The Edo delegate challenged the census figures of Northern Nigeria. ————————————- A mild uproar broke out at the National Conference on Wednesday following a threat by former Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, Ibrahim Ahmed, to arrest a delegate from Edo State, Chris Agbonwanegbe, for challenging the census figure of Northern Nigeria. Mr. Agbonwanegbe, who was contributing to the report of the Conference Committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government, had challenged the census figures bandied by states in the North. He called on delegates to address the injustice that led to the creation of more states and local governments in the North as against what is obtainable in the South. Mr. Agbonwanegbe made a specific reference to the disparity in the number of local governments in Kano and Lagos states. He argued that while Lagos has the highest number of people in Nigeria, it has only 20 local government areas, while Kano with a lower population has 44. As the Edo delegate was addressing the Conference, his Northern counterparts shouted and rebuked him for daring to challenge the population of Kano. But Mr. Agbonwanegbe stood his ground and insisted that sustainable development would continue to elude the country if steps are not taken to conduct reliable census to gather data for national planning and development. He, however, lamented that Nigeria does not have the capacity to conduct a free and credible census, and suggested that the United Nations, UN, be invited to conduct census for the country. He noted that if the UN is allowed to conduct a credible census, the country would have correct figures that would finally put the long years of population disparity to rest. Mr. Agbonwanegbe said, “I did my National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, programme in the North. So, I know what I saw during my service years. I can authoritatively tell you that there is injustice in this country. “How can a state like Katsina or Kano have more local government areas than Lagos which has the highest population? It is obvious that there is injustice and this should be addressed. “From previous censuses we have had, it is obvious that Nigeria cannot conduct a credible census. We need to invite the United Nations to help us in conducting a census that will be accepted by everyone and finally put the argument about the region with the highest number to a rest.” Mr. Agbonwanegbe’s submission did not go down well with many delegates from the North who almost threw caution to the wind in a bid to stop him from speaking further on the matter. While the Northern delegates screamed and raised a point of order to stop the Edo delegate from continuing to speak, Conference Chairman, Idris Kutigi, ignored them. But the former AIG, Mr. Ahmed who could not hold back his anger flouted the rule of the house by screaming, “Arrest him! Arrest him now!” Mr. Ahmed remained on his feet shouting, thereby polarizing the Conference along Northern and Southern lines. While the delegates raved and ranted, another Kano delegate, Junaid Mohammed, went and met with Mr. Agbonwanegbe and two of them walked out of the chamber, holding hands and talking. As the duo were leaving the chamber, some Northern delegates castigated Mr. Kutigi for refusing to stop the Edo delegate from challenging the population of Kano State. Not long after, former governor of Ogun State, Segun Osoba, re-echoed the position of Mr. Agbonwanegbe and called for the reversal of the injustice he said characterized the number of local government councils in some parts of the country. Mr. Osoba drew attention to Lagos State, which he said contributes more than 80 per cent to the nation’s Value Added Tax, VAT, yet does not have the required number of local government areas unlike states in the North. “The era of trying to manipulate census figure is over. With the help of Google, we can now get the number of people in a particular area. We can use that to conduct our census. I do not subscribe to the fact that the United Nations should conduct our census for us.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/164280-uproar-at-confab-as-former-police-aig-threatens-to-arrest-delegate.html |

The Federal Government on Thursday said it has no plan to increase the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as fuel, from its current rate of N97 per litre. The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Danladi Kifasi, dismissed growing fears in some quarters about an impending price hike, describing it as unfounded. Kifasi, in a statement, said, “We would like to appeal to oil marketers to refrain from hoarding of petroleum products and the general public from panic buying in anticipation of any increase in pump price. “It is equally important to state that neither the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources nor any of its parastatal is under any instruction to activate a new pump price regime as being speculated.” The permanent secretary further warned petroleum product marketers to desist from creating any scarcity so as to induce panic in the system with the aim of exploiting unsuspecting members of the public. He said, “The relevant agencies of government including the Department of Petroleum Resources and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have been directed to deal with offenders.” Kifasi assured that the NNPC and its downstream flagship company, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company had made enough arrangements to ensure that the entire nation remains wet with petroleum products round the clock in 2014. http://www.punchng.com/news/no-plan-to-increase-fuel-price-fg/ |

Ajiboye told journalists on Thursday in Ibadan that the federal government had with this started implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reached with the union. “It is encouraging that the salary arrears have been paid to members, and I believe this cuts across board. “Right now, members are ready to go back to work. We however expect government to be sincere in fulfilling other aspects of the MOU,’’ he said. shdemidemi: Fasting and praying is good as long as you don't attach it to receiving mundane returns. The idea of restricting people from eating for 100 days for their father to shape their destiny is what should raise questions for any discerning member of the mystical body of Christ.Thank you for your response. I need some clarification in the following happenings in the New Testament: 1. Why did Jesus fasted for 40days and 40nights before he started his ministry? Note that the 100days declared by the church is less than Jesus' 40days and 40nights (in the church's guidance for this fasting, 30days and 30nights is equivalent to the 100days) 2. Why do you think Jesus told his disciples that some deeds cannot be done except through prayer and fasting? Your clarifications will be highly appreciated. |
shdemidemi: Study (be diligent, investigate and be distinguished), be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.I can see that you are very vast with the bible probably more than I do. Could you please let me know if it is unbiblical to fast and pray? Could you also let me know if it is unbiblical to fast for a long period such as the 100days declared by the church? Thank you. |
anonimi: Adeboye's declaration of fasting WITHOUT SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE and VERIFIABLE outcome for the participants is simply a scam.2 Kings 13:15-19 "And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows. And he took unto him bow and arrows. And he said to the king of Israel; Put thine hand upon the bow. And he put his hand upon it: and Elisha put his hands upon the king's hands. And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, The arrow of the Lord's deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them. And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed. And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice." (KJV) The 'bow and arrows' in the days of Elisha could be seen today as 'fasting and prayers'. Like the Syrianns in Aphek, there are enemies in our land, in our family, in the Church and even in our lives that must be smitten. The siege is inevitable if they are not totally destroyed. As we take our bow and arrows, we will not shoot for awhile and stop like the king of Israel erroneously acted. But we will shoot again and again "till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed." These One Hundred Days of fasting and prayers are days of "the arrow of the Lord's deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from our enemies: we shalt smite the enemies around us till we have consumed them.Just as Elisha was sent to the king, God has sent our father-in- the- Lord, Daddy E. I booked a Dana flight from Lagos to Abuja. I got to the airport at about 5:28am this morning and waited for about 15mins on the line only to be told that the airline is not flying today. We were all asked to fill forms and collect our money. I just collected my refund. Information has it that the airline crash landed at PH airport last night. Hence, the suspension of its operating license over night. |

Lagos belongs to the Tinubus JUNE 27, 2013 BY ABIMBOLA ADELAKUN (AA_ADELAKUN@UTEXAS.EDU) 183 COMMENTS Lagos belongs to the Tinubus | credits: File copy “This new development portends great danger for our democracy and indeed Lagos integrity. We are thus calling on the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, not to sit on the fence at this auspicious time. Fashola must rise up and be counted now. He must exhibit control in governance especially when Tinubu’s interest conflicts with the public interest. He must see to it that the process leading to the emergence of a market leader and any other leadership in the state is transparent, liberal and credible.” —Lagos State Chapter of the PDP Life has some pleasantly ironic moments. Before the Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party woke up to the news that the former governor of the state, Bola Tinubu, was about to install his daughter as the Iyaloja of Lagos, who could have thought the party would ever understand –or even acknowledge- that anything portends “great danger” to Nigerian democracy? Or, that the party would even canvass a process that is “transparent, liberal and credible?” These are surely interesting times we live in. Since the PDP put out its press release, part of which was quoted above, there has been some robust discourse on the social media about whether another Tinubu should step into the shoes of the late Abibatu Mogaji, “pioneer Iyaloja/President-General of Nigerian Market Men and Women” who held the prestigious position for many years even when she was old and frail; and at 96, was clearly incapable of functioning in that role with as much vitality as she would have exuded in her younger years. The PDP, on getting to know about the announcement purportedly made at Mogaji’s burial, panicked and quickly issued the press release I excerpted above. It does not quite seem it has awoken to the reality that Lagos is Tinubu’s property; from there his influence extends to other states in South-West Nigeria. He is the go-to godfather of the region such that men like Lamidi Adedibu who once trod that path look like upstarts when contrasted with him. My advice to the PDP is to cease its caterwauling and focus its energies on winning the 23 states President Goodluck Jonathan recently stipulated as their 2015 target. For now, not much will change as regards the ownership of Lagos political structure. The Tinubus own a lot and like the proverbial greedy man who insists on acquiring every parcel of land that touches his land, they keep expanding. It is not for nothing that Tinubu was assigned an anti-democratic title of “Governor Emeritus.” There are similar examples of such labels created by fawning Nigerians to massage the egos of their leaders who are obviously plagued by the Mugabe Complex. This attitude, taken in its entirety, illustrates the intractable problems of leadership in Africa. The Mugabe Complex is a fear of ordinariness; a symptom exhibited by people in power who just do not want to be out of the picture. In their minds, they are the awaited messiahs so they impose themselves on people by every means possible. Such people jump from Governor to Senator; from First Lady, they become Permanent Secretaries or Mother-of-the-nation; or transform into tribal leaders and godfathers. They practically configure the state finances to lead to their pockets. They clog the state machinery so that those who succeed them in office would have to contact them for solutions. Leaders from this part of the world who are plagued by the Mugabe Complex lack virtue. They do not walk away when they complete their tenure; rather, they create enough problems so that we can always look back wistfully at their tenure. They cannot even stand successors who outshine them in performance. They will do anything, as long as it gives them continued relevance and help them exhibit a sense of patriarchal proprietary over their constituencies. During the 2011 elections, not a few people were astounded at how the former governor reportedly put forward members of his family in the Lagos State elections when it was quite certain they would win since their party controlled the state. If it had been a PDP leader who was taking advantage in that manner, it would be an opportunity for the Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Lai Mohammed, to gallop on his high horse over and over again. He would have issued his famous press releases to “yab” the party and then self-righteously proclaim a fatwa on them. That is one of the reasons the PDP is an easier party to understand than the ACN; it has no progressive agenda that enables it to pretend. The classic opposition-to-the-rescue image the ACN has created for itself over the years has enabled it and its Big Daddies to evade a lot of scrutiny. The ACN has tried to play down the Iyaloja story by pretending that it has bigger fishes to hunt than the leadership of mere markets. That kind of attitude –pretended or otherwise — is wrong. Whoever eventually emerges as the Iyaloja is important, actually. The post is a culturally created one but considering how traditional market systems are a vital component of our existence, it’s not a trivial one. A scholar, Manthia Diawara, pointed out that the traditional market system poses the greatest obstacle to modernity in Africa and should be coopted into efforts made at building modern societies. The traditional market system forms a significant part of cultural life that we cannot divorce from our corporate-contemporary existence. They are important gateways to trade and globalisation. Markets, anthropologically considered, represent interwoven strands of primitiveness and modernity in our societies. How far our country will go can be determined from the dynamics of these markets. In Nigeria where manufacturing efforts are low, what constitutes our economy owes a lot to the markets. I hope the ACN treats the market system with more deference than the political advantages accruable from the office of the Iyaloja. As things go, I am not hopeful the PDP can achieve much by seeking Fashola’s intervention. In 2011, people grumbled out quite loudly about a leadership that was inbreeding to the point of incest, but then what? The Tinubu family members still won with a landslide. The grumblings ceased and life continued. If the post of Iyaloja gets ceded to another Tinubu, people will murmur and live with it. If anything will change, it should –and will — come from Lagosians themselves. Lagosians are sophisticated people and when they have had enough, they will do the needful. http://www.punchng.com/viewpoint/lagos-belongs-to-the-tinubus/ |

Police kill 7 suspected abductors of Lagos council boss, nab 2 on JUNE 24, 2013 · in NEWS 9:44 pm Share BY EVELYN USMAN LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has smashed a kidnap syndicate comprising nine Nigerians based in Ghana. They are said to have been responsible for the kidnap of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area boss, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, two months ago and a Federal High Court Judge. In the process, seven suspected members of the syndicate were killed during a gun battle, yesterday. Two suspected members of the gang were also arrested at their hideout in Agbara area of Ogun State, while an Indian national identified as Vivex Changrani, said to have been kidnapped Sunday, was rescued. The suspects Recovered at the end of the gun battle said to have lasted 30 minutes, were four AK 47 riffles, two of which had police identification mark, 28 AK 47 magazines fully loaded, more than 1,000 rounds of AK- 47 live ammunition, army uniforms and two vehicles — a Honda CRV SUV with number plate ABC 106 AE and a Nissan Pathfinder SUV with number plate AGL 730 AZ. How the syndicate was smashed Briefing newsmen on how the syndicate met its waterloo, the command’s boss, Mr Umar Manko, said: “Remember when the LCDA chairman was kidnapped, I promised Lagosians we were going to arrest the kidnappers. “We got information that these kidnappers were based in Ghana and all efforts to arrest them in Ghana failed because that country had her procedure and they insisted we could not just go there to make any arrest. “We went to Ghana with a team of International Policemen, INTERPOL, but after 31 days without a headway, our policemen returned to Nigeria. “Based on painstaking follow-up and surveillance in tracking these kidnappers, men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad discovered their hideout in Agbara two weeks ago. “The Commander SARS, Mr Abba Kyari, led a team of crack detectives to a suburb in Agbara where the kidnappers had their camp. “After 72 hours of waiting in ambush, the men cordoned off, then stormed the house where all the kidnappers gathered by 3 am, yesterday.” Modus oparandi The kidnappers’ modus operandi, as gathered, included dressing in full military uniform, pretending to be military personnel. They would thereafter, kidnap their victims, pretending to be taking them to a military base , only to take them to their hideout, from where they would start negotiating for ransom. In some cases where they usually experience gridlock, some of them would reportedly jump down from their operational vehicle to clear the way, pretending to be conveying a military officer. After each successful kidnap, they would reportedly share their loot before leaving for Ghana. Preliminary investigation, according to Police sources, revealed that the kidnappers usually give their loot to a Bureau de-change operator after each successful deal who thereafter takes it to them in Ghana. $100,000 paid as ransom for Bamigbetan’s release It was gathered that a total of $100,000 was collected by the gang as ransom for the release of the Ejigbo LCDA boss. Leader of the syndicate whose identity was given as Jonah Benjamin Osinachi, was said to have collected $50,000 while the other members shared $50,000. One of the suspects who gave his name as Uchenna Nwanyu (25), admitted working for leader of the syndicate. According to him, “Jonah whom we usually called China (pointing to his boss’ corpse) sent for me from Ghana. I came with his wife and children and lodged in a hotel. I went to his place (Agbara) on Sunday because he said he was expecting his goods. I was there when they were about going for an operation. They all tied charms on their wastes, danced round a liquid substance which they later poured on their heads before leaving the house, wearing their army uniforms with guns. They later came back with a white man whom they pushed inside a room and ordered me to stay with him. They, thereafter, said they would call the man’s relatives the next day (yesterday) for ransom. The rescue operation “I was in the room with the man when I heard gunshots. I even helped the man by telling him to lie on the floor so as not to be hit by stray bullets. I later heard footsteps as they all tried to escape. When the gunshots died down, I went out, only to see the policemen. I was even the one that showed them where the kidnapped man was. “I knew my boss was a kidnapper but I could not do anything about that because he was the source of my livelihood. I also worked for him in Ghana. I am in charge of his building which is under construction in Ghana and his restaurant.” The second suspect, Ogbonna Emenike, who disclosed that he was only released from prison last Monday over a case of robbery, said he was lured into the gang because of hunger. Although he denied taking part in the abduction, Uchenna said he was one of those who came in with the kidnapped Indian in the early hours of Monday. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/06/police-kill-7-suspected-abductors-of-lagos-council-boss-nab-2/ |
President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated pro-government candidate Bobboi Kaigama of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) on his election yesterday as President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Mr. Jonathan welcomed Mr. Kaigama’s declaration that under his leadership the TUC will work with the government and private sector employers for the benefit of workers and all Nigerians. Returning the compliment, Mr. Jonathan said he and the Federal Government would cooperate with Mr. Kaigama and his new team to fulfill this commitment and enhance cordial industrial relations in Nigeria in furtherance of the present administration’s agenda for “national transformation.” Kaigama’s election comes with considerable controversy that may seriously embarrass the government. To begin with, Kaigama, a Director in the Taraba State civil service, was relieved of his post prior to the election, accused of suspected involvement in Boko Haram activities. He is currently challenging the allegations in court, but with President Jonathan’s endorsement, it is unlikely that case will be fairly heard. In the contest, against Comrade Babatunde Ogun of PENGASSAN, he had the active support of Comrade Peter Esele, a pro-government operative who deployed everything in his arsenal to stop Comrade Ogun from succeeding him as the President General of TUC. Esele operated through the group known as G-Force, which is led mainly by ASCSN, with seven unions in its fold. Esele is also said to have vowed never to permit Ogun, to take over the helms of TUC because of Ogun's “disloyalty” during an incident at the first anniversary of the fuel subsidy strike action of January 2012. Despite the heavy artillery of the government and Comrade Esele behind Kaigama, some labour affiliates say he was ineligible to contest the position in the first place as he belonged to the management cadre, citing international best practices to support the argument he should not even preside over a labour association let alone lead a robust labour centre. With that in mind and the apparent willingness of Esele's NAC to entertain the breach, the labour affiliates sent a protest letter to the Minister of Labour. But Esele, working through the office of the Secretary to the Federal Government, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, subverted the protest by instructing the Ministry to ignore the protest and portray Ogun as an enemy of the state. Going further, Esele also went to the President’s Chief of Staff and other aides to tell them that Ogun is against Jonathan's presidency and re-election, offering as “proof” Ogun’s readiness to be a willing tool in the hands of the opposition during the subsidy protest, and suggesting that he is Yoruba, and therefore anti- South-South. Peter Esele has not been a popular trade union figure in the country since January 2012 when, along with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Abdulwaheed Omar, he helped to abort the popular “Occupy Nigeria” protest against the government. A source revealed to SaharaReporters shocking details of how the leadership of the TUC and the NLC conspired to undermine and kill the mass movement following the sudden increase in the pump price of petrol from N75.OO to N140.OO. After the collapse of the protest and in view of the deaths of some protesters, Esele faced considerable outrage about having sold out to the government, including on Tweet where he could not defend himself successful. Comrade Esele ran to his PENGASSAN constituency for assistance in the form of a rebuttal of the damning allegations against him but met a brick wall from the Ogun-led executive. Whilst PENGASSAN was waiting to have a NEC resolution on its participation in the subsidy protest, Esele was alleged to be telling members of the public especially PENGASSAN's national PRO monitoring the protest in Abuja that the government was not taking the protest seriously because PENGASSAN was yet to come on board. He also subtly instigated the militant wing of PENGASSAN to endorse the gradual winding down of the wells as a tool to pressurise the government. And after using the situation to curry financial benefits from President Jonathan's government, he made a U-turn with his NLC counterpart in a press statement to say PENGASSAN could not go on strike without TUC directing such action, barely two hours after PENGASSAN NEC at great personal risks in Abuja in the midst of heavy security presence endorsed a programmed strike action. After the leadership of PENGASSAN refused to write a rejoinder to save Esele's dented public image, the TUC President General reached out to President Jonathan and other forces to undermine PENGASSAN's aspirations to provide TUC leadership. One argument presents is that the oil work force faced massive unemployment if the Petroleum Industry Bill, which vests enormous powers in the Minister of Petroleum Resources is passed in its present form. PENGASSAN has repeatedly stated its preference for a well-articulated law with less government interference which would create a more conducive environment for both local and international players in the oil sector for the benefit of the masses. The Harmony Group, which supported Ogun in yesterday’s elections, has 10 unions in its fold and is led mainly by PENGASSAN; the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions; Air Traffic Senior Staff Association of Nigeria; Chemical and Metal Products Senior Staff Association; and the Food, Beverages and Tobacco Senior Staff Association, among others. From the delegates strength of the unions in each group, Harmony Group appeared poised to carry the day in a free and fair contest, given that it had over 400 of about 700 delegates for the election, in contrast to the G Force’s less than 300. Esele, sensing defeat, then resorted to a variety of tricks to thwart the Harmony Group, including threats, coercion and intimidation of persons and unions in the group, sponsoring of petitions against certain persons, and blackmail of Ogun to the presidency. In the end, the election was elevated from a contest of ideas between two people seeking to lead a labour centre to one involving the government and impinging on Mr. Jonathan’s election prospects in 2015. Our sources say Esele's desperation is traceable to the fear that if Ogun won the election, he would probe him over the use of the N1billion he collected from the Jonathan government to buy buses and establish a TUC mass transit company to ease the transportation woes of the masses following the subsidy removal last year. In his congratulatory message today, President Jonathan expressed the faith that with Mr. Kaigama’s notable antecedents, excellent credentials as a labour leader and experience as President of the large Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, he is fully equipped to succeed as President of one of the two major conglomerations of trade unions in the country.” http://saharareporters.com/news-page/president-jonathan-congratulates-pro-government-candidate-kaigama-over-flawed-tuc-election |
CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi By SaharaReporters, New York Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, appears unable to shake off a report that he funneled public funds to Maryam Yaro, a married mistress whom he gave a job at the bank he oversees. Premium Times was first to report the scandal in which Mr. Sanusi was accused of abusing his office in order to advance an amorous relationship with a woman. Several sources told SaharaReporters that Premium Times has been under intense pressure from associates of the CBN Governor since the expose was published. In the wake of the report, the CBN also issued a widely circulated rebuttal claiming that Ms. Yaro was never a staff of the bank, that she was employed at Nigeria Incentive-based Risk Sharing Systems For Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), and that the governor had no hand in her recruitment. But records obtained by SaharaReporters suggest that the bank’s claims are an attempt to muddle up the facts. NIRSAL, to which Ms. Yaro is attached, is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) set up by the Federal Government through a partnership between the CBN and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. Besides, the project is domiciled in the Development Finance Department of the CBN. It is the CBN’s human resource department that hires staff for NIRSAL, and it is Mr. Sanusi who approves all recruitments into the agency, insiders say. Records available to us indeed showed that, contrary to the CBN’s claims, Mr. Sanusi directly and personally approved Ms. Yaro’s recruitment. Investigations by SaharaReporters revealed that, after approving Ms. Yaro’s hiring and sending her file back to the bank’s human resource department, Mr. Sanusi sent a message to his mistress on June 25, 2012 saying, “I’m in South Africa. I approved your recruitment last week.” Ten minutes later, Ms. Yaro responded: “You have made my day. Thank you so much. Let me know when you are back.” When the human resource department delayed in sending her appointment letter, Ms. Yaro contacted Mr. Sanusi to complain. “I have not heard anything from CBN since you approved my recruitment,” she wrote in a July 9, 2012 message. “Is there anything I need to do?” A source told SaharaReporters that, following her complaint, Mr. Sanusi contacted the CBN human resource department urging them to expedite action on her case. Eight days later, on July 17, 2012, Ms. Yaro informed Mr. Sanusi that the human resource department had finally acted on his instruction. “Allah nguro, I have been issued my letter of offer,” she said in a message. “Thank you so much. When can I come and see you?” When she submitted her acceptance letter to human resource, Ms. Yaro promptly informed Mr Sanusi and thanked him again for helping her to get the job. After Ms. Yaro assumed duties at the CBN headquarters in Abuja, the human resource department produced a business card for her. In it she was described as follows: “Dr. Maryam W. Yaro, Nirsal Project Implementation Office (NPIO), Development Finance Department, Central Bank of Nigeria.” Even the documents released by the CBN are clear as to whether Ms. Yaro could be regarded as a staff of the CBN, and whether the governor played a role in her recruitment. For instance, official memos detailing the processes leading to her recruitment are marked “internal,” originating from NIRSAL to other units of the bank. Her appointment letter, written on CBN letterhead, was signed by Chizoba Mojekwu, director, human resources department of the bank. The CBN’s so-called rebuttal did not say why its human resource director would sign an appointment letter for a staff or consultant of another agency independent of the bank. In its rebuttal, the bank provided evidence of communications leading to Ms. Yaro’s employment in 2012, but provided none relating to any public announcement of the vacancy she filled. The law requires that such a post must be publicly announced to enable interested candidates to apply. The details show that the bank treated Ms. Yaro’s employment expressly, with memos between NIRSAL office and CBN’s top management indicating how Mr. Sanusi endorsed her recruitment. In one document seen by SaharaReporters, a helpless staff of the bank raised concern about Ms. Yaro’s recruitment. In a memo requesting Mr. Sanusi’s approval of the recruitment, the concerned staff minuted: “Please approve as prayed above. We should take into account diversity in future recruitment.” In approving the recruitment, Mr. Sanusi dismissed the staff’s concern, and wrote: “Approved. I think gender is a good basis for diversity here and candidate is qualified.” Ms. Yaro’s recruitment process took a matter of weeks, and she received her letter of offer in July 17, 2012 and promptly communicated same to the CBN boss while also informing him of her planned date of assumption of duties. Some sources within the CBN suggested to SaharaReporters that some of the documents circulated by the CBN were forged and backdated as a face-saving measure. However, SaharaReporters was unable to independently confirm the allegation. SaharaReporters learned that the details of the affair between Mr. Sanusi and Ms. Yaro have stirred anger and outrage within the bank and beyond. Critics have focused on the fact that Mr. Sanusi, a public officer, traveled on jets funded by taxpayers to keep appointments with Ms. Yaro at expensive hotels. Until this scandal broke, Mr. Sanusi was highly respected even if some of his policies, like doling cash to victims of terrorist attacks in Kano, were controversial. Mr. Sanusi led revolutionary reforms in the banks when he came on board in 2009 and has remained critical and outspoken on several government policies despite serving in the administration. He has also repeatedly advocated adherence to the rule of law. On the other hand, Mr. Sanusi has had his defenders. Many of these defenders have brushed aside glaring evidence of misconduct by Nigeria’s chief banker, instead accusing news reporters who worked on the story of witch-hunting Mr. Sanusi and attempting to defame him. Senior officials of Premium Times said they expected the backlash, even as they stated that they stood firmly by their story. “We knew the story was going to shock a lot of people,” said Idris Akinbajo acting managing editor at the publication. “We were under no illusion that it would take a lot of time for many to swallow the bitter truth of the revelations made in the story.” He added, “We have discharged our responsibility of providing information we believe citizens need in order to hold officials accountable. Mr. Akinbajo continued, “Our job is done, as we will only continue to provide additional information as necessary. It is left for Nigerians to either demand accountability or live without it – and so continue to celebrate the indiscretions of their leaders.” The executive added: “We stand firmly by our story and look forward to the moment the CBN Governor will boldly look Nigerians in the face and say any of the things we reported did not happen.” http://saharareporters.com/news-page/nigeria’s-central-bank-governor-sanusi-unable-shake-sex-scandal-more-evidence-surface |
A new plan by President Goodluck Jonathan to grant amnesty to members of the violent Boko Haram sect has upset Nigeria’s military chiefs. Sources at the Presidential Villa, where the military brass met with the President for several hours today, said they tried in vain to convince Mr. Jonathan not to fall into the trap that has been set for him by prominent northern leaders on the issue. They were said to have told him the security implications of the action and that it could also be interpreted to mean that the President is not a man of his word. Mr. Jonathan has flip-flopped on federal policy against Boko Haram since he took office in 2010. The military bosses reminded him of his words when he visited Borno State a few weeks ago when he said that there was no way he would grant amnesty to ghosts, stressing that nothing has changed. Mr. Jonathan once said there were members of Boko Haram in his government, but it is not clear if they are still ghosts or he has identified them. He was also said to have been reminded that many of their men and other security officers have been indiscriminately killed, warning him that telling the rank and file the decision on amnesty could ignite anger in the barracks. At the end of the lengthy discussion, which lasted for five hours, the President had his way against the genuine advice of the military chiefs, except one. He set up a committee to handle the issue of amnesty. The committee, whose members are yet to be announced, is to work with the office of the National Security Adviser. A Presidential source said that the committee will consider the feasibility or otherwise of granting pardon to the Boko Haram members and collate the views of those clamouring for amnesty, as well as recommend modalities for the granting of pardon should such a policy be adopted. President Jonathan seems to have adopted the argument of the northern elements after meeting with some of their prominent members in Abuja on Wednesday night. Although today he seem highly disposed to the amnesty idea, he is known to change his mind fairly easily. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/military-chiefs-outraged-over-jonathan’s-plan-grant-boko-haram-amnesty |
SaharaReporters has intercepted a controversial document believed to contain a secret plan to extend the tenure of local government councilors and chairmen in Lagos state. The document is a draft bill put together by members of the Local Government Areas (LGAs) and waiting to be passed into law. A recent scrutiny of the draft bill suggests that members of the LGA in Lagos State are collectively plotting to prolong their tenure of office. A subtle clause in the bill suggests that members can stay on in their positions and serve a fresh term with effect from whenever the law is passed. The contentious clause, believed to have been unanimously smuggled in by the members with the collaboration of the governor reads: “Not withstanding the provisions of Sections 12(1) and 27(3), Councilors and Chairmen of Local Government and Local Council Development Areas that were sworn in prior to the commencement of this Law may hold office for the term prescribed by this Law”. This translates as an automatic extension of the tenures of the over 300 councilors and their chairmen and reeks of a dubious and concerted effort to tweak the law to enable them stay in power longer. Nigeria’s federal system of governance makes room for the Local Government Areas. These LGAs are administered by Local Government Councils consisting of a chairman who is the Chief Executive and other elected Councilors. The existing legislation stipulates that these members have a 3-year term of office but the new bill with the clause would see members starting a fresh 3 year term from the date the bill is passed. Interestingly, Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola who is supposed to superintend over the election process seems to show no interest whatsoever in fulfilling his legitimate obligation and rather seems to endorse the promulgation of the suspicious bill. Perhaps even more befuddling is the fact that Fashola’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) which controls Lagos State seems to be trying hard to push this bill despite strongly opposing similar moves by the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to extend the presidential tenure from 4 years to 7 years. It will be recalled that the government of Goodluck Jonathan drew a bill in 2011 proposing that the presidential and gubernatorial tenure be revised citing the rising cases of violence and tension across the country during elections as the reason. The ACN however rallied together to stiffly oppose this proposal. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/lagos-acn’s-double-standards-new-draft-bill-proposes-tenure-elongation-lga-chairmen-and-co |
