A nine-year-old infected with HIV at birth has spent most of
their life without needing any treatment, say doctors in South
Africa.
The child, whose identity is being protected, was given a burst
of treatment shortly after birth.
They have since been off drugs for eight-and-a-half years
without symptoms or signs of active virus.
The family is said to be "really delighted".
Most people need treatment every day to prevent HIV
destroying the immune system and causing Aids.
Understanding how the child is protected could lead to new
drugs or a vaccine for stopping HIV.
The child caught the infection from their mother around the
time of birth in 2007. They had very high levels of HIV in the
blood.
Early antiretroviral therapy was not standard practice at the
time, but was given to the child from nine weeks old as part of
a clinical trial.
Levels of the virus became undetectable, treatment was
stopped after 40 weeks and unlike anybody else on the study -
the virus has not returned.
Early therapy which attacks the virus before it has a chance to
fully establish itself has been implicated in child "cure" cases
twice before.
The "Mississippi Baby" was put on treatment within 30 hours
of birth and went 27 months without treatment before HIV re-
emerged in her blood.
There was also a case in France with a patient who has now
gone more than 11 years without drugs.
Dr Avy Violari, the head of paediatric research at the Perinal
HIV Research Unit in Johannesburg, said: "We don't believe
that antiretroviral therapy alone can lead to remission.
"We don't really know what's the reason why this child has
achieved remission - we believe it's either genetic or immune
system-related."
'Virtual cure'
Some people are naturally better at dealing with an HIV
infection - so-called "elite controllers". However, whatever the
child has is different to anything that has been seen before.
Replicating it as a new form of therapy - a drug, antibody or
vaccine - would have the potential to help other patients.
It is worth noting that while there is no active HIV in the child's
body, the virus has been detected in the child's immune cells.
HIV can hide inside them - called latent HIV - for long periods
of time, so there is still a danger the child could need drug
treatment in the future.
The team in Johannesburg performed the study alongside the
UK's MRC Clinical Trials Unit.
'One child'
Prof Diana Gibb, who is based in London, told the BBC News
website: "It captures the imagination because you've got a
virtual cure and it is exciting to see cases like this.
"But it is important to remember it is one child.
Injections are 'next revolution' in HIV, study finds
Hunt for HIV cure turns to cancer drugs
Aids deaths halve as more get drugs
"HIV is still a massive problem around the world and we
mustn't put all our eyes on to one phenomenon like this, as
opposed to looking at the bigger issues for Africa."
Worldwide, 36.7 million people are living with HIV and only
53% of them are receiving antiretroviral therapy.
Dr Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of
Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said: "Further study is needed
to learn how to induce long-term HIV remission in infected
babies.
"However, this new case strengthens our hope that by treating
HIV-infected children for a brief period beginning in infancy,
we may be able to spare them the burden of lifelong therapy
and the health consequences of long-term immune activation
typically associated with HIV disease." |
US President Donald Trump has named General John Kelly,
who currently heads the Department of Homeland Security, as
his next chief of staff.
The announcement, made on Twitter on Friday afternoon,
removes Reince Priebus from the role.
The embattled former chief of staff had faced pressure since
being named as a possible leaker by Mr Trump's newly
appointed director of communication.
Mr Priebus told CNN he resigned on Thursday after talking with
Mr Trump.
"The president wanted to go in a different direction," he told
CNN's Wolf Blitzer, adding that he thought Gen Kelly was "a
brilliant pick".
Anthony Scaramucci, who was appointed communications
director one week ago, had accused Mr Priebus - a Republican
Party stalwart - of leaking to the press.
He also phoned a reporter to unleash a profanity-filled rant
against Mr Priebus, whom he called a "paranoid
schizophrenic".
The people around Donald Trump
Gen Kelly is a retired general who has become the face of
border security.
In a series of tweets just before 17:00 (22:00 GMT) on Friday,
the president praised the former Marine Corp general as a
"great American" and a "great leader".
"John has done a spectacular job at Homeland Security. He
has been a true star of my administration," said the president.
He will start work on Monday, a White House spokesperson
says.
Gen Kelly's deputy, Elaine Duke, will become acting head of
the Department of Homeland Security.
Glittering career of John Kelly
the former four-star general had a military career spanning
four decades
he is the highest-ranking military officer to lose a child in
the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
son Robert, a first lieutenant in the Marines, was killed in
combat when he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan in
2010
at Homeland Security, was responsible for border,
immigration, cyber hacking, airport security and natural
disaster management
In a third tweet, President Trump praised the outgoing chief of
staff, who had previously worked as the chairman of the
Republican National Committee (RNC).
"I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and
dedication to his country. We accomplished a lot together and
I am proud of him," he said.
In his previous role as RNC chairman, he acted as a bridge
between the Republican nominee and a party establishment
that was often uncomfortable with its own presidential
standard-bearer.
Analysis: Trump cutting Republicans loose
By Anthony Zurcher, BBC News, Washington
Was there really any doubt who Donald Trump was going to
side with in the Priebus-Scaramucci feud?
The newly appointed communications director took dead aim
at the chief of staff online and on-air this week, calling him a
"paranoid schizophrenic".
Well, as the saying goes, even paranoids have enemies. On
Friday afternoon the axe fell.
With Priebus's departure, the purge of establishment
Republicans within the Trump White House is in full swing. The
former head of the Republican National Committee was
brought in as a veteran Washington player to help bridge the
insider-outsider gap in the administration, but instead he
tumbled into the chasm.
It's clear, in tweets and comments, that Mr Trump believes the
Republican Party does not have his best interests in mind.
Now he's cutting the party loose .
By all accounts Priebus's successor, John Kelly, is a well liked,
highly respected man. His selection is yet another example of
Mr Trump's preference for military brass in positions of
authority.
His managerial skills will be sorely tested, however, by a White
House staff that has been wracked by internal strife. Leading
an army into battle may seem easy by comparison.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said she did not
think the administration's relationship with the Republican
Party would be affected by Mr Priebus's exit.
"I think we've still got a good relationship. We're going to
continue working with the party and doing what we came here
to do," she said.
House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, a close friend of
Mr Priebus and a fellow Republican, said he had served "the
president and the American people capably and passionately".
"He has achieved so much, and he has done it all with class. I
could not be more proud to call Reince a dear friend," he said. |
Unilorin Admission Guide
UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN
PRESS STATEMENT
Unilorin yet to release Admission Screening date
The attention of the management of the University of Ilorin
has been drawn to a statement currently trending on some
social media platforms to the effect that the University has
announced the date and procedure for the screening of
admission candidates for the 2017/2018 admission exercise.
The purported announcement even went as far as directing
admission seekers to a phantom website on which to upload
their eligibility details.
We want to state categorically that the University of Ilorin is
yet to commence any screening for the 2017/2018 admission
exercise. In fact, we are yet to release the cut-off marks for
this year’s admission exercise. The online announcement is
the handiwork of scammers and 419ers who are bent on
taking advantage of the anxious admission seekers to fleece
them of huge sums of money.
Perceptive members of the public ought to know, even from
the headline of the statement, that such can never emanate
from the University of Ilorin.
We therefore warn all admission seekers and their parents/
guardians to exercise some patience and wait for the official
release of screening instruction by the University. They should
be wary of falling cheaply for the antics of scammers.
Signed
Kunle Akogun
Head, Corporate Affairs,
University of Ilorin.
