Politics / Re: Buhari's Govt Officials Covering Up Investigation Into Sahara Energy Fraud - SR by Hackomania(m): 5:51pm On Jun 19, 2016
No Sacred Cow in Anti-graft War: Intelligence sources slam Sahara Reporters story on Sahara Energy
June 18
Top level Intelligence sources last night debunked the story published by an online publication, Sahara Reporters, to the effect that top officials of the BuhariAdministration were covering up investigations against an integrated energy conglomerate, Sahara Energy Limited.

In the story, Sahara Reporters had mentioned Abba Kyari, Chief of staff to the President and Muhammad Baba, the newly appointed chairman of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA as officials of the Presidency that have been shielding Sahara Energy from investigation and trial.

But a top level State Security source who preferred anonymity told our correspondent on phone last night that the story was not only ridiculous but without foundation and lacking credibility.

He said: “There is no official in The Presidency who does not know that President Buhari does not compromise when it comes to the issue of corruption. The quickest and easiest way to lose your job in that place is to be remotely linked to fraud in whatever form.”

”Who is that official in the Presidency that will want to risk everything by sticking his neck for a company? Apart from Mr. President’s uncompromising stance on corruption, the gentlemen mentioned in the fake story earned their present positions because of their integrity and unblemished records. If Mr. President himself does not breath down EFCC officials’ neck on how it should perform its functions, who is

that official that will have the temerity to want to put pressure on the anti-graft agency. It is just far-fetched.”

The top official explained further that there are some contradictions in the story that exposed the mischief of those behind the publication.
He said: “The same story where it was alleged that these officials were engaged in efforts to shield the company from investigations, also revealed that EFCC officials raided the Lagos and Abuja offices of the company where they carted away computers ostensibly to help their investigations.”

“If indeed the officials mentioned were interested in shielding the company and had the powers to do so, EFCC would not even carry out the so-called raid in the first place as those high level officials would have brought their influence to bear on the agency.”

“To suggest that the Presidency officials “ordered the anti-corruption agency not to publicize the raid,” is a further testimony to the emptiness and illogicality of the story. Does EFCC even possess the power to prevent its activities from not been publicized? Does EFCC carry out its search in secret? If these officials had the ‘power’ to order EFCC not to publicize the so-called raid, will it not have deployed such power to prevent the raid in the first place?” the top Intelligence officer said further.

Our findings revealed that the EFCC did not visit Sahara’s Abuja or Lagos offices on May 26 as indicated in the story. EFCC officials routinely visit high net worth, blue chip companies that have had one form of relationship or the other with government agencies it is investigating.

Such fact finding visits by the agency, it was learnt further, does not amount to a verdict of fraud or any untoward conduct but an exercise aimed at examiningsuch companies’ past relationship with such government agencies that are being investigated.

High level Oil Industry sources told our correspondent that what is probably at play is corporate rivalries, where some corporate entities are trying to implicate others to gain vantage positions in the sector.

Industry watchers say the above position is hard to fault as Sahara Energy, according to sources, has constantly co-operated with EFCC in its investigations and had not hesitated to provide every information required by the anti-graft agency.

Said an oil industry source: “You cannot stampede EFCC to indict a corporate entity that has not been found to have a case to answer. You cannot use the media to blackmail EFCC to do what is not in tandem with the rule of law. No matter the media onslaught, you cannot pass a guilt verdict on an entity without due process. The story is a sham.”

We learnt from high level Security sources that the anti-graft agency dismissed the story as a mere distraction that should not be dignified with a response.

Said the source: “Only recently, the EFCC Acting Chairman said since he was appointed to the position,Mr. President has not summoned him to give him directive on how he should carry out his duties. So if Mr. President is not interfering in the functions of the Agency, where do these officials get their power to order EFCC on what to do from?”

” The insinuation created by the story is an insult to both the EFCC and the president who have shown that corruption will not be tolerated, have zero tolerance for the term sacred cows and have consistently shown this in their exemplary attack on corruption. The story is malicious and bereft of facts,” he concluded.

Science/Technology / Big Data: A Must In Our Society by Hackomania(m): 11:19am On Oct 15, 2015
BIG DATA...

This might be the biggest advice I'll ever have given you. And yet, it may be the seemingly least important. Whether you're a high school leaver, or a PhD holder, I implore you to explore the field of BIG DATA... Do you know why?

Because information has now become more available than ever.
Because information available is in chaos and needs order.

If you're frustrated about looking for a job, you can explore big data.
If you have a job but seek job security, you can explore big data
If you have a secure job, but want a bigger pay, or higher recognition, explore big data

I quote US based staffing firm Robert Half that
"1. mobile applications development,
2. big data, and
3. wireless networking
are providing some of the highest-paying careers in the United States and Canada with the largest starting salary increases this year over last year." IEEE Spectrum, 2015

"...much IT investment is going towards managing and maintaining big data" Network computing, 2012

Now you may need seriously insane skills to surpass the Linus Torvalds in apps development or the CCIEs of wireless networking, but in big data, it doesn't matter whether you're a high school leaver (commercial art or science, nobody cares) or you have Mildred Dresselhaus kind of Engineering skills or a CFA, you can do big data.

So you may ask...
So WHAT EXACTLY IS BIG DATA?
Is big data really big?
And how can I explore big data?

I'll address that in the next few posts (if I don't get carried away by something else)... Stay right here...

Or follow me on http://echo.com.ng/2015/big-data-a-must-in-our-society/

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Should I Take This Job ? by Hackomania(m): 8:47pm On Jun 19, 2015
Hello OP,

If I'm allowed to say something about this, I'll tell you two stories.

1. I was in an audit firm (on the Island) with unrivaled job security, but no career growth in sight. I was a one-man-army IT "manager" with no boss and no subordinate. An opportunity arose for a 1-year internship in an IOC (farther into the Island) with NO hope of extension or regularization.
Considerations
The Internship had a staff bus benefit attached - transport costs go down by 98%
The audit firm was very secure job - I was doing so well they fired my boss (but they retained my "office assistant" position)
My job was more of support, and I wasn't involved in real operational processes (think of an IT Manager in an indigenous Audit firm with zero dependency on automation and/or technology applications), meaning I cannot "matter" in the direct operations - support staff typically get less consideration in promotions and all.
The "popularity" of the IOC was a factor (e.g. Comparing an internship with CBN with a job in an MFB).
The internship wasn't an "in-my-career" job, but the opportunity to make an impact in a big and well-known place, was just too salivating to let go.

Summary of story, I quit the job, took the internship, enjoyed myself, and six months into the internship, I got a job in an LOC. The audit job wouldn't have given me the opportunity to attend the numerous interviews that was needed, but my bosses in the IOC were fully behind me in getting the job (even wrote me letters of recommendation)

I know that the only explanation to this story is God's inexplicable grace, and that your path may be different from the guy in scenario 1; in fact in scenario 2, I am still doing that internship and begging for at least an extension.

Sorry I can't go over scenario 2, I'm out of time as I'm now typing on the expressway (living dangerously hehehe), but lesson here is:

Don't be driven by the money, but by
1. The opportunity to take a bigger challenge
2. The opportunity to advance your career
3. The opportunity to rack up a more intimidating resume

Warm regards,
KCE

P.S. These are true life stories

This #ForEverybodyForNobody stance may backfire o. But HEALTHY competition is good for democracy...

All these events remind me of the great OBJ in '99/2000...

Anyway if Saraki is loyal (to the Presidency, not necessarily to the party), then we can see forward motion in Nigeria. Dagora is already Buhari's man.

So long a leader has the right intentions (Jona did) AND surrounds himself with the RIGHT people (which Jona failed to do), the only way for us would be UP.

NYSC / Was Your NYSC A Waste Of Time? by Hackomania(m): 10:59pm On May 31, 2015
Dear ex-corps member,

I was in a discussion with a few colleagues, and though some said they benefited from youth service, many said it was a sheer waste of time.

Many that taught in schools and in government parastatals (which is most likely what we all do these days) are of the joint opinion that they spent their time just "waiting for time to pass"...

For those that were privileged to work in industrial setups and related establishments (on very rare occasions).

My question is, did you enjoy your youth service (especially those that are just about to exit in grand style - Batch B). If you did, what made you enjoy it. If you didn't, hmmm... me I cannot help you o

Your feedback would be appreciated

Nairaland / General / Towards A Detribalized Nairaland by Hackomania(m): 8:56pm On Apr 15, 2015
Hello Nairalanders, mods and all,

At times like this in this country, it has become obvious that little tribal issues discussed on this platform could be aggravated by comments from colleagues, and unfortunately not all of us have the same levels of exposure, knowledge of ignorance as the case may be.

Examples of issues that, though national and thus affect us all but are tribal in nature, like the Lagos Monarch speech, the Igbo demand for a ministerial appointment, etc, can, if not handled with wisdom, may increase our tribal differences and make this country a less united polity.

I don't know how we all can handle this, but I believe our unity as a country should be a collective effort, and this would mean respecting the views and traditions of others in our comments and responses, and being tolerant of their ignorance for our religion and tribe. Let us not let the last few weeks weaken our unity that already hangs on the balance and let the outside world's doom-message about our division come true.

And if I may be permitted to add, keeping some of these posts that incite such tribal divisions on the front page, in my opinion, may not be the best for us as a nation, no matter how much it is trending.

For some of us, Nairaland is our most active community, and that implies that what we see here will go a long way in influencing our perspective about others around us.

If we value the unity of this country, please let's work towards it.

God bless you,
God bless Nairaland,
God bless Nigeria.

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Makes History - Reaches The North Pole And Is Half Crippled by Hackomania(m): 8:30pm On Apr 14, 2015
Marathon runner, Tuedon Morgan, has set another
record by being the first to hoist the Nigerian flag
on the North Pole, during the just concluded
National Black Marathoner Association marathon.
The winner who shared her experience with
BellaNaija, an online lifestyle blog said, "I became
the first Nigerian to step foot in the North Pole
and I ran a marathon on the north.

"I don't think I have ever done anything so difficult.
The last four kilometres were the hardest. I was
seeing things that weren't there. It was -41C.
"I was cold. It was a hard race but I kept seeing
the Nigerian flag and I knew I had to place it at the
end of the race. I pushed for my country.
"I was in tears when I crossed the finished line.
Another thing that really got me worried running
the North Pole was my leg. "I have a bad leg and it
requires me wearing special running shoes. I had
to use brand new shoes for the race. It had
spikes underneath it. But funny enough my legs
were good. I believe so much that God was with
me," concludes Morgan.

Hi guys, hope you've had a good year so far.

As a means of showing help to the world and contributing the IT community development, I was thinking, since most of these Tecno (and probably other OEM phones) don't have ROMs flying around the market, why don't we share our ROMs so that if someone's phone gets bricked beyond repair, he can just pick up a ROM here, restore, and he's back to life.

What do you think about this?

Please leave your comments below, for or against. Let's get this done together.

Just to add, this means that we would need
1. a huge database of ROMs. File sharing should cater for that
2. A way to keep our private data out of the ROM. I'm still racking my brain on the easiest way to achieve this (probably with an app or something). So far the way I know is quite troublesome.
3.other stuff you might find out that evaded my radar
