Nigeria in crisis after reports say President suffered brain damage
January 12, 2010

President Umaru Yar'Adua , alive or brain damaged?
ABUJA, Nigeria: Senior members of Nigeria's political elite were due to hold emergency talks overnight after the President was reported to have been left ''seriously brain-damaged'' following medical treatment.

The President, Umaru Yar'Adua, 58, was said to be unlikely to recover. He has not been seen or heard from since he flew to Saudi Arabia to be treated for heart trouble seven weeks ago.

President Yar'Adua's long absence has pushed Nigeria - Africa's most populous nation and its second-largest oil exporter - to the brink of its most serious constitutional crisis since 33 years of military rule ended in 1999.

His absence coincided with the alleged attempt by a 23-year-old Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, to blow up a plane over Detroit.

The incident pushed the traditionally close relations with Washington to an all-time low, yet neither Mr Yar'Adua nor his Vice-President, Goodluck Jonathan, have commented.

Anger was brewing on Sunday over the alleged cover-up by the Government of the President's condition. The respected Nigerian newspaper Next claimed that Mr Yar'Adua was ''seriously brain-damaged and unable to recognise anyone, including his wife''. Government officials immediately denied the story, which quoted unnamed sources at a Jeddah hospital.

But other sources in Britain and Nigeria have said the President may have been in a coma for two weeks and could even be ''clinically dead''.

''Whether the guy is recovering, stable, deteriorating, it's ridiculous and very dangerous for there to have been absolutely no concrete information one way or the other,'' a Western diplomat in Abuja, the capital, said.

''Nigeria is a country which gorges on gossip, but this is perhaps the worst possible time to have made the error of allowing these rumours to run.''

Mr Yar'Adua, a former chemistry teacher from the Muslim-majority north, has a history of kidney ailments, which raised questions before the disputed May 2007 elections. Last month doctors in Saudi Arabia diagnosed acute pericarditis, an inflammation of the membrane around the heart.

Officials and allies have repeatedly said he was responding to treatment and would soon return. But there have been no pictures to confirm this, prompting lawyers and opposition politicians to take legal action demanding proof that Mr Yar'Adua was able to carry out affairs of state. Three court cases are due to open on Thursday, two days after the National Assembly reconvenes to discuss the President's health.

The country's 36 state governors were expected to meet today before what many see as a crucial week for Nigeria's political stability. Efforts to bring peace to the oil-rich Niger Delta are likely to grind to a halt, raising fears of a return to violence which could affect world oil prices.

OAM4J:

Oh God! how I love Nigeria. You made me a Nigerian. So I pray:

Lord, remember thousands/millions of Nigerians dying of malaria and other ailments now, remember many homeless Nigerians, remember many families in Nigeria who cannot afford a meal a day, remember all those who drop out of school because of lack of fund and remember thousands of Nigerian graduates who cannot find a job.

Please Lord, deal with everyone in government now or before now who contributed to all the above. Deal with all the enemies of progress of this nation.

As for Yar'adua give him wisdom and courage to make a good choice for his life and for Nigeria and finally, deal with all the selfish people misleading Yar'adua now and turn their counsels to foolishness.

Amen. (if you agree with my prayer please say Amen)
