The OP was asking what made atheists to stop believing in religion, not God
He's right cos the major thing that has given birth to atheists here is religion and I know you won't want to defend religions who are blaspheming God and turning people away from God and the truth about him.
When one is affected by religion, and he tries to join another and he sees that though they are different, they extort him, draw him away from God or hypocritical, you can't blame them if they conclude there is no God when those acting as spokesmen have failed massively- preaching peace but in times of conflict, blessing violence and destruction in the name of ethnicity and patriotism.
And when calamity strikes, they are distressed when they hear the words from the clergymen 'It is the will of God'. They love God and did everything pleasing to him and when calamity strikes, they are downhearted cos their religious leaders always lie to them that godly people always receive blessings and not calamities. Those that sing 'Abraham's blessings are mine' do not know the tests and challenges he faced to remain faithful

Personally, one yeye Pentecostal elder called out my mum in Church few years ago in the front of the people on a Sunday, I was a drummerboy then, I would have forgiven the man if it were on other days and not in Sunday. This man called her out and said she is guilty of murder (till today, it still baffles me that she did not hear anything he was saying until he asked everyone to pray for her), I was so mad, I wanted to throw the drum sticks at the both of them. I well knew she can't hurt a dog but that is what we hear today when someone enters a Church and the pastor says that the mother is responsible for his problems whereas the mother is long dead. When pastor later called mum privately to his office and asking her who she killed, she kept insisting she was innocent until she cried. She said she did not hear anything the elder was saying. I wanted to leave to go to Redeemed or Winners PR Christ Embassy, all are just the same thing. I wanted to join Catholic, I felt that use of images were wrong and I don't like the history of wars, I showed interest in Mormon, Islam, Buddha, some religions are not even in Africa. I was so few up and decided to be an atheists but atheism is not the answer either. I got fed up and prayed to God to help me draw close to him if truly there is a religion that teaches and practices the truth, I did not pray cos I don't know how to pray, I wrote a letter to him and put in under a table on the pulpit. He answered my prayers, who would have believed that I, Emmanuel Gabriel will be one of Jehovah's Witnesses and a zealous preacher? That's why I try to put myself in their shoes when I meet those who are disappointed in religion. Religion waters are drying up, most pastors don't care and most are beginning to teach nonsense that will keep their members especially when it has to do with Sex and we're in a sex mad world

You can't blame those ones, it is those who just want to reject God cos they don't want to feel accountable to him so they can pursue selfish desires that are to blame. They are the most foolish set on this universe, they have the same understanding as animals they adopt who only eat, drink and mate. They don't know God or show appreciation for him. They're pitiable.

Besides, people are taught at school that evolution is the answer and religion is incompatible with science

The wrong thing is the conclusion that there is no God or no true religion. God is the one who gave us this spiritual need and he too must set a place for those who really want to worship him acceptably. If there is no God, there will be no religion but the Bible says he does not accept all. There's only one road

It's foolish for a person who discovered that all his money are counterfeit to CONCLUDE that every naira is bad. There may be millions of others making fake money but as long as the Nigerian minting and printing company is fully in operation, the only legal company printing Nigeria currency for the nation, the legal money is still available, he should do well to study it and use it

Same illustration applies to religion, in God's eyes, there's only one religion but the others lead to destruction but since all claim to worship God, what will help one to find the true religion? He does not have to study every religion, he must allow God to guide him and the only guidance is in God's word, the Bible

The Bible says that God's people honor God's name, who are doing so today?
God's people have deep love for one another above other things and they won't go to war but promote peace? Who are doing so today?
God's people preach and teach the good news of God's kingdom and not some human government. Who are doing so today?
God's people promote Bible truths and not philosophy or human tradition like immortality of soul, hellfire, image and ancestor worship, who are doing so today?
God's people are politically neutral, who are those today?
God's people honor God's word
They put faith in Jesus Christ
The true religion do not have a clergy-laity system
They don't follow worldly standards
Bible says that they will be hated and persecuted by everyone, even to the point of imprisonment, who are those today?

Only Jehovah's Witnesses possesses all the characteristics of the true religion according to God's standards

There was once a thriving great city whose people dwelt in affluence. Those were days in antiquity when men listened only to oracles and worshipped idols.

This thriving great city suddenly became a host to many problems and calamities. The inhabitants died young. War, pestilences and severe hardship almost brought the city to extinction.

At the instruction of the king, the city priests contacted the Oracle and brought instructions from the gods.

The solution to the city's misfortunes require the adventurous journey of 100 men into a far away ancient city. They must cross seven rivers to the east of the city to get to this ancient town. Each of these 100 men must return with a bowl full of the dust of that town. 100 bowls of sand from the ancient town would heal the land.

As a matter of urgency, the king enlisted a group of 100 volunteers. They were mighty warriors from noble families. A day was fixed for the journey. The 100 volunteers prepared for the D day.

Just as the D day began to approach, odd news began to filter into the city. There's a small town en-route this ancient city. The 100 men must pass through that town to get into the city. There's no other route. However, the king of this small town was rumored to be hostile to travellers. He beheads every Traveller who does not wear a red cap. So was the rumor.

There was no way of ascertaining the veracity of this rumour since no one has ever travelled there from the city. So, some believed, while others disagreed.

This rumour divided the 100 travellers into 3 groups.

Group 1 : Those who believed the rumor and therefore bought themselves a red cap.

Group 2: Those who were unsure of the rumor but bought themselves a red cap to avoid distasteful eventualities.

Group 3: Those who disbelieved the rumor and never saw the need to get a red cap.

The D day came and all the 100 men set on their journey after receiving blessings from the king. The company was a mixture of those who wore a red cap, and those who didn't.

There was an old man in this city. The oldest of them all. After the 100 men had departed, he summoned his numerous children and said, 'Do you see this travelling company? Those who have a red cap are wise because, if in case, this rumour turns out to be true, these wise ones would save their heads a million times. And if it's a false rumor, they actually have nothing to lose. But those who journeyed without a red cap are fools, for if this rumour turns out to be true, they'll certainly lose their heads."

Conclusion
The company of those who wore a red cap are the believers. If there's no God out there in death, they have nothing to lose.

But the Atheists who are taking a godless journey into the unknown eternity are simply being reckless. If in case there's a God out there. They're losers.

Even with anything attributed to God or a God, what may be well?
