DESPITE the frenzy of activities and grandstanding tactics being displayed by front row political parties for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State, there is no easy way for the electoral body, political parties and candidates. When confronted with the question, ‘assuming the governorship election holds tomorrow, who do you think will win?’ most residents of Anambra draw blank. The situation in the state exactly two months to the election is that of confusion and consternation. The most prominent source of uneasiness about the forthcoming gubernatorial election is the existence of two candidates in both the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the otherwise major opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP). For the newly registered amalgam All Progressives Congress (APC), the throwback to the governorship primary is unsettling the party especially with the abdication of Senator Annie Okonkwo from his position as Campaign Director. In the fold of the peaceful Labour Party (LP), there is an onset of friction within the campaign organisation of the governorship candidate. And the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has started feeling the heat of the Anambra governorship election. The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Chukwuemeka Eze Onukaogu, has been crisscrossing Abuja intermittently to ensure that he squares up to the challenges of organising a credible election in a setting beset by high wire intrigues and desperation. The dual candidacy situations in APGA and PDP have presented the REC the first sign of what makes Anambra governorship a perplexing electoral contest. Can the pastor retain his composure and integrity after the battle? Like he said, he takes orders from above! Obi’s Big Issues IF there is any ‘non-combatant’ that is troubled by the Anambra governorship, it is Governor Peter Obi. Armed with the power of incumbency, Obi is torn between playing the godfather and ensuring that his detractors do not succeed him. Apart from the innate desire of every politician to remain relevant in the scheme of things, Obi is said to be interested in who succeeds for two major concerns. The popular belief among opposition politicians in the state is that Governor Obi’s operation of the State Local Council account is tainted by shadow fiddling “as such he is afraid of a possible probe and trial for economic crimes.” Then there is the revelation that the outgoing governor is interested in buying into the Orient Petroleum so as to join the big league of oil magnates in the state. A source from Umueri told The Guardian in confidence that it is not true that Obi did not have a succession plan. The source disclosed that the avowals by the Governor that he does not believe in the practice of imposition, he (Obi) was actually grooming one of the APGA governorship candidates, Mr. Willie Obiano to take over from him. “I do not know whether you were there at Ogbaru when the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Oseloka Obaze, was being received. Governor told the people that he does not have any candidate in mind, but that he would support whomever the people of Anambra north senatorial zone bring forward. But as far back as 2011, the governor confided in few close friends that he was grooming Obiano to take over from him,” the source stated. He added that the main reason Obi wants Obiano to take over from him (Obi) is to ensure that he becomes a player in the Orient Petroleum. The source said the claim in some quarters that the governor wants somebody to cover his tracks is secondary, stressing that any other candidate can do that to reciprocate the governor’s support. Governor Obi is also accused of bearing false tales to the Presidency about some political actors in the state, including the former Special Assistant to President Jonathan on Technical Matters, Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo and the LP governorship candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Patrick Ubah. In fact a youth group known as Igbo Youth Council, (IYC) recently astounded Anambra residents when it accused Obi of conspiring with APGA factional chairman, Victor Umeh, to abort Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s governorship ambition. Thunder Clasps From The Courts COURT pronouncements came in torrents to stagger the actors and supporters in the buildup to the governorship election. First, was the order granted by the Federal High Court, Awka Division, directing APGA to submit the names of its two governorship candidates to INEC. The need to abide by the September 17, 2013 deadline for the submission of forms CF 001 and CF 002 as provided in INEC timetable for the November 16, 2013 governorship election compelled a Federal High Court sitting in Awka to grant leave APGA to submit the names of its two governorship candidates to INEC. Investigations by The Guardian revealed that the order followed an ex parte motion filed by Dr. Chike Obidigbo and five others against the APGA governorship screening panel and INEC, challenging the authenticity and qualification of the membership to screen the party’s governorship aspirants for the party’s primary election to select a flag bearer. In the suit, No: FHC/AWK/CS/219/2013; the plaintiffs/Applicants prayed the Court to direct the fourth respondent, INEC, to accept the name of the first applicant, Dr. Obidigbo; as the candidate of APGA (sixth applicant) “pending the determination of the motion on notice filed along with this application.” In the substantive matter, the plaintiffs contended that the screening committee made of three persons, namely Alhaji Tayo Sowunmi, Chief Onwuka Ukwa and Barrister Ifeanyi Mbaeri, is illegal. They further argued that the three man panel is an illegal committee adding that since the committee violates the APGA constitution filed with INEC, what it did and the outcome of its proceedings are farcical, malicious and therefore null and void. While explaining the central place of citizenship vigilance in any democracy, the governorship hopeful explained that those who attempted to shut him out of the governorship race believed that as a peace loving and patriotic citizen he “would go home to sulk in quiet despondency” noting however that the court exists to ensure that “deceit and manipulation have no place in an open society”. His words: “We decided to approach the Courts to test whether our laws are made just for the fun of it or to serve as basis of our democratic practice. It is now obvious that with a forthright judiciary and courageous press, our democracy will stand the test of time. Anambra people can now begin the process of checking the backgrounds of those who want to lead them.” PDP compounds litigation AND not to be outdone in the litigation crisis, PDP expanded its circus in the Courts. From Port Harcourt, Senator Andy Uba’s former sparring partner, Prince Nich Ukachukwu, received an order directing INEC and PDP to field his name rather than that of Tony Nwoye as the authentic candidate of PDP. Presided over by Justice S.A. Aliyu, the Court disqualified Tony Nwoye, as the party’s governorship candidate in the state, saying that Ukachukwu by virtue of being the aspirant with the highest votes in the primary election should have his name sent to INEC as the governorship candidate. As Ukachukwu is clutching his order, Nwoye however sued INEC and PDP at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking the court’s order to compel INEC to recognise him as the PDP candidate. Nwoye’s suit suffered a temporary setback when counsels representing Ukachukwu and Andy Uba, announced their appearance seeking to be joined in the suit. Piqued by the development, a pressure group within PDP led by Mr. Bertram Okonkwo said it was unfortunate that members of the party in Anambra State have not known their governorship candidate two months to the election. He said it is left for the PDP to go back to the drawing board and re-strategize on the way forward, stressing that the best option for the party is to revisit the list of its primary aspirants and pick a consensus candidate. “Political pundits are of the opinion that one of the aspirants who contested but were not successful, such as Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, Senator Emma Anosike and Chief Ugochukwu Okeke, could be a possible consensus candidate for the Anambra PDP,” he suggested. He urged the gladiators to put personal interest aside and work for the oneness and togetherness of PDP. Campaign hiccups for LP AGAINST the background of petty squabbles between Directors of Ifeanyi Ubah Campaign Organisation and heads of other groups, the leadership of Labour Party (LP) including the National Vice Chairman, Southeast and state chairman, Callistus Uju Okafor and Sam Osita Oraegbunam; have said that reliance on the rule of law saved the party from crisis. Okafor and Oraegbunam, who spoke to The Guardian in separate interviews, disclosed that when the party noticed the first sign of possible discontent it summoned a State Executive Committee, (SEC) meeting, stressing that the openness and truthfulness that characterised the deliberations in the meeting helped to insulate the party from friction. Oraegbunam noted that attempts by certain individuals to impose candidates on the party always lead to endless bickering and animosity, adding that lack of internal democracy in political parties was the major cause of fractionalization and ceaseless litigations, which threaten the unity and cohesion of parties. He disclosed that having produced its governorship candidate in peace and brotherly love, Anambra LP was at the threshold of winning the November 16 governorship election, pointing out that the party’s governorship candidate, “Dr. Ifeanyi Patrick Ubah, has been pursuing his electioneering campaigns without distractions or inhibitions”. “It is now very evident that Dr. Ifeanyi Patrick Ubah would win the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State. He emerged in peace and only such a candidate without any hangover of crisis or litigation can have the peace of mind to deliver good governance. Our candidate has been meeting with Anambra people from different walks of life and it is clear that he would hit the ground running in March 17, 2014,” Oraegbunam declared. Oraegbunam denied speculations in certain quarters that Ifeanyi Ubah campaign organisation was in disarray, pointing out that the flag off of the governorship campaign did not witness any disagreement since according to him, everything went according to plan. UPP utilizes substitution window THE United Progressives Party (UPP) has become the first political party to take advantage of the substitution window. Founder and national chairman of the party, chief Chekwas Okorie, presented Professor Benedict Ndubuisi Akanegbu as its governorship candidate. He indicated that Prince Ogochukwu Akanegbu voluntarily withdrew from the race after winning the primary election. The UPP strongman expressed the hope that “Akanegbu will make Anambra State to take her rightful place in Nigeria.” The governorship candidate said he intends to enter into a social contract with the people of Anambra State, even as he promised to unveil the contract in Awka in a few days’ time. |

The Traditional ruler of Agulu, Igwe Innocent Obodoakor said the community has sanctioned those who impersonated him at a political rally to flag-off the campaign of Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah at Onitsha. Igwe Obodoakor who was speaking to journalists in Awka said the impostors who were ordinary titled men, but pretended to be Igwes had been suspended pending the determination of the issue by the General Assembly of the town. Igwe Obodoakor regretted that people should be desperate to go to the extent of impersonating a traditional ruler in their quest for easy money and pointed out that royal fathers by the virtue of their position do not play politics nor be involved in such political rally. Igwe Obodoakor said contrary to claims by the impostors, Governor Obi more than any other Governor in Anambra State had recorded unprecedented achievements that had remained a source of pride to the people of Agulu and Anambra State in general. He explained that the Governor has uphold the policy of equity and fairness in distribution of democracy dividends across the State and Agulu community has received its own fair share of democracy dividends. It will be recalled that Ichie Julius Ilo from Obe Village in Agulu had led two other Ichies to the flag-off of Ifeanyi Ubah political campaign, where he spoke as the Igwe of Agulu, when the Igwe, at that time, was not even in State. Condemnation has continued to trail their action. Commenting on the matter, Chief Stephen Okeke, also from Agulu condemned the action of Iloh and his co-travellers and wondered how much a politician should give to a titled man to bring the name of a town into disrepute. He also said that Ifeanyi Ubah’s campaign organization, but arranging such a façade, has proved that Ubah is not fit and proper for leadership in a civilized and decent society. |

IT is election year in Anambra State and the Peoples Democratic Party, touted as the largest party in Africa, is in disarray and if the right things are not done with urgency, the crisis rocking the Anambra State chapter of the party may have become the fore-runner of a disastrous outing in the governorship election scheduled for November. The party lost Anambra to APGA in 2003 and again in 2010 and with the present crisis, we are worried that the party may lose again in November and such loss may be counter-productive to President Goodluck Jonathan’s ambition in 2015. Anambra State and the whole of Igboland are still weighed down by the effects of the 30-month civil war which destroyed the entire region. This is our worry. Despite the many irregularities of PDP, it is still the only party with some national coloration and Anambra State would be better off in a national party than in a tribal party, with presence in only a small region of the country. This is why we are worried about the lingering crisis in Anambra PDP because if it remains unresolved, the tragedy of 2010 may repeat itself in the state. The tragedy of 2010 occurred when the party imposed Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as its guber candidate in the state against the obvious choice of delegates. The result of this political short-sightedness was that aggrieved members moved en masse to other parties, not to win the election but to stop Soludo from becoming Governor. APGA reaped the harvest of this anger. This tragedy is about to repeat itself and the party seems not to understand what has gone wrong. PDP should reflect on the circumstances that made them lose the state in 2003. That was where the party’s crisis started and the resolution of the crisis lies in the ability of the party to deal with the truth of what happened in 2003. It was in that year that Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, then Governor of Anambra State, and his brother in Kano State, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso were denied second-term tickets despite the gentlemanly agreement PDP had with its governors that they all would have second terms. In manufacturing excuses to deny Mbadinuju second-term ticket, a lot of evil was committed in the state. Lies, blackmail, treachery and insubordination were encouraged and financed in the state to make it ungovernable. To dent Mbadinuju’s reputation and malign his integrity, all in a bid to stop him from running for second term, innocent blood was shed in the state. The then chairman of Onitsha Bar Association, Mr. Barnabbas Igwe, and his pregnant wife were murdered in cold-blood in Onitsha and Mbadinuju was aptly framed up. While his PDP colleagues were enjoying their second terms and Dr. Kwankwaso was appointed Minister for Defence, Mbadinuju was hounded into Onitsha Prisons and charged for the murder of the couple, who were killed in Onitsha (while he was away in the United States of America) and conspiracy to commit murder with unknown and unseen people. The former governor had since been discharged and acquitted of these allegations after the then Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Anambra State, Chief Udechukwu Nnoruka (SAN), had announced that nothing in the Police report warranted putting the former governor to trial. In other words, Mbadinuju was arrested for nothing, charged for nothing and imprisoned for nothing. Dr. Mbadinuju, who led the entire state in prayers every Monday throughout his tenure, cried to God and still cries to God for justice. The blood of Barnabbas Igwe, his wife and their unborn child is still crying to God for justice. PDP, characteristically has swept this heinous evil under the carpet pretending that all is well in its Anambra chapter. No, all is not well. It is bad enough to murder the innocent couple and worse still, to deny their souls peaceful rest by shielding their murderers from prosecution and callously dragging an innocent man through the valley of the shadow of death, for an offence he did not commit. The crisis in Anambra PDP is more spiritual than physical and would never cease until atonement is made. Mbadinuju, all through these years of torture, had remained like a sheep led to the slaughter silent and loyal to the same party, which has done everything wrong to him. Power comes from God and no man receives any good thing unless it comes from heaven. PDP lost power in Anambra State and can only regain that power at God’s own time. Unfortunately, God of heaven does not build on a foundation of injustice. The crisis in Anambra PDP began at the point where the party sacrificed Mbadinuju on the altar of injustice. The crisis will end at another point, where the party will find the courage to do God’s will and appease Mbadinuju on the altar of justice. This is the key to the resolution of Anambra PDP crisis. The powers that be then was not bothered whether or not PDP won or lost. They were more concerned about how they could install their own candidate into power in the state. That same quest to install into power a particular person from 2003-2013, 10 years ago, is still continuing with the effort since then to put their preferred candidate into office as governor. This has not succeeded and it is getting more and more difficult as the years roll by. It is the same scenario then and now of how the same powers that be chose to lose Anambra State to another party by ousting an effective governor, who brought peace to the state; a lover of education who established the only state university and brought education to the door steps of the ordinary man; a Christian in every sense of it. He was ousted without just cause, chased out of office to make way for their preferred “money bags.” It is the treatment meted to Mbadinuju that the same powers that be are re-enacting at the federal level today (2013-2015). So it is that same powers that be working against him in 2003, that appear now to give our President the same Mbadinuju Treatment to deny him (President ) his second term in office, just as they did to Mbadinuju. The way of God is hereby summarized as follows: “Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. “Though a sinner does evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him. “But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God”. (Eccl 8:11-13) Obi (Esq.) and Ileboh are National Coordinator & National Secretary of Anambra National Youths Initiative (ANYI) respectively |
tukur na today nemesis go fit catch up with you because everyday for the thief one day for the owner |
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, on Wednesday warned that the seats of about 124 PDP members in the National Assembly would be declared vacant if they failed to withdraw their loyalty to the breakaway faction of the party known as the New PDP. Tukur, at a news conference at the Wadata House headquarters of the party in Abuja, also described the promoters of the New PDP as “undemocratic and unpatriotic elements,” who are bent on destroying “our common destiny.” But he was referred to as “a joker” by the leader of the faction, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, and the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Zakari Mohammed, who advised him to study the Electoral Act properly before making a pronouncement on such an issue. On Monday, 26 senators and 57 House of Representatives members announced their loyalty to the New PDP which other key officials are a former National Secretary of the PDP, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and a former Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Sam Jaja. Forty five members of the House of Representatives had earlier identified with the group that also has a former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; Governors Sule Lamido(Jigawa); Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto); Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara); Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); and Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano), in its fold. An angry-looking Tukur said at the brief news conference that the leadership of the PDP would do everything within its powers to deal with anyone that attempted to undermine the authority of the party. He added, “All persons elected on the platform of our great party at all levels who identify with these enemies of the oneness and greatness of our party shall have their seats declared vacant as required by law. “We shall leave no stone unturned to ensure that such persons and indeed, any other individuals who attempt to subvert the leadership of the PDP shall reap in full, the consequences of such actions. “I wish to emphasise that the PDP has adequate mechanism for internal conflict resolution. All party members are therefore advised to ventilate their grievances through this medium. “There is only one lawfully recognised PDP and I am firmly in charge.” Referring to Baraje, Oyinlola, and Jaja as “impostors,” Tukur, who was flanked by the majority of the members of the newly constituted National Working Committee of the party, enjoined the Police and other security agencies to treat them as such. He said, “Gentlemen of the press, you are aware of the current developments in our great party. Our reason for being here is to inform you without any iota of doubt that the PDP has no faction and there is neither room nor reason whatsoever for such a claim under any guise. “The PDP has only one duly elected National Executive Committee under my chairmanship. I wish therefore to state with all emphasis that any group of persons parading themselves as leaders of NEC or any other organ of our party are impostors and I urge all Nigerians, especially the security agencies and other institutions of democracy to regard them as such. “Let me state categorically that the PDP as the sole custodian of the sacred mandate of over 160 million Nigerians and which, in the last 14 years has lifted high, the banner of democracy will not fold its arms while some undemocratic and unpatriotic elements destroy our common destiny by causing divisions and confusion among the people. “Consequently, we shall ensure that any person who is not duly elected into any leadership position in our great party and has not been duly assigned any role but goes ahead to arrogate such to himself will be made to face the full wrath of the law.” Tukur refused to field questions from journalists after the short press briefing. But, Baraje declared Tukur and those in the PDP NWC as unfit to lead the ruling party. Baraje said, “They are all jokers. They don’t know what is party politics. We are not surprised because they are ignorant of party politics. “In any case, the process of declaring the seats of members of the national or state assembly vacant or calling lawmakers back is well known in the constitution. To wake up and say he is going to recall people back or declare their seats vacant shows that he is ignorant. “Tukur is not fit to to be called the national chairman of the PDP.” In the House of Representatives, its spokesman, Mohammed, who is also one of the 57 members of the House that on Monday declared support for the New PDP, said Tukur ‘should study the Electoral Act properly, before jumping to conclusions.” His counterpart in the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, could not be reached for comments as his mobile telephone number indicated that he was out of reach. A text message sent to him was not responded to.
