Brazil star Ronaldinho has apologised for his lacklustre performances at the World Cup finals. cool

The World Footballer of the Year was among the tournament's biggest disappointments after being tipped to take the competition by storm.

He failed to take any game by the scruff of the neck and only briefly demonstrated his class in the 4-1 group success over Japan.

Ronaldinho also delivered a tame performance as Brazil relinquished their World Cup title with a quarter final defeat to France.

The Barcelona ace has expressed his dismay at failing to fulfil the high expectations for him in Germany.

But the 26-year-old is determined to reclaim Brazil's world crown when the tournament heads to South Africa in four years' time.

"Many people were waiting for a brilliant performance from Brazil and myself and that didn't happen," said Ronaldinho.

"I am very sorry that we left the competition without showing our quality and what we are capable of doing.

"Nothing that I can say now will change what happened and even less the feeling of the people. wink

"That's why the only thing that I have to say is I am sorry. sad

"We couldn't win the World Cup this time, but with the support of everyone we will correct the mistakes that we had and we will be stronger in 2010." undecided

Materazzi denies Zidane jibe!

Italy defender Marco Materazzi has strenuously denied reports that he called Zinedine Zidane a 'dirty terrorist'.

The 32-year-old was responding to suggestions made by the Paris-based anti-racism group SOS Racism that he apparently used the phrase seconds before the France captain head-butted Materazzi in the chest in extra time.

Zidane was sent off as a result of his actions before the Azzurri went on to defeat Les Bleus 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 extra-time draw in Sunday's World Cup final in Berlin.

SOS Racism claim well informed sources told them of what Materazzi allegedly said to the now-retired Zidane, but the Internazionale player denies making any such statement to the former Real Madrid man.

"It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist," Materazzi told Italian news agency Ansa.

"I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means.

"The whole world saw what happened on live TV."

Referee Horacio Elizondo  kiss kiss says he sent Wayne Rooney  huh off against Portugal because of his stamp on Ricardo Carvalho  wink lipsrsealed

The Argentina official was caught in the middle of what turned out to be a pivotal moment of Saturday's World Cup quarter final, as England were eventually knocked out on penalties in Gelsenkirchen.

His decision to show the Manchester United star a red card proved a major influence on England's exit from Germany 2006, with Elizondo insisting his decision to send off Rooney was not influenced by Portugal's ensuing protests.

It leaves Cristiano Ronaldo in the clear after Rooney's Manchester United team-mate was initially accused of trying to persuade the South American to show the England striker a red card.

"It was violent play and therefore he got a red card," Elizondo told The Times.

"People can say what they want, but this had absolutely no influence.

"In general, I don't pay much attention to that sort of thing because I don't care about the pressure on my shoulders during a match.

"For me, it was a clear red card, so I didn't react to the Portuguese players.

"There was pushing and shoving on both sides, but for me it wasn't a reason to caution anybody.

"Sven Goran Eriksson went to the locker-room after the match and congratulated me for an excellent performance and said that I was right to send off Rooney because it was rough play."

Rooney protested his innocence over his actions, but Elizondo's admission is likely to do little to help the former Everton goalscorer's chances of avoiding an international suspension.

The controversy surrounding the sending off of Rooney has not bothered Elizondo, claiming he takes little notice to the attentions of the media.

"I've never thought about it and to be honest, I don't care," he added.

"If people or newspapers would like to create stories like that, it's up to them. I really don't care."
