Jobs/Vacancies / Re: 2013 Job Search Outlook: Where The Jobs Will Be In 2013. by hienyimba(m): 3:06pm On Jan 04, 2013
To unearth the 10 most in-demand skills of 2013 we drilled into the critical skill-sets for the top jobs of 2013 as defined by CareerBuilder as the occupations with the most jobs added since 2010 using O*NET, the U.S. clearinghouse of occupational information. Not surprisingly, technical expertise and their various applications figure heavily on the list–but it’s the less flashy skills that really dominate.

“Knowing which skills are in high demand can help guide decisions around education and work experience,” says Brent Rasmussen, President of CareerBuilder North America. “It can help workers identify where they can potentially transfer their current skill sets or supplement their education to prepare for future opportunities.”

Highlighting skills on resumes may be critical, but it’s in the interview setting where a prospective hire can really let them shine. “I don’t know that many employers are sitting in an interview checking off boxes on ‘critical thinking’ or ‘active listening’ in candidates,” says Milgram. “But they absolutely are looking for thosequalities.” Through anecdotes or proven track-records Milgram and Rasmussen agree: It’s critical to show how you put those skills into action and contributed to the success of previous employers. Providing specific examples of how these skills spelled success can mean the difference between an offer letter or being shown the door.

Here, the 10 most critical job skills to parlay in your job search for 2013:
No. 1 Critical Thinking (found in 9 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

No. 2 Complex Problem Solving (found in 9 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

No. 3 Judgment and Decision-Making (found in 9 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate ones.

No. 4 Active Listening (found in 9 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting.

No. 5 Computers and Electronics (found in 8 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, electronic equipment and computer hardware including applications and programs.

No. 6 Mathematics (found in 6 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their application.

No. 7 Operations and Systems Analysis (found in 5 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Determining how a system or operation should work and how changes in conditions, operations and environments will affect outcomes. Understanding the needs and product requirements of a particular design.

No. 8 Monitoring (found in 5 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Monitoring and assessing performance of yourself, other individuals or organizations to make improvement or take corrective action.

No. 9 Programming (found in 3 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Writing computer programming for various purposes.
No. 10 Sales and Marketing (found in 2 out of the 10 most in-demand jobs)
Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting and selling products or services. Includes marketing strategy and tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques and sales control systems.

Business / Analogy: Why The Rich Keep Getting Richer... by hienyimba(m): 2:58pm On Jan 04, 2013
Well, it’s that time again—time to start rolling out the New Year’s resolutions. Some of us will vow to eat less, exercise more, live in the moment, be more grateful. You may even decide to bury the hatchet with the family member who makes you so crazy.

But what about your New Year’s business resolutions?
This time of year is a great time to start making—and keeping—business resolutions, too. But sadly, like our personal goals, we often make them (year after year) with sincere intent only to see them quickly fall by the wayside, as we revert to (bad) habits that we have vowed to break.
But what about the most successful people and their resolutions? Have you noticed how the most accomplished people just seem to identify important things and consistently get them done?
Study successful people long enough and you start to pick up on the resolutions they seem to consistently make.

Here are ten of my favorites:

#1 Spend more time on the not-to-do list
How the Most Successful People Motivate Themselves (And Stay Motivated)

Strategy is the art of sacrifice. That’s why you may consider creating a larger clearing for what really matters by first identifying, and then avoiding, what matters the least. Your time is a treasure to be invested. Creating a list of things that you are not going to do, allows you to invest more of your treasured time on the few things that matter the most.

#2 Essential first, email second
What’s the first thing you do in the morning? For many of us, it is looking at email. We wake up with a renewed mind and spirit, ready to take on the world, and then we immediately allow ourselves to bedistracted by an insignificant email. Instead, wake up, take on the most important task of the day, and then (and only then) hit the email.

#3 Resolve to think about “Who” instead of “What”
Do you work for a “What” business or for a “Who” business? Successful companies run the risk of focusing too much on their current products and distributors thus—the “What”—losing sight of the constant and dramatically changing needs of their customer base. (The “Who.”) Insurance, pharma, health care, higher education often listen too much to their agents, doctors and professors. The real innovation starts with the end consumer.

#4 Resolve to find your purpose
As my friend Simon Sinek will tell you: People don’t buy what you do,they buy why you do it. Starting a career, a company or any kind of journey that is based firmly on your purpose is foundational to success and happiness. If you don’t know your company’s purpose or even your own, finding one is the worthiest of resolutions.

#5 Resolve to support a cause
If you’re reading this, chances are you are one of the rare people who know how to start things. Fortunately, there are people like youwho have already started causes that make the world better—they feed the hungry; they save the rain forest; they fight cancer; they do good things. There is virtually a cause for everyone, and contributing will make your year happier. Promise.

#6 Resolve to invent more choices
Here’s a secret that happy people know that I learned from my friend Dr. Dan Baker: You can’t feel grateful and fearful at the same time. And one certain way to become afraid is to feel trapped by anysituation. The remedy is choice. The more choices you feel you have, the less trapped—and happier—you will feel. So this year, resolve to do a bit of brainstorming every time you feel unhappy.

#7 Resolve to find a Yin for your Yang
Walt Disney had Roy Disney, Steve Jobs had Steve Wozniak and Orville Wright had Wilbur Wright. Wherever there is great innovation, there is a Dreamer and an Operator; an Idea Monkey and a (Ring)leader. First, determine where your passions lie, then go find an equally passionate partner, then go change the world.

#8 Resolve to get outside your jar
You can’t read the label when you are sitting inside the jar. The sad irony of being an expert is that it keeps you from seeing possibility. After all, you know what works, what doesn’t, what you can afford, what’s been tried in the past. Instead of relying only on your expertise, learn how to find other experts solving similar challenges to the ones you are facing. Go ask them what you may be missing.

#9 Resolve to be the creator
What is the outcome you want? What stands in your way? How do you overcome these obstacles? These three simple questions will keep you from being victimized by any situation. Creators change the world. Victims just bitch about stuff.

#10 Plan vacations (now)
You have probably heard the saying, “Life is what happens when you are not paying attention.” Unfortunately for many of us, we let this become true. Do yourself a favor and plan your vacations for thenext year today. I promise you that the days around your vacation will fill in nicely. I also promise you that you’ll have something to look forward to and the life that happens during your vacations will be precious.

This is part of a series of posts where i connect with jobseekers and offer them valuable advice.

Another area where a lot of vacancies may be in 2013 is in the web space
Nigeria web tech companies are slowly becoming less of clones and really begining to have some first time tech (think Yolpe!).Internet start-ups is already recieving a lot of funding (think Jobberman,Konga,Jumia) and this will open up a whole new industry for hiring in 2013 and beyond. Also with the recent International recodnition of Nairaland and Jobberman, you can just bet.
I also guarantee that large companies who dont care about employees and company culture will loose its appeal.
Constuction will also be a lead with the lots of Nation Building going on all over Nigeria. So for the time being, jobseekers keep in touch while i do more research for you. If you have any other ideas, be free to express your ideas in your comments.

Jobs/Vacancies / 2013 Job Search Outlook: Where The Jobs Will Be In 2013. by hienyimba(m): 4:07pm On Jan 01, 2013
Where is the job growth going to be in 2013? What areas should you focus on? And what job sectors are poised for growth?
2012 has been a challenging year for many who have been displaced from their job and are trying to get back into the job market. Many remain “underemployed”while attempting to get a job in their given industry. The unemployment number continues to fall, and companies are hiring, yet the competition for jobs remains fierce.
2013 is the year for change. It is time for you to go to where the jobs are rather than waiting to find something that was the same as what you were doing before you lost your job. It is time for you to reassess your skills and to focus on what value you can bring to a company. It is also the time for you to consider growth industries as a new career.

Here are some areas I see as poised to growth in 2013:

*. Online Marketing Research -This industry is “hot” now as the need for qualitative data on consumer behavior in spending is becoming essential as social media and online conversations offer vital information for companies. Jobs as an Analyst, Client Relations Manager and Sales Executive are most needed in this space and people with brand management, marketing and social media experience should look into companies that provide online marketing research.

*. Construction Management- The construction sector was one of the hardest hit sectors in the Great Recession. Residential sales are beginning to pick up, especially in the west and east coast, as foreclosures and short sales have been absorbed into the marketplace. Construction companies are gearing up to rebuild their portfolio. Project Managers are needed as are Property Managers for new acquisitions and building starts.

*. Home Healthcare Workers - This area continues to be in demand as many infirmed and elderly choose or are focused to, due to the high cost of Assisted Living, to stay in their homes. Nurses and Nurses Aides are needed to administer medication and tend to the needs of this growing population.

*. Production Work- With the advent of the Reality show popularity more and more people are trying to become the next star on TV. There is a growing need for camera people and production workers to film sizzle reels for these individuals. If you have a video camera and the editing tool access, you can get much work from people who need your skills.

*. Mobile Technology- This is the new internet for buying. The applications for mobile purchasing are increasing at a feverish rate as more and more companies are adopting mobile technology. Many jobs are being created in this space to handle the demand for mobile retail buying. Sales, marketing, and consulting management are in demand positions in this space. Also, with the advent of mobile money in the country, you can just keep guessing.

*. Home Concierge Services- The people that have jobs are overloaded and extremely busy. They need help in managing their household. Dog walking and sitting, maid services, maintenance and home repair personnel continue to be needed for those too busy to deal with these chores.
Make 2013 your year for change by doing things differently . Look at your career as a new start to delve into areas you never considered. One constant we can all count on going forward is change . Success lies in your ability to adapt to change and make it work for you. Also, i would advise you to be on Yolpe.com and do things differently this new year.

May your 2013 be filled with passion and purpose as you enter a new journey in your life!

iwe oru: A bit of advice from my experience as a person studying to be an engineer who finally got an engineering related job:

1. Stay positive. This can be difficult especially when you constantly receive rejection. if you can maintain a positive attitude you will keep trying.
2. Look anywhere and everywhere. That means if you have to look overseas then do so. Leave no stone unturned and if necessary take your talents elsewhere.
3. Keep abreast of the industry you want to apply to. This will help the relevant knowledge of your profession stay fresh in your mind.
4. While you are looking for your dream job, take whatever temporary job you can find to help finance your future. It may not use the knowledge you learned in school but it will give you work experience and some money to build on.

nice one

Good day to the employers in the house if any. Recruiting can be tough, it can be painful, it can be heart rendering so i would love you all to share your stories - or job-seekers who were funny, annoying, who scaled through, who were disqualified, what they did to deserve it ,anything.happy writing..

...Mine...

last December..
After a double page Job advertisement(on maybe Tuesday Guardian Newspapers) which cost you roughly 1.2million Naira, you open your emails the next day and scream OMG!!!
Inbox: 5000(unread)
Spam :12,000(new
)

And the funny thing is that you know all of them are Resumes from Jobseekers or just about anyone and almost everyone who thinks they are genuinely entitled to what your company has to offer but are/may not be suitably qualified..

Now:

You dont know what to do.Even the ad cost you 600k( outrageous for only a job ad. not even your company's product advert sef"wink. And now, these numerous resumes. And the worst thing is that you know you have to download them all, scan for viruses and worst still read/view them all.
Your OMG just got bigger....

Welcome to Company Recruitment
.......that just got easier.
Welcome to

Despite what we’re reading on myriad blogs this week, New Year’s resolutions aren’t bad – especially for job seekers , recent graduates and college students dealing with our new economic reality.

The trouble with resolutions isn’t the resolutions, but lack of preparedness required to make them a reality. Until we know what we’re doing wrong – and what needs to change to get it right – resolutions are just “happy talk”. The turn of a calendar page doesnothing to change that.

Losing weight for instance, requires far more effort than saying “I’m going to eat less.” To accomplish our goal, we need a plan, a benchmark, an effective support group – and most important – we have to understand why we’re failing in the first place!
Same concept applies to our job search and early-stage career development. We must look at what we have been doing wrong – before we can change enough to succeed.

With that in mind, here are the 5 R’s for conquering career obstacles in 2013:

1. Refresh
This is the best part of the New Year’s resolution process – and the easiest to adapt. What a new calendar DOES do well: it allows afresh start. We feel enabled. You’re ready to leave your baggage behind…
For about 3 days.
Then… everything goes back to the way it was on December 13, and August 27 – and back toJanuary 4 of 2012 when this same process occurred – and our motivation ended.
A sincere refresh – is an attitude. A passion. An “I’m not letting anything get in the way!” revelation independent of the day of the week, the mood we’re in or external issues that standbetween us and our goals.
January 1 gives us this opportunity to refresh –with no strings attached. Ultimately, however, it’s up to us to maintain that attitude until we’ve accomplished something real.

2. Realize
Reality is a far more difficult process. Objectively viewing our situation requires us totake a good hard look at what we’ve done so far – and determine what has (and has not) helped us accomplish our goals. After all, thereare people out there – perhaps less qualified –getting job offers and moving their career development forward. Why aren’t we?
To help move this realization process along, answer these questions:
*. If my career collateral (resume and cover letter) is perfect – why am I not getting interviews ?
*. When I do get interviews, why am I not a Top 3 candidate… why do I so rarely get a call-back?
*. If my online presence is so amazing, why have no influencers noticed?
*. If I am so good at networking, why am I receiving so few introductions from those in my sphere of influence?
For most of us… once we answer these questions… we have our benchmark. This is where we start.
This is our reality.

3. Reinvent
Now we start moving forward… past the happytalk and sometimes harsh realities – into action.
Why? Because for most of us, here are the answers to questions asked above:
*. Compared to our competition, our resumes are not good enough
*. It is highly likely we are not skilled at interviewing – yet
*. If no one has noticed us online – we haven’t done enough to make ourselves noticeable, and;
*. If we aren’t receiving introductions from our networks… we aren’t yet engaging
Time to reinvent! Get professional resume help(yes, help is affordable – or, Google “free resume help”). Work with someone to greatly improve your interview skills (if you don’t knowsomeone – join a career-related Twitter chat tofind a mentor and schedule informational interviews). Commit to both social and face-to-face networking two hours each day (anything less could be considered a waste of your time). Finally, commit to engaging: stop merely “liking”, “following” and “+1ing” – and actually TALK to people.
That’s the differentiator that gets you noticed!
You’ll reinvent because you are NOT yet as good as you think – or at least as good as yourjob seeking competition. Adjust your approach – and watch good things happen!

4. Reciprocate
Ah… the simplest ‘R’ of them all: reciprocation. When we as job seekers and young careerists begin to present first-class career collateral, show progress with our interview skills and network effectively with passion – it’s amazing how many people are willing to help!
Now, return the favor. Help others around you.Share what you’ve learned. Follow the advice stated by many others: “give more than you take”.
When you hit this point in your resolution process… you know you’re really doing something right.

5. Results
We hear this all the time: “I’ve applied for 200 jobs online and haven’t gotten a single response!” Our reply, as you can imagine, usually invokes the definition of insanity often attributed to Einstein and Twain (“doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results”). At the very least, we say: “Don’t tell us about the work you’ve done… tell us what you’ve done that works.”

So we’ve saved the best ‘R’ – results – for last. Why? Because no matter what your goals may be, working hard and getting nowhere is the biggest single obstacle we’ll stare down.
Our advice: focus on those items that generatereal results. What exactly did you do to improve your resume? What did you learn from the interview that did result in a call-back? What process did you follow to builda relationship online? What did you do to “win”today that you can do again tomorrow?

Define your desired results by setting tangible goals (i.e. a new resume completed by January15; 10 new high-quality contacts via social media a week; 2 interviews per month, etc.). Build a support network to help you achieve them. Execute. And always focus on results.

For 2013, don’t scream out resolutions like “I’m going to lose weight”, “I’ll finally quit smoking”and “I’m going to find a job!” Far too often, the outcome of such happy talk is failure.
To institute real change, we have to be ready – mentally ready. Utilize these 5 ‘R’s – and make 2013 an amazing year for your career & also if i may add, visit Yolpe.com Today – Originally posted on YouTern by Mark Babbitt

Jobs/Vacancies / Eight Ways To Prepare For A Job Search In The New Year. by hienyimba(m): 11:16pm On Dec 27, 2012
1, Create a vision.
What are you looking for in a job? Take some time to do what I call your
Inner Job Search , until you have a vision of what you want in your
next job. You can make lists, draw pictures or cut photos from
magazines, but think big and make it feel as real as you can.

2, Make a plan.
The best job searches are systematic and focused. Create a plan for
yourself. How much time will you spend on your job search? What websites
will you use? Set some targets and goals for activities and make lists
of people youwant to network with and companies you wantto talk to.
Writing it down will make you feel more control.

3. Update your resume.
Notice this isn't the first thing to do? That's because you need to know
what you want and have a plan before you can create a resume that opens
the doors you want. If you're in thebusiness world, it's probably worth
looking intogetting some professional help, too, which will save you
time and get you a better job faster in the long run.

4. Create a Yolpe profile.
Yolpe is a critical place for you to have a strong presence. imagine
being a job seeker and being lazy about your job search.thats what this
new site Yolpe wants you to do-be lazy.by simply completing a cv profile
page you let recruiters and employers find you with just a click of
their mouse.Set to launch in 2013, i wld recommend you be among the
first there are recruiters are going to be flocking.

5. Set up a filing system.
You'll need a central place to manage a job search, and some kind of
system for saving and filing job postings, and for tracking your
applications. It doesn't matter if it's paper and manila folders or all
on your iPhone, as long asit's easy for you to manage.

6. Do some casual job window shopping.
Give yourself a couple of weeks to just look at all kinds of job
listings on job sites and company sites. Start a file of bookmarks of
jobsthat sound kind of interesting, but don't do anything more than
that. You're just warming up first.

7. Make a resume business card.
A personal card that includes some brief highlights of what you do or
what you're looking for, with your contact information and your photo,
is a great way to cement who you are and what you do in the minds of
people you meet.

8. Reconnect with your references.
People give better references when they're prepared for the call, and
they'll feel better about vouching for you if you reach out to them
before you need them. Now's a great time to send a message on Facebook
or send a holiday card to the people you'll use as references to touch
base and let them know your new year may bring a new job search, too.

There's a lot more to prepare for a job search, but these are easy
things that you can take care of during the down time of the holidays,
so you're primed and ready to find a job fast when you hit the ground
running come January.
And may i add; visit Yolpe.com now to join the revolution
