This has consistently been the case for many decades and for nigerians, road accidents have become a part of life. In fact you are counted lucky when you travel on the road and are not involved in any accidents. Like every other problem in Nigeria, the lazy and popular approach is to attribute issues like this to spiritual causes and never really giving proper thought to the changeable or controllable causes. A nigerian will rather pray than inspect his tyres, believing that the prayer would be sufficient in keeping him safe. If the prayers really worked then we should not be experiencing the high fatality rates we currently do.

In solving problems, one must look at the different components of the problem and address the issues that concern the components. Road transport involves 3 main components-the vehicle, the road and the driver. These 3 components combine in most cases to result in an accident. Cars on their own, no matter how rickety, cannot cause accidents because they require someone or something to drive them. A stationary car can not be involved in an accident unless a moving one ploughs into it. Hence, looking at the 3 components, we can determine what ways we may be able to mitigate against the problem.


The human component

Humans have ultimate control of what happens in their environment. We determine how we run society, we determine how we run our lives and of course we determine how we drive our cars. In many sane parts of the world, to obtain a driver's’ licence people have to go through driving tests-and these are not just formalities. People have to demonstrate they are competent in using the road. They have to demonstrate they understand what the road signs mean, the speed limits, what to do in emergency situation etc. You simply would not obtain a driver's licence if you do not pass the test. It's as simple as that.

In Nigeria, because we are “wiser”, anyone can obtain a driver’s licence even if they do not know what the roundabout rule is. Even the simplest road markings are only just meant for aesthetics in the eyes of many Nigerians. So if we must increase the level of safety on our roads, we must increase the level of training and competence in our drivers. It’s no magic.

What about drink driving or driving under the influence? How many times have you been in a public bus whose driver has just had a shot before taking off? Instead of challenging the driver or refusing to travel in their vehicle, we pray to God to grant us safe journey. Like in the words of the great sage, Charlie boy, “our mumu never do?

This human component seems to be the most important as it is the factor that determines how the others are controlled. If we are serious about making a change and putting an end to senseless deaths on our road, drivers must qualify before they take to the wheels.

In Nigeria, the other factor that certainly needs addressing is the roads. Our roads are in pretty bad shape and even the most careful and experienced drivers struggle to drive without fear. Apart from the fact that the roads are dangerously littered with potholes, most of the roads have no road signs and sometimes the road signs could even be misleading. Although a single highway code exists for Nigeria, there is a very wide variation in the use of road signs (where they exist) between different localities. Road constructors just seem to mark the roads with whatever paint colour or design available to them. No one seems to standardized the work of the engineers.

To address this issues, roads must be constructed to the highest standards, giving consideration to the weather patterns and environmental conditions in an area. Maintenance of the roads should be including in the contract for construction, there should be some form of warranty on the roads, so that contactors know they will be responsible for fixing roads that show signs of wear soon after they are constructed.

Also important about it roads is that Nigerians must be good custodians of public infrastructure. Vandalism of safety barriers, street lights or other facilities must be stopped. Patriotism must be the watchword for every Nigerian.


The vehicles

There are approximately 11 million vehicles registered to ply nigerian roads, most of these being older than 3 years old as most Nigerians can only afford to buy imported second hand vehicles. That being said, the road worthiness of many vehicles on Nigerian roads call for question. There are no mandatory checks that ensure vehicles are fit to be on the roads. As long as a car moves, a Nigerian can get it on the roads, risking lives in the process.

There certainly must be some improvement in this area. To start with, all public transport vehicles must have mandatory annual checks of road worthiness. Tyres, combustion systems, exhaust, balance, everything that affects safety should be checked. Vehicle owners should take responsibility for their own safety to ensure they have the correct car parts, check tyre pressures and oils before embarking on a journey and taking the vehicles for regular servicing.


Finally, road safety like every other problem in the the Nigerian National life needs to addressed and not just talked about. Deliberate steps must be taken by the Transport Ministry, Police, FRSC and VIO to ensure a reduction in the carnage on our roads. Roles of the different agencies must be properly defined. It should not just be about mounting checkpoints and carrying out senseless service on the roads. It should be about developing policies, plans and targets towards improving safety on the roads.

Following the disturbing responses given by Barrister Adebayo Shittu during his screening exercise at the senate, he has made it clear that he is a religious fanatic and would not publicly denounce the Boko haram sect because he fears for his life. This is a shame and a slap on the face of our galant men and women who defend our country from this menace and to those who live in the affected regions. It is unbecoming for a prospective minister to sit on the fence with regards to such matters of national concern. There are also reports that this man was indicted in the religious riots that occured in time past in Oyo state. Nigerians thereby call on the president and members of the national assembly not to proceed with the confirmation of this individual.

You have probably seen the adverts on Linda’s blog and newspapers and you thinking may be its time to go and study abroad, in the UK. However, before you take that huge leap, take a step back and evaluate your options. Having studied the system I have come up with the following reasons why studying in the UK is not as attractive as it is painted.

1. There are no Jobs

It is the dream of everyone going to study abroad to get to practice their skills in the environment where they have learned them. Unfortunately, however, for migrants coming to study in the UK, the chances of getting a job after completion of their study are very slim and there a few reasons for this. But most importantly is that there are simply no Jobs. The UK has an unemployment rate of about 6% and there are about 1 million UK citizens receiving job seekers allowance. So you see, jobs are difficult to come by.

2. Strict Immigration Rules

The immigration rules in the UK are quite complex and sometimes even officials in the universities do not understand many of these rules as it is none of their business. The UK immigration system has been deliberately designed to deter migrants from coming into the country. Unlike in the past, the Tier 4 student Visa does not have enough time allowance for foreign students to apply for Jobs and attend interviews after the completion of their study. You would usually on get between 2-4 months to stay after handing-in you dissertation. This is usually not enough time. In addition, to be eligible for a job interview, the company must ensure that there is no suitable UK citizen for that job. This is almost always impossible except for few fields such as medicine and nursing.

3. Excessive Visa application fees and expensive tuition

Applying for a Tier 4 student Visa could be a nightmare. At present, it costs £322 (NGN 100000). This is excluding costs associated with planning, consulting and logistics. In addition, you have to have a “maintenance fund” in your bank account for 28 consecutive days at least 31 days before your Visa application. This includes a full year tuition fee which could be about £12000 (NGN 3.6 Million) and living expenses of about £10000 (NGN 3 Million). These are definitely not easy to come by, even by well to do UK Citizens. More recently, there has also been an addition of a “Health Surcharge” of about £150 pound (NGN 50000) a year and you don’t get a refund if during the year you do not use the health system.
In terms of Tuition fees, the average tuition fee for a non-UK citizen for most one-year courses is about £12000 (NGN 3.6 Million) which is about twice the amount a non-UK citizen pays for the same course.

4. Discrimination

Although not overt, there is a subtle but palpable air of discrimination towards immigrants in the UK, more so in recent years where many people face financial hardships. Many UK citizens have been made to believe that immigrants are the cause of their difficulties, however many independent studies would disprove this. The truth however remains that many Britons would prefer that you stay back in your home country.

Considering the financial implications, job prospects and the shock associated with relocating, it is only wise to think and think again before taking that step towards coming to the UK to study. Even UK citizens with all the benefits they have being citizens do not find it easy coping with their own system.

UK universities make money off immigrants hence the widespread media campaigns and open days, however they do not influence policies in a positive way so as to make it a wise investment for young people hoping to break new ground. Therefore, before you take that step, think, “Would I be better-off investing the money and resources in other more fruitful ventures?”
This is not to discourage you. Many people come to the UK and settle in nicely, but you must weigh the pros against the cons before you take your decisions.

There is an old Nigeria- the country where corruption, mediocrity and selfishness have been institutionalized. Wrong is right in this dispensation and so you are said to be slack if you insist on what is right(wrong in the old times). Lets have young people who refuse to think like those before them. Lets have young people who play their roles with new thinking and innovation. People who respect the dignity of the Human life. Lets have Governors whose works rather than billboards speak for them. People reasonable enough to embark on projects that will outlive their tenure in office.
The people need water to flow in homes.They need schools-real schools, they need electricity, they need health care; they need to live older than 48years.The old thinking is that we are poor, we cant afford those basic things.The new thinking, however, is "how can we go about it?". Why are our towns and cities unplanned? why are our roads untarred? are these things not important?
I am the Governor, I grew up in the village, I was without shoes when I was young. Several years after, in the same village where I grew up, my brothers, uncles, sisters, cousins, nephews and nieces have remained without schools, hospitals and clean water. Why have we refused to identify with these ones. Why do we leave them to suffer. We build beautiful houses and fence them in for the fear that somone might attack us;someone we refused to provide for in this year's budget. Everyone wants a part of the cake and some will take it by force if it doesn't come to them freely.
Let us shun hypocrisy. God is light and in him there is no darkness. If we say we love God and do not love the man whom we see, we lie. There are beggars everywhere. Asking from those who can barely help. Old men and women, some who have served the nation with all their strenght. Why have we refused to be loyal to these ones.
Nigeria is not an inanimate object. Nigeria is made of people, so we cannot serve Nigeria without serving the people. We cannot love without the people.
Young man think fresh. Say no to all forms corruption. What you sow you shall reap. Corruption destroys the corrupt.
