Politics › Hamas Are Not Terrorists But Freedom Fighters Says MURIC, Appeals For Cease Fire by Grit2943(op): 8:29pm On Oct 13, 2023 |
Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, Muslim groups have staged a peaceful procession, urging an immediate ceasefire in the war-hit city of Gaza.
Muslims, in their hundreds, gathered at Dawah Centre at Ijesha area of Lagos on Thursday, where they offered prayers for enduring peace in the Middle East.
Addressing a larger crowd of Muslim faithful, the Director of Muslim Awareness International (MAI), Abdulwaheed Atoyebi appealed to the international community to uphold previous United Nations agreements on the long-running Israel-Palestine crisis.
Atoyebi lamented that the UN Resolution of 1947, which granted independence to both Israel and Palestine, has not been accomplished.
According to him, the illegal occupation of Gaza and the repeated intimidation of Palestinians by Israeli forces may have provoked Hamas to respond.
He called on the Nigerian government to take sincere steps to end the crisis and expressed solidarity with Palestine.
Also speaking at the gathering, the Amir (President) of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit, Mr Kamoldeen Abiona noted that the current situation in Palestine demands urgent attention and action.
He stated, “the indiscriminate attacks on Gaza have resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis, with thousands of innocent civilians, including women and children, losing their lives or suffering severe injuries.”
“The destruction of crucial civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and residential buildings, further exacerbates the already dire living conditions for Palestinians.
A legal practitioner, Tajudeen Balogun, who also addressed Muslims at the gathering, said it is disheartening that 225 resolutions have been passed on the crisis without implementation
According to him, this contrasts with the situation in Iraq, where the United States claimed weapons of mass destruction, but found none.
Balogun emphasised that the events in Gaza over the past 75 years amount to a violation of human rights.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) said the Hamas’ attack on Israel occurred because the Palestinian people have been pushed to the wall.
The Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, in a statement, called for an immediate ceasefire, urging the global community to address the root of the Palestinian question.
He stated, “Considering the heavy toll on both sides, MURIC calls for an immediate ceasefire. We demand the opening of a humanitarian corridor by Israel in obedience to the United Nations’ call and the appeal made yesterday by the European Union. War is a monster. It makes beasts of men.”
Akintola described ongoing bombardment of Palestine and the blockade of Gaza by Israel as a mere continuation of Israel’s genocidal and apartheid proclivity.
He stated, “MURIC wishes to put the crisis in its proper perspective in view of several false and misleading narratives being pushed to the front burner. This began with the allocation of a larger portion of Palestinian land to Israel in 1947 by the United Nations (UN) which was immediately followed by Israel’s belligerent, expansionist and apartheid policies which have left the Palestinians with only a fraction of the land which belonged to them ab initio
“The UN failed to secure autonomy for Palestine. Only Israel is recognized as a state. The Palestinians have no freedom of movement. Their infrastructure, water, electricity, etc are controlled by Israel and the latter has the power of life and death over every Palestinian citizen. Extra-judicial killing at the hands of Israel is rampant while arbitrary arrests, demolition of Palestinian homes are the order of the day.
“The desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque which is the third holy place of Islam is equally at the root of the crisis. It was these provocations, the acts of injustice and the constant violation of Allah-given fundamental human rights that pushed the Palestinians to the wall.
Saturday’s attack was therefore mere smoke and since there is no smoke without fire, objective people must look beyond the smoke and ask for what actually caused it.
“We reject the notion that Hamas or the Palestinians are terrorists. These are people fighting for their rights. They are freedom fighters. They are out to liberate their people.
They are seeking justice, equal rights and a dignifying existence for every Palestinian. We identify with these noble goals and we assert that justice is the soul of peace. No one can deny one and still enjoy the other.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/10/israel-hamas-muslim-groups-rally-support-for-palestine-in-lagos-call-for-ceasefire-in-gaza/

Politics › Oil Theft: Navy Arrests Tompolo’s Men, Firm Kicks by Grit2943(op): 9:24am On Sep 01, 2023 |
The Nigerian Navy on Tuesday allegedly aborted an attempted oil theft at Lekki Waters and arrested four men identified as men of TANTITA Security Service, owned by a Niger Delta ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.
They were arrested by men of the Nigerian Navy stationed at FOB LEKKI at waterways near the Itolu community, Lekki after the residents of the area raised the alarm following gunshots from the waterside.
While parading the suspects on Wednesday, the Commander of NNS Beecroft, Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga, said they were arrested while they were attacking a local from whom they tried stealing a boat engine.
Oguntuga said, “In a swift response to a distress call, the Nigerian Navy stationed at FOB Lekki foiled an attempted oil theft operation on the waterways near Itolu community, Lekki, in Lagos State.
“The incident occurred in the early hours of August 29, 2023, when local youths reported gunshots in the vicinity of the community.
[b]Reviewing the information, naval patrol teams immediately launched a response operation. Upon arrival at the scene, the naval team met four individuals dressed in black polo shirts with TANTITA inscribed on the back, trying to recover a dismantled outboard engine from a local. The team recovered the engine and apprehended the four Tantita employees.”
“It was after this arrest that the patrol team realised that the four individuals were part of a movement of a large wooden boat with two fibre boats. The four arrested individuals beckoned on the two fibre boats to approach them but when they noticed NN patrol teams, the boats altered courses fled away, and abandoned the large wooden boat laden with 11 x 1000L Geepee tanks with product suspected to be stolen crude oil.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Asonja Goddey (28), Obajimi Oluwaseyifunmi (38), Awoowo Aribo (35), and Oluwadaisi Balogun (40), all hailing from Igbokoda in Ondo State. The owner of the boat they were trying to forcibly employ, Ishola Ojubuyi (42), is also taken into custody.
The Nigerian Navy has initiated an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the possession of firearms used in the community, economic sabotage, how the product came from Ondo State to Lagos State as well as attempting to steal a boat engine from the locals.
“The incident occurred in the early hours of August 29, 2023, when local youths reported gunshots in the vicinity of the community.
“Also, one Mr Owoyele Omotuyi who was identified as a Tantita staff member, came to secure the release of the four apprehended, claiming they were Tantita employees. All suspects along with the confiscated exhibits will be handed over to appropriate agencies for further necessary action and prosecution,” he added.
Meanwhile, the security outfit’s Ondo State Coordinator, Idowu Asonja, in a press statement on Wednesday alleged that their men were after the real culprits who owned the wooden boat laden with crude products.
Asonja also alleged that the NAVY was paid to guide the vessel.
He said, “It is a pathetic and worrisome moment in the western corridor of the Niger Delta states as Nigerian Navy officers arrested four of the Tantita security guards in Ondo/Ogun Zone after the Tantita guards successfully apprehended a wooden vessel fully loaded with crude oil.
“This afternoon, it happens that the Navy security initially were parading a wooden vessel loaded with crude oil, after a while, they released the vessel which was fully loaded with crude oil by some oil thieves
“Meanwhile, the Tantita security guards were monitoring the matter and later bombarded the vessel after discovering that the Navy officers were paid to guide the vessel. This notorious act/display by the Navy officers provoked the Tantita guards in the area to pursue the vessel, which they later succeeded in arresting.
“To our greatest surprise, the owners of the vessel ran away and came back to the scene with some Nigerian Navy officers working at the Dangote Refinery, which resulted in a conflict and finally, the Navy officers attacked my men, later arrested four of the Tantita security guards from Ondo zone, and set free the wooden vessel.”
Federal Government on August 22, 2022, awarded the contract of protecting oil pipelines to TANTITA Security Service, but there has been controversy over the contract with Nigerians disagreeing on whether it should be revoked or not. https://punchng.com/oil-theft-navy-arrests-tompolos-men-firm-kicks/

Politics › Kwara CP Declares Man Who Threatened Traditionalists In Kwara Wanted Terrorist by Grit2943(op): 8:10am On Aug 30, 2023 |
Kwara state Police Commissioner, Ebunoluwarotimi Adelesi has declared one Salam Ayodeji, who allegedly threatened traditionalists in Ilorin, as a terrorist that is wanted by the state Police command.
She gave the family three days to produce the controversial Muslim Cleric adding that the Command has also begun a manhunt to arrest him It is recalled that the suspect had visited the traditionalists, one Tajudeen and his wife, in their shop located at Alaran compound, Ilorin, where the couple sell TV sets. The angry Police Commissioner speaking during a meeting with families of the suspect, Alaran family and that of the traditionalists on Monday, directed family of Ayodeji to produce the suspect for alleged offence of terrorism and defamation against the Police. The police boss, who reprimanded family of Ayodeji for not enlightening their son against what she described as his criminal behaviour, said his attitude was capable of causing breakdown of law and order in the state. “Is it because Tajudeen’s wife is from Osun state. Does that mean she’s a traditionalist? Or is there no Muslims in Osun state” the enraged CP queries. The commissioner also berated Alaran family for driving the couple out of the area and for refunding the rent of the shop to the couple against their wish.
She asked the family of Ayodeji to look for their son and produce him to the command from wherever he might have escaped to latest Wednesday this week, just as she said that the command had begun manhunt for him.
In their reaction, the family members of Ayodeji said that they had been looking for the suspect since Friday last week, when he had not come home while his phone line had not been reachable.Tajudeen, who said that he had resigned to faith and put the whole matter in God’s hands, added that the family of Ayodeji had pleaded with him for forgiveness. Spokesman of Kwara State Police Command Ajayi Okasanmi had earlier told journalists in Ilorin that contrary to the claims of the Muslim Cleric that he had the backing of Commissioner of Police to threaten the suspected traditionalists, that the Police Boss never gave such approval. The Muslim cleric, in a circulated three and half minutes video, had visited a shop said to be owned by a female traditionalist, where fairly used TV sets are sold at Alaran community in Ilorin.
The man, accompanied by some others, were seen in the video boasting that the state commissioner of Police, Ebunoluwarotimi Adelesi, was aware of his visit to the shop.
The Muslim cleric accused the traditionalists of holding traditional religion (isese) meeting inside the shop using the selling of fairly used TV sets as coverup.
He also told the Alaran community, which rented out the shop to the female shop occupant and her people, as shown in the video, to issue quit notice ro the tenant and refund their rent. The man, Ismail Ayodeji, in the video also gave a week deadline for the people to vacate the shop and threatened that his return with others in his group would be catastrophic. The Muslim cleric in white jalabia dress, holding a stick, said that the state commissioner of Police, Ebunoluwarotimi Adelesi, was aware of the visit to the shop. “ We know all your strength. We want you out of here. Move to outskirts of the town to do your thing. When we meet you here next week, we’ll know who owns the land between the two of us. We’ve been told that you were chased out of Oko Olowo area of the state capital for practising traditional religion worshipping before you relocated to this place. Don’t let us meet you here next week when we come back. If not, try me and see.
“We admonish you, the Alaran family to chase them away. We know what we came with. But we only exercised restraint because of you; the Alaran community. So, chase them away before our return. We won’t want the blame to come upon us that you weren’t told. We’ve honoured you enough, the Alaran family. If this shop is opened at all by the time we come back, something else may happen”, he said.
The traditionalists in the shop, who included about five males and a female in the video, only sat down and were refused to speak while the man went on to rain his threat. Some members of the Alaran community, whose voices could also be heard in the three-minute video explained that the people told them that they would only sell fairly used TV sets and not use the place to hold isese meeting. The members of Alaran community also discouraged some of their people who threatened to damage the TV sets during the interaction between the Muslim cleric and the traditionalists. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/08/kwara-cp-declares-man-who-threatened-traditionalists-in-kwara-wanted-terrorist/

Culture › Kwara: Isese Activist, Talolorun, Remanded In Prison For Defaming Emir Of Ilorin by Grit2943(op): 8:43pm On Aug 18, 2023 |
A popular Ilorin Isese devotee and activist Adegbola Abdulazeez, a.k.a. Talọlọrun (Who is God), has been arrested and remanded in jail for defamation, in Kwara State.
Talolorun, was reportedly arrested for insulting the Emir of Ilorin among other offences.
According to a post on his Facebook page Thursday, the popular Isese activist was arrested on August 16 in Ibadan and taken to a police station in Ilorin.
“Taniolorun was arrested in Ibadan this evening (August 16) and taken to a police station in Ilorin,” the post simply read.
Another post on August 17, disclosed that the activist had been charged to court and called on support from other Isese practioners.
The post read: “All Isese practitioners, meet Taniolohun in court in Ilorin. Very urgent.”
A Youtube video released Thursday, also showed Taniolorun discussing the outcome of a prior meeting between Isese practitioners, their lawyer and the police on the ban placed on Isese festivals in Ilorin.
“To those who said we would not celebrate the Isese festival in Ilorin…have you all been served breakfast now?
“We (Isese devotees) went with our lawyer to the police station in Ilorin and everyone involved in this case was served, including the Emir of Ilorin.
“Isese devotees are peace-loving people, we are not troublemakers, we simply wanted to celebrate our festivals but were stopped and asked to seek permission. When Muslims want to celebrate Sallah, do they need permission to do this as well? Why demand that from Isese worshippers?
“The commissioner of police, who said we do not have permission to celebrate our festivals in Ilorinm, has also been served court papers, he should come out and explain where this was stated in the constitution of Nigeria.
“Despite offering to change the location of our festival from the Yemoja river in the state to another, we were still denied this. Is the police not suppose(sic) to support and protect us? Now, the commissioner of police, the Emir of Ilorin, and everyone closely involved in this case have been served court papers.
“The proposed August 20th Isese day will hold even though these emirs have connived with the police to stop the celebration. I received so many threats from online bullies unbeknownst to me, these alfas were conniving with the police to ensure the festival never holds.
“You see at this point, those advocating for Isese devotees to stay away from Ilorin, need to stop. Is there another law besides the Nigerian constitution? We all have the right to worship.
At this point in this land of Ilorin, called the Emirate, the Isese worshippers will have the right to worship as well. Why is it so hard for the alfas to preach peace and allow everyone to celebrate how they wish? Shouldn’t we all be preaching and seeking for peace to reign in the same state we all love?” Talolorun asked
A video by an admin on Talolrun’s page Friday also confirmed Talolrun’s arrest assuring supporters that the popular Isese advocate will regain his freedom.
“Yoruba people celebrating the arrest of Talolorun, did you believe he would not be eventually arrested?
“They have been trying to arrest him for a long time so his arrest did not come as a surprise to us.
He can not be killed because he did not kill anyone. He will be free. He did not rape anyone, he was only sharing his thoughts on the situation of things
“Arresting Talolorun does not mean the world will end. We are fighting for our ancestors. We are fighting for our culture and tradition not to go into extinction.
The economy of Nigeria has continued to dwindle yet none of you is fighting to save the country but when it comes to Isese worship, everyone suddenly has a voice.” https://punchng.com/kwara-popular-isese-activist-talolorun-remanded-in-prison-for-defaming-emir-of-ilorin-0thers/

Politics › Stop Making Only Niger Delta Indigenes Minister Of Petroleum - Yabagi Sani by Grit2943(op): 8:34am On Aug 18, 2023 |
Yabagi Sani, the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assigning a Minister of State for Petroleum Resources from the oil-rich Niger Delta area, insisting it is a ‘wrong signal.’
Sani spoke while appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily breakfast programme on Thursday.
He disclosed that limiting the appointment to a specific state would trigger a sense of entitlement among the Niger Delta people.
Recall that Tinubu on Wednesday released portfolios for 45 ministerial designates.
He appointed Heineken Lokpobiri, who is from Bayelsa, as Minister of State for Petroleum Resources but was silent on the portfolio of the Minister of Petroleum Resources.
“Unfortunately, this sector [Niger Delta] has been made to look as if people that should be appointed to that ministry should come from Niger Delta,” Sani said.
It is a wrong signal because, when you now give people a sense of entitlement, their efficiency becomes something that is not given due attention to.
“I think we must change that scenario, but if he must do that not because I’m from the North Central, why don’t you give the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to an indigene of North Central? – if you must be sensational about such a very important ministry.” https://dailypost.ng/2023/08/17/ministerial-list-wrong-signal-ipac-criticises-tinubu-for-appointing-petroleum-minister-of-state-from-niger-delta/?amp=1

Politics › Cabinet List: Muslim Leaders Storm Lagos Assembly Over Sanwo-Olu’s Lopsidedness by Grit2943(op): 12:13am On Aug 17, 2023 |
Leaders of the Muslim Community in Lagos on Wednesday staged a protest to the State House of Assembly over the recent list of 39 commissioner-nominees released by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The Muslim community had earlier voiced out against the list which has eight Muslims and 31 Christians, saying the list is unfair to the Muslims in the state and demanded a review.
However, the state government had ignored the protest of the Muslims as the House of Assembly on Monday commenced the screening of the nominees.
On Wednesday, leaders of the Muslim Community led by the President and Elderstatesman, Prof. Tajudeen Gbadamosi, stormed the House of Assembly to protest against what they called official discrimination of the Muslims in the state.
Heads of various Islamic organisations and scholars were also in attendance at the protest where Prof. Gbadamosi presented a petition to the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
They were carrying banners and placards with inscriptions such as “Muslims say no to official discrimination,” “All we ask is fairness,” “Stop the Screening Now, we want Justice”, among others.
In the petition read by the President, the Muslims expressed “grievance and dissatisfaction against the blatant disregard for justice, equity and fairness in the proposed Lagos State’ Executive cabinet as contained in the list of commissioner-nominees.
According to the group, the list “is a classic case of discrimination and religious bigotry, as it has 31 nominees who are of the Christian faith and only eight nominees who are Muslims.”
“This is not a new development, especially since Governor Sanwo-Olu assumed leadership of this State, as a matter of fact, it is has been elevated to a level of official state policy to deny Muslims their deserved positions under the Sanwo-Olu administration.
“For instance, in 2019, when Mr. Sanwo-Olu became governor, he appointed 14 Special Advisers, and only one (1) among them was a Muslim. Again, his State Executive Council, which had 43 members, only 14 were Muslims, and the remaining 29 were Christians. Also, of the 23 commissioners, 10 were Muslims and 13 of them Christians. Only 15 Muslims, with 35 Christians, made up the body of 50 Permanent Secretaries in his first term. These are just a few among numerous ways in which the Sanwo-Olu administration deny Muslims in this state their rightful place and number in leadership.”
The Muslim Community observed that Sanwo-Olu’s violates the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria particularly Section 14(4) and section 192(2).
The sections say: “The composition of the Government of a State, a local government council, or any of the agencies of such Government or council, and the conduct of the affairs of the Government or council or such agencies shall be carried out in such manner as to recognise the diversity of the people within its area of authority and the need to promote a sense of belonging and loyalty among all the peoples of the Federation.”
192(2) Any appointment to the office of Commissioner of the Government of a State shall, if the nomination of any person to such office is confirmed by the House of Assembly of the State, be made by the Governor of that State and in making any such appointment the Governor shall conform with the provisions of section 14(4) of this Constitution.”
Gbadamosi said, “With due respect Governor Sanwo-Olu’s list clearly violates these provisions of the Constitution and we accordingly call upon this honorable House not to endorse any action that violates our national grundnorm, especially one which equally violates good conscience and natural justice.
The argument that Muslims have more elected officials in Lagos State in preposterous. This is even more so at a time when all the Six (6) Governors of the southwest are Christians and we the Muslims do not complain about this, because we recognise that they contested for offices and won.
“Why must Muslims in Lagos State always beg and fight for their constitutional rights especially since Mr Sanwo-olu became Governor? We recall with utmost sadness really, that until the Supreme Court ruled in favour of hijab for our school girls, successive Lagos Governments, never felt it should endeavor to align with the global best practice of accepting hijab in addition to abiding with the rule of law.
The historic pro-hijab judgement was delivered in March 2022 and globally acknowledged. However, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s government in its peculiar idiosyncrasy chose to ignore this until a year later, after ceaseless pressure was mounted by well-meaning individuals.
“We the Muslims of, and in Lagos State wish to categorically state that the entire leadership of the Muslim Community of Lagos State representing various Muslim organizations, unequivocally and unanimously reject the list of commissioner-designates of Governor Sanwo-Olu and we demand a reversal and review to reflect 60% in favour of Muslims in a fresh list.
We call on the Lagos State House of Assembly to reject the list as similarly done in the Niger State House of Assembly, where a noticeably minority Christian population demanded a reversal of the list of commissioners to reflect fairness and equity to them. We also call on you and the House of Assembly to impress on the government the need to respect the diversity of the state’s population and to appoint a more representative cabinet. We believe that this is essential for the future stability and prosperity of Lagos State.” https://dailytrust.com/cabinet-list-muslim-leaders-storm-lagos-assembly-over-sanwo-olus-lopsidedness/

Culture › Take Isese Festival Elsewhere, Kwara Police Urges Worshippers by Grit2943(op): 9:55pm On Aug 14, 2023 |
The Kwara State Police Command has urged the worshipers of the indigenous traditional religion otherwise known as Isese to relocate the festival planned for celebration on August 20, 2023, in Kwara state to other areas of the country saying that the security situation in the state is not favourable for such celebration.
The Command in a statement issued on Monday evening and signed by SP Okasanmi Ajayi, Police Public Relations Officer said that the Command has met with the worshipers and had advised them to find a suitable place in another state in the country for the celebration.
The statement reads, “Vigilante, local hunters, community policing members, and the leadership of the traditional worshippers in Kwara, along with some of their leaders from adjoining states, have also been dialogued with and made to understand that the intelligence available to the Police Command does not favor the kind of celebrations being planned by one of the religious sects in the state; they have been advised to relocate their celebration to another state pending a favorable security situation in the state.”
The Command said that it has planned to implement a new strategy to ensure harmonious living among the people and put criminal activities at bay in all areas of the state adding that a 24-hour stop and search would be conducted by the Police on people and vehicles in the state.
“In continuation of the Kwara State Police Command’s onerous effort to ensure a safe and secure State for the good people of Kwara, the Commissioner of Police Kwara State Command, CP. Ebunoluwarotimi Adelesi psc+, FISN held a meeting with Service Commanders, comprising heads of all security agencies in the state, where the security situation of the state was discussed and existing strategies dissected, where every t was crossed and all the ‘i’ was dotted.
“New security plans have been implemented across the length and breadth of Kwara State. One of the strategies to put crime and criminality at bay in the state is ‘Harmony Security Week. This operation will include aggressive stop and search, motorized, and foot patrols on a 24-hour basis.
“To this end, the CP is using this medium to put the good people of Kwara State on notice of the special security operation and advise the people not to panic or be apprehensive when confronted with the policemen on the assignment but to comport themselves and submit themselves for body and vehicular searches whenever they are asked to do so.
The officers deployed for the assignment have been trained and warned to respect the rights of the citizens in the process of carrying out their duties.
“The Command warns would-be lawbreakers in whatever guise and nomenclature to steer clear of Kwara State, as anyone found in any manner constituting himself or herself a security threat would be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement said. https://punchng.com/take-isese-festival-elsewhere-kwara-police-urges-worshippers/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1692043877

It is the fact the CBN is owing way more than the profits it declared. Simply put, the apex bank has a deficit balance sheet, if those debts should be settled outright.
