Politics / Sheriff: Fayose’s Conduct Shameful by HighestPriest: 10:00am On Jun 24, 2016
PDP National Chairman, Ali Modu-Sheriff
Embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “National Chairman” Ali Modu Sheriff has described the public conduct of Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose as shameful.

Sheriff was reacting to Fayose’s comment that he was removed as chairman because he was scheming for the 2019 presidential ticket of the PDP and was also baiting some party chieftains with the vice presidential ticket.

At a media briefing in Abuja yesterday, Sheriff said: “I am ashamed at the way and manner Fayose is conducting himself in the country. I was once a governor; so, I know that the position of governor is a very serious one that demands responsible behaviour”.

He denied scheming for the party’s presidential ticket, saying: “I never told anybody I wanted to run for president and I did not promise anybody the vice presidential ticket. I have decided not to join issues with Fayose.”

To buttress his claim to the chairmanship of the party, Sheriff said the National Working Committee (NWC) under him is in charge of the bank accounts of the PDP, not the Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee.

“Myself and the Treasurer who is also a member of the NWC are signatories to the bank accounts of the PDP. Makarfi may also open another account in the name of his caretaker committee if he wished,” Sheriff said.

The former Borno State governor said he had forgiven Makarfi and his committee members for what he called their failed attempt to take over the party and invited them to rejoin the PDP under his leadership.

Said he: “There is only one PDP, which is the one under my leadership. Anyone who thinks that the Makarfi, contraption can work is deceiving himself. I am the only chairman of the PDP recognised by the courts, the constitution and the Electoral Act.

“I became chairman because the PDP chose me to lead the party. So, I won’t sit by and watch some people mess up the party. I am here to correct what had gone wrong with state congresses conducted by the party.”

Sheriff inaugurated a committee to conduct a primary to pick a candidate for the party in the upcoming Edo governorship election. The PDP has hold a primary which Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu won.

Sheriff named Senator Hope Uzodinma as chairman of the committee and a former presidential aide, Ahmed Gulak, as secretary.

According to him, three aspirants have obtained nomination forms at N10 million each. The money had been deposited in the party’s bank account.

Sheriff announced that he would soon convene the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to ratify the candidature of the winner of the Edo primary election to be conducted by the Uzodinma committee.

“After that, we will forward the name of our governorship candidate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the July 10 deadline set by the commission for the submission of candidates,” he said.

He declared as “null and void” the primary election conducted by the Makarfi committee, and which produced Pastor Ize-Iyamu as the governorship candidate of the party for Edo State.”

Sheriff dismissed as false, claims by the Makarfi committee that INEC monitored the primary election it conducted, saying the commission had debunked the claim.

With Sheriff were Uzodinma, Gulak, Senator Buruji Kashamu and Mrs. Mariam Ali.

Others are former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim; former PDP Vice Chairman (Southsouth) Dr. Cairo Ojougboh; PDP Southwest Zonal Chairman Makanjuola Ogundipe; a former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Kasim Gbolarunmi; Senator Saidu Kumo; Mrs. Esther Audu.

Also at the event were Prof. Wale Oladipo and Fatai Adeyanju, who are still laying claim to National Secretary and National Auditor.
Education / 4-unilag-students-arraigned-over-vikings-membership by HighestPriest: 3:38pm On Jun 23, 2016
FOUR students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) were, on Monday, arrested and charged to court for belonging to a cult group.

According to the police, the students allegedly formed and managed the group on campus.

The suspects were identified as Afaku Daniel, 22; Ekube Okereke, 20; Chinonzo Duru, 23 and Ogechukwu Ebere, 22.

They allegedly formed a cult group named Vikings Confraternity.

The students, however, pleaded not quilty when they were arraigned before an Ikeja magistrates’ court.

Their counsel, Yinka Oyekunle, pleaded with the court to grant them bail in most liberal terms.

After listening to their plea, the presiding magistrate, Aje Afunwa, granted them N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum, who must either be a parent or guardian.

The case was adjourned till September 23.
Politics / Court To Rule On Fg’s Application To Protect Witnesses In Dasuki Trial by HighestPriest: 2:38pm On Jun 23, 2016
A Federal High Court, Abuja, has fixed Sept. 13 for ruling in Federal Government’s application to protect its witnesses during the trial of former National Security Adviser (NSA), retired Col. Sambo Dasuki.

Dasuki is facing trial for alleged possession of illegal firearms and money laundering, which he had pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Oladipo Okpeseyi (SAN), in his application urged the court to grant an order to protect the identities of the prosecution witnesses.
[a]
Okpeseyi also asked the court to direct that the identities of Federal Government witnesses should not be disclosed in any records or reports that were accessible to the public.

He contended that most of the witnesses were security personnel who were involved in other operations across Nigeria.

The prosecutor also submitted that exposing the identity of the prosecution witnesses could make them easy targets of highly possible attacks from those sympathetic to the former NSA.

“These are people who are allegedly in possession of some highly sophisticated arms and ammunition allegedly imported by the defendant,’’ Okpeseyi said.

He said that the defendant, while he was serving as NSA to former President Goodluck Jonathan, imported a large cache of highly sophisticated arms and ammunition.

Okpeseyi also claimed that most of arms and ammunition had not been accounted for.

He also said that some of the witnesses, whose tour of duty involved carrying out covert operations for the security of the country, would have their cover blown if made to testify without protection.

He emphasised that such exposure could endanger public security of the country.

While opposing the motion, Mr Joseph Daudu (SAN), counsel to Dasuki, urged the court to dismiss the application for being an abuse of court process.

Daudu argued that the court had earlier dismissed the same motion made by the prosecution on May 3, 2016.

He said that for the prosecution to represent the same application would mean that the prosecution was abusing the process of law.

He said rather than approach the Court of Appeal, the prosecution decided to file the same application.

Daudu, therefore, urged the court to dismiss the application for lacking in merit and an abuse of court process.

After listening to the submissions of both parties in the case, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, adjourned ruling in the motion till Sept. 13.

Politics / Presidency Speaks On Governor Fayose’s Claim On Aisha Buhari by HighestPriest: 5:32pm On Jun 21, 2016
The Presidency has dismissed as laughable the desperate attempt by Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State to link President Buhari’s wife, Aisha, to US Congressman William Jefferson’s bribery scandal for which the American lawmaker was convicted in 2009.
Reacting to Mr. Fayose’s allegations in a press statement, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said ordinarily the presidency would have ignored Fayose because he was a man “childishly obsessed with the desire to grab the headlines and insulting people at will because of his incurably boorish instincts.”
Mr. Garba explained however that the presidency chose to respond on this occasion for the sake of innocent Nigerians who might be misled by Mr. Fayose’s shameless and blatant distortion of facts.
He said ignoring Mr. Fayose carried the risk of giving traction and credibility to outright and brazen falsehoods inconsistent with the status of anybody that calls himself a Governor or leader.
According to Mr. Shehu, Aisha had no direct, indirect or the remotest connection with William Jefferson’s corruption scandal in the United States.
He challenged Mr. Fayose to tell Nigerians if the so-called Aisha whose pictures he proudly, but ignorantly shared, was the same Aisha married to President Muhammadu Buhari, or if the Aisha of his idle imagination had any relationship by blood or any relationship in whatever form with President Buhari’s wife.
Mr. Shehu also challenged Mr. Fayose to produce evidence from the records of investigation and subsequent trial of Jefferson to prove that Mr. Buhari’s wife Aisha was in anyway linked to that scandal. He explained that common names alone were not enough to automatically link innocent people to crimes or scandals, especially in an era of identity thieves.
He further challenged Mr. Fayose to show proof when and where Aisha Buhari was invited for interrogation in connection with Congressman William Jefferson’s bribery scandal, let alone indicted for a crime locally or abroad.

According to the presidential media aide, free speech does not entitle Governor Fayose to falsely accuse innocent people of crimes they knew nothing about.
He warned Fayose that Aisha Buhari was entitled to protect her reputation from being recklessly maligned, adding that political opposition was not a licence to attack people’s reputation brazenly without legal consequences.
Politics / Sex Scandal: Accused Lawmakers Deny Allegation, Insist On Proof by HighestPriest: 4:03pm On Jun 21, 2016
The House of Representatives on Tuesday, mandated its committees on Ethics and Privileges and Foreign Affairs to investigate alleged sexual misconduct against three of its members.

This followed a motion brought under Order six, Rules two and 22 of the House Standing Orders by one of the accused, Rep. Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue).

In the motion, Gbillah described the action of the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James Entwhistle, in petitioning the house, as a move to tarnish the image of the lawmakers and the hallowed chamber.

He said that no such incident occurred as reported by the ambassador, and insisted that the envoy should provide proof to support his allegation.
Gbillah, who was accused with Samuel Ikon (PDP, Akwa Ibom) and Mohammed Gololo (APC, Bauchi) of the crime, said that none of them was interrogated by U.S. authorities over the allegation.

He said that there was, therefore, the need not to draw conclusion on the matter until it had been properly investigated.

The motion was unanimously adopted through a voice vote.

However, Rep. Nnena Elendu-Ukeje, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, cautioned that the matter should be taken with utmost seriousness so as not to jeopardise Nigeria-U.S. relationship.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the house, Mr Yakubu Dogara, urged Nigerians to tread with caution on the matter until the persons involved were proven guilty.

He therefore referred the matter to the relevant committees “to be handled in line with international best practice’’.

Politics / Drama In Bank As EFCC Freezes Fayose’s Account by HighestPriest: 3:40pm On Jun 21, 2016
Governor protests

‘Immunity can’t stop investigation’

When a big customer physically visits a bank – in these days of online banking – something must be amiss.

Other customers will make way for him and the staff will be on their toes.

That was the scene yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, when Governor Ayo Fayose defied the rain to visit a bank where he demanded his statement of account.

Told that his account had been temporarily frozen, His Excellency was enraged. He protested and vowed to stay put in the banking hall until the matter was resolved. He was still there at 6pm.

The bankers stood their ground – that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) ordered that the account be frozen.

Fayose was huffing and puffing, screaming that he had immunity and would contest the freeze. The bankers remained unmoved.

The embattled governor, who spoke with reporters at the premises of the bank located on Secretariat Road, said the action was one of the moves against him by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

Fayose said: “I found out that the EFCC blocked my account and the accounts of some of my associates. I see this as illegal. If you want to fight corruption, fight corruption based on rule of law.

“I’m a sitting governor and under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution I enjoy immunity.

“You must do anything you want to do within the ambit of law. This government has no respect for constitutional provisions. They should not be in a hurry; in 2018, I will be done. I will come to them myself. I have become a figure in this country that I have nowhere to go.

“This rascality of EFCC must stop. Did they not contest election? Where did they get the funds from? Is it because they are the sitting government?

“We will take every legal step to get things right; they can’t continue with this rascality. I’m not leaving this bank until they have given me a statement confirming that because on their system they said my account is restricted by the EFCC. They must put it into writing because EFCC under the law has no power to touch my property.

“It is not new. I fight everyday and God grants me victory everyday. They want to destabilise this state, they want to take the state at all cost and it is not going to be possible. I’m on ground. I’m not going to shy away for life, death or incarceration. They will not coerce me and take away my right,” he said.

Fayose’s personal account was frozen following clues on alleged “suspicious lodgments”, a top official of the anti-graft agency said last night.

The agency said the action was part of an ongoing investigation, adding that governors have no immunity against investigation.

Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution only confers immunity on governors and some public officers against prosecution, the official added.

Although there were allegations that the frozen cash was about N1.3billion, the EFCC said it might released the figure today as part of its findings.

EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren told The Nation last night that Fayose cannot stop the anti-graft commission from doing its job.

Uwujaren said: “It is true that we have frozen Governor Fayose’s acount in connection with an ongoing investigation. We will soon release the details of our findings to the public.

“We froze the account because Fayose has no immunity against investigation.

“Let me clarify that the 1999 Constitution does not grant immunity to governors or public officers against investigation.

“The governors and others enjoying the immunity clause in Section 308 cannot be prosecuted. Therefore, Fayose cannot stop EFCC from doing its job.”

Asked if the amount in the Post No Bill ( PNB ) account was up to N1.3billion as being speculated, Uwujaren said: “Certainly, some amount was frozen in Fayose’s account but I cannot say the exact amount till tomorrow (today).”

A top official, who spoke in confidence, said: “It became necessary to freeze the account following clues on alleged suspicious lodgments.

“We will release the facts soon to Nigerians to appreciate the extent of our investigation.”

Fayose accused the EFCC of intimidating him and vowed not to succumb.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary Idowu Adelusi and a broadcast relayed on the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES) yesterday announced the freezing of the governor’s account.

The governor, who accused the President Muhammadu Buhari administration of running a “selective anti-corruption crusade”, alleged that the accounts of his political associates and followers were also frozen by the EFCC. But he did not give their names and details.

He also claimed that he was not informed that he had committed any offence before his account was frozen.

The governor accused some leaders of the APC and a prominent lawyer from the state of being behind the action.
