10 has an app ecosystem that’s even worse than Windows Phone and BlackBerry’s OS market share in the U.S. currently stands at a dreadful 0.7%.

BlackBerry is still going to provide updates to BlackBerry 10 devices, of course, so it’s not like current BlackBerry 10 users will be abandoned. However, any of the remaining BlackBerry faithful clinging to the hopes of new BlackBerry 10 hardware may be in for an endless wait.

Business / CBN Ban Creates Huge Demand For Bitcoin In Nigeria by greenhope(m): 5:20pm On Dec 26, 2015
Central Bank Ban On Use of ATM card for Foreign Transactions Creates A Urge Market for Bitcoin In Nigeria

The Central Bank of Nigeria has banned the use of Naira denominated ATM cards abroad. Could this mean an explosion for the Bitcoin market in the country?

In a circular passed to all commercial banks within the country on Monday December 21 2015, the CBN ordered commercial banks to stop customers from using their debit and credit cards outside the country, a directive which takes effect from January 1 2016 in a move which the CBN Governor says will stem the flow of foreign currency out of the country.

Nigerian cards are being rejected already

Foreign online retailers have already started rejecting cards issued by Nigerian banks as there have been complaints by citizens who have tried to make purchases but have been turned down.

Hetty Hembadoon Orkuma is a bookseller and the CEO of Coffee Coloured Books, a bookstore located within the heart of the Federal Capital Territory. When asked about her experience, she was quick to reveal her frustration saying:

“Merchants are rejecting the Naira mastercard, so I can neither buy books nor pay for shipments. I have no choice but to wait and hope that I do not run out of stock before a solution is found.”

Increase in demand is obvious

Bitcoin exchangers within the country are already experiencing some difficulty in meeting with the demand for the cryptocurrency due to higher demand in recent times. Victor Yerima is the CEO of Africash International, an e-currency exchange outfit in Kaduna. Speaking on the impact of the recent ban by the CBN, Victor say:

“There is already a high demand in the market for Bitcoin that we the exchangers can hardly meet, I wonder what will happen after January 1 2016”.

Jack Ma says, "Please tell your children that the world is changing every day and no one is going to wait for you in the past. When lighter was invented, matches slowly disappeared. When calculator was created, abacus was to fade away. When digital camera was designed, the market of negative film no longer existed.

When direct market selling/internet-based selling arises, traditional marketing declines. When smartphone with 4G (wireless internet access) was introduced to the world, you no longer need to turn on your computer at home. When WeChat and WhatsApp (mobile text/voice/video messaging) are developed, traditional text messaging is no longer as popular as before.

Let's not blame "Who took over Whose business." It's only because people are more adjustable and adaptable to new ideas and changes in the world.

Someone asks Jack Ma, "What is your secret for success?" He says, "Really simple...I am doing (action) while you're only watching."

Please remember that the world keeps changing every day. If you don't change, you'll be left behind. You reap what you sow with your time. If you spend time to drink, you may become an alcoholic. If you spend time to complain, you may become a blamer. If you spend time to beautify yourself, you may become a pretty girl/handsome guy. If you spend time to stay healthy, you may enjoy a healthy good life. If you spend time to be picky, you may become a 'mean' person. If you spend time to learn, you may gain wisdom. If you spend time with your family, you may foster a warm and loving relationship with your loved ones.

Let those who have mind mine from this thought.

Health / Brazil Warns Women Not To Get Pregnant by greenhope(m): 8:00am On Dec 05, 2015
A link between a form of fetal brain damage and the mosquito-born zica virus has been confirmed by Brazilian health authorities .

The link between zica, first medically identified as a new disease half a century ago, and birth defects has never been made.

The virus, endemic in parts Africa, South America, Southeast Asia and some Pacific Islands, has until now been blamed for symptoms such as fever, mild headache, skin rashes, joint pain and conjunctivitis, or "red eye."

Initial analysis shows that the virus can be passed to a fetus and that the fetus is at greatest risk from the virus during the first three months of pregnancy, the statements said.

More tests and studies are needed to clarify the exact method of transmission and infection, the statement added.

A surge in recent months of babies born with microcephaly, or an unnaturally small brain, in Brazil's northeast, led authorities to suspect the virus may have more sinister effects than previously recorded, the ministry said.

Microcephalic children can suffer developmental and intellectual difficulties that limit intelligence and muscle coordination for life.

The ministry's conclusion was made after tests on the tissue of a deceased child with microcephalic symptoms by the Ivandro Chagas Institute in Belém, Brazil, one of South America's leading health institutes. There is also evidence that zica has contributed to the deaths of adults weakened by other diseases.

Zica is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito also known to carry the yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya viruses.

The ministry said that the new information means that zica has become a serious risk to public health and that Brazil must embark on an emergency program to control the Aedes aegypti mosquito to prevent the virus' spread.

In a note published on its website, the ministry insists that more research is needed to clarify the connection between the virus and the condition. It states the period of greatest risk for pregnant women appears to be in the first three months of gestation.

Though it is not official policy, Cláudio Maierovitch, the director of the communicable disease surveillance department at the ministry of health, has advised women in high-risk areas to avoid attempting to conceive.

“Don’t get pregnant at the moment,” he said. “That’s the wisest course of action.”

Brazil has invited the Atlanta, Georgia-based U.S. Center for Disease Control to visit the country and observe research and control efforts, the health ministry said.

Nairaland / General / Re: Scientist Says People Who Talk To Themselves Are Geniuses by greenhope(m): 6:45am On Dec 01, 2015
But you know someone the theory makes sense
Nairaland / General / Scientist Says People Who Talk To Themselves Are Geniuses by greenhope(m): 4:20pm On Nov 30, 2015
People Who Talk To Themselves Are Geniuses according to Scientist
This came to me as a shock this afternoon when I stumbled on this research report

Seriously, I see people who talk to them when walking on the road has people that has got some issues either mental, emotional, spiritual or brokolysies pardon me is the science of being broke and not having money in the pocket.

Do you talk to yourself? Don’t get embarrassed admitting it because science has discovered that those who talk to themselves are actually geniuses… and not crazy!

Research Background

Psychologist-researcher Gary Lupyan conducted an experiment where 20 volunteers were shown objects, in a supermarket, and were asked to remember them. Half of them were told to repeat the objects, for example, banana, and the other half remained silent. In the end, the result shown that self-directed speech aided people to find the objects faster, by 50 to 100 milliseconds, compared to the silent ones.

“I’ll often mutter to myself when searching for something in the refrigerator or the supermarket shelves,” said Gary Lupyan. This personal experience actually made him conduct this experiment. Lupyan, together with another psychologist, Daniel Swigley, came up with the outcomes that those to talk to oneself are geniuses. Here are the reasons:

It stimulates your memory

When you are talking to yourself, your sensory mechanism gets activated. It gets easier on your memory since you can visualise the word, and you can act accordingly.

It helps stay focused
When you are saying it loud, you stay focused on your task, and it helps you recognise that stuff immediately. Of course, this only helps if you know what the object you are searching looks like. For example, a banana is yellow in colour, and you know how a banana looks like. So when you are saying it loud, your brain immediately pictures the image on your mind. But if you don’t know what banana looks like, then there is no effect of saying it loud.
