a 23-30mm gun or AGL is ok becasue terrorists usually have under 23mm gun
What i'm saying is, a gun on a UCAV makes it vulnerable to ground fire. Terrorists can easily shot it down, as it has to come in close to engage targets.

I think developing a UCAV with computer trajectory calculation gun pod is wellcomed in COIN
Which company/country is doing that? Doesn't it make the UCAV more susceptible to ground fire?

Nigeria i think is working on a larger UAV, and the Air Force plans to arm it with rockets and missiles. The Air Force is also working on transforming soon to be de-commissioned trainers to UAVs.

PANTSYR S2 - A SUPER BEAST ON THE PROWL

The Pantsir-S2 is an improved version of the Pantsir-S1 which uses the same missile launcher and anti-aircraft cannons. The Pantsir-S2 can launch new surface-to-air missiles which increases the range from 20 to 30 km. The Pantsir-S2 is also fitted with a new SOTS S-band search radar to increase the detection range from 36 km to over 40 km. In April 2014, Colonel Yuri Muravkin, deputy commander of the air defense troops has announced that the Russian army will get an upgraded version of the Pantsir S-1 air defense system and a new missile. The new Pantisr-S2 has entered in service with the Russian army in 2015. It was deployed in Syria to protect the Russian air force troops at the Hmeymim airbase in Latakia. Footage from RT Ruptly of February 2016 has showed Pantsir-S2 stationed at the Hmeymim airbase in Latakia, Syria.

The Pantsir-S2 armament consists of two 2A38M 30mm anti-aircraft guns and twelve 57E6-E ready-to-fire missiles in steered launch containers mounted at the rear of an 8x8 truck chassis. The cannons have a combined rate of fire of between 3,900 and 5,000 rounds per minute (1,950 to 2,500 rpm for each gun), and have a muzzle velocity of 960 m/s. Bursts of between 83 and 250 rounds are fired as determined by the target type, with an engagement range between 0.2 and 4.0 km and to an altitude of about 3 km. HE-T and HE-I shells are used and fitted with a A-670 time and impact fuze which includes an arming delay and self destruct mechanism.

The Pantsir-2 fires the 57E6-E missiles which has a bicalibre body in tandem configuration, separable booster and sustainer with separation mechanism. The sustainer contains the warhead and contact and proximity fuses. The missile weighs 65 kg at launch and has a maximum speed of 1,100m/s. Range is from 1 km to 12km. It has an expanded engagement zones up to 20 km in range and up to 10 km in altitude. The new missile of Pantsir-S2 will increase the system’s range of fire from 20 to 30 kilometers.

The Pantsir-S2 is fitted with a new SOTS S-band search radar increases detection range from 36 km to over 40 km with 360° coverage. The system can now track in excess of 40 incoming targets up from 8-10, and can now engage targets traveling at up to 1,200 meters per second up from 1,000 m/s. Search azimuth has also been increased from 80° to 90° owed to electronic beam steering. The shape of the new antenna has change and is mounted at the top of the turret.

The T-72 is the most popular tank currently in service. With over 22,000 produced, the T-72 is involved in almost every theater of war, and, with the transformation of warfare from symmetric to asymmetric combat, waged in urban areas, the T-72 must also adapt, to maintain its effectiveness in complex terrain.

Part of this modernization is to equip the T-72 to be more effective and less vulnerable to close-in threats, such as obstacles, mines, IEDs and RPGs, all characteristic of urban warfare, The Russian company has designed this urban warfare kit based on the experience of the war in Syria.

The tank has additional reactive armor tiles expanding the protected areas on the turret and hull sides, and rear areas protected by slat armor. The tank also carries Counter-IED jammer to defeat radio-controlled threats. A distinctive feature is the protected shield built around the commander’s hatch, that enables the tank commander to observe to all sides and upwards, through the transparent shield and operate the heavy machine gun. For optronics and fire control the modernized tank employs the Sosna, with additional thermal imaging sight. The gun is replaced with the improved 2A46M cannon and an auto loader modified to fire missiles. A dozen blade adds to the tank’s potential in obstacle clearing or counter-mobility operations.Part of this modernization is to equip the T-72 to be more effective and less vulnerable to close-in threats, such as obstacles, mines, IEDs and RPGs, all characteristic of urban warfare, The Russian company has designed this urban warfare kit based on the experience of the war in Syria.

A proper decent system suited to meet the requirements of COIN and FIBUA. However, i wouldn't recommend it for countries like Nigeria. The threat we face in Nigeria is mainly from RPG, VBIED and 14.5mm, simple ERA can defeat that.

No need for a complex system, what we require are substantial amounts of simple upgraded T-72s or VT-3 that can dominate the grounds and in large numbers.

Tanks supported by IFVs, MRAPs, LAVs and Light Skin vehicles followed by logistic support.

From South-Africa

Denel Land Systems (DLS) took the
opportunity to demonstrate its truck-
mounted 155 mm T5-52 artillery
system during an event held at South
Africa's Overberg Test Range in April.
The company wanted to highlight the
system's superior range when firing
rocket-assisted projectiles (54.8 km
at sea level), rate of fire (six rounds
in the first minute, with a sustained
rate of fire of 2 per minute), and its
ability to fire six rounds that land
simultaneously on the same target.
The gun can also be elevated from 3°
to +72°, allowing it to be used in the
direct fire role: a capability that was
demonstrated when it put two rounds
into the same impact point at 1,000 m.
The T5-52 system essentially comprises
the DLS 155 mm/52-calibre gun
mounted on an 8x8 Tatra truck, with
a gross system weight of around 38
tonnes.
Its 300 kW turbo-charged diesel gives
it a speed of 85 km/h, while the road
and cross-country ranges are 600 km
and 300 km, respectively. The vehicle
with the gun mounted is 10.1 m long,
2.9 m wide, and 3.48 m high. It has a
ground clearance of 41 cm and can
ford to a depth of 1.4 m. The 40%
gradient and approach and departure
angles of 32° and 39° give adequate
mobility off-road for an artillery
system.
The system carries complete rounds in
a container behind the cab so they are
adjacent to the breech of the rearward-
firing gun. The vehicle is stabilised by
hydraulic jacks, with the hydraulic
power for them and the other systems
being taken from the truck or another
vehicle if necessary.
The crew comprises four on-mount and
two ammunition handlers off-mount
when additional ammunition is used.
The time into and out of action is 60
seconds, and loading is assisted by a
semi-automatic rammer, automatic
primer loading, and an optional three-
round magazine and three-round
crane .
The system is offered with a completely
integrated command and fire-control
and communications system, and can
be supplied with the related
observation, meteorological, and other
equipment. It fires the full range of
ballistically matched ammunition using
base-bleed units that can be fitted in
the field and a modular charge system
with combustible cases.

If this goes through. Though highly unlikely it means the chances of the G6 self propelled howitzer ever seeing action in the hands of the SA army are highly unlikely.
Any reports of how the G6 fared in Yemen?

I also think the possibility of the G6 seeing actual combat is quite high, however i do not believe the G6 would be completely replaced by this. They'll most likely work in tandem.

The Nigerian army probably also needs to replace it's long range artillery, this system could replace our Oto Melara Palmaria 155mm artillery howitzer.

Patches689,

As you can see, the Nigerian terrain makes it almost impossible to operate just wheeled armoured vehicles. The Reva is stuck in mud in the North, if it were in the Southern region it would be abandoned, LOL.

The Army operates both wheeled and tracked APCs because the terrain dictates so.

Henry, I heard that on average, it takes only 5 days for your guys to refurbish and return to service damaged REVAs, depending on the availability of all materials and spares. That's bloody impressive. Can you confirm?
I cannot confirm that, I mean the actual number of days, but it's clear that our TAM and refurbishment time is quite good. Excerpt a vehicle is completely burnt out, the Army Special Vehicle Plant in Bauchi state is able to completely refurbish armoured vehicles and infantry support vehicles in time.

I don't think the Nigerian army has completely lost a Reva, all Reva's damaged in combat are quite immediately returned back to service. I'm optimistic that the recently damaged Reva(the one hit by an RPG) would be returned back to service, as we can all see the Reva above suffered a similar damage and has been completely retro-fitted and returned to combat.

Sort of looks like a cross between the Denel LM13 and the LM16, which Denel LMT is supplying to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

It must be so frustrating working in the Nigerian defence industry: pols and military brass make all the right noises and then go for abominations like the Honker, when a better local product exists!
We'll have to wait and see what the actual vehicle would look like. I'm pretty optimistic it's going to turn out awesome.

There are available local vehicles which can fit properly into law enforcement and military requirements, the Nigerian military has to look inwards for some of these alternatives.
