Am curious about the insurance having to take care of the bills of the other car. Kindly explain this never heard about this. Sound whole strange

The primary responsibility of an insurance company is to the third party. That is why it is compulsory to have a minimum cover of third party insurance. This means that whichever cover you have the third party is always covered.

Who is a third party? The third party is someone who is not part of the agreement (contract) between the insured and insurance company. The third party could be a car owner, landlord, pedestrian(s) etc

What happens in a situation whereby the claim is more than the maximum liability of the insurance company? The insured pays the balance. Most third party liability of insurance companies is between N1m to N2m. For example if the insurance company third party liability is N1m and there is a claim of N2m after adjustment, the insured will pay the balance of N1m to the third party.

What is Policy excess? It is the portion of claim borne by the insured. For example if you have a claim of N100k after adjustment and your policy excess is N10k. Your discharge voucher will be N90k.

Why do we have policy excess? It is for the insured to be extra careful because we believed that since we have insurance we are covered.

However, we have the option of buying back the policy excess. To buyback your policy excess you will pay at most 1% of the premium that is if your premium is N100k you will pay N101k to buyback the policy excess.

Really?
I'm not hating just feel it's inappropriate to bring insurance claims to the internet

When an insurance company lives up to its obligations, I don't see anything wrong in putting it on the internet. Most times what we read about insurance companies is that they don't pay claims. Putting this on the internet give the insuring public confidence that their loss will be taken care of when the need arises.

Bros, a manager in lead way told me the the 5k 3rd party insurance have no claims whatsoever. You're only entitled to any claims if you purchase the full insurance cover which is about 10% of the the valuation of your car.
Insurance in Nigeria is one hell of a gigantic fraud.

For a branch manager of leadway assurance to tell you this it means he may be issuing third party insurance certificate without remitting the premium to the company or he may use that to scare you from reporting a claim.I work in an insurance company as a technical (operations) person and I have seen this happening with some of our branch managers. Your 5k third party insurance covers you to the tune of N1m to N2m in respect of property damage depending on the insurance company you use. While for medical expenses it is unlimited. That leadway assurance branch manager will loose his/her job if reported to their head office. If your insurance certificate is valid you have every right to lodge a claim and after the necessary documents are supplied. You're entitled to compensation and if they fail to pay your claim. You have every right to report to NIA and NAICOM, they will take it up from there.

that's rubbish after they first told us it's 5k

The price is still N5k,the landing cost is N28k but it is being subsidized by TSTV that is TSTV bears the balance of N23k. It is a market penetration strategy on the part of TSTV. They will have more subscribers selling at N5k than selling at N28k and the monthly subscriptions will surely take care of the subsidy in the long run.

I have seen some people commenting here that 3rd party insurance claim does not work in Nigeria. When are we going to start believing ourselves and that things can work if we want it to work.A danfo bus rammed into my wife's RAV4 last month. The Danfo,s driver and the owner agreed to repair the vehicle but when I reviewed the level of destruction, I told them that I don't see them being able to foot the bill. They did not even know the importance of their 3rd party insurance, even the agent that got the papers for them told them nothing can come out of it when they called him. After confirming the genuineness of the policy number from the insurance database we went to their office at Alagomeji,Lagos. They came for inspection and within 3 weeks; the cheque to repair the vehicle was handed over to my wife by the officer of Law Union Insurance Plc.3rd party insurance works in Nigeria.Let people stop saying what they don't know.

Most of the third party insurance policies in Nigeria are fake because the policyholders believed they have nothing to gain as such they patronize fake insurance agents.

To confirm the authenticity of your motor insurance policy go to www.askniid.org/checkpolicy.aspx

and one bad part of just doing third party without considering comprehensive is that while the third party benefits from the policy, you will have to carry your vehicle by yourself to repair at your own cost.....

That is why it is called TPO (Third Party Only).

YES you are. Here is how it works.

God forbid, if anything happens before January next year. You'll approach the Insurance company and file for compensation.

What matters to them is the "policy number" and if they'll gotten that, they'll give you a form to fill.

There is a section, where they'll ask; "Who drives the car as at accident time" below are some of the options:

-Owner
-Owner's driver or Employee
-Others. (Relative, New Owner, etc)

As you can see....all you need to do is tick others.

So, while submitting, since you'll have all your evidence as new owner inclusive of "Transfer of ownership"

Sir or Ma....you are as good as the origial owner.

I beg to differ on this.

The new owner is covered only if the previous owner is ready to file the claims paper on his behalf because insurance policies are not transferrable.

The most important requirement to the insurance company is the insurable interest of the insured to the property insured. Insurable interest means the relationship between the policyholder and the property insured. The new owner has insurable interest in the car in question but he is not the policyholder because he is not a party to the contract.
At renewal he may decide to do a fresh motor insurance policy provided he has done reregistration or change of ownership.

I once did comprehensive insurance with AIIcO, just small 20k car damage, they almost frustrated me in that their Idawo Taylor office.

I decided to fix my car myself and ban them forever even start discouraging anyone that wants to use them. So with ur story, it has once again confirmed that AIICO insurance is a scam.

You can't really say AIICO insurance is a scam because there is what we call policy excess in every insurance policies. The policy excess varies according to the value of the car/properties you insured. Most policyholders find in difficult to read their policy documents. All they believed is that once there is a claim it must be settled by the insurance company. Your motor insurance policy excess might be more than N20k as such they are not liable to pay your claim.

Policy excess is what the insured bears out of the claim while the insurer takes care of the rest. For example you insured a car and the policy excess is N50k.if you're unfortunate to be involved in an accident and the liability is N200k. The insurer is liable to pay N200k less policy excess which in this case is N50k.What this means is that they are liable for N150k while you bear the N50k. Let us look at another scenario, you're involved in an accident and the liability is N45k. The insurer is liable to pay N45k less policy excess which means you have to bear the total cost of repairs because it is less than the policy excess.

However, there are some insurance companies that allow excess buyback in there policy for a fee but most don't have this clause in their policies.
