Yes a laptop can work when plugged 2 electricity without its battery, as at dat time it functions just lyk a desktop pc.wen d light goes off,d laptop goes off too. And about ur battery, i think u av to get a new one,since ur pc doesnt recognise it. But before u buy a new one, try another battery of d same model if it will work. If it does, dt mins a new battery. If it doesnt, that means d battery connector (d irons dt connect d pc to d battery)is at fault. But first try another battery of d same model. Hope that works.
