The man who revolutionised sports broadcasting by pioneering the instant replay has died aged 81. The technique was used for the first time on 7 December 1963 during the Army-Navy football game in Philidelphia after Tony Verna developed a method to cue the tape to pinpoint the play he wanted to air again. He came up with the idea after puzzling over how the fill the gaps between plays in American football. But the concept was so cutting edge that after Armyquarterback Rollie Stichweh scored a touchdown announcer Lindsey Nelson told viewers: "This is not live! Ladies and gentlemen, Army did not score again!". It soon became commonplace for TV viewers to be able to re-watch big plays just seconds after they had occurred. In 2008 Mr Verna said in an interview: "Not many things you can do in life where you can change the way things were happening before." He went on to produce or direct five Super Bowls, the Olympics, the Kentucky Derby and Live Aid. He also worked for two years in Las Vegas as president of Caesar's Palace Productions, and also directed interviews with Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He died at his home in Palm Desert after a battle with leukaemia.

A newly released study shows that regular drinkers are less likely to die prematurely than people who have never indulged in alcohol. You read that right: Time reports that abstaining from alcohol altogether can lead to a shorter life than consistent, moderate drinking. Surprised? The tightly controlled study, which looked at individuals between ages 55 and 65, spanned a 20-year period and accounted for variables ranging from socioeconomic status to level of physical activity. Led by psychologist Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin, it found that mortality rates were highest for those who had never had a sip, lower for heavy drinkers, and lowest for moderate drinkers who enjoyed one to three drinks per day. Of the 1,824 study participants, only 41 percent of the moderate drinkers died prematurely compared to a whopping 69 percent of the nondrinkers. Meanwhile, the heavy drinkers fared better than those who abstained, with a 60 percent mortality rate. Despite the increased risks for cirrhosis and several types of cancer, not to mention dependency, accidents, and poor judgment associated with heavy drinking, those who imbibe are less likely to die than people who stay dry. A possible explanation for this is that alcohol can be a great social lubricant, and strong social networks are essential for maintaining mental and physical health. Nondrinkers have been shown to demonstrate greater signs of depression than their carousing counterparts, and in addition to the potential heart health and circulation benefits of moderate drinking (especially red wine), it also increases sociability. While it’s always important to drink responsibly, this is one study that warrants raising a glass.

I bet she thinks politics and ruling a country is a joke! Kingwa Kamenchu has contested for the elections in the past but lost to incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta. Her way of creating a buzz and getting the needed votes to unseat the son of one of the founding fathers of the country, is posing nu de and posting her photos on social media. In 2017, Kenya, will go to the poll for their presidential elections and one of the candidates for the elections isKingwa Kamenchu .She reportedly took these photos with her friends and posted on her Facebook page and told her fans and followers to get in the mood while they look forward to the election.Ms Kingwa Kamenchu is seen in her country as a weird attention seeker who says and does things sane people would normally not do. She was reported to once declarethat she never wears pants and is addicted to masturbation. The website also reported that she told an interviewer during the run off to the 2013 election that Kenyans should spend their Sunday afternoons mastu rbating as that would make them become a healthy working nation.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, January 14, commissioned a cenotaph in honour of all Nigerian soldiers slain by Boko Haram since 2011. Jonathan commissioned the cenotaph at the Nigerian Military Cemetery in Abuja while senior members of the army looked on. A cenotaph is an “empty tomb” usually built to remember people who died during a war and whose bodies are buried elsewhere. link= pulse.ng/politics/goodluck-jonathan-president-commissions-monument-in-honour-of-soldiers-killed-by-boko-haram-photos-id3409222.html

Abuja – Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charlie Boy, on Wednesday, said his 37-year-old marriage had been a blessing and lesson for others to learn. He said this at a rotary club of Asokoro District 9125 meeting held at Chelsea Hotel, Wuse 2, Abuja, presided over by its President, Rotarian Ogechukwu Ochuba. Charlie Boy Oputa said he had been married for 37 years and still enjoying it. He added that it was difficult to find a perfect partner for marriage, “but it is always better to tolerate and endure as nobody is perfect. “I have been married for 37 years and I must say that, though it is not easy, I am still enjoying it. “Marriage management requires tolerance, patience and endurance because it is very difficult to find a perfect partner for marriage. “When a married partner sees the other as a subject or subordinate, then there is bound to be misunderstanding.’’ Charlie boy said longevity runs in his family as his grandfather lived up to 120 years, his father died at the age of 97 and that his mother is 94 years old and still alive. He said he had quit alcohol, smoking and do not do drugs or abuse his body anymore, contrary to the perception of many persons in the society. “I come from a family with history of long life. “My grandfather died at that age of 120 years, my father died at the age 97 last year and my mother, who is still alive, is 94 years old now. “I don’t abuse my body anymore; I don’t do casual sex, I have quit smoking, alcohol but I do a lot of exercise. “I am 63 years old and have nine children and 14 grandchildren,” he stressed. He further stated that “Charlie Boy is different from Charles Oputa and his practice of Buddhism has helped him have peace of mind and containment in life. “I am a spiritual person and that is what made me stay grounded as a father and a husband. Through Buddhism, I have learnt to be contented. “Charlie Boy does not come to my house, he doesn’t live with me. It is just a character.’’ He also revealed that though he and his late father never got along, he believed in freedom. Oputa said God had blessed everyone with a talent and therefore parents should not force their children to follow certain lines in life contrary to their belief. “God has given everybody something; you have to look for it. I am an advocate of allowing children to grow the way they want but with guidance so they do not lose track of what they want to be. “I always want to do what I think it’s right and also add value to my environment,” he added. Earlier, Rotarian Ochuba had appreciated Charlie Boy’s presence and expressed the hope that members of the Rotary Club had benefitted from the talk given by the 63-year-old grandfather. International actress and UN ambassador, Angelina Jolie has denounced the various attacks by Boko Haram in Nigeria. She totally condemned the ongoing insurgency in nigeria in a statement released yesterday Jan. 13th. "Each new crime committed by Boko Haram exceeds the last in brutality. This is a direct consequence of the environment of total impunity in which Boko Haram operates. Every time they get away with mass murder, rape and the enslavement of women and children, they are emboldened." She pleaded with the international community to work together so as to "bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice". m.dailytimes.com.ng/article/18013/angelina-jolie-stands-up-against-boko-haram/

There are no perfect women and no perfect men. Obviously, there is not just one type of woman that is right for every man. However, some women try to portray themselves before men in a way that instead of impressing them, they push them away. Here are 10 types of women who scare men. 1. Super-strong woman How can a man date a woman whose muscles are bigger than his? Super-strong woman creates a feeling of inferiority in her man. For men, their strength and their ego lies in being the savior for their woman, not the opposite. 2. The Bimbo The Bimbo is an attractive but empty-headed lady who is nothing more than a pretty body and a pretty face. With such type of women men cannot have an intellectual conversation, because they will misinterpret everything men say and they come up with their own conclusions. Even though, men like beautiful women, if they don’t find the lady capable of intellectual conversations, they throw her over. 3. The Child The Child is a type of women who refuse to grow up. She will always expect her man to treat her like a child and pamper her. She is looking for a father, not a partner. Just as woman doesn’t want to be a ‘mother’ for her partner, man doesn’t want to be a ‘father’ for his girlfriend. At first, men might like such childish ways, but then they start hating to pamper. 4. The Mean Bitch The Mean Bitch finds faults in everybody. She often belittles others and her goal is to make others’ life miserable. She is extremely selfish and all the time she thinks only of herself. Most men avoid such type of women and think it is better to stay away from them. 5. The Complaint Box This type of women has problems with everything. Because, no matter what her man does or buy for her, it’ll never be enough. She will keep nagging at her man endlessly and will make his life miserable. Men hate and avoid such women. 6. The Crybaby Getting emotional is good sometimes, but I’m talking about women who use their tears as a weapon to prove their point. In fact, men don’t like emotional blackmail. Dating a crybaby makes a man feel like banging his head against a brick wall. Rather than doing that, men prefer avoid such women. 7. The Gold digger Money is matters a lot to her. She wants to marry rich man in order to get his money. She demands gifts and expects a man to spend money on her all the time. She often asks lots of questions about man’s financial position. It’s a main blow to a man’s ego to ask him about it. That’s why men stay away from gold diggers. 8. The Chatterbox The Chatterbox is the woman who talks endlessly. She always tells her man all community gossips and often discusses the contents of her wardrobe. She often talks nonsense. For a few days, the relationship may work but after several days, the man would run away from such woman. 9. The Flirt She goes around flirting with one guy and another. She can’t be loyal to one man. She cheats on her man over and over again. Even if she tries, she couldn’t stay faithful to any man. Most men wish to have a long-term relationship so they stay away from such type of women. 10. The Cinderella She lives in a fairytale, where reality isn’t faced and where the man is the Prince Charming she’s been waiting since childhood. She is too obsessed with this that she wants her man to be perfect. Men want to be in a long-term relationship and such women scare them because of their continuous uncertainty in the relationship. Do you fall into any of these categories? If you do, change your behavior, otherwise you risk being alone forever. Do you have something to add? Share your thoughts, please! |
What are your views on his decision to retain the little girl? To me, this is all shades of wrong. Asuquo Etim is a 42-year-old man who took a 12-year-old daughter of Bakassi refugee, Mary Okon, as a collateral for a N600,000 loan. He said the girl works for him to feed his family. The Punch had on December 30, 2014, exclusively reported that Mary’s father, Okon, secured the loan from Etim ininstallments in 2013, with a view to saving the life of his first daughter, Blessing, who was diagnosed with blood cancer. Blessing however died in September 2013, despiteefforts made to sustain her life. But speaking with our correspondent at his residence on Orok Effiom Street, off Atimbo Road, Calabar, Cross River State, on Tuesday, Etim, who described himself as a contractor working for the Calabar Urban Development Agency, absolved himself of child labour accusation. He argued that since he had not been able to secure government contracts like he used to, he and his wife, Patience, had resorted to engaging Mary in street trading. Sounds like child labour to me. Etim said; “I gave him (Okon) my money and even my wife, who pitied their condition gave out part of her business capital to him. And because they didn’t have any property, they used Mary as collateral for the loan. “But as you can see, I am also facing financial problems now and that is why my family relocated from the three- bedroom flat we used to stay on Nyahasang Street to this one-room apartment where we now reside. “We don’t have money to fend for ourselves anymore and that is why Mary has to sell small-small things like bottled water, garri and palm oil to feed the family. I don’t have any plan for her to go to school because I don’t have money.” Etim explained that he thought that Okon, who accompanied our correspondent on a visit to his residence, had come to pay off the debt. He insisted that Mary would not be released to her father until the N600,000 loan was repaid. He added; “I thought he came to pay off his debt. I would have been happy and willing to release the girl. She (Mary) will not reunite with her parents unless her father repays the loan.” Meanwhile, Mary, who was preparing to hit the streets to hawk palm oil during the visit to Etim’s residence on Tuesday, said she would be very happy to return to her family who reside at the Bakassi refugee camp inside St. Mark Primary School, Akwa Ikot Eyo Edem, in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State. She said, “When I go out to sell palm oil, I will not return until 7pm. I really want to reunite with my family again andsee if I can still go to school. I will love to become a lawyer when I grow up.” pearleffiong..com/2015/01/man-takes-girl-as-collateral-for-n600k.html

I’ve had similar experiences on both sides; I’ve had my heart broken and I’ve broken hearts. On relationships and marriage: One day I’ll figure it out, settle down, and get married.
