The Russian government has blamed sanctions imposed by Western powers as the reason for an interest payment deadline on sovereign foreign debt being missed, and rejected allegations that it did not pay its dues. “We do not agree with that,” Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitri Peskov, said in remarks reported by the Interfax news agency after the 30-day deadline relating to two loans taken out in foreign currency passed in the early hours of Monday. The outstanding interest payment is 100 million dollars. The Russian Finance Ministry said the payments due were in fact made on May 20, five days before the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control. These fell under the U.S. Treasury and issued a ban on Russian transactions. Russian Finance Minister, Anton Siluanov, has termed the dispute about the failure to make the payment a “farce.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/06/russia-blames-sanctions-for-default-on-sovereign-debt/

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has discovered and destroyed two hectares of land used for the cultivation of Cannabis sativa, otherwise called Indian hemp, in Imo State. The agency also arrested one of the proprietors of the farm, situated at Umuagu, Umuguma community in Owerri West Council Area of the state. A source said the agency began a manhunt forthe owner and other operators of the farm, which was described as the largest Indian hemp farm ever discovered in the state. “On 26th May, 2022, operatives of the NDLEA in Imo State raided a Cannabis farm in Umuagu, Umuguma in Umuguma Community in Owerri. Also, suspects were arrested at the farm which is the biggest Indian hemp farm ever in Imo State,” the source said. Contacted, the spokesperson for the Agency in the state, Shehu Lamuwa, confirmed the report, but declined to give further details. Recall that Imo Commander of the Agency, Ruben Apeh, had at the event marking the 2022 United Nation’s day against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking, expressed worry over the prevalence of drug abuse in the state, especially within the last one year. He stressed that the activities of drug peddlers in Imo State has become so alarming and increasingly becoming sophisticated among the younger segments of the state population. “We therefore call on our stakeholders and the media to arise to the occasion of partnering with the Agency to reach out to people by way of sensitizing them about the dangers of drug abuse because mobilising and informing the citizenry is the only way forward to discourage the youths and adults from drug abuse.” he appealed. https://guardian.ng/news/ndlea-uncovers-biggest-indian-hemp-farm-in-imo/

A Facebook post by one Tokunbo AremoOdua has been shared across other platforms and forwarded on WhatsApp many times. The post claimed that the All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu initiated ECONET, Treasury Single Account (TSA), tax digitalization, Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and economic summit to proffer solutions for economic prosperity in Nigeria. It also claimed that Tinubu was the first and last governor to govern his state for years without federal allocation during the Obasanjo Administration. As of the time of this report, the post had amassed about 317 likes, 69 shares, and 247 comments and has reached multiple groups on WhatsApp. Verification Checks by Daily Trust revealed that while Tinubu played a role in the evolution of ECONET in Lagos State, it does not mean he brought ECONET to Nigeria. He was Governor of Lagos State when the federal government auctioned the telecommunication network through the Nigeria Communication Commission. Lagos was mentioned as one of the two states that supported the licence fee financially. Victor Asemota, a popular tech twitter influencer also stated that “Lagos state was only involved in its founding through the acquisition of secondary shares, after much deliberations. The then governor did not commit to Cybertel until after Delta State, Oceanic and the Akwa Ibom State government had gotten involved.” Also the claim that Tinubu introduced the TSA in Nigeria is false. Rather, it was proposed by the federal government in 2012 during the former President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration and was fully implemented by the current administration to consolidate all inflows from all agencies of government into a single account at the Central Bank of Nigeria. Similarly, the claim that the former Lagos State governor started the economic summit in Nigeria is not true. The Nigeria Economic Summit Group was incorporated in 1996 by Chief Ernest Shonekan. The claim that Tinubu created the independent power project in the country is equally false. It was introduced by the federal government to combat the power shortage in the country. Daily Trust also found the claim that Tinubu was the first and last governor to govern his state (Lagos) for years without federal allocation misleading. The then former President Olusegun Obasanjo-led government only withheld the local government funds of Lagos State when Tinubu created LCDAs against the approval of the federal government. However, a claim in the post that Tinubu pioneered LCDA is true Conclusion Daily Trust can confirm that while it is true that Tinubu created LCDA, he was not the pioneer of other initiatives contained in the claims made by the author of the post. Therefore, the claims are largely false. This fact check was done in partnership with the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD) https://dailytrust.com/fact-check-did-tinubu-pioneer-econet-tsa-economic-summit-in-nigeria

The negotiator for Abuja-Kaduna train attack victims, Mallam Tukur Mamu, on Tuesday, raised an alarm over the deteriorating health condition of the remaining victims in the kidnappers’ den. Tukur Mamu, who is also the Publisher of the Kaduna-based Desert Herald Newspaper, feared that some of the victims, who are being subjected to horrible conditions, and were bitten by snakes, may not survive if the Federal Government did not act urgently to ensure their release. In a statement he issued to journalists, in Kaduna, Tukur Mamu noted that most of the victims may hardly survive the next few weeks due to their deteriorating health conditions and the inhumane condition they were being subjected to inside the forest. Although, he confirmed that the victims were not molested or beaten, he insisted that the Federal Government should put more efforts to ensure their urgent release, as any delay may cause their death. DAILY POST reports that the bandits earlier freed 11 of the victims after a deal with the government https://dailypost.ng/2022/06/21/abuja-kaduna-train-attack-victims-may-soon-die-negotiator/

The Ukrainian military seized Russian weapons and military equipment containing microchips from the US, according to a report by The War Zone, citing Ukraine intelligence. Eight of the US-made microchips were found inside a recovered Russian air defense command post vehicle, reportedly part of the Barnaul-T system. The chips were said to be manufactured by American technology firms Intel, Micrel, Micron Technology, and Atmel Corp. Additionally, Ukrainian specialists uncovered five US microchips from AMD, Rochester Electronics, Texas Instruments, and Linear Technology in the Pantsir air defense system. The discovery of US-made chips in Russian weapons provided “more detailed” information about where Moscow is getting critical components for its weapon systems. The US has been very vocal about the “special military operation” launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Ukrainian territory. Washington has donated billions of dollars in military equipment to help Ukraine fight off the invasion. Other Discoveries The Ukrainian military examined a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile and found at least 35 US-made microchips inside. It also opened a turreted electro-optical system of the Ka-52 Alligator, which contains 22 chips manufactured by Texas Instruments, Altera USA, and Micron Technology. According to military analyst Skip Parish, finding US-made microchips in Russian equipment highlights the country’s “total dependence on western technology.” Most of the companies that manufactured microchips found in Russian weapons said that they no longer do business with Moscow, while others disputed the Ukraine intelligence findings. Apart from microchips, it was reported that Russia is using high-powered weapons supplied by France, Germany, and other European Union (EU) nations in invading Ukraine. At least 10 EU member states allegedly supplied 346 million euros ($371.1 million) in military equipment to Moscow amid a ban on engine and weapons deliveries due to the annexation of Crimea in 2014. https://www.thedefensepost.com/2022/05/30/us-microchips-russian-weapons/amp/

Eight soldiers were killed on Wednesday and 13 wounded in a “terrorist attack” in northern Togo near the border with Burkina Faso, the government said, using a term typically designating jihadists. Togo’s troops are deployed in the north of the country to try and contain a jihadist threat pushing south from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger where militants linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group operate. In April, five soldiers were killed in northern Benin in an ambush by gunmen while nine people were killed in February in the deadliest attack to date in the country. “This territorial expansion by jihadists is goint to progressively give birth to home-grown jihadist cells, made up of local recruits, that feed off of the local grievances,” wrote Mathieu Pellerin, Sahel researcher at the International Crisis Group. Local issues include tensions over access to resources, stigmatisation of certain ethnic groups, presence of self-defence groups as well as criminal and trafficking gangs, he added in a report in French published earlier this year for the French Institute of International Relations. “For coastal West African states, where for now the threat is contained in terms of intensity and limited geographically, there is still time to stop the security situation from deteriorating.” “At around 03:00 GMT, a forward operating base… in Kpinkankandi was the scene of a violent terrorist attack by a group of unidentified heavily armed individuals. Sadly, among the security forces, eight have died and 13 were injured,” a statement read on national television said. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but Kpinkankandi is located near the border with Burkina Faso. A senior security source in Togo who asked to remain anonymous told AFP that the soldiers were attacked by a group of 60 gunmen who arrived on motorbikes. “They exchanged fire for more than two hours… and then a reinforcement unit was hit by an improvised explosive device,” he added. Soldiers had foiled an attack in November last year in the northern village of Sanloaga, making Wednesday’s attack the first to cause casualties. Violence from armed groups and criminal networks is on the rise across West Africa. At a meeting of West African defence chiefs last week, Ghana’s Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul said that in three years the region had suffered more than 5,300 terror-related attacks claiming around 16,000 lives. A major concern is how the threat is spreading from the Sahel to northern parts of coastal Benin, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Togo. Ukraine said it has damaged a Russian navy logistics ship near Snake Island, a small but strategic outpost in the Black Sea. It is the third Russian ship lost in the Black sea. This comes as Ukrainian forces also drove out Russian soldiers around the second-largest city Kharkiv. Renewed fighting around Snake Island in recent days may become a battle for control of the western Black Sea coast, according to defense officials, as Russian forces struggle to make headway in Ukraine’s north and east. https://news-af.feednews.com/news/detail/538665af97977778ca6c636a9c529152?client=news
