I don't know how much NA psychologically prepares their soldiers, if he is not prepared to see his close friend torn apart, he can be heavily traumatized and begin to question the reason he is even fighting. war is beyond the excitement we see in pictures.

You can never be prepared, for what you will encounter in battle, there is nothing like getting use to it, every attack, ambush is a whole different experience.
