Where i come from, to confirm if sb is a witch, d person is thrown into a river. if the person floats, he/she is stoned to death. If he drowns, everyone  now believes he/she wasnt a witch. They shake head and wish him/her well to d land of the great beyond. Isnt my culture beautiful?
Literature / Yankee-bred Naija Authors? by Haroldben(m): 11:22am On Aug 17, 2011
Peeps, am just wondering if one cant become an accomplished Nigerian author without having the Jand-connection. Look at the timeline of our literature. Almost every (almost every? Seems like EVERY, not almost every) accomplished creative author from this part of the world either had to travel out or something, before his/her name became a celebrity. It now appears as if if you dont travel out or at least publish your book abroad and have same reviewd and recommended by foreign press, you havent started as a Nigerian author. It seems Nigerians dont buy books by Nigerian authors until that book has been published abroad and internationally acclaimed to be superb before we give it a second-thought. Even you, yes, YOU who is reading this is not left out. Chinua Achebe wasnt a household name until he took his work abroad and published same, Buchi Emecheta, Chimamanda Adichie, Myne Whitman etc etc, Before you get me wrong, i have nothing against these writers. Far from it. I cherish their works. In contrast, it is you the reader that 'i have something against'. Why cant Mr X from Warri publish his book in Nigeria and you buy, review and recommend it? Why must he first appear on BBC, CNN, New York Times or Oprah before you nod your head in approval of his work?
Please, lets change our mindsets. Naija authors are good, whether they publish abroad or not. Kudos to Kachifo Ltd, Cassava Republic and the rest for trying to publish good naija books by naijarians (i like that name. Sounds more swaggerlicious than Nigerians. lol) in naija. Let me 'hear' your thoughts on this.
Literature / Re: Do We Have Published Authors Here? by Haroldben(m): 10:53am On Aug 17, 2011
wow, seems we have lots of good, yet largely unknown writers in the house. Myne Whitman seems to be the only exception. Netra, i just went through your site. I was moved by the commendations. cool stuff. But, to be honest,i think you should do something to the site. Make it a bit more attractive. Get a good web designer. It doesnt need to be sophisticated. Could be simple, but tight. You know your website is your salesman. Some websites need to be looked at three times before the visitor even decides to go through it. Others need to be looked at once. you can even try blogger or wordpress(my fave!). They are free and cool.

As for a lotta other 'unknown' writers on this thread, lets try to get people review our works on THEIR OWN SITES, especially, if their sites draw lota traffic. That way, a lot of people will get to know you and we wouldnt always sound like desperate self-trumpet blowers, if you get what i mean. you could check out a weblog like Naija Writers Crib at www.naijawriterscrib.. They review works and interview (rookie) authors.
Also join sites like naijastories.com to post your stories and get them constructively criticised. You will gather lots of fans along the way.
You can also make free copies of your books available for download on sites like www.free-ebooks.net as e-book. This way, if people like one of your books, they may be 'forced' to purchase the other when next they hear your next book has been released.
Cheers!!!

Religion / Does Islam Teach Violence? by Haroldben(m): 3:40pm On Aug 10, 2011
With the rate of world terrorism perpetrated by followers of the islamic faith, and undying activities of the boko haram sect in the country, i can only but ask does islam preach or encourage violence in any way. Please this isnt a post meant to cause unrest; instead, it is a sincere question which stems from the innermost yearnings of my heart - and a million other Nigerians. Before you wave this aside, pls do well to share your opinion. Why would a few group of people promise to make the world unliveable for everyone else?

Literature / Re: Self-Publishing by Haroldben(m): 12:51pm On Jul 15, 2011
Kay9 and Myne are both correct in their suggestions.
As for the idea of posting in forums like naijastories.com, i will highly recommend that. You will get heavy and down-to-earth reviews there. But, you have to be prepared mentally to take everything everyone has got to say cos, believe me, there are people who will just come over to your story post just to SHOW YOU THEY ARE ALMIGHTY EDITORS AND CRITIQUES,sent from heaven above to put you where you belong. one of my stories which everyone said they REALLY REALLY enjoyed was however criticized, counter-criticized, counter-counter criticized, both constructively and, you know. But! I enjoyed their comments. It made me see things i was blind to while basking in the euphoria of writing a supposedly beautiful story. You will like the folks at naijastory, belief me, Umm, what other pseudo-naijastories platforms do we have? Any ideas?
