PoliticsInteractive Oil & Gas Map Of Nigeria - Lgtnigeria.com by hexgear(op): 12:29pm On Dec 28, 2012
This interactive Oil & Gas map of Nigeria was developed in-house and shows all the oil block concessions and their current operators in the country.

The project represents a work in progress; the mission is to continuously update the map so that it reflects the most current and up to date information. In the long run this map will feature a lot more detailed information such as wells, fields and infrastructure and at that time will represent a more complete look at the Oil & Gas industry of Nigeria.

Using the Map
The application incorporates the Google Maps JavaScript API and can be viewed on most computers, tablets and smartphones except for BlackBerry smartphones which do not support Google Maps.

Follow the link below to view the full screen version of the map. You can zoom in and out using the zoom buttons on the top-left of the screen or the mouse wheel. If you zoom in enough the names of each oil block will be displayed on the screen. Click on the oil block you're interested in to reveal more info about the block such as the license type and current operator.

Programming| Call Of The Dragon | - Full Game by hexgear(op): 12:01am On Jul 23, 2009
Good day everyone,

My name is Samuel Boham and i'm a hobbyist game developer.

I would like to announce that we've uploaded the full game of Call of the Dragon on our website for free download.

Call of the Dragon is a project that has been in part-time development by myself and another game developer for over 3 years. On many occasions we reached a point where we felt that this game would never see the light of day, but through perseverance and a deep sense of love and devotion for what we do i'm happy to present this game to you here today.

Call of the Dragon is a straight-up brawler with some innovative twists and it should appeal to fans of Bruce Lee and the old-school beat 'em' up genre.

For more information on the game please visit the official website.

Scroll to the bottom of the page for the link to download the full game. Or if you would prefer to skip the info and get down to the brawling, click here.

The download is a 73.1MB zipped file. Simply extract the contents of the file into any directory and run the MNU.exe file to play the game. Refer to the manual.doc document for more information on how to play.

If you have any questions regarding the game or the development process behind it, feel free to ask by replying to this topic or sending me an email. I will be more than glad to help.

We hope you enjoy playing the game as much as we enjoyed making it!

Thanks & Best Regards,

Samuel Boham

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 2d/3d Art Gallery by hexgear(m): 12:09am On Feb 26, 2009
Firstly, i'd just like to say that i'm overwhelmed by the shear quality of the artwork on this thread. You guys should keep it up.

I just thought i'd make a small contribution, I worked on these designs a while ago when i first got my Wacom. I make games as a hobby and these character concepts are from a project of mine. There's an entire mythology behind the game that centres around good versus evil but the challenge was to come up with designs for characters that weren't your typical Angel and Demon.

The Æon
For this character i asked myself; "what if running heaven was like running a business?".  So i fitted the character with a suit, complete with tie and clip, keeping the outter colours light so he wouldn't be mistaken for a bad guy and got creative with the inner colours for that "standout" look. Maroon is a bold colour to wear with cream. In terms of time period, i was going for a 1930's industrial age gangster, hence the fancy shoes. Angels are warriors, and i admire the Japanese Samurai so i made the character asian and in an unorthodox move; fitted him with a full-arm gauntlet armour piece untop of his suit. Not everyone will agree with the logic behind this, but "Art doesn't ask for opinion", and you must agree, it makes for an insteresting design choice. Finally we have the wings, you can't forget the wings!

The Dæmon
This character isn't yet finnished, I was going for a pure bad-ass look, scary yet cool, inspired by Akuma from Street Fighter and Goku (SS4) from Dragon Ball Z. I wanted a bad guy you would like and respect. The Demon signs are there; the horns, sharp teeth, ugly animal-like appearance, fur etc. The character loves to fight so minimal clothing made sense (no shoes, torn trousers and rope for a belt) and i gave him that athletic "read-for-anything" build. The chest guard doubles as a holster for a very unqiue weapon (i felt your typical sword would be out of place). The colours had to be ugly, dark and gloomy; black (fur) and dark grey (skin) fit nicely but i made the hair light coloured because i loved the contrast. The glowing tattoos are more for style than anything else and the glowing red eyes were a last minute addition that i reckon fit pretty nicely.

TV/MoviesRe: What Anime Series Should I Watch Next? by hexgear(op): 1:36am On Oct 15, 2007
@echowords:

Hey man, thanks a lot for the suggestion on Basilisk. I looked it up on Wikipedia and I only needed to read the first couple of lines from the premise before I got intrigued; I mean Feudal Japan, Ninja's, The Shogun, Hattori Hanzo, what more do you need! Plus like you said it's only 24 episodes and not ongoing so it should be nice and simple to download, watch and wrap up.

Concerning One Piece; see I admire the Japanese Manga and Anime Authors and Producers for being able to take everyday, seemingly mundane activities and concepts like Boxing, Tennis, Racing, Samurai, School, etc (in this case Pirating) and tipping it on its head and flipping it 360 degrees, taking a fresh approach and breathing new life into it. I’ve never seen an Anime so funny yet so serious, although it’s centered on pirates it has everything from bad-ass Samurai’s to maniacal clowns, Capoeira using Chefs to Gods of thunder etc all in the mix. You just got to watch it to understand it but I bet you that you won't be disappointed.

P.S. There's a reason why it's number 9 on this list of the top 200 Anime. Whether it's you cup of tea or not I’ll leave to your own discretion. Thanks again.

Hey samir101ng, thanks a lot for the suggestions and summaries, they were really informative.

I want to round up all the "already-completed" Anime before I start on the "ongoing" ones so I guess I’ll start watching Hellsing first before i set off on the long road of catching up with Bleach and Naruto.

I haven't seen (or heard of) the DeathNote Anime before, although I recall watching a pretty cool trailer of the upcoming movie and it looked really interesting. If it's as good as you say it is then it should be worth watching, I’ll take your word for it and check it out.

Thanks again

I may be in Nigeria now but I’m not limited to the Nigerian game market alone (which would be dumb since it’s pretty much non-existent), the plan is to create the games and hook up with an online publisher to digitally distribute it for me via the internet. So in effect I have access to the global online game market, i.e. anyone with a good computer, a decent internet connection and the care to buy and download my games.
TV/MoviesWhat Anime Series Should I Watch Next? by hexgear(op): 11:40pm On Sep 20, 2007
Good day to all you Anime fans out there. I'm in a bit of a dilemma, but first some back story:

While at University in the UK a friend of mine introduced me to the wonderful world of Japanese Animation and the rest as they say is history. Before I returned to Nigeria he hooked me up with gigabytes worth of Anime (I’m talking over 200GB) because I knew that back home the slow internet access wouldn't favor my downloading new series.

Anyways, from my stash I’ve seen the following:

Trigun
Full Metal Alchemist
Ergo Proxy
Samurai Champloo
One Piece (ongoing)
Devil May Cry (ongoing)

All brilliant series, worthy of your time but now I’m trying to figure out which series to start watching next. Could you all please recommend a series from the list below? Could you please drop a short summary on what it's about and why you like it. Thanks.

Bleach
Blood+
Chrno Crusade
Cowboy Bebop
Elfen Lied
Escaflowne
GetBackers
Great Teacher Onizuka
Gun X Sword
GunGrave
Hajime No Ippo
Hellsing
Ichigo Mashimaro
Monster
Naruto
Rurouni Kenshin

P.S. If there’s a really cool Anime series out there that you think is worthy of recognition but doesn’t show up on my list above then could you drop that too, I’ll be sure to look into it. Thanks again.
GamingRe: What Game Are You Currently Playing? by hexgear(m): 10:26pm On Sep 20, 2007
Ever since I got into game-making I’ve been doing less and less of game-playing. The last game I played however was Gears of War on the Xbox 360 and the next game I hope to play is Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PS3.

@Gamine: Damn that profile pic is scary; it just popped up while I was listening to a particularly grim track and the combined effect made me skip a beat.
TV/MoviesRe: Heroes: TV Series by hexgear(m): 9:31pm On Sep 20, 2007
I think the series is great, really looking forward to the next season which starts a couple of days from now. I like the fact that it takes a well-known fictional subject like superheroes and tackles it from a fresher and more believable angle. However, my only problem is the overall pacing but still it's really cool how all the individual stories come together at the end. My favorite character has to be Hiro; he’s just so naïve, overly optimistic and generally really funny.
TV/MoviesRe: I Love 'thief' Films. How About You? by hexgear(m): 5:53pm On Sep 19, 2007
Yup, I love thief-films too, I especially like the scenes where they break everything down; explaining how they intend to make the steal. However some movies cannot really be categorized as thief-films but still have really cool thief-scenes in them like Mission Impossible 1 & 2, National Treasure, etc.

From the movies listed so far I think my favorites are:

Ocean's 11, it wasn't how they got in, it was how they got out.
Ocean's 12, the Capoeira dance of the Night Fox through the infra red beams was simply amazing.
Inside Man, dressing up the hostages like the bank robbers was pure genius.

Has anyone seen the TV series HU$TLE?
RomanceRe: Is This The Essence Of Love by hexgear(m): 5:07pm On Sep 14, 2007
They probably never quarreled a day before in their life and blew this one way out of proportion, but then again, damn, 7 years without quarrelling, I highly doubt that. You'd think after a whole 7 years their relationship would have matured enough to at least bring them to talk about any differences they may have, and the way both parties are vexing it's like none feels they were at fault and none wants to back down or own up.

A pity, however I’m intrigued to learn what really happened.

@iice: Your profile pic is priceless.

TV/MoviesRe: Nigerian's Own Cartoon Network by hexgear(m): 2:07pm On Sep 13, 2007
One thing about Nigerians is that a lot of people like to follow but only a few like to lead. Once someone creates a new lucrative market and the money starts flowing in then everyone will jump aboard the bandwagon,  but then again this is true for the rest of the world… but more so for Nigeria.

There are lots of artists and animators in Nigeria with a lot of skill and potential but no purpose or focus. If you’re serious about making cartoons and successfully launch one then I can guarantee you that in the near future a lot of animation studios will pop-up out of nowhere in Nigeria and you will eventually have your library of cartoons to possibly use in constructing a sort of "cartoon network".

The first step would be to make a cartoon series yourself. You would make a prototype or a single episode and try to pitch it to an existing TV station. If they like it then they would fund further development of the series and feature it on their TV channel, that's pretty much how you will get paid.

You don't necessarily have to be an animator to create a cartoon series, but it would be a plus because you would understand what it takes to create a cartoon and you will be able to relate with the other artists and animators on your team.

You'd have to show some initiative first by coming up with for example a concept, characters, storylines, drawing style, animation style, writing style, etc in effect an Art Bible and inserting all this into a kind of design document. This would prove to others that you're really serious about making something; you have actually done something rather than just talked and thought about it. Creating forums like this one or similar with art and animation as a focus would make a good portal for aspiring Nigeria artists to come together and share ideas, animation techniques, showcase their art or even get recruited for a job etc.

@grafikdon

That's actually pretty good for trial work, it felt like a first charge in a Zulu war film, well done. The only problem I have with the video in general are the weird clouds, they move too quickly and seem to abruptly change direction at one point. Anyways, you stated that your goal was to make a believable crowd simulation and not realistic clouds and in that you did just fine.
ComputersRe: Can The Resolution Of A Computer Affect It's Performance? by hexgear(m): 7:17pm On Sep 12, 2007
@uselo

The resolution of the computer can affect its performance but only slightly, probably to the point where you might not even notice the difference. With varying resolutions the computer spends more (or less) time rendering the GUI (graphical user interface, i.e. the folders, menus, icons and other things that you see on the screen). As you increase the resolution you effectively increase the number of pixels per square inch meaning the computer has to manage/process more pixels, more data and more memory just to display a better and sharper image on the screen. Think of it like taking a poor quality picture versus a high quality picture with the same digital camera, which one would take more time to do?

One way you can justify this is by observing the speed of the mouse while using different resolutions.

Hope that helps
ProgrammingRe: Game Developers Corner by hexgear(m): 6:46pm On Sep 12, 2007
If you want to go into game development fulltime (as in make enough money to sustain yourself and your family) then you have to play on the same level as the big boys, (i.e. Valve, Rare, Epic, Rockstar etc) which means a big and capable team, lots of capital, a great game and getting that game into at least the top 3 gaming markets; America, Europe and Asia via a multinational publisher. Nigeria on the other hand has a virtually non-existent market which has no hope of building up until more homes can afford decent computers.

On the other hand, if you want to make games as a hobby, or make a little something on the sideline as an Independent developer while you still keep your day job then there's hope through online distribution. Online distribution encompasses both online games and downloadable games, both are typically small in size and don't necessarily require powerful computers to create. All you have to do is create an addictive, fun and innovative game, hook up with a reliable online publisher/distributor and setup some kind of channel like pay pal to reap the returns. The good thing about this model is you have exclusive access to a much bigger market; all you have to do is get your game known.

The concept of a Nigerian game does sound intriguing, and I really like the sketches. I haven't used Ogre 3D before but I have looked into it and I hear some very positive things about it. I hope it's suitable enough to satisfy your needs, although it might take a while to come to grips with if you have no previous experience using it.

I've dabbled into game making quite a bit so I’d be glad to give any advice should you need it.

Bros, back in my secondary school days I would have taken you up on that challenge, and probably beat you, who knows,  but right now I’m pretty much rusted beyond rehabilitation. But those sure were the good old days, mastering the combos of KI; the only black cartridge on the SNES.

Who is your favorite player? And I guess the obvious next question is; what is your highest ultra?
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: I Need A Digital Pen & Pad by hexgear(m): 10:42pm On Sep 09, 2007
@Wham

Well, it all depends on what exactly you intend to use it for, but first and foremost I would suggest you pick one from the tried and tested Intuos3 line. The nice thing about this range is that they all have the same specs (resolution, accuracy, sensitivity, etc); the only major difference is the obvious active area size. So it all boils down to:

How do you like to draw? On a table, on your lap, generic sketches or fine detail work?

What's your policy on portability? Will you need to carry it around a lot or will it pretty much sit on your work desk permanently?

How much money are you willing to spend? More money will only get you a bigger size not better quality.

As for me, I did a little sketching as a kid (and still do), always using the standard A4 paper and thought that if I ever needed to trace my work unto the computer; the tablet would have to be at least A4 size. I also saved up for a while to cover the huge cost of getting a brand new one. Hopefully someday it will pay for itself.
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: I Need A Digital Pen & Pad by hexgear(m): 2:09am On Sep 09, 2007
@ Wham

Bros, it’s good to see you’re getting a WACOM in the long run. When it boils down to creating professional art no other graphics tablet can compare. I was once in your position and got myself a cheap Nisis at first but after sampling it for just a couple of minutes the poor quality was so evident. Luckily I was abroad at the time and had the chance to order a Wacom Intuos A4 Oversize and I haven't looked back ever since. The only downside is that it's freakin' huge man, if only I could have sampled-before-buying it I would have chosen the lower A4 model.

Metal Gear Solid, hands down.

I always admired the games even though I haven't played them in great detail. The series is pretty much one big interactive movie and the cut-scenes are already made to mimic Hollywood cinema. I hear Hideo Kojima; the designer of all the games is slated to direct (or at least produce) the feature film and there's a lot of speculation on which actor will fill the shoes of the main protagonist; Snake (actors like Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, Viggo Mortensen, and even the original Kurt Russell).

Well, in my opinion, so far Uwe Boll stays as far away as possible and Hideo is at the helm, it could turn out to be something spectacular.
